Darn. How Dissappointing. The food is unfortunately highly inconsistant, as if the cooks one night differ significantly in skill or commitment from the next. On top of this, it is...

Love This Place! 9/11/2008

Great place for dinner with out of town guests you want to impress. Food was spot on and great wine list. Had a great waiter who made our night. Love waiters who know what they are doing and not intrusive! We'll be back. Although not inexpensive, prices are pretty reasonable for what you are getting. \r \r \r more

FIRST THURSDAY WOW! 9/11/2008

What a parade! I have never seen so many people ""going for it"" in one place. I knew The Pearl District was the place for all the fancy, pretty people, but this has got to be the epic center of it all. It was beyond crowded, but I was told First Thursday is always crowded. The food and drinks were good and surprisingly timely given the number of people they were serving. I recommend trying this place out. Pure fun and people watching! more

Fruit Flys in my Cognac 9/10/2008

Seeing a host of fruit flys in the bottome of my cognac, )Hennessy VSOP I walked to the bar to complain and his reply was ""oh, fruit-flys, that's a common bar problem."" To his credit he did offer me and my companions a free drink but that wasn't enough to overcome what was a poor dining experience at Blue Hour.\r First, when I ordered a glass of the Pinot, the waitress made sure to tell me that it was $20 per glass. I said I know, it was printed on the menu and I was wondering if I looked as if I couldn't afford the $20 or what. We ordered the Salmon Tartar for appetizer but it never came. The waitress had forgot it. She offered to take it off the bill and we had it after our main course, which was just as well because it was fresh and delicious and made up for a lackluster entree. (I had the gnocchi)\r All in all a disappointing experience. The restaurant trys so hard to be swank and thee place see and be seen. That might be o.k. if you're into that. But it's too bad the service and the food can't live up to the reputation as being one of Portland's best places to dine. more

wonderful evening 8/11/2008

my wife and i were recently in portland from san francisco, we were treated to a wonderful dinner at bluehour by our friends who live in portland. the experience was amazing, the food, the service and the atmosphere were all excellent. my wife loved the oysters and her striped bass. i would have to say it was one of our best dinning experiences. we will definitely return when we visit portland again. more

Love It! 8/5/2008

I live in the neighborhood and work next door. I'm there almost everyday. I've grown to think of Bluehour as my living room. My glamourous and delicious living room with an endless supply of great people watching. more

Nice but overrated 7/21/2008

See and be seen at Blue Hour. The wait staff is snooty and service is mediocre at best. The food is good and imaginative but you can get the same thing at a number of restaurants around town. During the busy evening dinner hour the restaurant is loud and almost impossible to carry on a quiet intimate conversation with your guests. Good but certainly not the best in Portland. Pros: The place to see and be seen in Portland Cons: Wait staff and parking more

This is the place to be. 5/28/2008

On a recent and rare sunny afternoon in Portland, I found myself lucky enough to snag a seat on the Bluehour patio. I have to say, this is the best place to be for delicious cocktails and cheap eats during happy hour in the city. Sitting there, watching the world go by, wonderful! more

Divine Dinner 5/23/2008

We had a lovely meal with friends visiting from New York who are extreme foodies and we always get nervous to hang out with them in a restaurant. We figured we should bring them to what we think is the best restaurant in Portland. We were right. Bluehour did not disappoint. Dinner was wonderful and service was just right. Our NYC friends cleaned their plates and we sent them home with stories to share of a great time and great place to dine in Portland. We will be back for dinner soon. more

A touch of greed... 5/16/2008

A recent dinner for an annual girls night out became unpleasant as we (and several other diners) were pressured out of the restaurant. The restuarant booked late reservations (probably to keep full as late as possible), despite a late night charity dinner later that evening. We were not told this even though we made our reservation for 8:30pm. As the evening progressed, it was apparent that something was going a - a sound check and feather centerpieces?!? Our server tried to be accomodating, but the management kept hovering about and looking at our plates to see if we were almost done. At first it was a slight annoyance, but it became tense and nerve wracking. We had to ask to talk to the manager, and his totally insincere and weak attempt to make things ""right"" didn't work. He was obviously more concerned about the charity patrons who were arriving. We don't plan on going back, despite the good food. Good service for ALL should be the priority - not just $$$$. more

