I had been taking my found pup there since he was a month old and through the times of vaccination period time. I have came to an understanding.\r 1.Receptionists are not very up too date on client, animal care. Also via phone etiquette's truly are in dire need of major customer care as well!! \r 2.Vets: out of the 2 Doc.'s that are working the Female vet is TOP-NOTCH!! Very mindful to the patient (pet) and owner. The Male vet on the other hand... hmmmm nicely put" it's time for him to retire" very callus, temperamental, robotic as well as ruff handling of pet and owner if you can't read his mind on how or how not to interact during medical session. \r 3.Cleanliness (POOR) scared to see what the over night kennel looks like. FYI: If you must leave over night or more be sure to bring them in your own comfortable carrier and bring own food and water. \r 4. Cost wise AWESOME very affordable! \r So Owner's know this you may request what vet see's your animal as I have. Ask only to have ap more

More Positive than Negative: 9/15/2011

I was reading all the reviews on the Blue cross animal hospital and felt so sad. I have my baby she is a apricot pug and she has been going to the Blue Cross since I got her at 5 weeks and she will be 2 in November this year. I am Married and have 4 grown children and always wanted to have a dog of my own but had to wait until I had no kids and could afford animal care. So now my kids are on their own and when I got my Bella I researched clinics and found them to be so expensive and i didn't know what to do. When I went to Blue Cross it was great and very affordable, but yes the place is old and could use a little cleaning. The girls in the front are so busy with walk-ins and phone calls that they lose their train of thought and start rolling eyes but they don't mean it. I enjoyed the last year in a half but I think it is time to move on, I want a vet that knows my dog by her name and her diagnosis if any. I want one that will take the time to answer any questions and not hurry more

we love the place & the people. 5/22/2011

I breed shah tzu's. Dr.Janes did a c-section, I got to help get the pups breathing, in the operating room. The level of care was excellent. Years ago they saved a dog from parvovirus, he lived. Ya, no soft music, doggy facials, just smart, caring staff, two great vets and reasonable prices. I just helped one of my girls deliver ten puppies here at home. I have learned from the vets what to do, when to panic, when not to, they are all doing great. \r Blue Cross has helped me be a better breeder & pet owner with their straight shooting advice and knowledge. \r I drop off bath towels I buy at yard sales for them, I donate anything I think they can use, I smile and remain patient when the front staff are having a tough day. \r I do these things because Blue Cross does so many good things for so many pets in the community without pay or praise. \r I try to read up on what disease are around, learn the symptoms, keep my pets clean, healthy, well fed and remember they are vets not Gods, ani more

Gizmo Nakama 3/26/2011

All of my dogs have been Blue Cross clientele, my parents' dogs, all of my family members. Dr. Allison and Dr. Jayne have been their vets for life. While the place does need renovating, the price that you pay for services cannot be compared to anywhere on this island. \r \r When my dog Gizmo, age 18 needed to be put down, I called Dr. Allison and he met me at the hospital on a late Sunday night and allowed Gizmo to pass to the Rainbow Bridge without another day of suffering. There is not a day that I don't think of Gizmo and cry but knowing that he is in a better place gives me relief. I don't know of another hospital that would have been so reasonable, including the cremation and urn. \r \r I am happy and thankful for Blue Cross, most of the staff are nice if you are nice to them. \r \r Don't go there expecting ambiance, there is none. Go in there knowing that your pet will be cared for with reasonable care and no unnecessary expense, Dr. Allison does not believe in overcharging and I tha more

Unacceptable 3/14/2011

My cat almost died and is holding on by a thread from us making the huge mistake of taking him to the Blue Cross. I would urge everyone to please not bring your pet to this animal hospital. We brought him in because he was losing weight and were worried, other than losing weight he was eating fine and alert and acting like normal. The doctors there did not do a thorough check of him and gave him a steroid shot which they said would last a month and would increase his appetite. Being concerned owners and wanting the best for him we listened to the doctor and they gave it to him. Since taking him home from Blue Cross he lost his apetite and could not eat for the next day and a half. We woke up in the morning to him being so weak that ants were crawling all over him and he couldn't get up to move. Every time he tried to stand up he would fall over from exhaustion and would lie there listlessly. Finally he would lie on the floor not reacting to anything, gasping for breath before w more

