come for clams 11/1/2006

Out of the Blue is a fine seafood restaurant located in Davis Sq. They serve up the greatest fried clams, cooked in a lite batter. The sauces are always delicious especially the fra diablo sauce. I had the fried calimari for an appetizer which is also cooked in what I think is the same lite batter as the fried clams. I highly recommend Out of the Blue as it is my favorite seafood restaurant destination. Pros: great batter more

A Misunderstanding 9/4/2006

Last saturday Sept 2 about 6 pm I noticed a young lady by the window she had stopped eating her grilled swordfish. I went over and I asked if everything was ok, she replied no because she had found a piece of hair in her food. I apologized and asked her if she wanted another piece of swordfish or something else. She replied that she wanted another sword fish. I took the fish and got her another one it took about 10 minutes for the fish to cook I brought the fish over and apologized again. After the party got there check she asked the waitress if she could be compensated for the incident. The waitress checked with me and I said to to just leave a tip but the waitress misunderstood and told them to just not leave a tip. When I saw this on line I fully refunded her credit card. And by the way no one at Out of the Blue has long black hair and that was what was found in the fish. Steve Liakos, owner of Out of the Blue. more

Terrible Service 9/2/2006

Out of the blue came highly recommended to us by several people. Pleasant casual atmosphere. Service was brisk, but the fried calamari was excellent - so we tried to ignore the service. My sister's entree came with a long black hair mangled in the fish. She was very polite told them and asked for a new plate, which she got about 15 minutes later. Not only did they not apologize, but when it came time to get the check, the fish was still on the bill. She politely asked for the manager and some type of compensation. The manager didn't come over but told the server to tell us not to leave a tip. I wouldn't eat here again because of the incredibly rude service and wouldn't recommend to anyone. more

Excellent Italian Seafood and Pasta 8/4/2006

Some friends recommended this restaurant to us. They raved about the fried calamari, saying it was the best. They said the pasta dishes were excellent, the portions generous and the prices very reasonable. I looked it up on this website for directions and couldn't believe it when I read the review by mypleasure (June 25, 2006). Despite this review, we decided to try it for ourselves. Last night, August 4th, we arrived around 7:30pm. The hostess greeted us and promptly seated us. (There was only one table open). Menus, ice water and a basket of bread and butter were immediately placed on our table. The owner greeted us and helped us with our wine selection. There were many wines to choose from in the $20-$25 range. We ordered the fried calamari - the small order ($8.00) was more than enough for two. The calamari was lightly battered, cooked to a golden color, and was very tender. Entrees were priced between $14.00 and $22.00. Not $25.00 per entree as stated in the review we read. Only one item on the menu was $24.00, which was the filet mignon. The lobster fra diablo special was $26.00. My friend had the baked haddock with a side of pasta w/white sauce (choice of white or red sauce) for $17.00 and I had the mussels and linguini (fra diablo style -medium) $15.00. The pasta was cooked al dente as we requested. The haddock was lightly topped with seasoned bread crumbs and fresh lemon - which kept it moist. My dish was excellent, the mussels covered the plate of pasta. The sauce was nicely seasoned with fresh garlic and spices. The portions were so plentiful - a doggy bag was necessary. Although, we didn't have room for dessert, we enjoyed a cup of cappuccino (decaf). I would highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant, the staff was attentive and the food was absolutely delicious. I live in the Back Bay where there are many good restaurants, but I will definitely go back to Out of the Blue. Try it for yourself. Pros: Authentic Italian dishes, quality food and good prices more

Boring menu; Mediocre quality; Way overpriced 6/24/2006

We were in the mood for Mediterranean style seafood so we thought OOTB would be the perfect choice. However this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time and I'm still regretting the choice a week later. I eat out a lot and don't mind spending a lot for a delicious meal. But the quality/portion of the entrees didn't match the prices (approx. $25 per entree). First of all, my chowder had a huge lump of raw flour in it. The entrees were no better. They were very simply prepared -- so simply prepared, I didn't feel like I was eating a restaurant meal but something that I had made from leftovers at home. The Fra Diabolo sauce tasted like it came out of a can. The lemon wine sauce was overly acidic and thin. The pasta itself was no better than what a college student would make in his dorm kitchen from a box of pasta that's on sale. And why would you fry a soft shell crab in seasoned breading that masks the flavor of the crab? The server was morose and unresponsive. He argued with me when I asked for a dinner fork (I had a salad fork). Overall, not recommended. Pros: prompt seating Cons: prices, service, quality of food more

My family and I enjoy seafood and we were just thrilled to find this place. Everything we tried was excellent. The service was friendly but brisk. The owner delivered our plates himself...what more can you ask for? Pros: Quality food, Good service Cons: The parking more

Fishing for Value 11/16/2003

This place was great! It doesn't offer the best value, but the food was really good. The fra diablo sauce was excellent and their grilled fish makes you feel like summer, even in the middle of winter. Just don't expect much from the decor. more

Good neighborhood restaurant 2/16/2003

Out of the Blue is a pretty good neighborhood restaurant. As you can probably tell from the name, its focus is on the seafood. Their preparation is pretty simple and the seafood is fresh- can't beat this combo. more
