Some friends recommended this restaurant to us. They raved about the fried calamari, saying it was the best. They said the pasta dishes were excellent, the portions generous and the prices very reasonable. I looked it up on this website for directions and couldn't believe it when I read the review by mypleasure (June 25, 2006). Despite this review, we decided to try it for ourselves. Last night, August 4th, we arrived around 7:30pm. The hostess greeted us and promptly seated us. (There was only one table open). Menus, ice water and a basket of bread and butter were immediately placed on our table. The owner greeted us and helped us with our wine selection. There were many wines to choose from in the $20-$25 range. We ordered the fried calamari - the small order ($8.00) was more than enough for two. The calamari was lightly battered, cooked to a golden color, and was very tender. Entrees were priced between $14.00 and $22.00. Not $25.00 per entree as stated in the review we read. Only one item on the menu was $24.00, which was the filet mignon. The lobster fra diablo special was $26.00. My friend had the baked haddock with a side of pasta w/white sauce (choice of white or red sauce) for $17.00 and I had the mussels and linguini (fra diablo style -medium) $15.00. The pasta was cooked al dente as we requested. The haddock was lightly topped with seasoned bread crumbs and fresh lemon - which kept it moist. My dish was excellent, the mussels covered the plate of pasta. The sauce was nicely seasoned with fresh garlic and spices. The portions were so plentiful - a doggy bag was necessary. Although, we didn't have room for dessert, we enjoyed a cup of cappuccino (decaf). I would highly recommend this restaurant. The atmosphere was pleasant, the staff was attentive and the food was absolutely delicious. I live in the Back Bay where there are many good restaurants, but I will definitely go back to Out of the Blue. Try it for yourself.
