Morton's The Steakhouse

I had never been to Morton's and I was excited about an opportunity to give it a try (August 2011). As I walked in I couldn't help but notice a crowded little bar on the right. They clearly needed more room but I am sure space is at a premium in downtown Nashville.\r \r The dining room was elegant and the service was outstanding. The explanation of the menu and all the options were clearly explained. For an appetizer, I ordered the fresh atlantic smoked salmon strips and they were very tasty! They didn't have a choice of salad dressings that I like for my salad but again I dismissed the problem as being one of my own pickiness. \r \r For the main meal I had chosen a porterhouse steak. I ordered it cooked medium and it came out without any pink in the middle. I was expecting a light pink center. My associate had ordered his steak cooked medium and it came out with a very bright red center. Curious as to how that happened but again I dismissed it as no big deal.\r \r Now the real problem. The whole purpose of going to Morton's was to enjoy a really good steak! Don't get me wrong....my steak was huge and very tender. However it was JUST a huge tender steak! It had no seasonings whatsoever other than some little hints of a light sauce. I was expecting to take a bite and be wowed like I was at Houston's years ago!! I have never forgotten that steak at Houston's! So, naturally I was very disappointed with a plain tasting steak. How could a steak house as well known as Morton's serve a plain steak? Maybe this is how some people prefer their steak. I was expecting much more.\r \r My meal was right at $100 and I had chosen to only have water to drink. I tip my hat to Morton's for great service and a tender steak but for that price I expected a much better tasting steak. Unfortunate to say that I will not be back. more

Being regulars at Morton's of San Diego, CA, my husband and I have dined at Morton's of Nashville twice this month. Each time, we spent well over $275. Our most recent visit was on 3/11/11 at 6:00 p.m. Each time we have visited the Nashville location, the restaurant has been relatively empty at 6:00 p.m. However, we have been seated at the WORST tables in the restaurant. The first time we visited the Nashville Morton's, we were sat at a small two-chair table on the corner of the main walkway. It was very annoying and un-romantic to say the least. Yesterday, we were sat at another two-chair table in an empty dining room. Mind you three other couples were seated in either roomy booths or four-seat tables. Our table was so small, the bread and two cocktails would hardly fit on our table. While the rest of the restaurant was dimly lit, our table was directly under brightly lit canned lights. Again, completely unromantic. Our steaks were decent, and the cocktails, salads, desert, and vegetable sides were as expected, but the ambience was so horrible it over-shadowed the meal. After spending well over $550 dollars in ONE MONTH trying to recreate the experience of our hometown beloved steakhouse, it is with great disappointment that I say we will not be back to Morton's Nashville. My seven year old daughter and I took my wife to celebrate her birthday. I asked for a booth upon making the reservation and received affirmation. I noted that my daughter is quite active around an open table. The Maitre D (Cory) took us into a nearly empty restaurant and seated us in the very middle of the floor. I kindly asked for any booth. He refused coldly. Upon my questioning all the open booths, he became belligerent and said they were reserved. We sat in the middle of the room, and watched the booth activity. The first group appeared to be friends of Cory and received the corner booth. Over the course of our 90 minute dinner, the booths were never filled to 100%. Two booths remained empty the entire time. They apparently call it VIP service...which in street terms equates to grease some palms if you want a booth...I wonder if this is known activity by Morton's. I've been going to Morton's for decades in every city and have never seen such poor treatment. I had wanted to dine at Morton’s for a long time. While on their web site, a coupon popped up: Dinner for 2 for $99. Awesome, right? Decided to take friend to dinner for her birthday. We were greeted with prompt, courteous valet service and a very nice host. They even made reference to her birthday. We were about 20 min. early and were seated immediately. The ambiance was wonderful. Very romantic. We noticed some of the waiters rolling the carts around showing their customers the cuts of meat, lobster, and other wonderful foods on display. Our waiter’s enthusiasm changed instantly, however, when I pulled out the coupon. We both even upgraded to ribeye. He pretty much ignored us except to get the specifics of our order. The salads and appetizers were great. The potatoes lyonnaise were decent. The green beans were barely cooked (not al dente) and tasteless. The steak was a thorough disappointment! I really had to question whether it was a ribeye, because there was NO marbling in it. Both were cooked to specification, but were dry as a bone. Mine was even medium, and the outer layer was almost crunchy it was so dry. After finishing our entrée, we waited for about 15 minutes and the waiter walked by us 3 times before finally acknowledging that we were ready for dessert. The couple one table over were also celebrating a birthday. Their waitress brought out a nice dessert with a candle, so I expected the same for my friend. Instead, the dessert that came with our meal was set down roughly and she was unenthusiastically told happy birthday. The dessert was good, but I can guarantee you I will never go back! I understand that waiters are more enthusiastic when someone can afford to drop 250-300 for a meal for two, but I can’t afford that quite yet. So, I was excited to have the coupon. And if the meal and the service had been all they should have been, when I finish my degree and CAN afford the regular prices, I undoubtedly would have returned – OFTEN. But as a result of the SNOBBISH attitude, the poor service, and the horrible steak, Morton’s has lost a minimum of 2 future regulars, as well as anyone else I can tell before I die. Little surprised by the price but it was a special occasion so i figured it was worth it. Both my husband and I got the smaller steaks just because we would never finish a monster one. Mine was the filet and it was just average - basically could compare it to a good steak at a cheap steak chain restaurant. My husbands was the ribeye and it was aweful. Full of fat and not even a good flavor what little meat there was. If it matters at this point, the service was very good. more

