Best Vet ever! 10/16/2007

After being taken to the cleaners by Wells Branch Pet and Bird clinic over our dog's re-occurring skin infection, as a last desperate attempt to save his life we came to get a second opinion from Doctor Woods. Within the first few minutes of the visit, doctor Woods knew it was a thyroid problem, and ordered a T-4 test. We had spent thousands of dollars at the previous vet, and they never even thought to check the thyroid. They had finally told us it was an auto-immune disease and there was nothing more that could be done. more

Mixed review 8/6/2007

I visited Balcones Animal Hospital with one of my pets, as I am in the market for a new vet. After reading the great reviews here, I decided to give it a try. I made the appointment easily, but wondered why I was not asked for my phone number (what if the appt needed to be cancelled by the office for some reason?). The hospital itself is a bit worn indeed. But, that did not deter me, as I'd rather have a great vet with a heavily used office than a so-so vet in a state of the art office. The front desk lady was very friendly. I felt a bit uneasy to have to take my cat out of his kennel in the front lobby to be weighed (what if he had bolted and had to be chased frantically around the office? Just a thought). The wait time was average. The first person who arrived in the room I assumed was the vet assistant (he didn't introduce himself). He quickly began to give 3 shots and a nasal medication, without nary a word as to what he was doing. I did end up asking about the nasal med as this cat had never received it before, and he did end up explaining to me sufficiently what it was for. I assume the next person to come in was the vet, as he did not introduce himself either. He was quite friendly though with an appealing sense of humor. We needed to schedule an office procedure. My husband dropped off said cat in the am. He said it was very busy and he had a 10minute wait in line. He also had to take the cat out of the kennel for a weight (see above comment regarding this procedure). There wasn't any feedback as to how the procedure went, or what all was done. The bill he was given was hand written, and a couple of the charges were illegible . All in all, nothing really bad about this office, but there are enough odd things that occurred that will keep me looking for a new Veterinarian more

Best Vet Anywhere 7/17/2007

I don't know why anyone would take their animal anywhere else. It is nice to find a vet that actually cares more about your animal than selling you stuff you don't need. Everyone there was extremly nice and helpful. It was also very affordable. I am so glad I found this place! Pros: Affordable, great people Cons: I have not found one yet more

Best Vet I have been to 7/5/2007

My puppy had a hernia at 4 months. I took it to the vet on greystone drive. They did it for 150 with a spay. 1 month later she has a hernia again. They tell me that she is having reactions to the internal stiches so they have to do it again. They quote me 300?!?!? Then they feel sorry for me so they drop the price to 150. HA! I call dr. woods he tells me over the phone we will perform the surgery for 100 dollars with different type of stiches. Great. He does the surgery. 4 months later its back again. Dr. Woods said that the stitching on the inside is causing a reactions and the only way to deal with it is to stich her up from the outside. He performed the surgery again and also stiched up a cut on her foot (totally unrelated) for 50 bucks. Not a problem since then. Dr. Woods cares! Pros: very good doctors more

The BEST 6/5/2007

I have taken my cat to three different vets for a condition, and Doc Woods Jr. was the first vet to take the problem seriously. It took a while to get her better, but that's only because the doctor wouldn't quit. Various treatments were undertaken to get to the problem, and it didn't break the bank, either. I received personal attention from the doctor every time I called, and will continue to drive over 20 miles each direction just to see Dr. Jason. They really are the best. Pros: EVERYTHING!!! Personable, perseverant, and affordable. Cons: Distance, but that's not thier fault!!! more

