Great food 5/25/2007

We had a wonderful meal there; the brisket was fantastic as was the local, fresh salad. Soup was hearty and very tasty, and the drinks were fun and delicious. A nice overall NW food experience with a Southern touch.\r \r As for authentic Southern food, I'm no expert, but jiminy-crizzy people, if you want authentic Southern food then go live there. Pros: Very delicious Cons: Corn bread not terribly sweet more

great atmosphere, good food 5/12/2007

Went here for a Saturday morning breakfast and it was pretty excellent. Very creative menu with lots of choices for both vegetarians and meat-eaters. The only down side is that their vegetarian ""country"" gravy was actually mushroom gravy, which was disappointing. I'll definitely be going back and ordering something else, though. Pros: atmosphere, menu Cons: mushroom gravy more

Best burgers in Portland 4/20/2007

The Portland Burger Brigade has given the Screeen Door 2 thumbs up for their backyard burger and fries.\r Don't miss the great brunch on the weekends!\r The owners are always super nice and catering, defininately a great addition to Burnside and the restarant choices in Portland. Pros: yummy, yummy Cons: no childrens menu more

The food is a 9-10 but southern hospitality is definitely lacking on the part of the host/owner. 4/7/2007

I love so much about the Screen Door. The Shrimp and Grits, macaroni and cheese and specials derived from locally grown foods far surpass other southern style food I've had in PDX. The servers are also wonderful and table service is fantastic. \r \r However, the attitude of the host/owner is so consistently unpleasant to deal with, even downright rude on one occasion, that I will not go back again. If you knew how much I loved good southern food, you'd understand what a big deal this is. \r \r it's such a shame, but this man seems to have come to the conclusion that he definitely wants to attract a certain type of older, wealthier patron. There's certainly nothing wrong with having a target audience, but rudeness to any polite, paying customer is, in my opinion, inexcusable. Pros: The excellent food and gracious servers Cons: The host/owner's attitude is awful, can be noisy at times, can be a long wait more

Finally! Southern food that tastes like home. 3/22/2007

I moved to Portland from South Carolina almost 5 years ago, and I have been in search of a place that does southern food right. This food was so, so right. First off, the service was excellent. Our server, Eric, is a recent transplant from New Orleans and had some great recommendations. The food was just as I wanted it. I had the shrimp and grits, which were to die for: perfectly spiced, buttery, rich, and flavorful. My friend had collards (with pork and ham hocks), sweet potato fries (which practically melted in your mouth), and cornbread. The cornbread deserves special mention because they make it the way it's supposed to be made: moist and slightly salty. If you're from the south, you know that cornbread isn't meant to taste like cake - it's made with buttermilk and butter and it's crispy and salty. They did that perfectly well. And finally - the pecan pie with whipped cream is just right: not too sweet, just gooey enough, all wrapped up in a perfect fluffy pastry. I can't wait to go back and try the fried chicken. Pros: shrimp and grits, cornbread, pecan pie, service Cons: none that I can see more

Good times! 3/15/2007

Since I first discovered this place a month ago, Ive been there 4 times.\r \r Breakfast/brunch is very very noisy and crowded, but the food will rock you and the service is sweet. For breakfast, the Sardou and also the Bacon Praline Waffle rock!\r \r Dinner seemed like a calmer, quiter time to go. The food was awesome. I loved some of the seasonal side dishes they offered. It wasn't cheap, but then again I was looking for a change of pace from the Delta... Oh, and the mixed drinks are tasty\r \r Go check it out, but consider going more thatn once as there are many different dishes to sample and different experiences to be had (ie frenetic but delicious brunch, gentle gourmet southern dinner) Pros: delicious food, helpful staff. great variety on the menu Cons: it is soooo loud during brunch, no lunch :) more

