Great Food and Service 8/4/2007

We first visited Old World German Restaurant in August 2007. Since that time, we have returned several times for dinner. If you are looking for German cuisine in San Antonio, this is the place. The food is great. We were seated quickly. The service was excellent. Pros: Authentic German food; good service; easy parking more

Worst Restaurant 7/28/2007

When entering restaurant greeter was HIDEOUS !!!! NO SMILE and I had to tell him to show us to our table.\r The salad came out with out the rolls. I ordered sauerbraten with spaetzle and red cabbage. When the main entree arrived the sauerbraten was so tough and stringy it got caught in all my teeth. The spaetzle was so small it reminded me of rabbit pellets. My grandmother made spaetzle all the time and it was wonderful. I left the table and complained to this blonde headed vamp at the door. She said she was the cook and said I was crazy and the sauerbraten had been marinating for 7 days and could not be touch nor stringy. I told her I wanted her to take my meal off the bill, she did do that. She was NOT pleased !!!! BAD RESTAURANT. I will never eat there again !!! I have eaten German food many years any and I know good German food. Cons: Service, food, and price more

Wish I Could Give It Zero Stars 7/28/2007

The service was extremely poor and the staff was unfriendly and rude. A couple members of our party had the wurst and sauerkraut, which was good. Others had the sauerbraten, which was very stringy and badly cooked. I suspect that the sausage and kraut may come from elsewhere, while they cook the entrees on site. The hostess also told us that she was ""the cook"" when we commented on the entrees, but we could see Hispanic workers actually doing the cooking when we peeked into the kitchen. It wasn't a happy experience, and we won't go back. more

Good food but Odd Service 7/25/2007

We discovered that you ordered at the counter and was given a number. The gentleman who took our order was very odd with zero personality. We were given a number and a lady delivered our food at the table. The food was very good but a little on the pricey side being it was for lunch. Probably will not return but have always wanted to try this place when in San Antonio. Pros: Good food Cons: Poor customer service; unfriendly more

Lovely change of pace 6/3/2007

Husband and I went for dinner and keep returning week after week. The food is great, very German (speaking as one who grew up on German food) and very flavorful. The bratwurst, roasted potatoes, and sauerkraut are truly homemade and delicious. Some times the service is a little slow but that's because there are only the two owners and one serving girl in attendance. It's a very small place which make the atmosphere wonderfully small and intimate with candles on all the tables and a great big picture window for you to sit by and enjoy the beautiful trees outside. Again, the food is great and the portions are such that you won't leave feeling hungry! The desserts are great as well! Pros: Ambience, value for money, food more

Positively wonderful bratwurst 2/11/2007

One evening I needed to get out of the apartment so I decided to try something new. I'd always seen it but never stopped in. I'm glad I decided to taxi in. \r \r The waiting time for a table was longer than average (I waited about 6 minutes) because they were inundated with customers just as I walked in. The owner herself seated me and apologized profusely for having to wait so long. \r \r I was seated in a quiet, dark corner as per my request and my candle was promptly lit. The lemonade I ordered was very fresh and promptly served in a frosty glass. Very tasty! \r \r I looked over the menu for about 10 minutes (the menu is small but still has some items to keep you second guessing yourself). \r \r After serious deliberation I chose the bratwurst with oven fried potatos and I must say that I was positively delighted with my choice. The bratwurst was so juicy and gently grilled served atop a bed of sweet, obviously fresh saurkraut. The oven fried potatos were addictive, its a shame they didn't give you more! \r \r That is the only place I have to fault this resturant, the portions are decent but for a hefty fellow they will not fill you up. I wasn't looking to be stuffed to the rafters, however. I was sated and happy. \r \r I highly recommend you give this restaurant a try! Pros: Friendly service, lively music, nice bakery Cons: A bit too dark, can take a little long to be seated. more

