Zachary's is too hectic and diners seem squeezed too tightly - seated far too close together. The pizza is ""all sauce"" I'm really not sure why this pizza gets so many rave rev...

This place totally lives up to the hype. I've never had Chicago-style pizza, so I can't compare on that front, but Zachary's stuffed pizza is reall... more

long wait for average pie 9/29/2006

What a confusing system. Wait for a number, then wait to order, then wait for a table, then wait for a server, then wait for your drinks, then wait for your pizza, wait for a server, wait for your bill......get the picture. I don't get it. I am an East coaster and I have never seen pizza like this before. This place wouldn't make it 2 months in Chicago. Tried the place 2 times( I am a glutton for punishment) had the deep dish and the thin crust. What kind of dough is this. Raw on the inside and hard as wood on the outside. What is all the Fuss. NEVER would I step foot inside again. Pros: good way to waist a couple hours if you really need to Cons: Pizza, service..... more

Wait a LONG time for YAF Mediocre Bay Area Pizza 9/12/2006

The ""Chicago"" and ""new york"" pizzas are about as authentic and Milli Vanilli and the Piltdown man. dont waste 10 minutes waiting for a number + 50 minutes waiting for a table + 5 minutes waiting for food(if you pre-order) only to eat the same lame pizza you can get anywhere in this Pizza Wasteland called California. Pros: Not likely to cause immediate death. Cons: More bad california pizza. Not Authentic, Not good. more

Best pizza in the world. 8/19/2006

My dad has taken my family of 6 to Zach's since I was a baby. It has the best taste I've ever tasted in my life. I love Zach's. If anyone wants some amazing pizza, go here! Pros: Great pizza Cons: Can get busy more

Best deep dish in the bay. 6/14/2006

By far the best pizza I've ever tasted. It is always crowded so I generally get take out. The half baked pizzas are also a great idea. Pros: BEST PIZZA EVER Cons: Crowded, no reservations, cash only more

The best! 4/25/2006

I grew up in Chicago, and for me, deep dish pizza is the *only* pizza there is :) Zachary's is at least as good as any of the Chicago deep dish outfits, and maybe better. Of the major Chicago deep dish places, I think Zachary's is closest to Giordano's in terms of crust style and flavor. If you don't like deep dish, try Cheeseboard in Berkeley. I like their food too, but it's not pizza in my book :) more

This pizza is the best in the world! 3/27/2006

I travel a lot- and have eaten a lot of pizza. This is without a doubt- THE BEST pizza in the world. It is always as good as I remember and the first bite is as good as the last. Delicious and delicious. Owners are very nice, as is the wait staff, but the pizza is really the best. Did I mention it was the best? It is! Pros: Pizza, Beer, Salad Cons: not in NC more

If you want real pizza go to cheeseboard. It's not worth the wait Pros: tomato sauce Cons: long wait more

Absolutely Fabulous! 3/2/2006

The best pizza ever!!! Go for the Stuffed Mediterranean- it is SO good! They are always crowded but the service is really great- you know they are working hard! A great alternative is to take home a half-baked pizza. No trip to the East Bay is complete without a stop at Zachary's!! (Both locations are great!) Pros: Pizza, Service, Draught Beer more

Long Wait for Great Pizza 2/26/2006

I've never seen this place without a LONG wait. There are plenty of places around the area but if pizza's what you want, nowhere else can compare. Pros: DEEP-DISH! Cons: wait more

Best Deep Dish outside of Chicago 7/16/2005

This is hands the best deep dish pizza outside of Chicago. If this place were in Chicago, they'd be competition. The filling is just so good, and topped with just enough sauce. The crust is nice and doughy, just the way I like it. Too bad this place is only in Berkeley, they should open one up in San Francisco. Pros: Deep Dish Pizza, Filling, Dough Cons: Not in SF, Always crowded more

