Must Have the Veal Chop! 2/13/2011

I love, love Prego's! I always get the Veal special, the mac and cheese is like grandma used to make and the sauteed crab fingers are excellent when they have them. I always sit at the bar for dinner because Kathy is awesome. No matter how busy she is she always makes me feel special. The sommelier (wish I could remember his name) is great. Tell him what you like and what you want t spend and he will find something you will love. Also, he wont make a face if you say your price range is $30 a bottle. They also catered my friends wedding and the food was top notch! more

Try the daily specials. 12/22/2008

I've been going to Prego for years on a regular basis. While not all of the food on the menu is excellent, I've found that in general, they are delicious and of solid and consistent quality. The daily specials are spectacular in some cases, like this lobster linguini dish they've been serving recently and the soft-shell crab. Although this is probably my favorite Italian restaruant (and I eat out almost every meal), I recognize that this isn't like the Italian I've had overseas or in pricier restaruants. I take many guests there, and while everyone agrees Prego is delicious, not everyone LOVES it like I do.\r Certain dishes are worth trying becaues my guests universally enjoy them -- like their lump crabmeat salad and the pepper soup. And their desserts! Yummm. The chocolate souffle! Make sure that it is ordered 20 minutes in advance. Not too sweet, not too light. Just weighty enough. The best espresso in Houston. The service is so-so.\r The dinner can be expensive. Might be worth it to try their lunch. more

Hit-or-miss: funny-tasting seafood, cold doughy bread; great lamb, good dipping olive oil. Service great. 10/5/2008

Went on a Sunday at lunchtime. Pretty empty. Service was excellent, but food was hit-or-miss. The bread they brought to the table was cold, and some of the bread seemed doughy and undercooked. The dipping oil was fantastic, lots of herb and garlic taste. My fiancee ordered the lamb; we both enjoyed it, although the potatoes that came with it were a little bland. I ordered the linguine pescatore with spicy red sauce; it tasted gross to me. The various shellfish in the dish had really weird tastes, as though they had stored the shellfish in the fridge with other foods and it had absorbed the smells around it. \r Take your chances with this place. I probably won't go there again. more

Nice Italian Neighborhood Restaurant 3/18/2008

Very good Italian food, much better that chains like Carrabba's and the like. The food is fresh and well-prepared, and the service is excellent. They have a good kid's menu, and a very nice wine list. It gets busy here, so definitely make a reservation if you want to eat during peak hours. more

Great Brunch! 2/13/2008

My Girlfriend and I tried this spot out a few months back. Their brunch is super yum + affordable. I had the Spaghetti Carbonara, and my Lady had the Rigatoni w/ shrimp. She hasn't been able to stop talking about the Carbonara ever since. Good Stuff! more

Best restaurant in Rice Village 10/15/2007

The first 6 pages of the menu are filled with wines, and it's not until you reach the last 2 pages do you actually see the food. Unfortunately, my friend and I are not big fans of wine though if we were I'm sure it would have complemented our meal very well. The food selection was great, and I really enjoyed my salmon and my friend's veal entrees. The portions are huge, and the food was well-cooked and well-seasoned. I wasn't so impressed with the caesar salad as the last reviewer, but overall I'd say that this is the best restaurant in Rice Village, and I don't even like Italian food that much. The only bad thing was that it was sort of noisy, and we were there on one of the slower nights. I'm sure if we were there on a weekend night it would've been impossible to hear. Pros: food, wine selection, service Cons: noisy more

A Treasure Close to Home 6/25/2007

I live 2 miles from Rice Village and always forget about this place when I'm craving Italian. My sister and I recently stopped in for dinner. I started with a petite Caesar, which was fresh and flavorable and not saturated with dressing. I then ordered the pumpkin and shrimp risotto with pancetta, and she had the primavera risotto with corn and asparagus among other veggies. Both dishes were heavenly. I would love to have this dish once a week, but it's loaded with sinful ingredients. I ate the rest of my risotto for breakfast the next day, and was reminded why I need to visit this place more often. Pros: friendly staff, bustling atmosphere Cons: parking, cramped waiting area more

This restaurant does it RIGHT. 4/9/2007

My god I love this place. I took my girlfriend here on our first date, and made reservations for a specific table, which, from insider info, is the best seat in the house! (Table 24) :-)\r \r The wait staff was friendly, attentive, and informative, the menu and wine list were well rounded, and the clean atmosphere and quirky circus photography decor makes for a great date night. \r \r I ordered the pork chops, which unfortunately was a bit dry, but I tried some of my girlfriend's salmon dish, which was much tastier. We ordered a bottle of merlot from the list, and as expected, it complemented our meal quite nicely. \r \r I highly recommend this place for a great romantic evening out. They'll treat you right! Pros: Everything! (Cept maybe the pork chops) Cons: Parking is always an issue. more