YOU WOULD BE INSANE TO TAKE YOUR PETS ANYWHERE ELSE 5/16/2007

I TOOK MY DOG TO BANFIELD 3 TIMES, PAID 3 TIMES FOR A SICKNESS THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY. THE FIRST TIME DR. WOOD JR, SAW MY DOG HE TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG, PRECRIBED MEDS FOR MY DOG, IN ALL HE WAS WONDERFUL. I MOVED TO KILLEEN, ANOTHER ONE OF MY DOGS BECAME ILL, I TOOK HER TO A EASTLAKE VET CLINIC, IN KILLEEN, THEY TOOK INJECTION SAMPLES , AND OTHER TESTS THAT REQUIRED THEM TO SQEEZE MUSCLES, AND SENT ME HOME TO THINK ABOUT PUTTING MY DOG TO SLEEP, OR PAY 3000 FOR A SURGERY THAT WOULD MAYBE HELP HER. HERE I GO DRIVING 1 HOUR TO AUSTIN TO GET AN EDUCATED OPINION FROM DR. WOOD. ONCE AGAIN, HE PRESCRIBED MEDS FOR MY DOG, 3 DAYS LATER MY DOG WAS RECOVERING SLOWLY BUT SURELY. NEVER AGAIN WILL I WASTE 1 DOLLAR WITH ANY OTHER VET, I WILL DRIVE TO AUSTIN FROM KILLEEN, CAUSE I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE THEY TRULY ARE THE BEST. MY DOGS AND I ARE LUCKY TO HAVE DR. WOOD JR AND DR. WOOD SR, AND ALL THE WONDERFUL STAFF AT BALCONES ANIMAL HOSPITAL. Pros: EVERYTHING WAS PRO ABOUT BALCONES Cons: NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THEM......NOTHING AT ALL. more

The most wonderful Vets!!! 2/7/2007

I feel so lucky to have found this clinic. Both Dr. Wood sr. and Dr. Wood Jr. are truly wonderful, compassionate, caring, personable, knowledgable, available and overall just fabulous. I feel so lucky to have them as my vet. I actually live on the opposite side of town toward southwest austin and nevertheless drive all the way north just to be able to see them. Everytime I have called with an issue the staff has had the doctors call me and talk to me personally and this has happened numerous times. Even with minor issues they will get on the phone and generously dedicate their time to help you out. I absolutely adore them and would highly recommend them. more

You Can Stop Searching...This is The Place 1/25/2007

I had a dog for 12 years. Had him through High School, College and a few years after. He was my baby pie! I started taking him to Balcones during the ""golden years"" of his life and the treatment they provided was beyond excellent. He had gone blind with glaucoma and had an eye removed at one point. These folks were there every step of the way. When it came time to let my Jake go, I couldn't imagine another vet in the room when that had to happen. They were so caring and supportive of a girl in crazy despair, and gentle to the little man who made me laugh all of those years. I've recently been blessed with new babies through a relationship, and recommended switching their vet to Balcones. Just like I thought, my fiance came back with wonderful comments about the vets. He said, ""we'll be taking them there from now on"". Pros: They listen, care, are knowledgeable and they won't rob you blind! more

I would never take my pet anywhere else 12/18/2006

We've been taking our boston terrier to Dr. Woods since 2003. They always find time to squeeze her in and I know that I'll be given options, and not just forced into the most expensive treatment. They are always affordable even without the coupons other clinics send you in the mail. Because of my satisfaction with Balcones Animal Hospital, I have referred my mom there for her cat and one of my best friends there for her two min pins. Pros: caring staff Cons: doesnt see turtles so I have to take him to another vet more

Great service for dogs and people. 11/17/2006

We chose Dr. Wood on the recommendation of a friend and have had a great experience so far. All the staff (vets and techs) are genuinely caring, kind and gentle toward animals, and really respectful towards their customers too. Their services are affordable, and they'll be honest if you don't really need to buy a product or service (he told us we could actually wait another 6 mos to clean our dog's teeth). Dr. Wood is kind of ""old school"" -- he spends as much time as needed with each customer, and will usually advise you on home remedies as opposed to fancy products. We are new pet owners so we've had a ton of questions ... they've given me a lot of free advice over the phone. Best customer service. One time our dog ate some non-food items out of the trash 30 mins before we were leaving on a road trip ... in a hurry, we stopped by Dr. Wood's office on the way out of town, for a can of prescription high-fiber food, but I didn't have the $2 cash on hand. They just said, ""Don't worry about it, you can just pay us the next time you come in."" These folks make going to the vet a pleasant experience for all. Pros: Honest, knowledgable, great customer service more

Great Vet 8/20/2006

Dr. Wood is great. He has been helping me ship my animal internationally and has made great recommendations for a smooth transfer. Dr Wood is very patient and answered all questions I had about my cat even though I was a new and inexperienced pet owner. I will miss the Balcones Animal Hospital when I move. I definitely recommend Dr. Wood. Pros: Fast and High Quality service, friendly staff, clean more

