Great food - great service 1/31/2008

We happened upon this place by accident - had heard of it but weren't planning to go - on an off night (Wednesday). First and foremost, the service was great. Not snobbish while not fake as happens all too often. I always feel uncomfortable when the wait staff kisses up. Our waiter was very down-to-earth and knowledgeable. The wine list appeared to have a number of reasonably-priced wines - we found something very nice without having to splurge. Our salad and entrees were wonderful - great attention to detail and all flavors worked remarkably well together. For the record, we had the butter lettuce salad, roasted butternut squash agnolotti and the stuffed trout (onion, mushroom and bacon), and were treated with a free taste of the fries with paprika and aioli, which were outstanding as well. All in all, this is probably the overall best restaurant experince we've had in some time, and I'm frankly surprised that I'm saying that as we've had a lot of great experiences (and some not so great!). Go here. Eat well. Be happy. Pros: Great service, fantastic food Cons: None more

Finally a restaurant that lives up to the hype! 6/26/2007

I've been meaning to try JP's for quite sometime now after reading and hearing so many great things about the place. Working in fine dining myself, I am a bit of a critic and not easily impressed. I have to say that it was a truly great dining experience and everything that came out of the kitchen was a masterpiece. The attention to detail and pairing of the ingredients were obviously the work of a very talented chef. In addition, the service was friendly, knowledgeable and actually matched the quality of the food- which in itself seems to be an impressive feat for most high end restaurants. Great experience and a place that I will definitely visit again! Pros: Convenient Parking, Incredible food and Great service Cons: Nothing more

Great Food and even Better Service! 3/18/2007

I dined at jP's this past weekend with a group of girlfriends, we chose the bar area, it's great people watching on Lyndale! We were greeted with a friendly and outgoing server who walked us thru the specials and made reccomendations for wine and cocktails. Two words: "Bone Crusher". That made my night. We ordered a spread of appetizers and everything was fantastic! The calamari, very lightly breaded was to die for. We had the pizza of the evening and jp's rustic pizza and wow... ten inches of heaven on a plate! I would highly recommend jP's for any occasion. I will be back many times. Pros: Great food, great service, ample parking great servers and bartenders Cons: none. more

Best Bistro in Minneapolis 2/2/2007

This place was wonderful. The scallops were tender and flavorful, the duck was simply the best, not gamey or greasy as we have had in the past at other places claiming to specialize in wild game! The wine list is impressive and we enjoyed ourselves so much we had to pass on dessert in order to make our show...the waiter was aware of our show time and graciously sent us off with truffles to go... absolutely the best birthday present I could have asked for that evening....the service, the food, the atmosphere was and is a great place for a romantic evening. IMHO, enjoy yourself and your time at JP's. Pros: Service, Food, Wine, Ambience Cons: none more

Creative Food romantic and Relaxed setting 12/13/2006

Great bartenders make some strong and tastey drinks. I always feel comfortable here if I'm wearing jeans or all dressed up to go to a show next door at the Jungle. Pros: good service Cons: ? parking? more

BEST FOOD AND SERVICE IN MINNEAPOLIS! 10/30/2006

I ate here with a group of friends last night and had the best experience. The service was great - the staff was friendly, efficient and professional. The food was amazing! We started with the fried italian flatbread with honey and blue cheese, the calamari, and jp's rustic pizza. Our entrees included the rib-eye, the pork chop, the trout, the gnocchi and diver scallops. We shared everything and enjoyed every bite. Our waiter walked us through the wine list and made some great recommendations (and pointed out the great wine deals on the list). Dessert was also a highlight - the mole cake was our favorite. I highly recommend jp's - a definite find! Pros: great food and service, warm and inviting atmosphere Cons: ????? more

Excellent food, not so great service 10/23/2006

I dined here on a Thursday evening. It wasnt very busy, our server, while very nice was preoccupied with other tables. We waited for nearly 25 minutes between ordering our bottle of wine and actually taking our food order. The food was phenomenal though! My date and I had the chicken and the trout, both excellent. If you are looking for a leisurely meal, since the service is so slow, its a great place to go. Pros: Excellent food, wine list Cons: Slow service more

Impressive!! 5/14/2006

Went for an early dinner just recently to jP American Bistro and was impressed with pretty much everything. Atmosphere was upscale yet comfortable. Service was very attentive and personable. The food was wonderful!! Our table had calamari, a pizza, a house salad, hangar steak, ahi tuna, and a wonderful dessert. The bread was wonderful also!! In all, I don't really have a bad thing to write about this place. I don't like the white marble in the bar. Pros: Food, Service Cons: Parking, Marble in bar, restrooms downstairs more

JP's has the best food in the Twin Cities 4/25/2006

Went on a Saturday night and my reservations were messed up (my fault) but they were very gracious about it. The food was the best I've had in the Twin Cities. I had the Hangar Steak and my date had the Veal Chop. Perfectly cooked and the service was outstanding. A definite new favorite for me. Pros: Excellent service, Great Food Cons: Street parking, or pay lot more

Fantastic! 4/10/2006

I dined here with my boyfriend on a Sunday evening and was very pleasantly surprised with just about everything. We shared the mixed greens salad with manchego and it was full of flavor. My entree, the ahi tuna, was the best I've ever had! For dessert, we shared the chocolate molten cake! Our server was attentive and informative. On Sunday and Monday evenings, bottles of wine are 1/2 off--a great deal! We will be back to enjoy the cuisine again soon! Pros: Attentive waitstaff, Incredible food, Romantic atmosphere more

