Best

Ate there last night with a group of old friends. Haven't been to L.A. for awhile and it was nice to be back in the city. Loved the small plate concept, had a few things I'd only ...

Nice looking room, cooly sophisticated but overall I left feeling kind of ... eh.. about the whole thing. Food was much ado about not much. Wine list was good, but not the holy g...

Suzanne I Remember You When... 8/1/2004

This place has good, not great food. For the price, it is rich. But you are in LA. Having had Ms. Goin's cuisine in Boston, many moons ago, I know how talented she is and is wasting her skill set on a clientele that is more interested in seeing and being seen than eating. I may not be a size 2, but I would have enjoyed eating more if the first few plates would have wowed my palate. Sorry, chef, but come back east where you belong and show us what you've got. Pros: wine list , service more

A Great Experience 6/4/2004

Went on a Saturday night. Our reservation was for 8:15PM, and we were seated promptly. The wine list was amazing. You can have wines by the glass, carafe, or by the bottle. We went with the carafe route since we wanted to sample different dishes with different wines, and that worked out really well. Some dishes we liked include brucetta with goat cheese and honey, their cucumber and avocado salad with green goddess dressing, and their arroz negro with calamari. The skirt steak was also good. The dishes are not big, which means you need two dishes per person, tapas style. But it does allow you to sample many different dishes, which is a definite plus. The service was good and knowledgeable. The crowd is casual dressy and not too rowdy. Our bill was about $60 per person including entrees, wines, dessert, coffee, tax and tip. A great experience. Pros: Great Variety, Great wine list more

Going downhill 5/20/2004

Recently had dinner at AOC for the third time. The food has gone down hill since its early days. Was there a management change in the kitchen??? the dishes seem to be put together with no thought proccess and finished with butter, very amatuer. Some of the old favorites are still on the menu but watch out for the new stuff; Pork confit over a buttery mess of a gratin, Halibut over a buttery risoto finished with more butter, Vegetables finished with butter etc... what happened to texture, balance, it all seems to have vanished Pros: wine list more

Disappointing Service 5/17/2004

Lovely hostesses, pleasant atmosphere, but a surly waitress really spoiled the evening. For $150+ evening, I don't need extra attitude and snarky responses. I also didn't appreciate that all of our dishes came out at once leaving us with no room on the table, that's hardly the point of a tasting menu. I certainly wouldnt ever return to the restaurant with a client. Food was good; meats were oversalted, but the other dishes that I had (chicken liver crositin and squash) were very good. Wine list was fantastic. Dessert was excellent. It's a shame the service was so poor. Pros: Atmosphere, Food, Wine Cons: , Expense, Crowded more

All about the experience 4/8/2004

Id been to the bar at AOC. I think thats the way to go. We were sat a little late, expected for a busy night. But our table was in something like an alcove. Not the dining room, not the patio. We were tucked away in the corner of the stairway. It was downright depressing. Make sure if you go that you dont sit there. The food is great, just don't go hungry or you might have to eat when you get home. Overall, Id much rather sit at the bar and eat a couple appetizers late night. more

Bum rush 3/7/2004

Why did they give our group of six a 9:30 reservation if that was effectively too late? We were exactly on time for reservation. Seated and selecting wines when the waitress told us to make our food selections soon because kitchen was closing at 10pm?! We were finished with food just before 11pm. Some in party ordered after dinner drinks when waitress returns to say bar is closed because the clock just struck 11pm?! This place is overrated. Food was fine, ambience was fine. Not worth the hype and the prices. more

tasty food, aloof waiter 12/15/2003

...my second time there. Food was just as great, though the cooks had a heavy hand with the butter...but yummmmmy! Our waiter gave the impression that she didn't really want to be there. She seemed annoyed by our questions, and then brought our desserts and the check at the same time! (No one was waiting for our table, and we weren't the last ones in the place...) *I love the food, but will choose a different restaurant next time where the waiter doesn't give attitude. Pros: food, food, food, host (Martin?) Cons: waiter's attitude, too much butter more

well worth it! 12/7/2003

it took us a few tries to get the time we wanted but it was well worth the wait. we were seated promptly the service was great. the space is beautifully designed. it has a very comfortable feel to just hang out, drink wine and sample the wonderful assortment of small plates. more

Yummay! 11/30/2003

I was very happy with my visit to AOC. My BF and I ordered 8 ""main"" dishes, 2 desserts and several rounds of wine. We were stuffed and happy. My favorite dishes were the warm pear salad, the sweet potatoes with bacon, the blackened cod with brussel sprouts and the lamb. For dessert, I highly recommend the marscapone pana cotta. :) We even saw a celeb there the night we went. The only downer was the tight seating... I almost knocked the side of my neighbor's table, and I'm a tiny girl! All-in-all, an excellent choice! more