Needs investigating 8/13/2010

I should have walked out after the interview. The male vet did nothing but complain about his staff and told me not to bring in anything valuable because his staff would steal it. I came in the next day anyway and it was a huge mistake. The female vet is very rude. I was shown around the building and that was when I decided I was not coming back to work there. There is nothing sterile about this place. Their isolation room is no more than 2 feet from their 'operating table'. And by operating table I mean a thick pitted concrete slab with an IV pole standing next to it. It reeks of urine in the waiting room and I can tell you the stink is so concentrated in the back by the cages it will make your eyes water. Yes their prices are cheap, but you get what you pay for in this instance. I would never take my pets there into those conditions even to receive routine shots. I worked there for a total of 4 hours and walked out in disgust. more

So we've heard .... 3/26/2010

First of all ...\r \r If you don't like the hospital because it isn't 'fancy' then why don't you donate some money OR you can go find yourself a 'fancy' Animal hospital and get a 'fancy' Hospital bill. \r \r & these doctor's are not 'Death' doctors, their humans, and they make mistakes. Blaming them WON'T bring back your beloved pet, trust me, I KNOW.\r \r Now as for the women in the front with their STINK attitudes, their just like that, trust me, I've worked with them. Haha.\r \r Prices ? Well of course they vary from pet to pet, BUT I still find them cheap enough that I wont faint when I see the bill, I just puke in my mouth ... a little. more

I give it 3 star. 2/13/2010

Well first of all the workers there are very nice and friendly. When we first arrived it was okay but when we entered, the building smelled of pet hair and urine. The Air Conditioning system was just making the smell worse. But, they have cheap food and are much cheaper than the other vets on the island. more

Good care, nice vet. 2/9/2010

When our dog abruptly began bleeding profusely from her nose at 10 p.m. one night, our regular vet was not available and I found Blue Cross in the yellow pages. The vet was about to leave, but agreed to wait while we drove from across town. He saw our dog, diagnosed her and checked her out. He then had us wait about an hour while he did paper work, so that he could be sure things were under control. The total bill, including blood work, was just over $100. His diagnosis was that someone had put rat poison where she could get it. He handled our dog gently and seemed to know his stuff. I am grateful for the excellent care he provided. We have since seen him for other matters. The place is very busy, and the parking situation is humbug. This is a good place to know about. more

Blue Cross Animal Hospital is cheap and good for some things 10/2/2009

I've been to Blue Cross Animal Hospital with my dog, rabbit, and cats. Here's my take on them. Blue Cross Animal Hospital doesn't charge an arm and a leg for things like many other local vets seem to. A couple of other vets I've visited charge like $35 right off the bat before they've even touched your pet! Cha-Ching! I've gotten good allergy care for my dog at Blue Cross. They also neutered a bunny I had for a much lower price than other places. They also helped one of the semi-feral cats from a cat colony that I take care of. Other places were unwilling to see these wild cats. Blue Cross has also done toe nail clipping for free. They don't charge as much for medicines and they give you samples much more readily than other places. They will see you without an appointment however you MUST be prepared to wait. The wait can take as long as two hours if you don't have an appointment. I've never been sent away because I didn't have an appointment. I like that about them. more

Blue Cross Animal Hospital has extremely poor phone service 8/24/2009

I am very upset with the receptionsist service at the Blue Cross Animal Hospital. They would do good to take a phone ettiquette class... and it would be even better if the Vets would know how awful their customer service is over the phone. they are the first impression and they stink Being in the customer service health industry my self I know it gets busy on the front but that is no excuse to be short and rude on the phone. If you can't handle your job then quit! more

A-Okay Job :D 7/1/2009

The Blue Cross Hospital is an okay place to let your pet go to. I would give this place a 3 star. Its cheap but its a dirty place :O I let my dog stay here for 1 month because i had to go to Vietnam for a trip. So i had to board my dog at the Clinic. VERY BAD IDEA. When i came back, my puppy was as skinny as a stick. And she got bitten bu other dogs on the ears >:O. On the other hand, they give your dog a toenail clipping, WITHOUT ASKING! And the price is very reasonable too. more

