Food Poisoning 7/13/2010

I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. I've working in the restaurant biz for many years and know it can be a difficult job. Our waiter was not very familiar with the menu. Service was slooooowww and the place was barely half full. The meal I ordered was best described as ""meh"". Not good, not horrible but bad enough to put me in the emergency room with food poisoning. When I called to let the manager know, she basically disregarded me saying I had an 'upset stomach'. Um, NO. I don't think so sister. It would have behooved them to at least act concerned but I guess not. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! Cons: Slow service, mediocre food, end up in emergency room more

Typhoon Restaraunt, Gresham, Oregon 7/9/2010

Ate there in may for dinner. Very good Pad Thai. Tom Kah Ga soup was missing main ingredient of onions. Rectified. Had to wait quite some time for a server to come and help us . Bartender took our original order, but he was busy mixing drinks at the bar while we we were parched. Came back this month and got a:"" To go"" order of Tofu Pad Thai. No eating utensils, forgot my 2 peanut sauces. Got home, and no lime included in box. Noodles were old, cool and clumped together. Tofu were tiny diced cubes of white tofu tossed onto the top of one corner of the noodles! Not stir fried in. Got the end of the night food? Called and left a mssg for the Manager as no one was available to pick up their phone. 2 weeks went by. NO ONE returned my call. I got him when i called back last week. He was pleasant . Acknowledged he got my mssg. But never apologized for not calling me back. Said to come in and he would replace it. Thought if i ate there again , it would be better. The Vegetable Pad Thai chicken with tofu was over powering . You could smell strong fish sauce before you ate it. I am not a fan of fish sauce. The stir fried Cabbage? Was dirty with black dirt in it, no one washed it off before cooking with it. Other pieces were brown from aging.(waste). I pushed it aside. I could not eat it. When yet another wait person came by i showed it to him and he agreed it was not OK to serve it and said we will get you another one. I was ready to leave. He offered to pack the Tom Ka Ga soup to go. I ordered a large bowl for me and another family member. I got it home, family member dug in, and was so upset because he got a mouthful , a fistful of light brown hair in his soup. He was so disgusted we tossed it. I received an email from the co and replied about this last poor food quality control in the kitchen. No response. Today, i called the rest and spoke to the manager AGAIN. He said he had forwarded my comments to the headquarters. He was not happy with me. I asked if he would replace one bowl of soup for my family member, and he said do NOT order from anyone else here. They do not know how to take orders. You can only order from me when i am there . He made me feel like i was the problem. How is poor quality veggies and hair in the plastic to go container our fault? That hair was NOT in the soup when i sat at the table and drank from the large bowl! Somewhere between the table and kitchen something went wrong. Very wrong. He also insisted that no one in his employ has brown hair. Only black hair. Well we are both blonds. Not my hair either. That is not OK.... Pros: outdoor patio weather permitting.Ambience, great deserts Cons: too many people involved in serving. Bad food handling more

Excellent food... 4/30/2009

The Typhoon is Gresham is the best resturant in town. Don't know what I'd do w/ out them. The veggies are always fresh, and good quality. The curry sauces are unbeatable, every dish is a real treat! The service is always 5 star! The prices are reasonable, so I can go as often as I like. Pros: Fresh food, wonderfully blended flavors! Cons: odd hours? more

Great Place for a 1st Date or 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th... 2/12/2009

Typhoon probably holds the trendiest ambiance in Gresham! It has an urban-asian feel w/ bold colors, artifacts & art, perfect lighting (including candles), and comfy booths. Pros: Ambiance, healthy options, great service Cons: Although they don't serve big portions, I always leave feeling satisfied and feeling good that I ate a healthy meal. more

Sorry Customer Service 12/30/2008

I rarely get riled up enough to rant about a restaurant, but Typhoon pushed me over the edge tonight. I called in a to-go order (bags of gold appetizer and 1 order of yellow curry chicken.) I arrived to pick it up and stood at the counter holding my squirming daughter for a good 10 minutes before anyone even acknowledged my existence. A party of 2 was seated, a party of two placed a to-go order, the hostess was at the counter the ENTIRE time, the manager even came up! I work in customer service myself, and in my opinion, it only takes a minute to say to a waiting customer,""I'll be with you in just a moment."" Finally, it was one of the other patrons that said to the manager,""She is just picking up a to-go order and has been waiting for quite a while."" The manager was perfectly pleasant but didn't offer an apology for my wait. Pros: Awesome Thai food Cons: service lacking, customers are practically invisible more