My husband and I went to Mortons for our 3 year wedding anniversary. My husband was able to book the reservation online which was really nice. We got there at 6:00 and were seated right away. One of the first things we noticed was it was very dimly lit. I guess its for ambiance but I just felt like they needed to turn some lights on. The server was very nice. He went over the different cuts of meat. We found on their website a steak and seafood special for 2 for $99.00. Which when we got there we realized was a tremendous deal. The filet itself was $37.50 and each side which we got 2 were $10.00 each. It also came with salad and dessert. The salads were salads, nothing too special. The steak wasn't the best we had ever had. I'm not big on seafood so I won't comment on it. We had the mashed potatoes and asparagus as sides. The mashed potatoes were bland and asparagus was good. For dessert we both had the Morton's Legendary Hot Chocolate Cake. It was nice and warm and gooey. I hate to say it but it was similar to but wasn't as good as Chili's Molten Chocolate Cake.\r Pros: Very nice, classy place for a special occassion Cons: The special we ordered was a good deal but probably not the best food they have. more

Mortons is really a great night out! My wife and I went this weekend and we both thought we experienced one of the best dinners we have ever had! The steak was absolutely the best.not to mention the salad and desserts. I also did a search on their web site and found a coupon for 99.00 that offered everything from start to finish. (except the drinks!).\r I think the alcohol costs would actually be the only negative about the entire evening. The cost of wine and drinks are considerably higher than any other dining experience. \r We managed to escape for just under $200.00 but we felt like the occational visit was worth the cost.\r \r Much better experience than some of the other highly recommended places for steak and seafood in town.. Atmosphere is a little dark but acceptable.. Pros: Excellent dinner, great staff! Cons: Cost of wine and alcohol considerably higher than other resturants in town more

Nothing compares to Morton's in my experience. The steaks are great (be careful not to be too enthusiastic in ordering ""char"" on the outside or they will come nuked). The shrimp Alexander is a GREAT first course. The crab cocktail, despite its simplicity is utterly perfect. Tomato with a fantastic blue cheese dressing is sublime. And of course...the molten chocolate cake is off the charts (and the apple pie ain't bad either). \r \r I can't imagine how Ruth's Chis is mentioned in the same breath as Mortons. To quote Larry Holmes, it couldn't carry Morton's jockstrap. Pros: The best steakhouse in existence. Period Cons: It's not cheap...but worth every penny more

Morton's is definitely worth it. It has the best steaks in Nashville, very generous portions and an incredible atmosphere. They opened their new Bar 12-21 in June. Before I wasn't a big fan of Morton's Bar, but with the new Bar 12-21, my opinion has completely changed. Bar 12-21 is a great place to have some drinks and you'll probably see some of Nashville's best there. Insider's tip: Be sure to check out the bar at 5:00 ? 6:30 p.m. and from 9:30 to 11:00 p.m. because most menu items in Morton?s Bar 12-21 are just $4.00. This includes Mini Cheeseburgers, Petite Filet Mignon Sandwiches, Chicken Goujonettes, Crab, Spinach & Artichoke Dip and Blue Cheese French Fries.\r \r I highly recommend Morton's for the best steaks, drinks (try a trademark Mortini) and as a great place to be seen. more