Amazing Food 1/29/2007

Living in Sugar Land, I quickly grow tired of the chain/corporate restaurants and mediocre attempts at original and unique dining. Prego is a wonderful escape from mass-market monotony. The atmosphere is comfortable and laid-back and the service was very polite and efficient. The menu offers more than traditional Italian fare, most of the items very unique and specific. We started off with the spicy crab fingers, which were wonderful. I ordered the Linguini Pescatore. The sauce was amazing, light and flavorful, not too acidic and not too sweet, complementing the shellfish and shrimp perfectly. The clams, mussels, calamari and crab were very fresh, tender, I could even still taste the sweetness of the meat and subtle brine. My fiance and his brother ordered the Red Snapper, which was served with haricot verts, roasted butternut squash and oven dried tomato sauce. Afterward, we all shared a trio of desserts. An eggy bread pudding, which was more like a custard but was amazingly light and sweet, with berries and sweet cream. A warm apple tart and a dreamy panna cotta. I think I dream about those desserts at night! A wonderful dining experience, excellent service (our server was very attentive, but unobtrusive) and amazing food. A welcomed (and much needed) change in scenery and dining! Pros: Amazing food and service Cons: Very busy at lunch (as is most of Rice Village) more

Great italien in Rice Village 11/24/2006

Great lunch spot for the medical center crowd. The food is first rate and the service is excellent. Pros: Wine list, italien Cons: parking in the village more

Great Food-Great Service-Great Music 11/21/2006

I love this restaurant! The food was amazing and the price was very reasonable. My recommendations: Start off with the Potato Gnocchi with pancetta, scallions and caramelized tomato. This is everything gnocchi should be, delicious and served in huge portions. For dinner we had the Roasted Butternut Squash Tortellini with walnut sage sauce and the Smoked Duck Ravioli with port soaked cherries, roasted pear, pistachios and white balsamic sauce. The Butternut Squash Tortellini won as the best dish, but both would leave you with a very big smile on your face. Pros: Food, Service, Music Cons: A little loud, but the food makes up for it more

Best crab fingers ever. Service was attentive but not intrusive. 8/25/2006

The crab fingers and grilled pesto bread were absolutely exquisite! I actually contemplated ordering another ""appetizer"" of them for my entree. The flavor was superb. Then came the linguine-crusted red snapper. Again the flavor was spectacular. I even commented to the waiter that it had been years since I had been content like that after a meal! We followed our dinner with an hour-long walk through the Rice Village area. What a great experience! We'll definitely be back! Pros: Food, Service Cons: Parking can be tight after 7 pm more

Beautiful Ambiance 2/7/2006

Whether you are having a romantic dinner for 2 or a girls night out outing, this place has such a beautiful ambiance. Low lights, votive candles on the tables. I went Sunday night when they had live music. Pros: friendly staff, beautiful ambiance, great location Cons: close quarters more

A good choice for a nice family dinner 11/26/2005

I went to Prego with my boyfriend, his parents, and his grandmother last night and had a great time. I was wary about picking a restaurant that would appeal to such a wide range (mid twenties to late seventies), but Prego pleased the whole crowd. The menu is mostly wine list, so don't pass up choosing a bottle. I asked our waiter to recommend a choice from the list of ""remarkable whites"" highlighted at the menu's front for our table, and he immediately selected a Viognier that turned out to be right on. The ambience is wonderful, but might be a little loud for the hard of hearing once the restaurant fills up around 7:30, especially around a large circular table like the one where we sat. Not a fault of the restaurant, just a word of caution. The food was simply excellent. Overall a wonderful evening for everyone! Pros: ambience, excellent food, service Cons: veggie-incompatible, not cheap (worth it), bar noises carry more

Excellent Sicilian in Village 9/14/2005

I went to Prego for a lunch meeting today and I can't wait to go back and try dinner. I started with the Prego salad which consists of mixed greens, carrots, cherry tomatoes, with a vinegarette. Very light and had a wonderful flavor. For my entree I had the ravioli with baked mozzerella topped with a vodka sauce and porabello mushrooms. It was melt in your mouth good. We skipped the desserts but they all looked fantastic. I can't wait to back and try a sampling for their extensive wine list. Pros: excellent food, great service Cons: small more

Good Italian 7/2/2005

The Best 6/15/2004

A very special place for couples and friends. Altho my now teenage son also loves the place, part of its charm is that it is a decidedly adult place. Try the wine room for a party of 8 - 10 if the cafe/wine bar type clatter gets a little too much. The food cannot be beat! Pros: delicious food, friendly staff, reasonable parking Cons: sometimes a line more

Superb!!! 2/7/2004

My wife and I stopped by Prego for the first time on a Saturday evening around 6. The place was very busy and had about a 30 minute wait since we did not have reservations. We went to the bar for a drink and decided to just eat there at the suggestion of the bartenders Cathy and Mike. We also took their suggestions on our meal and were blown away by the food. It was fantastic! I highly recommend Prego if you enjoy great food, attentive service and a great wine list! Ask for the capellini crusted snapper special!! Pros: Service, Great Food, Wine List more
