Editorial review from Citysearch 9/24/2015

I took my car here and was very upset with the service. I had a flat tire and ended up needing new tires. I had to wait over 3 hours of the tires when they told me it would be an hour. I then had to go back the next day because they did not do it correct and both my back tires were flat. I had to wait another 2 hours for them to correct their mistake. more

Great Employees 8/13/2012

The employees at this Pep Boys were extremely friendly and they helped us with everything we needed. They also mentioned that my alignment was off which ended up saving me some money. more

Friendly people who work quickly! 7/28/2012

They've always found the issues that needed to be fixed, they are prompt and courteous. Both my daughter and I have taken our cars to Pep Boys and never had an issue with them and everything is completed in a timely manner. They also work with your schedule where as most places are only open on the weekdays making it difficult to get your car taken care of conveniently. more

Reliabiliy unreliable - buyer beware 6/26/2011

Driving from Philadelphia to a new job in Madison, my car overheated. Tow driver insisted on using Pep Boys in State College despite middling to poor expereince with several service locations in PHL - first mistake. Got water pump diagnosis after 1 1/2 hours, by 4 pm Friday. Asst Tom (attitude?) tries to manage my expectations by saying it will take 5 /12 hrs and besides flush/fill will also need new fan clutch. Good news is they finished in 2 1/2 hours, $729 later. Work did get me 800 miles to Madison but I noticed coolant leaking upon arrival. \r \r Called mgr Mike; offers if I call closest Pep Boys 90 miles away AND they will tow my car to their shop, and IF THEY determine the part installed is faulty, then Pep Boys picks up the bill. When I asked if a garage in Madison could determine if the part and PB's work was faulty, he declined. PB wants to be judge and jury of how good their work is. I can't afford that risk after not only PB's inability to do the work right for me thi more

almost ripped off better to do yourself 3/21/2011

went to pep boys today service guy was ok manager spent most of time walking around would not even ask if he could help. Big problem was labor rate not even posted but seems to be around $100.00 AN HOUR .Asked to look at our blazer parts $50.00 ,$300 to install. Went to A&A auto got parts layed on ground fixed it my self less then an hour WOULD NOT RECOMMED TO NOBODY ,I think they should be shameful for ripping people off more

Completely Unsatisfactory 1/29/2011

I have worked in both customer service and in 3 different auto body shops and Pep Boys has the worst customer service and work I have ever seen. They tend to try to get as much money out of you as possible so be cautioned if you are unaware what your car actually needs. Ask them to show you what needs to be done on the vehicle itself, they will have to take you back to the shop to do so. DO NOT get your vehicle inspected here unless you want to pay for unnecessary parts and labor. They are in it for the money and that is all, they care nothing for the customer. \r \r It is sad that a business has stooped to this level. I am writing in hopes that the owner will re-evaluate his or her business and decide that the customer is truly important. Mechanics can be gracious instead of rude and demeaning. Parts salesmen can ask to help instead of standing around while you wait at the counter to purchase something. Re-evaluate your business as a whole and turn it around to serve the community in a more

Changed my Tire...FREE! 12/8/2010

I have to say that Pep Boys really helped me out with a flat. After 45 minutes of trying to change the flat myself...I drove the car in at 4:45pm with the flat tire and asked if they could throw on my spare to get me home. I have an hour commute from State College to my house and didn't want my husband to have to pick me up. They got the flat changed and had me on the road home around 6:30pm. The best part...NO CHARGE! That's right folks...they didn't charge me a dime to do the work. The service guys never tried to be pushy and sell me tires but they did recommend that I get two new ones put on. I have never been to this store before and I received stellar customer service. The only reason I gave them a 4 out of 5 is because they said it would be done within 30-45 minutes and it took an hour and a half. Might have been because I left and went to get a beer and some food and told them I'd be back in an hour. Overall it was a good experience with them and I'll be making a call t more

Pep Boys is the WORST 5/10/2010

My Jeep broke down outside State College coming back from Pittsburg PA. I had the car towed to the Pep Boys in State College at 4:00 PM. The manager promised to look at the car the same day. Three hours later we were told that they were running late with the other service jobs and therefore they weren't able to look at our car. I spoke to the manager again that we were stranded and needed to return home in Stroudsburg PA. His response was extremely rude and demeaning. He added ?Sorry, we are doing our best......? Then I asked why we were promised that they would look at the car and they didn't for more than 4 hours that we waited? We got the same response ?Sorry, We are doing our best...". At 8:00 PM Pep Boys closed and we were forced to spend the night at a hotel. The next day I took my car to Sears and had it fixed with no problems. Stay away from these guys. They should not be using such deceiving techniques with customers. If they cannot handle a car they should be more

