not so good........ 6/27/2010

Been to Clarks twice in the last month, the reason for the second time......honestly, was hoping the first experience was a fluke!! Food was sub par, then when the food came out wrong.....the chef (also the owner) was not happy with us!! The issue quickly became our problem!! The 2nd visit we came with our two teenage boys and when they ordered the 13.00 cheeseburger we were told we could not sit in the dining room and had to move 15 feet away to the bar area!!!! Really!! We asked why? The answer was- the chef/owner said so!! Ok, so we moved.....then ordered the 13.00 burgers, they were small and tasted terrible...for some reason the chef/owner thinks it's a good idea to put garlic in the burger and in the mustard!!! So, 4 drinks, 4 crappy burgers, 3 small Caesar salads, being moved from the dining room to the empty bar area and a bill of 115.00.....the experience was ridiculous for the 2nd time!! Pros: location Cons: chef/owner more

A very nice surprise! 9/3/2008

I'll start by saying that I'm a food snob, so if I give a restaurant 5 stars it probably deserves it. Pros: amazing food, free parking, convenient location Cons: the main food was too good, so I didn't have any room for dessert more

Simply the best in Oregon! 5/20/2008

Clarke's Restaurant has reached the pantheon of fine dining in Oregon. Chef Jonathan Clarke presides over the preparation of a wide range of contemporary cuisines - French, Italian, and American. This family-owned restaurant dishes up food that covers the gamut from simple to esoteric and absolutely sublime. There?s a menu choice to reflect many culinary moods or needs. In a word, Clarke?s delivers a consistent quality of excellence. Pros: Ambience, Great Service, Outstanding Preparation and quality of food Cons: no lunch more

Fast food 5/12/2008

We would have rated this restaurant three stars except for one complaint: we were asked to leave. We were a very quiet party of five for dinner starting at 5pm and we politely obliged the request to leave at 730pm. We were asked to leave with the explanation that there was a party of 12 that they wanted to seat. There seemed to be plenty of room in the restaurant at that time at several empty tables. more

Wonderful Hosts 4/28/2008

John and his wife are wonderful hosts. They have always been helpful and generous. Whenever I'm hungry I always think to go to Clarke's. The food is delicious and the ambience is comfortable. Food is always delicious and the service is attentive. Keep up the good work. Pros: Service more

An absolutely wonderful place for our wedding reception 3/16/2008

David and I have eaten at Clarke's before and loved it! So, we reserved the entire restaurant for our February 9th wedding reception! It was absolutely perfect thanks to Laurie, Jonathan, and the staff there. Our guests are still raving about the shrimp and lobster risotto, the sea bass, the tenderloin, and the incredible wine choices. Laurie was wonderful to work with during the months leading up to the reception, as she was incredibly helpful in menu selection, wine selection, and room setup, as well as really patient with a first time bride! Laurie and Jonathan also baked and decorated our cake, and that was really great as well. Everything was well organized and we had a great and friendly wait staff for our guests. Our guests commented on what a great choice of locations, and they plan to return to eat there in the future. David and I will be back soon too! more

Good food Great service. 3/4/2008

a Good meal with very good service. My mother has a cinnamon allergy and the waiter went to the point of calling the pastry chef at his home to determine if there was cinnamon in the desert my mother wanted. truly exceptional service. Not a restaurant for children or the picky but they do a good job of catering to customer wants and modifying their food. For example i had a Caesar salad with steak on top and it was very good. also very good is the selection of house made gelato and sorbets. more

Food and service very consistent 1/28/2008

One of the best qualities of Clarke's is that the food is always exceptional. The lobster risotto is a must. But, you can't go wrong with any of their five-star dishes. The atmosphere is extremely cool and comfortable, you'd never know that this beautiful food haven existed looking at Clarke's from the street. Pros: lobster risotto, excellent menu Cons: staff, friendliness, dispensing system more

Great Dinner! Great Service! Order the Risotto Appetizer! 2/27/2007

My husband and I had a great dinner at Clarke's on Monday night. First of all, there is no corkage fee on Mondays so we brought our own favorite bottle to enjoy. Second, the service was excellent. Our server was Dana, he was as professional as they come, very helpful and friendly. I asked him about the Risotto appetizer and he told me it was worth a try. They were OH-SO-GOOD! We loved them. I had perfectly cooked steak that I keep thinking about. My husband enjoyed his pork tenderloin with an awesome side of spatzle. We had loved Clarke's before the remodel and we tried it afterwards but it was still daylight outside and felt it didn't show well in daylight. Last night, Clarke's was SO redeemed it looked great. It is still one of our favorites and the food is excellent. Great espresso too! more

