great color, great cut 2/9/2010

on time, great color, good cut, nice extra's, good rates, salon a little noisy, otherwise recommend it highly Pros: great color, great cut Cons: a little noisy in the salon more

Had a great service at great price! 1/28/2010

Dustin Shronts, at The Aveda Institute, is a budding genius here in the triangle! He gave beautiful and radiant highlights....QUICKLY! I wasn't in the chair forever! Best haircut I've had in years! I am going back again! Hurry though, he graduates soon! Pros: Great price Cons: Had to drive to Chapel Hill more

The best thing to happen to beauty in the RTP 1/27/2010

This is not a 'college of beauty' as I have ever experienced before. Every haircut that I and my daughter have received from the stylists in training have been as good or better than I have had anywhere else in the country (note I have not received services in CA). I have waited over a month to get into salons in major cities for a top stylist, pay twice the 'going rate' (which is way more than you'll pay here) to walk out with hair and a style that I couldn't wait to change and hated wearing every day until then. The stylists here have always made my hair, and I, look much better. The other services here are good too. Everything is checked and re-checked, the products are much more healthy than any other traditional salon, and the staff and students are really great and want you to be happy! Maybe going in with an expectation of this is a school made my first visit so impressive, but after that they still have never let me down. I hope they keep up the great work. Thanks to Dion for letting me in on this 'secret' to her great looking hair. Pros: Great haircuts, great price Cons: stylists leave more

beauty bargain 1/26/2010

It is the best bargain to be had if you need/ want color done. Aveda products are great. I've used them for years. The students are all very professional and check everything w/ a teacher before they start cutting or coloring. Pros: cheap - great products - professional Cons: once in a while I've had to get a redo more

great place for hairstyles, cut and colors, spa too 1/26/2010

Friendly service, great products, cutting edge styles, excellent color products and very knowledgable staff Pros: very enthusiastic students Cons: no cons, cheaper than regular salons also more

awesome place 1/26/2010

I've been going to Aveda for two years now and have always gotten a great hair color and highlights. It does take a bit longer but worth it since the price is so much less than other places. Pros: Best salon more

Love my highlights from Aveda 11/13/2009

I've been going to Aveda for two years now and have always gotten a great hair color and highlights. The school is top notch and they always make certain the customer likes the service provided before the customer leaves. I've also had a few spa treatments - the only downside to that is the incredibly small curtained rooms - but the service is terrific. It does take a bit longer as the other reviewers mentioned but worth it since the price is so much less than other places. more

Aveda Institute Chapel Hill is the place to go 11/10/2009

I've visited Aveda several times since moving to the area. I like the atmosphere and the experience that focuses more on the technical aspects of hair care. You can actually learn something! The instructors are always present for consultation and to assist if needed and the students are excited about their work. I've gotten some good advice and feel comfortable trying new things that they suggest. Be prepared to spend a LONG time for an appointment. If you go in with this knowledge, you will be fine. If not, you will be annoyed. Keep in mind that it is a training facility and there are tradeoffs. The prices are great but the primary reason for the institute is to teach students. I have found that they are willing to spend as much time and provide as much help as possible to the less skillful students to make the outcome a positive one. Thanks Aveda! more

A Great Deal! 11/2/2009

I had a positive experience at Aveda in Chapel Hill. I went in for a haircut with some idea of what I wanted, and my student helped me to better plan the style. She seemed very knowledgeable. I really enjoyed the complementary tea, hair wash and mini-facial. Although the haircut took a while, I had been warned about this, and it did not detract from the high level of service. The students seem to really care about what they are doing. more

Great for facials! 10/29/2009

I have received the elemental nature facial several times and am usually very impressed with the technician. Because this is a training facility, I have received services from people with varied levels of experience, but that is the trade-off for the very low and reasonable prices. I can't imagine getting a facial of such high quality for $45 elsewhere (and one that lasts 90 minutes!). I have received a few hair services (haircuts, highlights) and have similar mixed experiences - some haircuts were more expert than others. My husband also goes consistently and has had one negative experience within the last five. When I called and complained, the manager was very apologetic, and we were taken care of accordingly. I would highly recommend this Institute for routine beauty needs. more

Aveda Institute Chapel Hill is a fabulous value for facials 10/29/2009

I have had regular facials at Aveda and have had great service at a reasonable cost each time. The students and instructors have always been good and some of the students have been outstanding. I highly recommend the facial services! more

expectations met and in some cases exceeded 10/28/2009

I went in a few weeks ago to get a trim/layer touchup and a make-up lesson. I asked for an advanced student because I was doing this in preparation for med school interviews, meaning that it had to be JUST right. My primary complaint is that the experience took a long time and I had to wait. I arrived on time for my appointment, but had to wait about 20 minutes for my student to be ready. Once he was, however, he was just what I like! He was graduating in only a month or two, and he was not afraid (nor too ignorant) to offer advice. When I described what I wanted as "blah blah layering a certain way blah" in order to reduce volume as the end result, he suggested a slightly better way of producing the result I wanted (which I was happy to take him up on as I am no stylist!). Although my request was quite simple, I was nonetheless very satisfied with the result. It was pretty cool too that you get the free shampoo and facial. For the make-up lesson, I again had to wait, this ti more

