Best

We happened upon this place by accident - had heard of it but weren't planning to go - on an off night (Wednesday). First and foremost, the service was great. Not snobbish while...

Worst

We encountered an extremely dissapointing set of dishes, and a nice, but overwhelmed and overworked wait staff. The pomme frites were nothing more than fries with paprika and did...

MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT 2/17/2005

I've been to JP's a number of times and have never once been disappointed. In every dish the ingredients are fresh and of the highest quality. JP creates the best gnocchi dishes, green beans with hazelnut creme fraiche - YUM! Always tempted by the seafood specials and every entree I've tried is wonderful. This is the only restaurant/chef that I would even consider eating fish of any kind, being a vegetarian for ~ 20 years...but I just can't resist here. Pizza is always crispy and tasty with unique toppings. Service is fabulous. Professional without being snobby, adjusting to rush so you can make the show at the Jungle, or not rushing if you want to linger over dessert. The bar is a nice place for happy hour french fries and a 'bone crusher'. That's where I'll be in about 3 hours. woo hoo! Can hardly wait. Pros: Great food, Friendly staff, Atmosphere more

What a Find! 2/17/2005

Before a show at the Jungle Theater, our group of 4 had dinner at jP. The menu offered so many intriguing items that we decided to get several dishes and share. For appetizers, the piadina was a wonderful blend of flavors, the trout salad was superb and the foie gras was decadent. We continued on with entrees and were not disappointed. The melt-in-your-mouth risotto was superb and the venison and duck-breast were a palate-pleasing delight. The wine, (one white, one red) was recommended by our knowledagable and friendly server and complimented the dishes perfectly. The desserts were a subtle lemon and raspberry coulis and a heavenly butterscotch pot de creme. The food was incredible, but the best part of our evening was the bill. Even though I'm from expensive CA, I actually thought that final amount was a mistake! If I lived in Mpls, I would frequent this restaurant regularly. Pros: great food, great deal, nice atmosphere more

Highly Recommended - A Meal to Remember 2/17/2005

My friends and I went for the first time to JP's Bistro on a busy Friday evening and had one of the best dining experiences in the Cities. My friend brought her 7-year old daughter and she too loved it. We were greetly warmly by both the host and waiter. When trying to decide on wine, our server pointed out a great French Burgundy (for a great price) which we all enjoyed immensely. We had the calamari which was so tender we all agreed it was the best in the city. We also loved the pizza with pesto. Our entrees were delicious - grouper, rib-eye and tuna. The 7-year old ate every bite of grouper on her plate! The desserts were worth the calories - especially the "cheesecake" with caramel and salt! We left blissfully happy (if not a bit too full!) and already made plans to dine here again. Pros: great food, great service, great ambiance Cons: ??? more

Not impressed - unfortunately. 2/3/2005

We encountered an extremely dissapointing set of dishes, and a nice, but overwhelmed and overworked wait staff. The pomme frites were nothing more than fries with paprika and did not deserve the publicity they have received. We tried a flavorless unseasoned pasta and a decent duck breast that lacked any serious thought process or creativity. The service was haphazard throughout the evening, and the drinks were expensive (we were even charged $1.75 for a tonic back with our $8.00 grey goose vodka). We were so dissapointed, we did not attempt a dessert. (they did not appear to be special as we saw them at other tables.) Lastly, and what I find most humorous, there were no salt and pepper shakers at the table as if the chef was arrogantly making a statement. We found the cooking to be severely lacking in seasoning, and salt really would have helped. Pros: nice atmosphere Cons: uninteresting food, expensive drinks, lackluster service more

Great food, Good wine value 1/22/2005

My wife and I ate dinner here last night before the Guthrie. 90 minutes was not quite enough time to enjoy all that jP offers. We started with the calamari which was excellent; a large portion of little ringlets that were slightly seasoned and not fried. I had the duck breast which was a bit expensive ($28) but it tasted fantastic and was a good sized portion. My wife had the duck ravioli it was a light, almost pastry like pasta excellent. jP has a small selection of wine, but many bottles were $40 or less. Our waiter was very personal and attentive, but could have done a better job keeping our wine glass filled. The appetizer came a bit too early, but perhaps that was because we told our waiter we had a theater commitment. The dining area was a bit noisy as the restaurant became busy. Pros: Wine Value, Excellent Food, Dining Discount Cons: , Tad Expensive more