Culinary adventure! 11/4/2003

AOC will persuade you to try foods you never thought you would--like braised pork cheeks--and then you can't believe you've lived this many years without it!! Be adventurous, educate your palatte, broaden your culinary repertoire...you will be SO happy that you took a chance! FABULOUS! Pros: variety Cons: noisy more

Terrific Tapas 11/1/2003

I love eating in a place where I can taste alot of different wines and dishes, A.O.C. is my kind of place. Three of us went and we were able to taste 10 dishes and 10 wines. Dishes that were stand outs were the arroz negro, clams with chorizo and braised pork cheeks. The wine list by the glass is diverse and well priced. All in all a great dining experiance! Pros: diversity Cons: noisey more

wonderful 10/31/2003

I went there recently with my boyfriend. We did the champagne tasting, had several dishes, cheese, and dessert- EVERYTHING was delicious! Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful and helped us pick exactly what we wanted! I would definitely reccommend it- the bathrooms are pretty as well! Pros: great food, wine and champagne, waitress very helpful Cons: parking, small more

Fantastic Experience 10/3/2003

I always had an incredible experience. The food is fantastic, even for vegetarian. The service is appropriate and the wine list is perfect not too long but varied. Enjoy the meal! more

EXCELLENT! 9/17/2003

My partner and I had an incredibly wonderful experience here. Being vegetarians did not relegate us to the usual plate of grilled vegetables, the wine list was very good, and the service was fantastic. I was glad we made a reservation since the communal table had quite a line early on. The food here is increibly delicious and served in small portions for 2 to share. All were flavorful and interesting. Would have liked to see more variety in the ""flights"" of wine. more

Wonderful dining experience 9/12/2003

Upon being seated, we were immediately greeted with a warm, knowledgeable waitress. She reviewed the wine list with us, giving great recommendations based on our tastes. They were excellent recommendations - she really knew her wine! She then patiently guided us through the potentially overwhelming menu, the choices at AOC being fresh and unique. All our dishes were delectable! Some favorites - the bacon-wrapped, parmesan stuffed dates (of course!), the clams with chorizo, and the dessert that I can't quite remember the name of but was basically a brioche topped with a scrumptious plum sauce and rich cream. All in all, a satisfying experience and I can't wait to go back! Pros: Variety of wine & foo, Service Cons: A bit loud, Tables are cramped more

Subtlety & Juxtaposition are AOC 9/5/2003

The more you know about food and the possibilities that taste, texture, smell, and temperature can play in food, the more you will love going to AOC. And the more you will love going back. The taste of a perfectly fried egg is not lost on many people, but put that hot egg on top of a frisee salad with crispy brioche, and you almost have to stop and think about what is going on in your mouth. That one dish alone taught me more about what it takes to make food transcend sustinence than the two years I've worked in restaurant kitchens. Having said that, this restaurant is not for everyone. But don't take anyone else's word for it--find out for yourself. Pros: grazing food, sharing food, light bite Cons: loud more

Not worth it 9/2/2003

Vegetarians Stay away. Heavy on meat, chicken, sausage and liver and very light on fish. Salmon and Albacore were awful. Great Wine, Cheese and one pasta dish...otherwise don't waste your time on this so called ""posh"" place. Our Waitress was AWFUL and gave us nothing but attitude. Horrible experience. It's 15 minutes of fame is over! Pros: Great Patio upstairs, Wine, Cheese Cons: Everything else! more

What gives? 8/12/2003

We were so disappointed with this restaurant. Why all the hype? Nothing was tasty. Some of the wines were ineteresting but all in all this place sucked! more

A.O.C. is killer 7/2/2003

I went to A.O.C. fully expecting decent food at an above average price. I was wrong on both...AMAZING food and GREAT prices. I was stunned. I knew the food would be good, but the tapas far exceeded my expectations. I was with 3 other people, and we ordered about 10 things. We weren't looking at prices, we just wanted to have a good meal. We all ate plenty, we had 2 bottles of great wine, and coffee and desert...$45 bucks per person. I was shocked. I would have easily spent $80 per person and felt like I got my money's worth. If you CAN get in, go there! more

I eat there all the time! 6/14/2003

Yes I do eat there all the time. Reservations are hard to wrangle so I just come by early and sit at the bar. The bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with parmesan are the perfect combo of salty & sweet. Love the charcuterie and cheese selection. The plates are tiney but that's a welcome change from oversized portions everywhere else. Fun wine selection! Pros: Food, Wine Cons: reservations, parking more
