Editorial review from Citysearch 11/13/2013

I love this Animal Hospital and their staff. They are very kind and caring, they genuinely care about your pets. I have two Boston Terriers that mean the world to me - this is where I take them for care. I have seen both Dr. Woods Sr. and Dr. Woods Jr., we like them both. It is great to have two qualified Veterinarian's in the same office to refer to. They have done excellent work on both my animals and we trust them completely. They do the routine yearly check ups with shots and have done several surgeries on our animals with excellent results. We called one time concerned about some sutures after a surgery - although they were very busy, they asked me to bring my dog right over to check it out. They made time for us and they made sure our pet was OK. I sincerely appreciated their treatment of our animals and the time they take to explain any questions we had. Yes, they are busy but that's because they are that great. They are available to us if we have an emergency and have on several occasions got us in immediately. Their staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. We call and Gail can often just tell us what to do, always with her kind experienced voice!!! What a Gem! The techs are all very nice too. Showed me tricks for cutting nails and giving pills...Love them. Can Not say enough about the wonderful place! more

BEST EVER! 5/6/2012

Dr. Wood helped us through two emotional decisions concerning our dog. When our dog had a disease that could not be cured, he was empathetic and kind. His staff knew our dog and my kids and treated us like family. We have continued to go to Dr. Wood because of the high quality care and personalized treatment. My husband grew up working for a vet, so he knows what to look for. We had not look no further when we found Balcones Animal Hospital. They take great care of your pet over the weekends too. We have referred many friends to Dr. Wood and all have been pleased with his service and care. more

Austin Best Veterinarian 4/6/2012

My Boxer dog had a little accident last night and needed stitches. Went to another vet (24 hours) and they tried to make me pay $650 for cleaning and stitching my dog... they also had to put her to sleep AND keep her overnight. I refused so they came back with another quote to clean and drugs (pain and antibiotics)... 150$. Just cleaning! no stitches! I brought her back home call my regular vet (Balcones Animal Hospital) on their emergency line. They asked me many questions and told me to wait until the morning and be there early. I went... 30 minutes later I was out of there... My dog was cleaned, stitched with antibiotics for $117. No putting to sleep... no keeping for the day. She is next to me... happy and sleeping. in 10 days will go back to remove the stitches. I love this VET. Older gentlemen that has been around and know how to deal with animals. My Boxer love them! Staffs are friendly and all of them loves animals. more

Wonderful Vet 1/23/2012

I have been taking my dogs to Dr. James Woods since 1976 and he has always been a caring wonderful vet. He especially is great at dealing with end of life issues and his compassion makes difficult decisions about beloved dogs easier. I took in a new rescue dog yesterday and he assessed her health and told me he appreciated that I had saved her. I have also seen his son Dr. Jason Woods and he is just as wonderful as his father. If you are looking for quality vet services at a reasonable price try Balcones Animal Hospital. more

Best Vet Ever 11/9/2011

Read such great reviews for Balcones Animal Hospital that I decided to try it today. Took all 3 of my dogs just for a general checkup. One of them had an ear infection. They were very personable, gave me lots of general information for keeping my pets healthy and affordable, and really loved on my pets too. Best of all, the cost was so low I couldn't believe it. They charged me what I would have expected to be the amount for 1 dog for all 3 dogs and most vets charge even more than that. Definitely recommend them. I had no problem getting an appt. and when I went there was only 1 other dog there. Highly recommend them. more

Wonderful Vet 9/26/2011

We have taken our four-legged children to Dr. Wood for years. Everything from surgery (minor routine spays to major surgery for bladder stones) to check-ups and shots, to frantic sick animal calls.I know a lot of reviews mention not being able to get an appointment. I just now called and was offered either a tomorrow or the next day morning appointment. Yes, there have been times when they have been incredibly busy. Just like any other medical provider. But they do their best, and they truly care about both the pets, and their owners. I have never in my life met a more compassionate vet. (Either of them). They take the best care of all our family's cats, dogs, and rats. (Unfortunately, they do not do birds! I wish they did!) more