My Experience with Pep Boys 9/30/2009

My Jeep broke down outside State College on the way to the Penn St./Temple game. I was towed to the Pep Boys in State College. The staff was very professional and helpful, they were great to us! They found the part, and knowing we lived 150 miles away they promised to fix the Jeep that same day even though they were "booked solid!"They even got us a cab to get to the stadium to see the game while our car was being worked on. After the game and some shopping downtown, they called us and told us we were finished. We took another cab, picked up the Jeep at a very reasonable price, and went home with no more problems at all.I want to thank them all, and would recommend them to anyone! more

Pep Boys is HORRIBLE 8/14/2009

I was charged $52 for a A/C diagnosis that was inconclusive. They could not fix the problem themselves [of course, having failed to even identify the problem!]. I was not told that not being able to fix the problem was a possible outcome. Now, I have to take it to an Infiniti dealer and spend another $100 just to run a diagnosis all over again and identify the problem! I was lead to believe that the diagnosis would tell me if the compressor need replacing or if the A/C fluid needs replenishing. I was informed that once they identify the problem, they would be able to fix it [and that the cost of repair would depend on the nature of the problem]. I think, having charged $52, the least they could have done was apprise me that they might fail to fix the problem. A condescending "We recommend you take the car to an Infiniti dealer" is the worse they could have done. [having been unable to identify or fix the problem, they don't have the right to use 'recommend' do they?!] I was treat more

STATE COLLEGE RESIDENT 4/18/2009

I have lived here all my life, and State College residents know NOT to take your vehicle here.\r For some reason, I did, though.\r I needed new brake pads and took it here because there was a sale.\r First, the service dept staff is extremely rude and demeaning.\r Second, the brake pads were installed, but as soon as I drove the car off, the brake warning lights came on. The car veered to the right.\r In short, if you want to endanger your life, take your car to Pep Boys in State College.\r Otherwise...\r STAY AWAY! more

Stranded daughter at college 9/19/2008

My daughter's car would not start. She is 3 hours away from home. Friends tried to jump the battery without any luck. I googled information on line and saw Pep Boys. I called them and asked if they would mind trying to jump it for her. If no luck, tow it to PEP Boys. I gave them her cell phone number. Within 30 minutes, my daughter was on her way home! I had my daughter put their number in her cell phone for any other car trouble. I will also suggest them to her Resident Assistant for any other stranded student. Quick Courteous and Got the job done! more

Definitely Recommend! 4/14/2008

Being a college student with my first car, I have never had to bring it in for any types of repairs. I thought I had a leak in my tire so I brought my car here and not only were they nice and respectable (I mean come on, I'm a 20 year old girl who knows NOTHING about cars!) but they were fast and did what they said they would do. Turns out I needed something replaced but they just replaced it for free and kept my total at $15 for the labor. I'm definitely coming here for any future problems with my car! more

Service Department 11/21/2007

Our cars fuel pump went out while we were vacationing in PA. Pep Boys took excellent care of us. We dropped our car off on Saturday night 8 PM and it was fixed by 1 PM the next day. We were afraid since we were from out of state the price would be more than if we took it to our own mechanic, but it wasn't. The price was right in line of what it would cost if we had it done at home. \r \r I would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs service done on their car. more

Pep Boys - State College 9/3/2006

There are some real professionals and stand-up mechanics at Pep Boy of State College. I took my car in there one time because my whole panel was electric and it went out one day. Well, I did not know much about cars then and did not even know how to replace the fuse or know that it was the fuse. They took my car in, found the fuse, replaced it for free and wouldn?t even accept money when I tried to give them a tip. It was very classy. more

I like Pep Boys 9/27/2005

They have a lot of professional stuff there. I like Pep Boys. You can find any repair manual for your own car, which is really helpful for you to do some stuff with your own car. Also you can find a lot of stuff there. I like it. And they have some promotions some time, just like mail in rebate. You might be able to find some deals if you are deal hunter. I will recommend this to the people I know. I also will stop by later. more
