thanks to Mojave i am now a fan of the soutwest.. 6/17/2008

While visiting a friend in Astoria we went to eat at MOJAVE, It was so good we ate there twice! Dinner the first night and lunch the following day. Mojave definition of southwest cooking is like no other. While not a huge fan of the southwest faire their recipes brought a higher respect of that region of cooking. I only wish they would open a restaurant in the Boston area. I recommend you to order a few plates so to sample different dishes! Excellent, perfect, and close to heaven with just the right amount of heat: 5 stars!\r \r Pros: food service Cons: not in boston more

GREAT FOOD, AWESOME SERVICE 5/24/2008

I go to this joint since middle of february, i love the food and i know all the waiters. It's a great addition to astoria and since i moved from manhattan i always find difficulties find good places in astoria. This place feels like manhattan, great ambience, high quality food for decent prices, will keep coming at mojave for a long time. Pros: good food, great ambience Cons: tiny bathrooms more

Good Ambience, LIVE MUSIC, good food 5/23/2008

I probably walked in front of this place 100 times and always wanted to try it, but never did. I went last tueasday to the battle of the burgers at astoria manor and by coincindence i bumped into their stand. I tried the chix quesadilla along with the carnita (delicious) and tried their sangria. WOW...... seriously.. amazing... I felt bad i never gave thsi restaurant a chance, it never appealed to me, but thursday i went with my girlfriend, and we sat in the front, with the latino band. i really enjoyed the night and along came other 4 friends, we stayed there 3 hours.. they bought us 1 round of margaritas and a tasting of tequila... i was hammered but the next day i got up like nothing happened.. i guess the real tequila does that..\r \r thank you MOJAVE, great staff, funny, friendly and aslo good food, I joined city serach just to write this review.. sorry i never gave them a chance Pros: enjoable atmosphere Cons: little bit overpriced for astoria i think more

Love the atmosphere and margaritas. The quesadillas? Not so much. 5/18/2008

A friend of mine visiting from Boston wanted to try this joint as it was close to my apartment, yet had a Manhattan feel to it. The ambiance was fantastic. I loved the interior decor. The wooden ceiling facade was a visual delight. We ordered frozen strawberry margaritas, the shrimp quesadilla, and crab quesadilla. The margaritas were pretty good. They were truly frozen and thick, which allowed you to sip and enjoy them at your leisure without them melting. The quesadillas were so-so...and definitely not worth $13. I wasn't a fan of the mediocre presentation (thrown on a plate with a haphazard dollup of sour cream, salsa, and guac in the center.) Both were overly salted and way too fishy tasting. The shrimp did not have a good texture...they tasted frozen, store bought, and over cooked. The crab was a little better, but the overpowering aroma of fishiness just about ruined it for me. I'd go back for the margaritas. I'd never order another quesadilla from here, though. Pros: Atmosphere, decor, margaritas, clean, good service Cons: Food isn't a good value more

fantastic CINCO DE MAYO 5/7/2008

It's funny how i really never noticed this place coming off the subway, but monday night it couldnt be missed. They had a very festive theme with ballons stretched accross the sidewalk, and a live band next to window. my frined and i decided to give it a try, also because they had a free margarita with your meal. we waited around 20 minutes next to the bar, which was overcrowded by people partying. we had our free blueberry margaritas and then got seated. The food was really good, and the service was really nice considering they were jammed with a line of people outside the door. Nice green theme with t-shirts and menus and the rest. they explained us that they raised the prices a little bit because of the live band, but considering the free margarita, and the free shot of their organic tequila it was really cheap, we spent around 30 each with the tip. will definately be back and will bring my friend. The manager also told us that maybe they are going to have a cinco de mayo every thursday night, with a live band. If that's the case i know where i will be heading right after the office.... GOOD JOB mojave... Pros: fantastic ambience Cons: little bit overpriced but worthed the extra dollar more