Happiest place on earth! 4/2/2008

Bluehour is the best place in Portland! Hands down. Service, food, atmosphere and location are all in Bluehour's favor. I dine here regularly. Sometimes for a deal at happy hour, but most of the time for dinners with friends and first dates. This place always impresses me! more

Not so impressed... 3/20/2008

My boyfriend and I were not impressed with Bluehour the night we went there for dinner. The place was WAY too crowded and the table they sat us in was so small and right in the middle of the room. Unfortunately we were not able to have a conversation that evening because it was so hard to hear. We were practically screaming at each other. Our waiter was rude and non-existent. The food was decent enough, but I would like to enjoy everything. The decor is pretty to look at, but does that really make a great restaurant? If I am going to go out for a nice dinner, I would rather go somewhere where you can actually hear the people you are dining with, and the waitstaff is more attentive. I just can't see what all the hype is about. more

Burger! Porch! Spring has sprung. 3/16/2008

One of my favorite places in Portland, not because it is the homecoming queen of pdx restaurants but because their happy hour is KILLER! There can be nothing better than sitting on the deck watching the world go by with a pile of crispy fries and a burger, nothing can wash the work day away better than a perfect cocktail or a glass of rose. It is the best deal in town - especially since the quality is so ridiculously high. Even though I am just a regular gal - I always feel special here. Pros: Happy Hour, Specialty Drinks, Burger!, Oysters, Champagne Cons: Can get crowded... more

Spot on 2/27/2008

Decided bluehour would be a classy place to take my girlfriend and her mother for brunch. Was most definitely not disappointed. Service was perfect, everyone felt pampered without the server being overbearing (big pet peeve) and the food was delicious. Waffles were light and fluffy, my steak and eggs were delightful. My girlfriend's mother had a good time and I was able to make a great impression on her. Thanks bluehour! Pros: Service, Food Cons: Parking more

Needs to shine its stars 2/20/2008

Rencently dined on a Monday night. Host argued reservation was not in his book. Please take it up with your phone operator on Friday afternoons, not us. 8:15 pm and no other tables occupied and no one at the bar or in the lounge area. The service was professional and seamless. Although the food was a different story. Four small pieces of room temperature duck.on bland polenta and 3 carrots and a parsnip does not consistute at $28 price tag. If you want to charge these prices in PDX, please do, but value and attention to detail must be a consideration. The gnocchi were beautiful pillows, but void of black truffles and once again a bland and room temperature sauce. The wine list was also prices a bit too high. Pros: Ambiance, Service, Location Cons: Food...What happened???? more

Great food & service 1/13/2008

I've been to Blue Hour's happy hour for drink & dessert on several occasions, but never to dinner. I decided to have my 25th birthday dinner there. Though, we came in a large group the staff remained very cheerful and most attentive to our needs for the evening. The food was very tasteful. My guests and I had a grand time. I want to thank the staff of Blue Hour for making my birthday experience at their restuarant a wonderful one! more

Very good drinks/food and fantastic service 12/21/2007

We were running late and wanted to stop in for quick drinks and a quick bite (we're talking only a half hour) and asked our server if it could be done. He said it could, no problem, and told us what few things not to order (because they take longer to make). We ordered quickly and our drinks and small (bar) bites were put on our table with AMAZING SPEED. (luckily it was a Tuesday night) Our server was so helpful and kind, as were the other staff members. And the drinks were very very good as well as my cheese plate. Yum. Will definately be back. And plan to have no commitments afterward! Well worth the price. Pros: service, drinks, cheese! more