We went here a couple of weeks ago for our first wedding anniversary. Everything was fantastic. The service and the food were all top quality (each ordered a salad, filet, and had dessert). The restaurant was actually fairly small (maybe half the size of a typical chain restaurant), which made for a quieter, less hectic atmosphere. I also would not worry about a dress code, the reservations desk said business casual, but while we were I would say 65% were in jeans and a button down shirt (more like Friday business casual). The only thing that was strange is that they cut me off after 4 beers. My wife was the designated driver and was not drinking at all, and 4 beers is not a lot. First off, I have eaten at Morton's on several occasions before and had great meals. This the third time Feb 23rd was not one of them. Let me also say that the entire meal was not totally mediocre. Let me start with the negative. Obviously my main reason to ever going to Morton's is for their filet. I always order mine prepared medium. The steak arrived very dark on the outside and cold and bloody on the inside. I then sent the steak back. It arrived twice as black on the outside with no change of color nor temp on the inside. I have eaten steaks at numerous restaurants from Bones (Atlanta), Chop House (Chicago) and Morton's here in Nashville, I know what a medium steak should look like. I asked the waiter if this was there typical medium and she replied yes and went about her business. She could obviously tell I was not pleased with it. For a $200 meal for two, I would expect better service. Now on to the remainder of the meal. I also had the Crab Legs. These were excellent and possibly the best I have ever had. The Morton's salad is always excellent as well. The wine was nice, and as usual the atmosphere was great. Being that I frequent these types of steakhouses for the filet and the fact it was extremely disappointing, I am giving this visit an average rating. This was one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville, but I will probably not be going back for a while now. As for steaks in the Nashville area, I have still yet to have a bad or disappointing experience at Flemings and still reign it king of the filet in Nashville. I'll admit at the outset that I've always been mystified at the price of good steakhouses. Sure, the beef is high quality, but I can buy high quality beef and prepare it well myself. The other offerings on the menu are normally very boring, and the experience often doesn't seem worth the price. \r \r Eating at Morton's last night with my wife has only reinforced this view. I had a $100 gift card and was deliberating beforehand whether to get a bottle of wine (and more or less use up the card) or have just a couple of glasses (and reserve some of the card for a future visit). When we first saw the prices, I realized how foolish the question had been. The wine list is an aboslute joke. Morton's sells bottles of wine that cost $15 in a store (such as Estancia pinot noir) for some $50--and that is the cheapest bottle you will find. I have never seen markup quite this bad. I didn't get any wine, and my wife and I had the least expensive steaks on the menu, single cut filets. These were good, but I can't say they were worth $31 a piece a la carte.\r \r Even people with enough disposable income to eat at Morton's should retain some sense of value for your dollar. To that end, why not save the money for a dinner at Morton's and have two fantastic dinners at Cafe Margot? We went back at the weekend with high expectation and what a waste of $250.00 for two. The Maitre'D had his back to the incoming guests while checking them in on a snazzy computerized screen, and we waited to be seated even with a reservation. \r \r The restaurant was oversold or understaffed, one of the 2, as we did not have good service. It was incredibly loud, no atmosphere whatsoever, and when we did get our entrees we had to send one back as it was cooked wrong. \r \r We travel a lot and experience a lot, and if this is the best we can expect in Nashville we are deeply saddened. Also, what ever happened to the dress code, and when going out and spending hundreds meant dressing up and looking the part, people in sandals and beach shorts in a fine restaurant? What are they thinking?\r \r I can honestly say I would rather have spent $40.00 in Shoneys, Mortons needs to raise its game, or lower its prices and start selling tacos' \r more

I went to Morton's several weeks ago with some friends and family for my husband's birthday. I have to say that this place does not fail to impress. The food and wine were fabulous and that atmosphere very cozy and elegant. The service was also top notch. Everyone at out table just raved about everything! I would recommend this for anyone and will be back. I do have to agree with the previous poster that the dress code could be enforced a little better. Excellent food. Excellent service. I only have one recommendation-ENFORCE A DECENT DRESS CODE!!! When I spend over $300 on dinner for two, I do not want to have to see a couple that looks like they just came from a guest appearance on Jerry Springer make out the entire time they are in the restaurant. Most people were appropriately dressed, but Morton's should help keep the wildlife in the zoo. Other than that, it was an excellent restaurant. The wife and I have visited Morton's for several years and have had numerous pleasant experiences. A very nice night out with the wife, enjoying service, food and wine. I chose this establishment to celebrate our duaghter's, we have two, 16th and 18th birthday... simply a night out with dad. I'll never forget the dinning experience the girls left with, a true experiencial evening that each still share. Steaks, and Seafood are excellent, however, the complements are quite expensive. Service has always been exceptional. Tables are located somewhat too close and atmosphere may become somewhat loud if wishing to have a quite dinner with the wife. Be prepared that someone close to you may light up a cigar, and what a way to destroy a meal. Pros: great Steaks, Great Seafood, Great Service Cons: Cigar Smoke, Loud, Expensive side dishes more