Excellent Vet! 4/14/2011

Dr Wood has been amazing. After having to take my cat to a specialist, I ended up coming back to Dr. Wood so that he could explain the diagnosis in terms I could fully understand, and he has done so, without the extra charges the specialist wanted. He cares both about our pets and us as pet owners. Also, I think the staff has been just great and don't understand some of these reviews. I have always experienced prompt courteous service on appointments and they have excellent vet techs as well. Highly recommended!!! more

I like these people 3/19/2011

Finally, through a referral, I found the vet I've been looking for. I have been driving out of town, over 2 hrs each way, to take my pets to someone I trust. My pets are very dear to me, to say the least, and I have had a terrible experience with The Cat Hospital on Pond Springs Rd who refused me help and thereby crippled my cat. They didn't know what to do and even though another vet told them what to do they charged me $200. You won't have any problems with Balcones vets. They are truly wonderful people and they won't break the bank for you. more

Great Vets who care alot! 3/6/2011

I have read the previous reviews and can't believe some of them. I've been going to Dr. Woods for over twenty five years on and off (I've moved, but I always make the drive for anything other than routine visits, which I do with Dr. Graef in Taylor, also a great vet, but doesn't have all the equipment needed for some situations) Dr. Woods has always been so caring while being truthful and informative, explaining all the options for my elderly dogs, Don't believe the previous review about waiting two weeks. I've called many times for a semi serious situation and they've always fit me in within a day or two at the most, and of course if there's an emergency (I've had two snake bitten dogs) you're right in the door with either Dr. Woods or his son. Dr. Woods worked on my beloved Bonnie for two hours trying to save her life after being snake bitten. I can't say enough about my good experiences over the years with Dr. Woods and his son, Dr. Woods more recently. I know the reception staff is busy and can be businesslike at times, (friendlier lately, I must say) but overall, I would rate the whole team as A+. Price is only one consideration, you want to trust your vet with your pet's life and I trust these people immensely. more

Not necessarily worth the wait... 1/31/2011

Unfortunately, this business has been hurt by it's success. It usually takes days or weeks to get an appointment. There are many other vets in the area who can fit you in the same day if you have a concern about your pet. We've been to Anderson Mill Animal Clinic and Research Pet and Bird Hospital and have been happier with them. more

Cheap but poor quality vet service. 12/9/2010

The fees is definitely the cheapest. However, it takes about two weeks to get an appointment. So you can only rely on them for regular checkup. Don't wait that long to take your sick pet to the vet! They don't have a patient file system. All they put the patient's ""information"" on note cards. They can't never seem to find the right note card every time I went there and depends on me for H & P (history and physical). Last time we took a very sick cat there and he suggested to put her on a renal diet. I was very suspicious of the ""little treatment."" I took the cat to a cat specialist. It turned out my cat was about to have renal failure and was severe dehydrated. My cat ended up in the cat hospital for 3 days to receive IV hydration, vitamins and monitoring. It may cost more but I need a vet that can remember my cat's and dog's name and their medical history. They should not depend on me as the only source for all their medical history because they can't find the file all the time. more

Understanding 12/1/2010

Knowing how expensive a trip to the Vet can be, I was apprehensive about calling to discuss my dog's condition. I just wanted to discuss possibilities for the condition and possibly avoid the trip to the Vet but I figured I would hear ""you will have to bring the dog in to be examined"". That isn't what I heard. The person who answered the phone took the time to listen to my dog's symptoms and the fact that he had the symptoms before. At no time did she say I had to bring him in. She even said I could try the antibiotics and cortizone treatments I had used the last time. This Vet has seen my dog before but only for annual exams. It was very pleasant to talk with someone who respected the knowledge that I had about my dog's symptoms and that we could discuss options. It is nice to hear that if I think it's allergies like it was the last time that I can just go ahead and give him his meds from last time even though they didn't see him for that or prescribe the meds. And on the other hand it's nice to hear that there were other options, to bring him in and get a shot to ""jump start"" the treatment. I just want my dog to be comfortable so after a wonderful conversation with this woman, I opted to bring my dog in for an exam and based on the exam hopefully get a quicker start to treatment. I was so pleased last year with the Vet and the Vet Tech when I brought him in for his annual exam and now I am even more pleased. And the fees are so reasonable. more