Just fabulous 4/5/2006

This is where my fiance proposed, and everything about the evening was great! Our waiter was exceptional. My fiance snuck off and gave him the ring, and when he brought it out (pretending it was a dessert) it was on a silver tray decorated with fresh fruit and flowers. The food was great as well - sophisticated flavor combinations and pretty good portion sizes. There's also a parking lot in park right behind the restaurant which is inexpensive. I can't wait to go back! Pros: excellent service, delicious food, good parking Cons: none, none, none! more

Wonderful Food, Fabulous Service! 11/10/2005

What an enjoyable dining experience! From the tartare of tuna with shallots, lemon-pressed olive oil and fleur de sel, served with baby arugula to the sweet-glazed salmon served over crispy haricot-verts swimming in a deep, earthy, soy/espagnole? sauce, the undeniably cooked-to-perfection, tender hangar steak hiding roasted grapes in yet another impressive sassy sauce, to the deep, after-dinner cafe noir (Morning Star African blend - YUM!) - - - only the service surpassed the wonderful things brought to our table. Perhaps the one thing needed @ JP's is more and larger artwork throughout the dining room- - - filled with vast, expansive walls of plain, painted brick - - - but such a small thing, easily-overlooked, in comparison to our gastronomic nirvana experience. Absolutely recommended, and will most definitely return! Pros: Romantic/cozy, Amazing food, Wonderful service more

Staff remembers you 10/8/2005

I have gone to JP's several times. Every time memorable. I brought my girlfriend in once and I introduced her to Carl "Host". The next time we went in about a month and a half later. We walked in without reservations and he said "Hey! Tim & Jocelyn, How are you?!! That kind of memory and the impeccable food (salmon appetizer) make JP's my top pick for Uptown. Say hello to Andrew as well. The best bartender in town! Pros: Superb Food, Staff, Best Mohito's Cons: Not a single one, Park in back more

Sunday's the only day! 8/1/2005

Get to this place lickity split. If you're up and about on Sunday, they have 1/2 price bottles of wine - on a pretty decent wine list, if you can believe that! Some particularly nice pinots, i remember. And the calamari is a must. more

Great place for a hot date 7/11/2005

The food was superb as was the service. Tried a sampler plate of fruit & cheese for the appetizer - included some oven-roasted grapes that were delicious. J had a pasta dish she loved - don't remember which one and I had New York cut served on a bed of vegetables with oven roasted potatoes on the side. The seasoning on the steak complimented the meat beautifully and the vegetables were exactly done (not under, not over). Great service on top of that and the bar made martinis almost as well as I do. Pros: Creative menu, Excellent kitchen, Service Cons: Parking, Slightly spendy more

User review by trixym2609 7/10/2005

I am so pleased to see all the great reviews that JP deserves! I have been in the industry for quite some time. I have had the opportunity to work with a number of great chef's including him. Not only is he talanted but, he is a hard worker and a really great guy. Whenever I come in he is cooking on the line and overseeing everything if he isn't personally preparing your meal. He still has the same employees he opened his resaurant with because, he treats them respect and values them. The bottom line is he cares about his product, customers and his staff. I suggest everyone support this restaurant! I know I will! Tracy Pros: food, staff, wine list more

Great dining experience 6/7/2005

My partner and I went to JP's for his birthday. We had heard good things about the place, and had never been there, so we decided to try it. We both loved it. The food was wonderful - from the calamari appetizers to the Thai beef kebabs to the interesting desserts. Our server was very friendly and attentive as well. We've been to most of the fine restaurants in town, and we thought JPs was a very good value for the Twin Cities. Overall, it was a great dining experience. more

Fantastic! 6/6/2005

Everything about JP's is fabulous - the service (from host to waitstaff to bartender), the wine, and ooh the food! What a great menu, it changes seasonally and is some of the best stuff you'll find anywhere. The calamari is my absolute favorite. My husband and I have been here several times and I've never experienced sticker shock from the menu prices. Of course, like most restaurants of this caliber you're going to see some pricier dishes, but I've always seen great items for under $20 a plate on the menu. No, it's not exactly cheap when compared to McDonald's or Taco Bell, but at great restaurants you get what you pay for....and JP's is definitely worth every penny! Pros: Good Crowd, Helpful Staff more

Excellent Service and World Class Cuisine 6/6/2005

Catch of the Day( Sushi Grade Tuna ) was served in a healthy portion and right on time. It was delicious and in world class form. My appetizer of SASHIMI OF TUNA SERVED ON BABY ARUGULA, PICKLED PINEAPPLE AND FRESH MINT was a perfect set-up for the entree. The wine list is unique and definitely remarkable! Desert in itself is worth a trip: PIADINA SERVED WITH ROASTED FRUIT, SAGE HONEY AND ARTISAN BLUE CHEESE served well my remaining glass of kunde "magnolia lane", sauv. blanc sonoma, ca. '02/03. Professional yet joyous attitude of service. The menu has depth and is exploratory in it's presentation of various world flavors. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience !!!! Pros: Wine List, Deserts, Catch of the Day more

Dissapointed. 3/12/2005

We recently ate at JP's on a Saturday night and were very dissapointed. The atmosphere was ok, but nothing special. The host was friendly, but the wait services was very average. We waited for about 25 min. to get our drinks, another 25 min. to get our salads and another 25 min. to get our entre. The waiter never offered an appology. The food was good but not great. My husbands chicken was dry and my prime rib was very tasty but not something for which I would go back. My house salad was very good. Both of us agreed that neither of our meals were worth the very expensive price. Both of us would rather go to one of the top restaurants in town with more atmosphere and better service the same price that we spent at JP's. Overall, we were dissapointed and will not choose to go back. Pros: good food, cool location, aclaimed chef Cons: so-so atmosphere, very expensive, food not worth it more
