Service Sucked big time, Food was good 6/21/2009

Food was really good and decor was great, but for the very same reason as below review, the waiter being a rump, we would never go back!!! Howard, our server, was indeed the pretentious, obnoxious rump that the previous review was complaining about. He was sarcastic, obnoxious, and an idiot that obviously had his head flushed down the toilet too many times in high school. When asked which salad he prefers, he made comments like, If you don't like endives, you will not like our endive salad. Thank you, genius. When asked if a cheese is pasteurized, he made some sarcastic comment about how unpasteurized cheese is illegal (it's restricted, not illegal). Then when desert was served, he made some snicker comment about how the ice-cream was unpasteurized, and if that was a deal breaker for me? He deliberately served us slow. Took an hour to clear our plates. We were there from 6-9:30 for a three course meal. Forgot our coffee. Normally all that wouldn't have really bothered us if our server was pleasant, as we are pretty easy going and $h!T happens. But his pompous obnoxious attitude sucked. Pros: food Cons: Howard, the smug and insulting waiter more

server was so rude, we left 3/26/2009

I really wanted to try the food at Louisiana, but unfortunately we didn't stay long enough to try it. There was one server (Howard, try to avoid him) working that night, and he was pretentious and made us feel awkward from the moment we walked in the door. We ordered a bottle of wine, and he asked for our IDs. I'm 24 and my boyfriend is 28, but I didn't bring anything with me, so I didn't have my ID. He told us he wouldn't serve us because, in his words, I look like I'm 12. I was so offended, we left immediately and went to The Wine Market in Locust Point instead, which was great! I will probably never go to Louisiana again, and if I do, I would specifically ask for any server besides Howard. Although, judging from some other reviews I've read, I wouldn't count on the service being great anyway. Pros: atmosphere Cons: service more

Worst Service in Baltimore 2/15/2009

With four star prices, you would expect four star service. Unfortunately, at Louisiana this is not their priority. This is by far the worst service I have received in Baltimore. Yes, it was Valentine's Day, I gave them leniency. But, when you order a $100 bottle of wine and it take the server at least 20 minutes to bring it to your table there is a problem. Our server was rude, and dishonest. We had a $25 gift certificate, for which he ignored and charged us the full amount and played stupid when confronted. \r \r Shrimp and grits, delicious, very authentic. Unfortunately, these are not compelling enough for me to come back to endure that kind of service. Skip Louisana and head to Charleston, it is worth the extra money to be treated like a guest instead of a second class citizen. Pros: Shrimp and Grits Cons: Service, Price, Parking more

Worth every bucks. 8/13/2008

Really like the atmosphere, very romantic and elegant. Food was excellent, we had black angus filet mignon and slow cooked duck, it was very tender. We didn't have any problem like the other reviewer. \r Staff was very professinal. Overall we've enjoyed every moment and we would like to go there again. more

Disappointed Diners 5/17/2008

My husband and I dined at Louisiana this past weekend, it was our first and only visit. \r When we arrived we were greeted by a smug host. From there we were promptly seated. We started w/ a bottle of wine, it was delicious. The wine list is slightly more extensive than average for what you typically find in Baltimore. However, the wines by the glass did not provide you w/ any information other than the type of wine they were offering (ie ? Cab Sav, Pinot Noir) We ordered a salad and appetizer to share and it was very disappointing that both dishes came out at the same time, when clearly the salad should have been presented first. We started w/ the beet salad, it was good but nothing to rave about. We moved on to the shrimp and grits ? it was delicious. This was the highlight of the evening. We then each had our meals, but it was a 20+ minute wait from appetizer to dinner. I had the duck, it was very tough. And my husband had the catfish, it was incredibly fishy. We do not eat red meat or pork so there were very limited options for us to choose from. The atmosphere is unique, but it almost feels like it should be a wedding reception venue as opposed to romantic dining. I also noticed cobwebs in the corners of the ceilings and hallways (not decorations, but real spider webs.) All in all, this is a restaurant we will cross off our list.\r more