Awesome Cinco de Mayo 5/7/2008

So two friends and I hopped in right before the big rush on Cinco de Mayo. This southwestern hot spot just did that. Flavor pairings were very creative... shrimp tacos with corn and asparagus. Not only did they offer free margaritas but also free tequila shots for the occasion. They were quite packed given the night however they still delivered. Prices were a little high and portions a little small. Their ""hand hacked"" guacamole was amazing but they could have offered a slightly larger portion. We all ordered tacos as they were in the 15-17 dollar range, however my friend received two while everyone else received three tacos we confronted the waitress. Not only did she explain the methodology to their portions but offered us more food from the menu. We ended up sharing and having enough food but the wait staff was quite accommodating for such a busy night. The live band was great and the huge open windows is an astoria essential. Pros: Accomodating, friendly staff, amazing food Cons: prices, portions more

BEST SANGRIA.... 5/5/2008

After reading the reviews about this restaurant, since i live few blocks away i decided to try it out. I am a sangria aficionado, and i have tried sangria in the most popular mexican places in the city, Dos caminos, Rosa mexicana, Maya, and so on. \r I have to tell you, the sangria here was really the best i ever tried, simple as that. It's worthed the trip alone. Plus the food is good too. saturday they were packed with a young croud, like my age, 35. I am glad i gave it a try, will be back for more sangria soon.... Pros: BEST SANGRIA Cons: can't take it home with me... :( more

firt time... definately not the last one 4/27/2008

I was there saturday night with a big group, 16 people. We were seated immeditely even if the restaurant was packed. Food was good and service excellent. It was my first time and definately not the last one... Pros: young atmosphere Cons: bar in the back more

kick Aass sangria 4/26/2008

Just wanted to say that i am glad this place opened in astoria. it's near my house and they really have an excellent sangria. I usually get the pitcher which comes with a lot of fres soaked fruit, i eat the fruit too but it's soo addictive. Service is good, but by the time i am done eating i am soo HAPPY that i really don't pay attention. Seriously, the best damn sangria EVER... Pros: good food and ambience in astoria Cons: addictive sangria, should be prescribed by a doctor more

saving the earth.... 4/23/2008

I live in astoria since 2003 and mojave is one of my 3 usual restaurants that i eat at least every week. My wife and I are both vegetarian and GREEN, and we found out that also the owner of mojave are trying hard to save the earth. Not only the food is good and the service got really much better from the beginning, but we feel that a restaurant that replies to emails, buys organic products and tryes hard to recycle and uses natural producs really deserves to be a success. And i feel this is the case of MOJAVE, nearly after only 3 months they are part of the astoria community. Good job and welcome to the ASTORIA... keep up the good work, me and my wife are big fan and supporters... Pros: awesome sangria.... :) Cons: under the subway.... more

Authentic Southwestern 4/23/2008

I've lived in Astoria for about two years now, and already Mojave is one of my top three favorite restaurants in the area (along with Sakura and Fatty's, both on Ditmars). So far, I've been here three times. The first was on Valentine's Day this year with my wife. The place was PACKED, but we were miraculously seated right away at a great spot in the center of the front half of the place. Anyway, we tried the buffalo fried oysters, the short ribs (wicked tender), and the sea scallops, along with a pitcher of sangria (unfortunately, the fruit isn't soaked in grappa), and a jalapeno mojito (not for the weak of tastebuds). Everything was delicious. The service was a tad bit slow, of which I was warned via other reviews. The second and third times we went there, we had quesadillas, which are on average nearly ten bucks cheaper than the entrees, yet just as filling. I HIGHLY recommend the blue crab quesadilla. Also, I'm happy to say, the last two times we've been there, the service has sped up significantly. Still, if you're not one for waiting too long, I recommend placing your appetizer/dinner orders along with your drink orders, which should be made upon the first visit the server attends to the table. Otherwise, you may be left feeling a little neglected. Honestly, though, it's gotten a lot better there, service-wise. The owner actually reads online reviews and takes suggestions (i.e. additions to the beer selection).\r Pros: Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere, great location, great prices Cons: Service improving, music is a little too loud and of the ""club"" variety more