40 minutes for our entrees, Bad Table, Mediocre Service 12/11/2007

Let me preface...I am an executive chef, been in the business a long time. I know food, I know fine dining service. This was not it. . I went to Bluehour as a surprise birthday from my girlfriend. It started bad and got worse. The hostess stumbled as to where to put us. We were seated at a two top in the center of the room. Not the most romantic. But my girlfriend was trying to impress me, so I didn't say anything. After 15 minutes waiting for our server to take our order and bring our wine, I started to get annoyed. I noticed the food runner didn't know where orders were going. Big no-no. The app of risotto we shared was so plain it was ridiculous. The hip, cool Bluehour I'd heard so much about was failing. Then the 30 minute wait (after our app plates were removed) started. The server finally came by saying how the kitchen had gotten backed up. I told him as my first time here AND my birthday...I was annoyed. Never mind that we had arrived early and put our order in before 2/3 of the restaurant had arrived. My guess is the server fired our entrees late and all the newcomers orders were put in. After I voiced concern, he came back in literally 10 seconds saying ""Disaster averted, your entrees will be right out."" 10 minutes later, yes, our entrees did come out. Mine, the cod with lentils was good. Though 1 of the 3 random pieces of fish on my plate was odd tasting. And I know what fresh fish should taste like. My girlfriends steak was a temperature over what it was ordered and the parmesan flan tasted as though the parmesan was left out and then overcooked by half an hour. Oh, to make up for our wait, the server brought me another glass of wine on the house. No manager, no trying to make it better, his response, ""I figured I'd get you tipsy to make you feel better."" Are you kidding me?! Dessert was disappointing as well. I understand I'm a tough critic, but this place was ridiculous. I would never come back as a paying customer. And I'm mad I had to pay for that. Pros: By the glass wines, 4 glasses (equivalant to 1 bottle) cheaper than any bottle on menu Cons: Service, Management attention to detail, Food Presentation, Can't seem to handle a full dining room more

Always Right On! 11/27/2007

So we've been for brunch twice during the last three weekends. Each experience was a treat. The service from our waiter, Aric, was outstanding, friendly and polite. He is in the right place at the right time. The food is and always has been great. From the tea cakes, to the bloody marys and then the Pastrami Hash...everyone always wants another bite. The individual french press's are a nice touch. I do wish they were insulated so that the coffee would stay hot. All in all, it has been a treat to take two groups of friends to one of Portland's best places for brunch. And, if you're wondering, the lunch at the bar during the week has also been consistently amazing. Thank you to the entire staff for such memorable meals. Cheers! Pros: Service, quality of ingredients more

amazing atmosphere and eye candy 11/8/2007

I took my boyfriend in for dessert and drinks a blue hour last week and haven't been able to stop thinking about the poetry in motion. Generaly we are barflies and like more subdued atmospheres...but we had heard about the energy at the bar and could not resist. WE LOVED MARK and TOMMY. At first we weren't sure who was supposed to be taking care of us then realized as it got busier how much the whole exprience relied on team work. In short being a couple that dines about alot we appreciated the direct humor and banter that Mark supplied. He helped us pick out some wine to pair with our artisan cheeses and managed to take stellar care of us in spite of it being very busy. Thank you Blue Hour for a great first experience...we loved what we saw!!! Pros: Atmosphere and whitty staff (bartenders) Cons: gets crowded late... more

Surprisingly good food/service for such a hip scene 10/3/2007

Given the large bar scene - the quality of the dining room food was a very pleasant surprise. Excellent, varied menu with seafood and game standouts. Do not miss the cheese cart - they take their frommage seriously - to the point they have TWO frommagiers! Lovely (and lively) room. Service is very attentive and professional. Advance reservations are a must to get a good table. Pros: Excellent food, good service, pretty room w/pretty people, great cheese cart. Cons: bar crowd can be loud - reserve a table far from bar. more