Great food, bad for takeout 12/28/2008

Great food - not great for takeout. Like the other reviewers, we agreed that the portions were not very generous. In addition, we didn't realize that they didn't include rice until we got home. When we called to inquire, we were told by a very rude man that rice was extra...who doesn't eat Thai food with rice?!? I have eaten at other Typhoons in the past and have had great experiences (including rice), but this will not go on my takeout speed dial! more

This place was GREAT! 10/16/2008

Our first experience at Typhoon and WOW? we loved it! We've heard good things about them from several friends and had finally decided to give it a try. And on our 21st anniversary! Our waiter, Shane took the time to explain their menu and helped us understand their ?star? levels of spicy. We tried the Pumpkin soup as a starter and shared a bowl. Two sips in and I wanted my own bowl? no sharing this one! I went with the Stir Fry, Pepper Corn Sirloin and choose two stars. It was perfectly prepared and a good size portion. I wished I?d of went with three stars but it was plenty spicy and a place to start. My sweetie went for the Cashew Chicken and again a generous portion and quickly served. Being our anniversary, the Manager stopped by with the dessert menu and offered us one. We had a interesting discussion about Typhoon and how our experience was so far? more

Yummy Thai Food in Gresham 7/27/2008

We've eaten at the Gresham & downtown Portland Typhoon locations several times over several years and have never been disappointed. We always share a few starters and a noodle dish as well as pad thai. Their calamari, string beans and nibbler platter are all wonderful. The chefs will cook to order the level of spice you want on your food, so don't hold back if something is listed as very spicy or mild. A couple of other reviewers gave mediocre ratings, I say, call the manager and tell them about your experience and give them another shout. It could be you visited Typhoon on an off day. Try them again, you won't be disappointed. Pros: Consistent, full flavored food, ample portions, reasonably priced, usually little to no waiting, plenty of tables + a full service bar. Cons: Service can be a bit spotty, usually pretty good though. more

Way overpriced. Mediocre food. 4/5/2008

Opened the meal with the ""Nibbler Platter"" to sample the appetizers without breaking the bank. This consisted of two greasy and bland chicken satay skewers next to two lemon grass pork skewers that were completely indistinguishable from the chicken. Also included was a below-average veggie spring roll cut in half that was dripping oil from the fryer. The high points were the fairly tasty ""Bag of Gold"", but these were also saturated in oil. The low points: Kra-thong ton - room temperature flavorless crumbles in a pastry cup, and the fried wontons were just gross - room temperature meat mash in greasy wonton. The sauces were not bad, but not interesting either. Cost for a plate of ""blah"" food: $14.95, not including tip. more

fast service at a Thai restaurant?? 2/18/2008

I absolutely love Thai food, however, I usually find myself inside those little hole in the wall joints where I stick with my familiar Pad Thai...I was a little hesitant to try Typhoon (as it IS a chain restaurant,) but am glad that I did, I have a new favorite!! Pros: Delicious Food, friendly/attentive service Cons: the floor plan of the restaurant is fairly open, a more private atmosphere would be desired! more

The Good Manager's Back! 10/17/2007

I LOVE Thai food, and we used to be pretty much regulars at the Typhoon in Gresham. But I haven't been back for a while, ever since they relocated the EXCELLENT young Asian manager they used to have there. Under him, the standard of service and focus on the customer used to be amazing. Typhoon was the BEST place to eat in Gresham! It was a fun, friendly atmosphere, the food was good, everything was excellent. But after he left, everything just did not seem to be the same. But couple of weeks ago, a friend mentioned that she thought the old manager was back. So, last Friday night, my husband and I decided to give it another try. Pros: the manager Oat, friendly service, Thai flavors! Cons: very busy on Fri, Sat! Make reservations! more

great thai food 10/4/2007

I have been visiting this restaurant for a few years now. The food is outstanding, prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is comfortable. Normally I visit for lunch and have always been impressed with the fact that I can get in and out in a decent amount of time. They used to have a buffet at lunch that was very fast but even without the buffet, I have no problem with my 30 minute lunch hour. The buffet was great as you had a chance to sample things that I would never order. But they have a lunch special that is almost as good as the buffet. more