Great for something different 12/17/2006

My wife and I first tried this place after getting tired of the usual Mexican, Burgers, Steaks and BBQ. We've been regular visitors ever since. They have fantastic german beers on tap. The food is great and makes such a refreshing change from the usual stuff. Those oven fried potatoes are amazing!\r If you go on weekends (they're closed Sundays unfortunately) they have a very sweet waitress in a tradition dirndl (German dress) serve you. Sometimes during the week they have real German musicians.\r Pros: Good food. Smoking section. A refreshing change from typical faire. Cons: Not open Sundays. :-( more

Old World German Restaurant 12/12/2006

great German food and the atmosphere is a relaxed German environment 11/30/2006

My husband an I ate there by chance for an anniversary. The waitress was very pleasant and personable. She was more than willing to explain the menu selections and offer suggestions. She even had time to make small conversation with us. We felt quite at home. The atmosphere was a great as any German restaurant in Fredricksburg that we had tried. We didn't come on a day that the band was playing, sorry to say. But, we plan to go back when it is playing to eat and listen to some fantastic German music. Pros: great German atmosphere, great German food, nice family restaurant Cons: didn't come on a day that the band was playing more

Best German Food and Atmosphere in San Antonio! 8/16/2006

This is the best place in San Antonio to eat German food. The atmosphere is great the customer service is always great and the prices are fair also. The only drawback to this restaurant is the hours of operation are more convenient for the employees than the customers. I wish San Antonio had several more German restaurants to choose from. The other German restaurants are too small and have no parking. Pros: Thumbs way up for the food, service and ambiance of this restaurant. Cons: Hours of operation need to be extended for customers usage. more

Best German food in San Antonio. Great Service. Not crowded on Mon, Tues, Wed. 7/31/2006

I was hesitant to go there based on some previous bad reviews stated here. THEY WERE WRONG! Several friends in my complex recommended it, and THEY WERE RIGHT! I ate there on a Monday evening and they were not as busy as they said they are on the weekends. I had the Sauerbratten dinner and it was EXCELLENT---probably the best anywhere near San Antonio. The poritons were good size, not small as others have erroneously stated. The people there were very friendly and gave excellent service. I will go there again. more

It's good German food! 11/26/2005

In short, good German food & ambiance. To those who complain of small portions: it's OLD WORLD, not American super-size-me. The ambiance is perfect: cheesy German! With reasonable prices and patient waitresses in native dress, how can you complain? Pros: inexpensive Cons: small portions more

User review by ataris 8/23/2005

The person before me hit the nail on the head. I wish I had read the review before heading out to this restaurant. While the food was ""decent"" the waitstaff was amongst the worst in san antonio. Save some money on gas ---- don't go here. You'll leave disappointed. more

Worst Experience Ever ------ Very rude 8/18/2005

Allright, to all you people out there. Don't ever go to this establishment. The waiter REFUSED service to me, when I ordered a beer and it said on my ID Under 21 UNTIL 09-30-2003. Uh... he didn't look at my b-day. It looked like a simple mistake, but this man was the most horrible person I've come across in a long time. My boyfriend and I were so upset we left. I asked a girl working at the front couner to tell me how I am by looking at me id, she promptly said ""22"". This is a horrible place. There wasn't anyone there...you would think they might WANT to have customers. Didn't even get to try the food. Didn't look appetizing anyway. Pros: none. Cons: rude waitstaff more

Excellent Food, Atmosphere & Staff 6/14/2005

This is a must go if you enjoy good REAL german food. Excellent food, excellent service and staff. They really go out of their way to make you feel at home & take care of any and all needs. Excellent for a quick lunch or fine nite out. I have been visiting this rest since i came to texas & everyone I have recommened it to has really enjoyed it. Pros: Authentic German Food, Courteous Staff more

NOT WORTH YOUR TIME OR $$$ 5/24/2005

This place IS NOT a place to go, rude owners, and the food while taste OK is the smallest of portions the meat was hardly present mostly soup and mushrooms, made to look like a lot, but FAR FROM IT. I would NOT RECOMMEND the place to anyone, at anytime, for any reason.. Save your $$$ and go ANYWHERE ELSE. Cons: Little Portins, Not worth $$$, Rude Owners more
