Editorial review from Citysearch 8/23/2012

I've been eating here since the early 90's. Love it every time I go and I always trying to bring someone new to introduce them to good German food all of whom loved it. I have a few favorites, the saurbraten and the Jagerschnitzel are fantastic! Try either and you won't be disappointed. The dining room always feels like home and the service is exceptionally friendly and warm. more

Not good 2/3/2012

Food quality, value, and customer service were all seriously lacking. The salad was warm and all tasted like cucumber. The schnitzel was tough and the gravy was horrible. The potato pancakes tasted as if they'd been made with the previous day's potatoes and onions. We let 2 waitresses and the manager know how bad the food was after eating less than a third of our portions, but didn't even get a discount. Manager was not friendly and acted like she'd not heard a complaint before. We've been to Germany several times and know what it's supposed to taste like. This wasn't even close. The best part of the whole night was the guy playing the accordion. more

Note From The Owner 2/2/2012

my eleven year old son was looking at the reviews and showed me the one below from 6/10 "" so you think you know what you are getting?"" i just laughed because it was a review his father had written, obviously to hurt us, so i told him you can't believe everything you read. his father was stupid enough to use the name ""papapiro"", which is what he used to call my son when he was a baby. \r anyway, i just wanted to let people know the same. as for the food , of course i think it's awesome, it's my mom's cooking! she was born and raised in munich and the style of food we serve is what she grew up on. as most people who have lived in germany know the foods can vary greatly depending on what region you are in.\r growing up in this restaurant from the age of 18 to my now almost 41 years, i am biased but i do think our guys in the kitchen work really hard! \r going down the menu: our sauerbraten is a roast we cook and season ourselves and make the gravy from that, the spaetzle are made from scratch(a lot of work), we get the sauerkraut imported raw but we cook and season it, we shred our red cabbage, cook and season it. \r cordon bleu: cut and butterfly our own pork loin and stuff with ham and cheese and breaded and cooked when ordered\r we cut our own meats, go through tons of potatoes, potato pancakes from scratch, bake and season our corned beef , i'm sure that's why our rubens are so great\r we use great quality lunch meats, not that jellied pressed looking stuff, make both german and american potato salads\r and we like our pan-fried potato's BLACKENED!! my mom always says you give a german white potatos and he'll have a heartattack and the beer has to have a head on it!\r it's not that we don't serve great food, some items might not be to your liking and then you just try something else next time.\r even before we had the restaurant one of my favorite things to do is eat good food and as often as i have frequented a certain restaurant for over twenty years there are times when i do eat a dish i'm not too crazy about and the next time order my favorite again.\r so i thank our faithful regulars for over 23 years of business and allowing us to serve ya'll the food we love and being able to watch your families grow up along with ours. more

This is a touch of home 11/30/2011

I came here to eat in 1983. I had come here via the military, and I missed german food. I found more then that. \r The owners were friendly, the atmosphere was right, even the smells were right. These reviews I have read about costco desserts, and luke warm strudel are silly. The desserts are kept frozen untill needed..'hot' means it was likely microwaved. some desserts may even be bought at a wholesalers. \r Act like adults, ask for your strudel to be heated. Dont order a dessert you dont want. \r If you are German, or have ever lived in Germany, you know every 'wurst' tatstes different depending on where you live, My family is prussian, from the far north, and the wurst here is one of the many versions one might find. \r For those of us who live here, this restaurant makes me forget for a moment I am not in very warm Texas. I can suffer a slice of costco carrot cake. more

Good service OK food 10/16/2011

My Husband and i ate here. He ordered bratwurst with potatoes and sauerkraut. I had ""hot"" apple strudel. he said the Brat was missing something but he couldn't put his finger on it. My strudel was luke warm with cold spots in it:( The sauerkraut and potatoes were good. we also ordered beer. It was good too! we especially liked the waitress with the green nail polish! more

pretty disappointed in service 9/11/2011

I came to san Antonio to get my mother then we wanted to try something new so, we decided to go to Old World German Restaurant. At first I thought it was pretty cool the prices were ok a little on the high side but, I kind of excepted that when I saw the building. i was willing to pay the price for the food and that's when things went down hill. The food was good just cold instead of hot like it sitting on a counter somewhere. Then I had to go find the witress just to get a refill for my husband which made him upset. We took the dessert to go my mom's was good; mine on the other hand taste like the apples came from a can. My husband say never again; my mom say maybe we hit a bad night. I say maybe a different waitress. more

