FRAUDULANT 12/23/2011

My dog was referred for an MRI by her vet. He had already taken x-rays and was undecided if it was a tumor or hip dysplasia. He wanted an MRI to direct course of treatment. After waiting 4 hours they didnt do an MRI-had some specialist come in and say she didn't need one. Out apt(on my cell phone message "confimining your apt for MRI tommorow) was for MRI not consult. They charged us some kind of specialty consult fee-we are fighting it with our credit card and i am prepared to go beyond that on principle. We had to go to another hopsital and get the MRI for what was infact a large tumor and we are treating accordingly. save your yourself $ and headache . Go directly to Vetrinary Specialty Hopsital in Buffalo Grove. more

Your wishes regarding treatment don't matter 4/19/2011

I wish to share our poor experience with our dog's cancer treatments at VCA Aurora. Although we are not vets, my husband and I are both physicians and I have spent three months doing hematology/oncology at the foremost medical center in the Midwest so we are not without some knowledge of how these drugs work and their side effects. When our dog was first diagnosed with a malignancy in mid-January we were told that her prognosis was about 3-6 months. Chemotherapy was begun close to our home. At our first VCA visit one week later she was found to have a low white blood cell count secondary to the chemo and was given additional medication. At that time I mentioned to the veterinarian in charge of her care that my husband and I were aware of her grave prognosis and wanted her last days to be of the best possible quality and we did not want the dog to suffer from the effects of chemotherapy. At her second visit she was given a reduced dose of chemotherapy. After that dose of chemo she did h more

VCA refuses to give dog meds 3/14/2011

Don't trust them when it comes to "finances."VCA doesn't keep their word! Recently, we brought our older dog in for emergency care. We learned she has kidney failure, but was told she didn't need to be put down. Our bill was extremely high. They agreed to receive half down and allow us to make three monthly payments beginning on March 25, 2011. Today is March 13, 2011. Tonight, I needed to go to VCA to get another bag of fluids for her subcutaneous home treatment. We purchase this weekly from them and have done so paying for the bag on the spot. Tonight was different for some reason. The gal at the desk said the office manage had placed a note on the computer stating that no services could be rendered until payment was received. I was agreeing to pay for this service. Still the girl refused. I explained the danger (life-threatening) situation to her. I told her my dog was in stage 3 kidney failure and needed the fluids. Everyday makes a difference. If my dog dies because t more

Horrible. 1/18/2011

One evening my dog started showing symptoms of a fever with chills and lathargy. I took him to VCA for the first time. I had to wait in the waiting room for approximately 1.5 hours which I somewhat expected considering it is an emergency hospital. However, I was charged from the moment I walked in the door. So they ended up charging me to sit in the waiting room with my dog while we waited for a Dr. I of course fought this charge. Once we were finally in a room and they did an exam they basically gave me every possibility of illness under the sun. They recommended he stay overnight and run tests in the morning. I made the decision to do so knowing how much it was going to cost. They told me more than likely my vet would recommend we come back there for tests. Big mistake. \r Before we would even receive results from one test they would suggest ordering another one. After staying there for a weekend they called Monday, again while we were still waiting on test results, and suggested a bo more

Watch Out 1/18/2011

Make sure you bring along at least $4.99 because that's what they charge for cleaning the room after an exam...LOLOLOL! That right there should tell what they're most interested in. \r \r Unfortunately, it seems that all of the vet specialists are owned by corporations, at least in Illinois. So, when your pet is critically ill and needs a specialist, the corporations have us animal lovers right where they want us. So, if you're unfortunate enough to end up here even though you feel desperate and upset by what's going on with your pet, please try to pay attention to all the tests they want to run and ask exactly why they want to run them.\r \r I took my dog here and was offered a glimmer of hope. But, within 24 hours, I was advised to put her down. From when I walked in the doors to see the specialist until we put her down, she had an exam, an ultrasound, some blood tests and an overnight stay in ICU. Total bill: $2100.00. And there were several tests they wanted to run..all of whic more

Would not recommend this place! Plenty of other places to take your pet that will actually care for your pet. Waste of time & definitel waste of money! more