Well kept secret for now! 3/29/2007

One of the best food experiences in a long time was Louisiana's on Thursday March 22, 2007. While spending a few days at a Conference in Baltimore, we had dinner there at the recommendation of a friend. The food was so fabulous we returned to have lunch the next day only to find it serves dinner only. The escargot appetizer that I had was sumptious, baked in a perfect phyllo crust! My guest had the special which was a sweet potato soup, a perfect appetizer for the crusted catfish entree that followed. I ordered the gumbo and asked for the famous ""grits"" substitution instead of rice. Grits have never tasted so good! The atmosphere was wonderful and when our orginal seats had to be moved because we were in an area where a party room had been requested, we were moved and given a choice of a complimentary wine or dessert. The servers were personable and knowledgable, the food was first rate and trust me -- I'll be driving the 35 miles from Washington to Baltimore more often just for Louisiana's! Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere more

is this really one of the best restaurants in Baltimore? 2/21/2007

My husband and I traveled from Philly to spend a weekend in Baltimore, and we made Saturday night reservations here because we read that it was one of the best restaurants in Baltimore. From the beginning, things went wrong. We had a reservation for 9pm, and weren't seated until 9:45. While we waited at the bar for 45 minutes, the hostess didn't apologize once, explain what the delay was, or even offer to check our coats! [The bartender did give us a free drink, though, which was good]. \r \r When we were finally seated in the dining room (which was inexplicably half-empty, even though we were forced to sit at the bar for 45 minutes), we were seated at a small table in a dark corner, even though it was the end of the night and there were better tables available. \r \r The food was not very good. My husband got a salad with what was supposed to be a parmesan cracker, but the cracker was sour, bitter and just awful -- it didn't even taste like food. I told the waitress that there was something seriously wrong with the cracker, and she might want to tell the chef to make sure they didn't serve it to anyone else, and she responded that it was ""a toasted parmesan cracker, and that's the way that it tastes when they cook it."" Who knows if she ever told the chef, because we never got an apology or even any acknowledgment of the complaint. \r \r The issues that we had with the food and the service were so bad that I assume that someone important must have called out sick that night. But still, the mark of a good restaurant (and one of the reasons why you pay so much to go to them) is how the staff and managers work to make sure that you have the best experience possible even when things don't go as planned. Louisiana certainly failed in this respect. Pros: Nice decor Cons: Service, food more

Don't Bother 1/28/2007

After spending the past five years in Alabama with frequent trips to New Orleans, I was excited to fulfill my cravings of fried green tomatoes and crawfish. To be fair, I in now way expected my dining experience to be like my previous excursions along Bourbon Street and willing to look over the ""crayfish"" on the menu, however, I did expect good service and good food. Unfortunately, the experience did not include either one. First, the wait staff was pretty slow and unprofessional; not only did I get an eyeful of my waitress's pink bra it also took quite a while for her to wait on us despite the fact we were the only couple in her section. Second, the bread basket was full of toasted and some even burned bread (a little trick serve old, stale bread?). \r \r Grant it, these small annoyances are petty within the grand scheme of things and perhaps alone would not have made my dining experience so disappointing, yet the fact that they were out of a couple of main ingredients on the menu made the experience incredibly frustrating. With such a limited menu, how can they be out of green tomatoes, or for that matter, anything on the menu? \r \r Overall, the food was not too bad, but certainly not great and far from exceptional. If you want a nice Cajun meal, don' bopther and save the $$$$ and fry your own catfish. more

crawfish 12/10/2002

I am a native of CAJUN country, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans area. Crawfish boils, Mardi Gras, warm weather and very nice southern people. This restaurant reminds me somewhat of the atmosphere I miss most. One mistake people, we call them Crawfish not Crayfish, keep it real folks. more

Wonderful 10/28/2002

There is nothing that I could say that would begin to descibe this place. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to take someone out for a romantic dinner. Sit upstairs by the window sill if possible. Your sight line will give you the beautiful row homes. You will almost forget the busy street below. more