The biggest mystery in East Bay dining 3/28/2005

There are always crowds in front of this place but my husband and I cannot fathom how the pizza became so popular. We called it ""stewed tomato pie."" And even if one were inclined toward that sort of dish, the stewed tomatoes lack flavor and spice and you end up with a bland melange of tomatoes and melted cheese. We went a second time out of fairness, and ordered their regular pizza. It was loaded, again, with the tasteless tomato sauce and I spent most of my dinner scraping off tomatoes and trying to get some semblance of flavor from what remained. There are SO many great pizzas in the East Bay. It blows my mind this place is rated so well. I would not recommend Zachary's but by all means, go there if you like and leave room for the rest of us at other spots on Saturday night. more

Fabulous Pizza 3/21/2005

This place has the best deep dish pizza that I've ever had. The pizza is nice and thick, full of cheese and just so good. They have a bunch of toppings that you can have on the pizza and overall, the price is very reasonable. Go early as the place gets packed. more

Warm 3/11/2005

Don't sit in - you'll wait for ages. The half-baked feature is extremely convient, and arguably the best way to fulfill your desire for freshly baked and well-seasoned pizza. Their crust is excellent, and their well-stuffed deep dishes are satisfyingly flavorful. Pros: Rich Cons: Wait more

Best pizza on the planet 1/21/2005

This is the BEST pizza on the planet. Try it for yourself and see more

Hmmmm... 8/27/2004

I like Zach's and even get cravings for a Zach's deep dish from time to time. But I cannot understand how it rates so highly. The pizza is good, fresh zesty ingredients, and large hefty, messy pies. But I grew up in the east bay and don't know of a single person who would rate this place as the best in the eastbay. Best deep dish maybe, and definitely a top 10 in the eastbay. They do have a plethora of fans though, as it is very crowded at peak hours. For service, ambiance and pizza I much prefer Lococo's and if I had to eat pizza everyday I would choose Amici's, Rustica or Bette's OVD. Pros: Hearty zesty pizza, Unique special pies, ? Cons: , No ambiance, Loud and stark (oak) more

The Best Stuffed Pizza in the Bay Area 6/13/2004

I have grown up on Zachary's Stuffed Pizzas, and it is a real treat whenever I have one now. They are the best!! They are a little expensive compared to a lot of other places, but it is definitely worth it!! I don't usually eat there, because it is so crowded. I take one home. I wish you guys would expand to accommodate all the diners, so it isn't such a madhouse in there all the time. Everyone I talk to says the Cheeseboard Pizza is the best, but you still can't beat Zachary's Chicago Style Stuffed Pizzas. Actually, I prefer your stuffed ones to your thin crusts. One last thing, it is great that you have started serving slices of pizza, but could you guys include slices of stuffed pizza also? Your whole ones are pretty expensive. Pros: Delicious Cons: , No slices of stuffed more

This is cuisine, not fast food 4/25/2004

I'm almost embarrassed to add to the effusive praise of others here, since I'm not usually one to 'follow the pack'. But let me tell you just how much this place rocks: 1) It's authentic (I spent my college years in Chicago). 2) The ingredients are fresh... crisp veggies, never soggy. 3) The sauce is tangy and flavorful and there's plenty of it. I just tried their super-veggie stuffed pizza tonight, and... man, it's like 2 servings of veggies in every humungous slice. And in this case, you sure don't have to beg me to eat my veggies! ;). Pros: Delicious, Filling, Quality food Cons: , So-so parking, Cash-only more

Years Later 12/11/2003

When I was 18 and in the Navy, some of my fellow shipmates introduced me to Zachary's. I only went there twice..and to this day (16 years later)where ever I go..I swear it's the best pizza in the world. I should know, I was born and raised in NY and have traveled this world over in the military. I have tried all kinds of pizza, it's my FAVORITE food ever. Zachary's ..hands down..THE BEST EVER. Teri Pros: inexpensive, great service, excellant taste Cons: too far away more

over rated 10/19/2003

Way over-rated and ""Chicago-style"" pizza posers. The crust is way too doughy (real chicago style deep-dish has a cornmeal crust). I could tolerate their pizza more if they didn't tout it as authentic.... it is certainly not something I would stand in line for. There is much better pizza with a lot less wait time elsewhere. more