The most horrible experience I have ever had in 40 years of care for my feline boys. Would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Please save yourself the heartache and your pet the pain and terror. more

Saved My Dog's Life! 10/5/2010

I haven't taken my dog to VCA for regular treatment, but I have been there in an emergency and let me just say, "FANTASTIC!" We had been there on a few weekends for various things and were annoyed that it was literally $100 just to see a doctor in an emergency. But when my dog got a solid red rubber ball stuck in his throat early on a Sunday morning, these people SAVED HIS LIFE. His tongue and gums were turning blue by the time we got there. They did everything they could not to cut him open for surgery and just as they went in for a tracheotomy, a vet tech was able to dislodge the ball. They stabilized him and told me that they had to sew him up a bit since the throat cut had already been made and that they wanted to keep him overnight because there was a lot of stress on his heart and body. They also needed to rehydrate him. They asked for a deposit for the processes and the overnight stay. I shelled out the $900 and expected to pay another $900 when I went back the next day to pick more

Broken hearted 8/11/2010

If you value your pet please DO NOT take them to this establishment. It is understandably a business, however the underlying theme is not one of love of animals and their owners. Rather the underlying theme here is the love of money. RUN, do not walk to another facility so that they do not have the opportunity to break your heart. more

Non-existent Cat Care 8/8/2010

Our older cat had what looked like a serious bowel obstruction, so we called VCA and asked after it. The lady told us to hurry in. So we did. And waited. And waited. The ladies behind the desk were very nice, but we were otherwise completely ignored. Our poor cat had to wait over an hour, When we finally asked how long it would be, were told another half an hour minimum.\r \r Now tell me, is it or is it not cruel to make an animal wait around for an hour and a half, with his bowels obstructed?? He could be risking infection, and he is in pain, but we can't get him treated in a timely manner. The doctors need to learn what triage actually means. more

Very Unhappy customer 7/27/2010

This place is a money pit. I agree with a lot of these other people. The first time I brought my cat in she needed some blood work done and that was $450 plus medicine which they didnt even know what she had they were just guessing. She was getting worse so I brought her back in gave me a way lower dose of the medicine,an iv cuz she was getting dehydrated and food to force feed her cuz she wasnt eatting anymore after I put her on the meds. she had a seizure so I brought her in through emergency. ( now this is all in the same week) nurse came in said the doc wanted her on a cathiter just incase she seized I oked it doc first off came in and asked where she was, then told me she wanted to keep her over night just incase she siezed again and to see the neurologist just to see if she needs an MRI. She wasnt even healthy enough to have an MRI and I didnt know how much longer I had with her so I told her no. from there the visit was over. She didnt answer any questions i had, didnt give me an more

Protect Your Wallet 5/28/2010

This place, likee many other corporate owned practices, is a total money pit, charging you for every little thing - I swear if my dog took an extras breath I was charged. As I rescue, I have seen many, many different vets and specialists over the last 15 years and can speak to pricing very well. This place is nuts! the care my dog received was good and my vet wanted me to see the particular specialist that worked at VCA. But I know, with complete certainty, I could have gone to one ofthe other specialists in the area and spent less with the same level of care. I would go to Veterinary Specialty clinic/Surgical Referall in Buffalo Grove first, or Northbrook Critical Care, or even Arboretum View (very pricey though) before I ever came back here. They only get stars b/c the doc was actually good. HOping he leaves and opens his own practice. And btw - after going to another VCA in the area for basic care, I think they all suck. more

Horrible Place! 5/9/2010

I had a horrible experience with the VCA Aurora Animal Hospital. I had a dying animal that they refused to help without payment, which resulted in the animal dying a 12 hour painful death. This place is very cruel and I would not recommend it to anyone. more

Found a New Vet! 4/19/2010

I was new to the area and suddenly in need of a vet. A friend told me about VCA. I found it easily and walked in without an appointment. After checking me in, four different doctors or nurses approached me to make sure we were not an emergency situation. It was serious, but not an emergency. \r \r After a short wait, we were taken back to a clean and quiet room. The doctor was thorough and very knowledgeable. She actually took the time to explain possible causes and solutions. \r \r I found validating information on the Internet that night and again, impressed at the doctors knowledge. I feel like my pet got the best possible care at the VCA and will definitely be back! more