like in albuquerque 4/22/2008

Had dinner saturday nights with some friends. My friends are from albuquerque, NM and because i am from AUSTRALIA the wanted me to try their homestyled food, southwestern. The restaurant is really well designed, and the food was interesting and delicious iwth big portions. I had the Serrano Ham quesadilla and my friends also had some other quesadillas. They were really delicious. Service was also really good and fast, our waiter was casey, and he was a caracter, funny with a new york accent and very friendly . \r Just visiting new york for a few weeks but wanted to point out this restaurant, my friend swear is like eating in albuquerque, and while never been there i really believe them. the eat there every week. before leaving will go back. Pros: atmosphere & service Cons: very big portions, i hate to waste food more

great brunch 4/22/2008

went there for brunch on sunday, and we sat near the window, it was a beautiful day. Food was delicious, service very friendly and fast, and my food was made to order. The subway didn't bother me at all, well i am a metropolist so i am used to live in big cities. We really enjoyed our uevos rancheros, A MUST and also we had 2 mojitos ""also made to order""\r Service in every time i have been there, more than 10 is always been good.\r Will be back more

Food is not made to order! 4/18/2008

We ordered the swordfish and other appetizers and they arrived less than five minutes after placing our order. We barely were able to enjoy our drinks and the atmosphere, if we wanted fast food we would have gone next door to McDonalds. It was warm outside and they opened the door and windows which was OK, but because this restaurant is so close the subway-- every time the train pulled up we felt distracted by the noise. It was like we were dining on the subway platform. There was also issues with the bill. The waitress added the tip (by mistake) to our bill. The atmosphere is fine, but this restaurant clearly has a lot of work to do. We will not be going back. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: unexcusable bad service more

great sangria 4/5/2008

Wow.... I went yesterday, For the first time, and the restaurant look very good..The food and the service was great..... compliments at the staff more

fun place to be.... 4/4/2008

I have been in mojave already 5-6 times and never had a complaint. food is good and not too expensive, drinks are good (i like the sangria a lot) i will be spending my summer drinking it for sure. and the service is very friendly, not cold like in some other places. Bartenders are really frindly and they chat with me everytime i sit at the bar, the waiters are nice and the manager is really funny... he makes me laugh every time i am there... (maybe is the sangria)\r I would reccomand this place to people that want to try southwerstern cuisine. Pros: fun & friendly... Cons: bar in back.... more

cultural travel... 4/3/2008

I was eating in Mojave sunday night with my friend. i am not really into mexican food but my best friend wanted me to try it because he explained to me that is not mexican but southwestern, ok?!?! like i know the difference?? being my first experience with tex-mex food i was very confused by some of the menu items.. I grilled the waiter with 1000 questions about the menu, and he explained all of them. I am glad my friend took me here. I had the serrano ham quesadilla, and it was sooo delicious... the waiter explained to me that serrano ham it means that it's a mountain pig ham.. from spain.. and also explained me that succotash it's a native american indian dish.. I am russian so for me was really interesting learning this things.. \r Service was really friendly and down to earth, it made me feel really confortable.. I liked the sangria very much.. definately will be back.... Pros: cheap and tasty Cons: not a waitng area more

Overpriced for what you get 3/9/2008

This is a very nice looking restaurant in Astoria which is tastefully decorated.\r \r I visited on a Sunday afternoon around 3 pm and thought the place was quiet and appealing. The atmosphere is nice and the service decent by New York standards. The menu is very short, without many options. The entree was small for thirteen dollars and my beer was served warm. I was told that the beer delivery had just gotten there and was offered ice. No frosted mug, no colder beer, and no discount (still cost me five fifty) a lot for a warm beer.\r \r I didn't find the food bad, just not outstanding. Not really a good value for the price.\r \r Pros: Decor, service, margarita Cons: Price, Menu selection more

Avoid on Friday nights 3/7/2008

Pleasant Southwest atmosphere. Conveniently located. Food was great ? we had the Black Angus Fajitas and the Mojo Swordfish. The margaritas were light on the tequila which was quickly remedied when brought to the attention of the waiter. (thank you, Susan) especially since the restaurant was near full capacity. We will definitely go back and will tell our friends! more

like in santa fe..... 2/26/2008

The staff very friendly and attentive, and everybody around us was really having fun and enjoying the atmosphere, which is the most important thing in a restaurant.... will definately go back... Pros: nice atmoshphere Cons: travel to astoria more