Awful treatment, They are death doctors. 6/29/2009

Blue Cross Animal Hospital on Kapiolani. Vet ethics. What is acceptable? Should a beloved pregnant mother cat dropped off a vet (I was told to leave her) be given surgery to deliver five live babies, and then the after care neglected so much that four of the five babies die? Does not 24 hour emergency care denote proper feeding of five innocent newborns that must be fed every two hours? They never had a chance! They let them starve to death, nor were we given the option to take the babies home and bottle feed them ourselves. After paying HUNDREDS of dollars for their care we are now grieving the loss of innocents that should still be alive. I am filing ethics complaints to every agency I can think of. May they be accountable for their bad business practices and lack of compassion. more

quality care 1/31/2009

I have been to alot of veterinary clinics in my short life time because growing up i've had the priviledge of being able to have quite alot of animals and when i say alot i mean alot!but anyway coming to blue cross has made me so happy to be able to surrounded by different types of animals it fulfills my day. I must say even though it is old-fashioned there and Dr. Allison and Dr. Jayne are one of the very many hardest working people that i've come across when it comes to helping you with your pets needs this is the hospital i would certainly recommend can't get any better than that. may be a little old a little fix here and there but how's that supposed to help your pet i'm sure your pets there to get better not to ensure blue cross is hi-tech and all so thats all for now! more

Great and economical vet 8/29/2008

I was put off a bit by some of the negative reviews but when our 6 yo dog of 1 month (off Craigslist) fell very ill very fast I took her to another vet who checked her for heartworms (negative), tested positive for a tick borne disease (EHRLICHIOSIS she was tick infested when we got her) and then wanted to hospitalize her and run more tests amounting to $1k, I just couldn't afford that (and believe me a got a good dose of self-righteous attitude and guilt tripping for that fact - and I will add for one simple visit, test, and bottle of antibiotics it was well over $100). I got the round of antibiotics for the Ehrlichiosis and thought to wait for a few days before doing anything else since she was still eating (though I had to hold her by the food because she was too weak to stand). I was distraught. My husband wanted to put her down because she wasn't getting better.\r \r Out of desperation I called Blue Cross and they said to come in there was no wait. The doctor not only saw her immedi more

Just be careful 8/15/2008

As a former vet tech of almost 10yrs, the only advice I would give potential clients is to do your homework. Ask the veterinarian specifics on his or her specialties. Inquire about how many times he/she has done a procedure. If it is something routine, it would be up to you at the time, anything more than that, I would suggest looking elsewhere, but I also can understand cost. So, if it is a last resort, the bottom line is your pet needs help. Over the years, I have encountered many second opinions and outraged people who have entrusted their pets to Blue Cross. Seeing their pet first hand and reading the diagnosis and/or seeing the service (or high lack thereof) was an eye opener. I've never heard so many overall bad complaints and of animals dying for no preventable reason in all the years I've worked with animals. Staff may be friendly and helpful, but remember, they are not the doctor. They just follow procedure. Just a heads up for anyone inquiring. more

This is an excellent animal clinic and hospital. Our male cat suffered a blockage and was an inpatient for more than a week. We have transferred our other three pets' records there. more

Incompetent and Abusive Vet 4/15/2008

When I applied for a position as a vet tech at this hospital, I thought that I would be doing something that I loved, helping animals, while gaining valuable experience. However, from the first day that I worked, all that I heard from the others who worked with the animals was how incompetent and abusive Dr. Allynson is. I heard horror stories of dogs being punched and of cats dying from burst bladders because the vet pressed far too hard when he was trying to evacuate them. One of the most responsible and capable people there said that the only reason that she continues to work there is to save the animals from the vet, i.e. she does a lot of the work that he would be messing up if she weren't there. The day that a perfectly healthy dog died because it had apparently been given a double dose of drugs was my last day working at the facility. (The dog had come in for a routine teeth cleaning.) The conditions are horrible; I wonder if he even knows the definition of the word sterile. If more