Better than I deserve 6/30/2007

After 2 years of driving by Typhoon I decided to try them even though I have been a real fan of Thai Orchid. The decor is nice, upscale yet comfortable. The service was better than I expected. Not only was my server attentive but he was also very helpful and assisted in making some decisions based on what I liked. But what really impressed me was that just about all of the employees had something to say to me. The employees seemed to be busy yet they had time to talk to everyone. The food was outstanding. I thought I knew what good Thai food tasted but they have raised the bar for my standards. Pros: the temperature was warm, not enough air conditioning Cons: open kitchen more

Another bad dining experience in Gresham 6/8/2007

What is it about Gresham? This little 'burb seems to get short-changed on everything. My last (and only) dining experience at the Typhoon!Gresham is a perfect example. I have long been a fan of Typhoon! on Broadway and have started many a weekends there enjoying the happy hour. after much raving about Typhoon! I decided to take my co-workers to the Typhoon!Gresham by our office for a quick lunch. I was so embarrassed by the time it was over. The waiter seemed to be medicated and could not even tell us about any specials or even which types of sodas they served. He had to come back to the table 3 times to re-take our orders. The papaya salad was insanely hot at this location - nothing like what I've had at the Broadway Typhoon!. The stir-fry ginger beef was horrible, the meat tough and stringy. The pineapple curry (which I always get at the Broadway location) was drowned in a sub-par curry sauce that was more Jif's peanutbutter than true curry. It was a bad meal from start to finish. This was the first introduction to Thai food for some of the people and I'm sure their last based on the experience. Cons: bad food, over-priced, horrible service more

Well above average lunch spot 4/27/2007

Just came across Typhoon at the Gresham Station. I actually had been told they had a nice buffet but when I was there, none was offered. They did have a nice lunch menu that including salad, soup, rice and phad thai plus a choice of many entrees. More variety and quanity than I usually see at a Asain lunch special menu. The food better than I expected and it seems like a nice friendly place. The price might have been just a bit high but I still thought it was a value. more

No more buffet 4/23/2007

They have discontinued their buffet. Too bad because it was an excellent value and usually offered a broad sample of different tastses and textures. Pros: Good for dinner & drinks Cons: Not worth the price for lunch more

Tasty, fast 5/17/2006

We experienced excellent service--fast and attentive. I had a question about the ingredients of one menu item, and the waiter was able to answer it completely. The drunken noodles were very tasty, but a few bucks more than elsewhere and nothing special for the extra cost. Despite complaints I've read in some reviews, our portion size was large. Maybe that's unique to the Gresham location. The atmosphere was pretty casual and not crowded--we ate around 6:30 and there were only a few occupied tables. The bar was more full. I plan to go back and try the lunch buffet--it should be a good way to sample different menu items and find different things I like. Pros: Not crowded, Good service Cons: Bit overpriced more

Wonderful but not so full. 12/2/2005

My husband and I had a wonderful experience at Typhoon! however the prices were surprisingly high for the amount of food and the environment. For me it was more of a wonderful yet casual dining experience but the prices didn't seem to match. For a lot less I can drive to 82nd and eat at any Thai restaurant for less and the food will be just as tasty. One thing that is unique to this restaurant is the use of more exotic ingredients which is ever so refreshing and pleasing to the sences. The aroma of this dining atmosphere is enough to delight your appetite. I definitely will eat here again yet it wouldn't be as often as my pocket book would like. Pros: Taste, Originality, Variety Cons: Price, Portion size, Open seating more

Great Thai food in Gresham 3/13/2004

The spicy peppercorn sirloin (w/ red curry paste, kaffir lime leaf, hot peppers, and peppercorns) is a standout must have dish - but be forewarned: it'll open your sinuses. The extensive tea menu is a sight to behold. Try a different selection each time for a nice surprise. The deserts are also a pleasant indulgence. It's all good here and the changing list of specials always have flair and flavor. Pros: Food, Tea, Ambiance more