Nightmare at Aveda Institute Chapel Hill is 10/15/2009

nightmare! I went there to have a full highlight the "stylist" pulled the lightening agent over hair that was already lightened. My hair turned white, practically melted off and fell out into the book I was reading. AVOID more

Great Color and Cut! 5/13/2009

As soon as I walked in, I was offered tea and didn't have to wait long for my stylist. I knew exactly how I wanted my hair to look and my stylist had no problem translating this into the final look. She was very competent with the techniques and was charming to talk to. I had all the confidence in her and she made my hair look awesome! I was very happy with my experience and everything was so inexpensive! more

Place is declining in quality and value 5/4/2009

The hairstylists really don't have a clue about what looks good and suits different face. I had to fight with a couple of them to get the kind of haircut I wanted and when they were done, it looked amazing and I got a lot of compliments. But it was their job to figure out what would look good on me. And it was silly that I had to spend time arguing with them and watching them sigh and roll their eyes.\r \r Also: it all depends on which overworked and underpaid sweatshop laborer...er...stylist you get. All of them are in pain from standing all day and exhausted and dirt poor. Some are nice. Most are fed up and hate their customers. Can't say I blame 'em especially after I saw one of them get berated in front of me. But as a customer, I won't pay for anyone to be bitchy at me.\r \r Some of the instructors are knowledgeable. Many aren't. Many are just as exhausted and overworked as the poor students. So you won't get close attention every time.\r \r It takes FOREVER to cut your hair here and th more

DO NOT GO HERE!!! 4/18/2009

I went the night of my rehearsal dinner on my wedding weekend with an appointment, and they kept me waiting more than 30 minutes beyond my appointment time. The two girls running the frond desk were WRETCHED - so rude and not understanding or even willing to help me out. I was beside myself upset and powerless to do anything about it. Finally someone had pity on me and did a blow dry, but they did a mediocre job and my hair did not look great - a huge disappointment on the one weekend of your life that you want to look great and are having pictures taken, etc. Furthermore, the service was so insulting and the energy in the salon was so bad - I just didn't need that. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! They should be paying people to come there more

Stay AWAY! 11/8/2008

This place is terrible. I'm a college student and in an effort to save a little bit of money I decided to come here after reading some of the reviews. I booked an appointment for a cut, and when I got there my stylist had a name tag on that said "Advanced", which is supposed to be good, right?\r WRONG. I got there at 1pm and I brought a few pictures with me of haircuts I DID want, and haircuts I DID NOT want. I had to explain what I wanted 10 times to the stylist and the instructor, and even when they said they understood it was obvious they did not. Now, the cut I wanted is not complicated. I had very long hair, and I wanted a bob with a little layering. Nothing funky, nothing crazy, just. a. bob.\r \r When she shampooed me, I'm pretty sure she skipped my bangs and the hair near my neck, and I did not get any kind of neck or head massage like I keep reading about. Then she begins cutting my hair, leaving to go get her instructor every 5 minutes to come check things/fix things. I was expe more

Serious problems 10/27/2008

As a former student at Aveda, I have incredibly mixed feelings about the Chapel Hill institute. On one hand, staying busy with back to back clients during my time there left me better prepared as a stylist than anyone I know coming from different schools. On the other hand, I was appalled by their treatment of students and their failure to hire licensed, qualified cosmetology teacher. They try to advertise the institute as a place that nurture's stylist's creativity but this place is basically run as a sweat shop and the administrative staff care about money first and the education of their students last. I did not receive the minimum requirements for classroom hours and was often left to figure out how to do hair for myself. The classroom work I did receive was mostly training for the state board exams and very little practical education. \r \r However, all that said, Aveda is a fantastic place to get cheap services, especially facials. I had about half of my regular clients follo more

Union Baptist Church Couples Ministry 9/5/2008

I loved my stylist at Aveda. She was very personable and knowledgeable about the relaxer that I requested on one occasion and color on the next visit. She is a senior level student and did a fine job. I will go again in hopes of getting this student or another of equal skills. more

Wonderful experience 10/2/2007

I went in for a relaxer, cut, and style. I was very impressed with my stylist. She was very attentive. Her instructor guided her through accomplishing the relaxer. I really appreciated how thorough she was at basing my scalp. I did not burn at all! I brought a picture of the cut and style I wanted. I think she got it spot on! I have gotten compliments from my clients when I went on appointments this afternoon. My girlfriend said my hair looks the best she has ever seen it. I like that Aveda products do not weigh down my hair. I will definitely be going back. I am sad that my stylist is moving back home after she graduates. more