Awesome Vet!! 8/11/2006

I've taken my puppy there twice. Once just for his checkup and while there Dr. Wood and his techs were very professional but at the same time very personal. He allowed me the time to answer the several questions I had as a new puppy owner. He's also not opposed to doing new things. What I mean by that is the new Titers testing which allows your dog fewer vaccinations throughout their lifetime (yeah, that's good for me). Some vets will NOT go by this new protocol. He has a genuine concern for the health and wellbeing of animals! Being an over protective Mommy, I even took him in to have his ear hair plucked and really I expected a tech to do this. No, to my surprise the vet did and gave me the same treatment knowing I would leave having only spent $10! If you're searching for a great vet in Austin, definetly go with Balcones!!! Pros: No waiting time, friendly staff, priced well more

Great vet clinic 8/11/2006

After having several negative experiences with another vet clinic in my area, I tried Balcones Animal Hospital based on City Search reviews. Wow, very impressive. I thought my dog might need her teeth cleaned but Dr. Wood recommended waiting and said they were in better shape than I thought. He told the truth instead of taking advantage of an opportunity to make money on unnecessary services. They weren't pushy, didn't recommend extra products or services, and were very friendly. I will definitely be back. Pros: Clean, didn't upsell products/services more

The best in Texas - for real 7/28/2006

I have been clients of these guys for years. Today I get home, look through my mail, and see that I have my August 2006 Texas Monthly copy. As I skim through it, I come across the ""Best Veterinary Hospitals in Texas"" list on p. 153. Sure enough, Balcones Animal Hospital was the only Austin vet office listed! Looks like many others agree that I've been going to the right vets all along. Pros: Doctors are highly accessible - always able to talk to me Cons: n/a more

Terrific Vet! 6/28/2006

We have been taking our pets to this vet for several years. One dog is very old, and thus high-maintenance medically but the staff helps us to keep the cost down on his medications as much as possible. The father/son vets are very knowledgeable and you can tell they really care as much as we do about our pet's health. I don't know about the previous comment on getting a dog neutered, but our experiences with getting our dogs and cats fixed there was very good. The preventative and follow-up care is terrific, and the costs are low. Pros: Location, Cleanliness, Service Cons: Sometimes one of the receptionists is not very friendly more

Great bedside manner AND knowledgable! 3/2/2006

The staff at Balcones was great with my dog. The vets are extremely thorough in their explanations. They are fantastic and educated me about PREVENTATIVE care so that I won't have to visit them too often!!! Also, the office was clean and neat which prevented my dog from getting too distracted by all the smells of dog hair, dirt, etc! Pros: bedside manner, thorough, clean more

Very insightful, compassionate vets 9/16/2005

Have been to many vets in my time and these folks are the best hands down. Never any worry when I leave my pets with them. They do an extremely thorough job with a cost conscious attitude. Will stay with this clinic from here on out. Pros: thorough, cost conscious, delightful staff more

HORRIBLE SURGICAL EXPERIENCE 7/5/2005

New to town I took our 7 month old Lab into be neutered. Neither before nor after the surgery did I see either of the vetrinarians. Having just adopted this dog from someone who was mistreating it I also wanted them to check him out and verify shot records but was just brushed off and given little recognition that I even knew what I was asking about. I have another dog and a cat and was looking for a vet for all three of them. I'm even hesitant to take him back to have his stiches removed and am instead searching for a different vet. Cons: insensitive, indifferent, lack of attention more

THE BEST VETS IN TOWN!! 12/16/2004

Father and son veterinarians (Dr. James Wood and Dr. Jason Wood). Both are very approachable, compassionate, and really care about my pets. They also don't gouge you for all you're worth either. When my cat was sick, Dr. Jason Wood gave me his home phone number to call anytime after hours in case I had a problem at home. I would drive 200 miles to see these guys. A++++ Pros: Very approachable, Compassionate, Reasonably priced more

Great place! 7/28/2003

I've used them for over 10 years. They are very friendly and helpful. Dr. Wood explains why something is happening with the animal. I wouldn't even consider changing vets. Pros: Inexpensive, friendly, convenient location more