Not Impressed 3/13/2007

My co-worker loves this place & she usually is right on with her recommendations, but this time she was wrong. My companion & had an avarage at best cheese burger. The shrimp in the grits & shrimp were excellent, however the grits were terrible. My dad is from Georgia so I know good grits & these were not. Our salad was good but hard hard is it to mess up a salad? The service was good but not great. That's my story & I'm sticking to it! Pros: Salad Cons: Everything else more

authentic New Orleans hospitality 3/11/2007

best southern brunch in portland, hands down! you can tell the owners of Screen Door are real New Orleanians, they are super friendly, the cheese grits are the best, the bloody mary's are strong and the music is straight from Tipitinas. The perfect place to drink a ramos fizz with your fried green tomatoes on a lazy sunday. The service was excellent and much more prompt than most Portland restaraunts. You will want to eat every single thing on the menu. Plan to share with friends so you can try all the southern goodness. more

Terrific weekend brunch 2/21/2007

After only two visits for brunch, Screen Door has shot up high on my list of places I regularly frequent for breakfast on the weekends. I like the ""out-of-the-ordinary,"" and there are plenty of things here not offered at many (or any) other restaurants. On my first time in, a special was crispy strips of chicken breast served over a sweet potato waffle with maple syrup. The chicken was indeed crispy and had a slight ""bite"" in the light batter. The waffle was lovely. I felt as if I had had both breakfast and lunch with this choice. (Well, it is called ""brunch""!) I felt in such a good mood afterward that I enjoyed a spicy rum hot apple cider drink for ""dessert."" The next time, I went for the bowl of grits baked with a thin slice of delicious ham and topped with provolone cheese and two nicely poached eggs. Another greatly pleasing breakfast. On both occasions, the waitresses were sweet, charming, witty, and efficient. Listening to their enthusiastic recommendations for newcomers is quite delightful. Attention is paid to coffee cups -- a big item on my ""what matters"" list. Pros: Wonderful, friendly servers Cons: Gets noisy when busy more

A good RC 2/12/2007

For Southern cooking in Portland, there's Roux and Bernie's Southern Bistro. Depending on your desire for flavor (Roux) or tradition (Bernie's), you?re guaranteed to side with one over the other. Consider them our version of Coke or Pepsi.\r \r But when you are tired of the front runners, you can always embrace RC. It's less expensive, more casual, and more adventurous. The Screen Door plate for 12.95 had my head spinning with delicious choices. But, I was still happy to have my fork tender pork served in bourbon sauce, whipped root vegetables, accompanied with slices of baked apples for 14.95. Our Dinner 10 group had a smattering of comments that ranged from ""great soup"" to ""disappointing sweet potato french fries."" All agreed that this was a good neighborhood restaurant, a solid third for Southern cooking in Portland. more

My New Favorite Alternative to Flying Home to Alabama 2/2/2007

Wow! This place is awesome! Once I got over the pain of paying too much for Southern basics (what my family always called 'poor country food') I fell in love with the place. The sweet tea is awesome and very accurate. The shrimp and grits were perfect and the cornbread (though it doesn't seem to be cooked in a cast iron skillet) was very moist and NOT sweet. Yay! I actually paid money for banana pudding, don't tell my Grandmother! Pros: Tasty accurate food Cons: a bit spendy more

Best Breakfast Ever 1/31/2007

Screen Door is what every Portland restaurant should emulate. Great service AND delicious food (Portland lacks the former but excels in the latter). I've only been there for breakfast, but the creativity on that menu alone is a very pleasant suprise. Best breakfast in town, where breakfast really means something! Welcome to town, Screen Door. more

finger licking good fried chicken 1/29/2007

Except you don't actually have to lick your fingers because this fried chicken isn't greasy! It's crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. My husband says the fried oysters are some of the best he's had in a long time. And my 6 year old daughter has fallen in love with their mashed sweet potatoes. The week-end breakfast is good too. So far there aren't any long waits, which is a real plus in Portland. The staff is very friendly. And even though it's a kid friendly place, the kids aren't encouraged to run around and bother other people! Check it out. Pros: friendly wait staff more