Good food, good beer 2/17/2011

The restaurant needs a slight remodel but it was clean, and contrary to other reviews, did not smell like smoke. When my party of 7 arrived this evening, I was a little concerned since the dining room was so empty. I left wondering why it was so empty. The food was very good and the service was fine. All of us left satisfied. I honestly have no idea why there was only one other couple eating dinner. Give this place a try. I wish they had more than 4 German beer taps but the menu was solid. more

Nice place, nice beer, nice service, what else can I say? 11/5/2010

If you want a paceful place, with nice service and good food this the place. I'm so sorry for the people that says to many lies about this restaurant, it is not the best german restaurant in the world but it's nice, clean, the waitress are kind, the cashier, and seriously if you are a cheap person don't go there please because probably you'll say later that everything cost $20 or $15, and it's an exaggeration, I mean one plate cost around $16.99 but it is a big plate, and the sides like salads or spaetzle or soup it cost between $3.99 and $6.99 and the truth is that if you want real german food the autentic german food, you have to go to Germany. This food is german how it's possible. I'm a regular costumer and I just like it as always. \r \r When you go to a Japanese restauran, all the staff are Japanese, here in U.S or in a chinese restaurant all are chines? you should have more criteria to judge something or someone just because the people that work there are from another country or place not Germany. \r \r Like I said if you are looking for peace and kind service, good beer, ando good food, you should go. more

So you think you know what you are getting? 6/8/2010

It has come to our attention that this restaurant has been cheating their customers for years. For example the delicious treats and desserts although they are said to be home maid are nothing more than Cisco wholesale. Wait, it gets even better. So you think you are eating veal in your Schnitzel like it says on the menu? Think again. Nothing more than pork pounded to death. Talk about deceptive advertising! If nothing else, people should be entitled to know what they eat. No need to lie. At least my wife and I think so. Pros: sounds good Cons: they smoke violating city ordinances more

Won't go Back 3/26/2010

There were five of us out for an evening of dining and fun. THe service was so poor we had to ask the bus boy to get us some water. The worse was the smell of cigarette smoke as you enter and leaving the restaurant. There are too many places to go in San Antonio for dinner.... this place will never be on my list again. Pros: I did not see any Pro's Cons: Poor service and smell of Smoke more

Old World German Deli is the BEST 2/14/2010

The owner knew my face when I walked in even though I had not been there for about 3 years. I promised my Hispanic friend that he would not be disappointed and he wasn't. He had the bratwurst and kraut and I had the Rouladen with spaetze and purple cabbage. It was excellent as always. Salad was cold and fresh. The waitress was very kind and sweet. Accordian music was icing on the cake. He performed admirably on all musical selections. The perfect dining experience. Pros: A fine dining experience more

Skip it 1/15/2010

I knew better but the four friends wanted to try it. As soon as you enter you are hit by tobacco smoke as the owner will not abide by the city ordinace and the smoking area is directly by the entrance and not separated by a wall.I ordered a spllit pea soup and tea and the bill was just under ten dollars. The soup was probably from a can. The smoke was over powering and could be detected as far away as one could sit. The server was pleasant. Pros: Can't think of any. Cons: Smokey and over priced more

Awful! Awful! Awful 7/8/2009

I'm German and this is HORRIBLE food. We were the only ones in the restaurant and now I know why. The ""special"" was $15.95. All of their entrees are in this price range. The food you get isn't worth $5....it is awful and I was really looking forward to good German food. The food tasted burnt. Our son ordered a $9.95 ham and cheese sandwich. Thank goodness he couldn't eat it all because his mother and I finished it, preferring over our slop. The sandwich was delicious and should be for that price. The potatoes that came with it were burnt. Our meat (goulash) was burnt. I wish you could see me.....I'm a big guy and ALWAYS finish my plate...I couldn't eat half of that slop. Our total bill with tax and without tip for two specials, one ham and cheese sandwich and 2 iced teas and one Dr. Pepper came to over $51! booo hooo...could have had \r Texas Roadhouse for that price. Don't mind paying if you produce the quality. The place is a dump on the inside as well and reeks of cigarette smoke even in the non-smoking section. I will NEVER be back. Pros: Plenty of Parking Cons: Eating there is the main drawback! more

What the ???? There is no Zero Stars? 12/23/2008

Had the hankerin' for some authentic Germanic cuisine. Went to this place and ordered what I always order when going German and ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel. It was tragic. Sauce was good, but the meat was shoe leather. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to know that you take pieces of pork (loin, shoulder, etc...) and pound it out thin (tenderizing it!!!!!!!!!) and then cook the pork (sometimes breaded, sometimes not depending on the region of Germany being represented) until it is done. What I received was gastly, full of gristle and terrible to cut with a butter knife (for $16.95). Wife's knockwurst was good, beer was good. I give it an D-. Pros: Beer Cons: Jaeger Schnitzel more