3 Amazing Years of Service to My 2 Vizslas 11/13/2010

This week Dr. Woods and his staff saved the life of my dog Ike who had pancreatitis. We are so relieved and feel very blessed that we found this practice. I have been here over 10 times and never left feeling that I had been overcharged or under treated. The staff is very hard working and they make an effort to make their services affordable which is not the case in Austin proper. Dr. Woods is so generous with his time that you feel guilty. I do not think the general public understands the stress that technicians and staff are under at Animal Hospitals and I learned that when the staff here had to help me in 2009 with the death of my dog Otis. The veterinary business is very hard on receptionists and techs I recommend that people show them the same respect that they are expecting because you do not know what pet traumas and grieving pet owners they have had to deal with before you. Friends and family who have followed me here are super happy. Thank you guys. Patrick more

Very costly result... 10/18/2010

Brought my cat for allergies and he was given a steroid shot... all very reasonable. Cat had a reaction 2 weeks later which I understand now can sometimes happen with cats. Obviously there was no way this could have been known. However, they should have caught this when I brought him back. They then proceeded to over hydrate him and sent him home with me when he was breathing much too hard but of course, I assumed he was ok as they sent him home with me. The next day he went into congestive heart failure and I spent $$$$ at the emergency vet, with another vet (because I was not going to bring him back to this vet!!) and a cardiologist. He's fine now but no thanks to this vet. Yes, they're more reasonable in the pricing but at what cost???? more

Don't take your beloved pets to this place 8/20/2010

I was so disapointed with this vet hospital. i have been taking my Dog there for a couple of times, but the last time was my final time. It was so over booked there that they gave my Dog his shots in the waiting room, I was so pissed offf because I wasnt even able to see the vet the last two timesI was there because they over booked so bad. The girls in the front are rude and look like they have pulled an all nighter. Then the final straw was whenI asked them to fax my Dogs paper work to my new Vet. They totally lost all of his files!! who does that? more

rude receptionist 7/19/2010

called to get my dog a shot and bordatella for the weekend, and the receptionist basically told me that they were absolutely full and pretty much dismissed me altogether. I have read the other reviews, I can't even believe that girl still has a job. Pros: non Cons: rude receptionist more

Rude Receptionist but great Vet and Vet techs! 5/3/2010

I had to bring in my dog on short notice and when I entered the clinic I wasn't greeted I walked up to the front desk and the young receptionist there spoke to me in a very rude manner like I wasn't supposed to be there. I didn't feel welcome at all. I'm shocked she is able to provide terrible customer service and is still allowed to work there. I know if I spoke to customer's at my job in that way I wouldn't have a job anymore. On the other side you have the very friendly and knowledgeable vet and vet techs that make this place awesome. : ) So 5 starts for them and 0 for the receptionist. Pros: Awesome Vet and Vet techs Cons: Rude Receptionist more

Horrible Receptionist 4/14/2010

I work for a veterinary company & had to make a phone call to this clinic for some information on one of their patients. First of all, the receptionist, Laura, answered the phone without even stating who she was (I had to ask her what her name was), how she could help etc. She answered it like I was putting her out by even calling their clinic (great first impression). She was extremely short, extremely rude & not one bit concerned about how she might be able to help. I speak to veterinary clinics for a good part of my day & having also worked at one for years as both a receptionist & a technician, I know how important it is to have good phone manners & how essential it is when getting new clients and keeping old ones. If I was a potential client calling around for information I can tell you without a doubt I wouldnt step foot in this clinic because of the first impression I recieved fromt this receptionist. This is extremely unpfrofessional and I hope she works on her attitude because it is definetly not an asset to this clinic. more