Recommended, but can get a little pricey for dinner... 1/27/2007

I have dined here twice for dinner and at least three times for brunch. The service is generally decent. The place is hot right now, and they can get get fairly busy- so I understand if the servers aren't able to tend to my needs as often as they may like. I can't recall being dissatisfied with brunch. To be honest, I've only ordered their poached eggs, but every time they've been fresh and perfectly prepared. My girlfriend raves about the lemon pancakes and cheesy grits. \r \r As for dinner- the appetizers I've had were excellent. The peaches wrapped in bacon were to die for, the pimento cheese was slightly creamy with an amazing, slightly spicey undertone, and the sauce served with the fried green tomatos was wonderful. The only entree I can recall was a petrole sole special- which was good, by all means- but it didn't knock my socks off. A friend of mine raved about their burger, and his girlfriend, a very discerning vegetarian, was very pleased with the options on the menu. \r \r We'll be back. Pros: Nice ambience Cons: They don't take reservations for parties under six more

Superb, Fresh Food and Superior Staff 1/19/2007

Ahh, redemption! We visited this restaurant for the first time on a Sunday night; but not just any Sunday night. This particular weekend we spent Friday night happy hour at a very disappointing place and left another restaurant for lunch that same weekend after waiting over 45 minutes for a salad (with only two other tables in the place occupied) and extremely uninterested and uncaring staff. Needless to say, expectations were not at their highest. Fortunately for us, however, Screen Door turned out to serve us one of my favorite meals in Portland ever, and at a reasonable price to boot! The menu is great. ""Southern"" cooking, yes; but varied enough to have something for everyone. The waiter may have been the most knowledgeable server I have had in years - without being pompous or pushy. I had the Jambalaya special, and my boyfriend had pulled pork. I never order barbecue (which is why I didn't) because I have very specific likes/dislikes when it comes to barbecue sauce. I took a little bite of my boyfriend's sandwich and I was actually extremely, unapologetically jealous! Not that my entree was not fabulous - it was - I just could not believe the quality of the barbecue. We received our food within 10 or 15 minutes of ordering. It was hot, juicy and oh so delicious. Just reminiscing about it now, I am salivating... We will go back - and very, very soon, I am sure. Pros: Amazing Food; Upscale (yet casual) Atmosphere; Exceptional Staff Cons: Not open for lunch weekdays; pricey drinks more

Great brunch, wonderful service 12/30/2006

I've only been there one time for brunch, but it's probably my favorite brunch in Portland, based on that experience. It was full, but we were seated immediately (on a Saturday slightly after noon!) and the staff couldn't have been nicer. The fare seemed legitimately down-home, but in the highest quality way. My wife had the cheesy grits with eggs and ham, which was very tasty -- I kept sneaking bites even after I'd finished off my filling bananas Foster French toast, which was also good. The atmosphere was definitely hip, but not intimidatingly so. My friends have raved so much about dinner there that we're sure to go back for that. more

bland fried chicken 12/7/2006

maybe we visited this restaurant too early in it's developement. we went soon after it opened. our whole table got fried chicken as the menu is fairly limited. the fried portion was so thick and hard (not crispy) that it kind of chipped off the breast meat-and it had zero flavor. now i am all for new southern fare and i won't claim that i am some sort of expert just because i spent the first 28 years of my life in the deep south. i hope they make some adjustments because they are closer to me than my favorite southern restaurant which i will refrain from mentioning out of respect. i would humbly submit that the menu would benefit from the addition of more vegetables and meat choices. although maybe they are trying to elevate southern food to some haute cuisine level that apparently does not include a bit of salt. i am not a salt junkie, but you gotta have SOME. atmosphere was stark and lack luster. Pros: despite food, service was good Cons: bland food, terribly boring atmosphere more

too noisy--at least on Friday nights 10/21/2006

Delicious food, well prepared and served up by enthusiastic wait staff; way too noisy, and waiting patrons crowd in on seated tables making those eating uncomfortable; put up a few nice floor screens between the tables and the standing and sitting waiting patrons for both privacy and to keep they back from the eaters; install some noise soakers, like on ceiling; Pros: thumbs up, ears down more

Loved it! 10/17/2006

Just went there over the weekend for brunch. I loved the whole experience, great atmosphere and good service. I had a very tasty mimosa and the oyster benedict which I loved. The oysters had great flavor and there was also delicious bacon under the egg on the biscuit. One small complaint is that the side potatoes were cold, when I had my leftovers later they were much better straight out of my oven. I also tasted my friends biscuits and gravy which were delicious. We are looking forward to our next meal there. Pros: Great vibe, fun menu and reasonable prices. more