Needless expense/poor clinical skills 1/28/2010

I had two experience with this hospital. The first was over a year ago with my whippet. My regular vet heard a slight heart murmur and recommended we see a cardiologist at VCR. We took him there, and they did a cardiac workup which was what my vet recommended. It turned out that the murmur was so small that no medication was necessary. Although VCR did what my regular vet asked, and I agreed, I think the cardiologist could have taken a few moments to do better clinical diagnises to see if we REALLY needed to spend over $1,000 to diagnose what turned out to be a very minor problem that didn't require medication. It seems that not even specialists can do basic clinal examinations any more! I wonder why this is? This esperience fits the profile that VCA is, indeed, a money pit.\r My second visit confirmed this. Over a weekend my saluki showed some signs of mild lethargy; we took him to VCA and two vets recommended we hospitalize the dog in ICU. He also had a very low grade fever. We ha more

VCA aurora animal hospital illinois 1/19/2010

My dog was having horrible seizues and had to stay at vca for 3 days. Dr. Sander was the emergency vet that took care of him. I was extremely impressed with him and the staff. He took great care of my Buster brown! I felt comfortable leaving him there and I left very confident in Dr. Sander. I was a wreck before we went there and they helped save his life. Also the cost was less than expected. I highly reccomend them. Thank you VCA Aurora and staff! more

VCA Aurora Animal Hospital is money pit 10/8/2009

It was a long day for us at this vet hospital. I was astounded that they did not have proper tables to bring dogs in or out of their place. They used a coaster wagon. This was a referral vet as our dog has trouble walking. Besides the doctor, interns were surrounding my dog which made him feel better. After a thorough examination, several recommendations were made to us listing from 1-5, severe being 1. The doctor began talking about taking care of the least possible scenarios first...I kept asking why were not taking care of the main problem. The answer was that we had to rule out everything else first. A estimate was brought in by an aid, the first estimate was the areas to complete that day. As we were referred to this office, all of our dogs files were transferred over. The doctor knew this and we discussed the fact that a x ray and ultrasound was done the week before. (His belly was still shaved). Yet, on the estimate (your supposed to understand everything, which because we have more

Quality Care for Pet, Piece of Mind for Owner 6/3/2009

I brought my 12 year old dog here upon recommendation of my regular vet, who felt he could not give him the care he needed. This is an amazing place- not only did they take my very sick dog in immediately, the vet had asked for my regular vet to fax over files so he could begin to study my dog's case before we even got there. They were able to run comprehensive tests within an hour, without having to put my dog under or causing him any more stress. They were patient and thorough in explaining treatment options and even presented me with an "estimate" of what this care would cost so I could make a rational decision.\r \r I had a second dog critically ill in the same year and brought her to the VCA as well. Again, the care she was given was first rate. I have never seen so much competency and heart in such a large team. \r \r My dogs spent a total of 14 days at this facility. If they couldn't heal them here, they couldn't heal them anywhere! more

Wonderful facility and doctors 5/22/2009

VCA Aurora is a great hospital for whatever I need for my pet. They have many specialists, so any time something comes up, I am directed to the best doctor to help me with my pets' problems. Dr. Peacock is a great surgeon and provided my pet with excellent care. Dr. Looper is a wonderful veterinarian that has only her patients best interest in mind when she recommends and performs treatments. This hospital is the best in the area. more

Great Radiation Oncology 1/16/2009

My 12 year old dog suddenly went blind and was diagnosed with a brain tumor through an MRI and cerbrospinal fluid analysis (to rule out infection) at another animal hospital (Animal Emergency & Referral Center which is a FABULOUS facility with great specialists) and I was referred to Dr. Looper by the neurologist that diagnosed him. Dr. Looper carefully reviewed the MRI and examined my dog then laid out my options (treatment and no treatment) and the pros and cons of the types of radiation and the no treatment option. I decided to treat as fully as we could and my dog is doing wonderfully already -- he has his vision back and has more energy. Dr. Looper and her staff of technicians are wonderful to work with, kind to my dog and willing to answer any questions we have. They have been wonderful to work with in this very difficult time. more