Good for a first time 1/10/2008

My boyfriend and I went here so that I could experience genuine German food for the first time, and I'm definitely a fan after my dinner at Old World. I thought I knew what sauerkraut tasted like, but theirs was great and the schnitzel came in a delicious, generous portion. It was a little pricey for a college student, but the atmosphere was worth it. It wasn't crowded, so we were able to talk in an intimate setting and our waitress was really helpful in suggesting what to order. My first time at Old World will certainly not be my last, in fact we're planning on going back this weekend! Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, great service Cons: May want to avoid if dining on a tight budget more

You should check it out for yourself... 12/13/2007

Due to the poor reviews seen here, almost didn't go to this restaurant. But we braved it and went. \r \r I found the dinner experience to be very pleasant, overall. The very-german hostess (and owner) was nice and seemed willing to reflect any positive acknolowdgement, and smiled and welcomed us. Possibly she is also ready to reflect negative acknowlegement, like you might expect of most actual Europeans. If you're expecting someone to run over and kiss your a**, and be all happy like at Bennigan's, you might be disappointed, and if rude to her, she might return it, plus some. \r \r It was clean and cozy with few other diners and we received immediate service. Some reviews advised $$$; But all under $20; most under $15. Salad with German dressing: fresh and tasty. German coffee: different and good. Smoked porkchops & bratwurst. Some might say the portions are small; meat portions follow European standards:1/3 of the plate, 1 bratwurst and 1 porkchop. Not 1/2 like your chain eatery. Tons of kraut and potatoes, and I was full. It was all excellent. Desserts; apple strudel & Bavarian cream cake, large and good (and easily feed two), but pricey at $6.00 each. Who cares, the rest of the meal was pretty reasonable.\r \r I haven't been for lunch or deli part. But if you ever go to a real deli on the east coast or in Europe, you may notice that a large portion of abuse is usually available for you, and possibly on the menu.\r \r As for the other reviews saying non-authentic because ""there are mexicans working in the back"", I'd say, 'Find me a restaurant on this hemisphere where that isn't the case"". If a mexican waitress in a German national dress isn't entertaining...\r \r The only thing I could possibly slam the place on was the men's room cleanliness, which seemed to need more of a demolition and rebuilding than actual cleaning. If this was up to par, I'd say the whole experience was excellent and I will definitely be going back, if the reviews don't put it out of business first. Pros: Great, authentic (or at least tasty) food and reasonable Cons: If hanging out in the men's bathroom is your thing, you may be dissapointed more

A place to get a way from it all 10/5/2007

Old World German Resterrant is a place to keep in mind that is German. Run by Germans for people looking for a German experience. There is good german beer and food and it has a very nice atmosphere. It is NOT red lobster and that is what I really like about this place. It is uniue. On most nights there is a German accordion player. Today I had the wheat beer and the pork sausage and kraut. It was fantanstic. My grandparents are German and my Mom makes good German food. I served myself and in this small place was not a problem, it is a relaxed atmosphere. Pros: Step into a different world for a while Cons: Do NOT expect commercial dining more

Horrible 9/9/2007

I saw this restaurant going home from work one day, and the outer decore really caught my eye. I have not had good german food in a REALLY long time. So I decided to try it. When I went in, I was not greeted in any way, but since they had so many customers (all of 1) I figured they were just busy, which is understandable. I was not seated by anyone, but had to order at the front counter, and pay for it right away, which was a little wierd for a ""good"" restaurant. No complaints YET. I did go sit myself in the pleasant dining area, and waited for my food. The stone faced lady (Waitress????-not sure) brought out my salad, which was really good actually. Then she brought my schnitzel.......Now I have had schnitzel before, (my mom is German), This stuff was the worst I have EVER had. It was nothing more than a boneless pork chop that had been cooked to death till it had absolutely no moisture left at all. . and then smothered in some horrible tasting gravy with mushrooms. I did order Jaeger schnitzel, so it was supposed to have mushrooms. But it was also supposed to be schnitzel... not dry pork chop. I am not know for leaving food on my plate, but in this case I could not eat it. It was nasty. I will not be returning to that establishment and I do not recemment it to anyone. Now I know why they have you pay for it before you even sit down. Pros: Plenty of parking Cons: Not for you if you want to eat good food, but great if you like horrible food. more