Phew! Much better than some of the earlier reviews suggest!! 1/21/2007

Was just there Friday for a birthday dinner. Not having been before, my wife and I guess things have changed a lot, provoking some of the recent reviews - certainly the decor is not much like pictures on the website - there were no table linens, lot of glass partitions, the whole place is very bright. Pros: wine list, menu, more

Used to be fabulous before they remodeled, no more. Very noisy, staff was rude, pricey food arrived cold! 11/29/2006

We use to come to Clarke's for romantic, quiet dinners, the food was great and the wine list even better! They have done an extensive remodel and expansion and in my opinion they have ruined the restaurant. Pros: Location Cons: Not worth the $$$, boring menu, rude staff, terrible atmosphere! more

food and service have seriously slipped 10/6/2006

we used to come here for special romantic dinners. Pros: close to home Cons: slow inconsistent service more

Agreed, the noise is more than offensive 9/18/2006

If it were quieter and the guests were not allowed to bellow at the top of their lungs, it may not be enough to bring us back. We belong to a wine group and have been coming for several years, but the atmosphere and quality has just slipped too much to reconsider. The food was hastily prepared and yes, there were cold, overcooked dishes at the table. Some entrees were excellent, but it was not the majority. It is not romantic, nor does it resemble an adult-like atmosphere, unless you are into high-fiving at the tables around the crowded dining rooms. Clarke's lost our wine group's business, as well as dining/catering business. Management was non-receptive to our concerns and that is not acceptable. Pros: Parking, dessert Cons: Dinner entrees-cold and overcooked, wine list full of holes (aka out of many), NOISE more

I don't get it? 9/4/2006

We are not sure what the other reviewers are talking about. Since the recent building remodel, Clarke's has become sort of a clip joint. While the food is still fair, it is NOT consistent, entrees were not hot and over cooked at times. Service is ""fine"". Our biggest complaint is the extremely loud, non-relaxing and non-romantic environment. We left feeling that we were taken, as for two, we paid over $200 for a bottle of wine, 2 entrees, starters and dessert and it was only mediocre quality food; not to mention the deafening noise coming from the multitude of other loud-mouthed patrons. Sad to say, we will NOT be returning. This place needs some serious over-looking by management or they will be back off the map, once again. It is too loud and sloppy! No wonder they almost went under a year ago. Cons: Noise and Food more

Truck stop for long-haul shoremen 8/29/2006

In short: the lamb was excellent. Snapper was over cooked and dried to jerky-like consistency. We had the unfortunate experience of sitting in a room near 9 of the loudest, most crude people to inhabit this earth. We mentioned the noise to our server, but they kept serving the loud table vino-which caused them to become louder still; all this despite our having to plug our ears to avoid ruptured ear drums. I have never spent an evening at dinner in a noisier environment, even at the Chuck E Cheese with toddlers. Management did absolutely nothing and since it was Weds, 25% off their over priced wines, there were no other tables to move to. When we left our ears felt like we just listened to a rock concert and we are in our 30s, so we are not old people making a complaint, this was vulgar and disrespectful. DO NOT dine at Clarkes if you want a peaceful, romantic or good meal. Not to mention their wine list is over rated and over priced. This was a huge disappointment. We will NEVER return and warn all of our other Lake Oswego friends, family and neighbors of the same. Pros: We won't be going back, nor will our wine group Cons: noise, management, price and lack of class more

I think the owners wrote previous reviews, this was a painful experience 8/29/2006

We dined at Clarke's with our wine group. Unfortunately, the food was mediocre, the wine was so so and over priced and the most difficult part was trying to speak over the noise. Yes, we expressed our heartfelt concerns to our server, but they did not have any other place for us to move to that was quieter; their only attempt was to ""let us know the sound proofing panels were on order"". We left early because we could not even talk without screaming across the table to hear one another. Also, the food was not what we were lead to believe. We had 4 of the 7-8 starters and most of the entrees between our large table and only 2:8 starters and 3 entrees were rated above average. Mostly ""overcooked"" was the main complaint, improper temperature (cold) and basically thrown together for presentation. Out table spent over $2k that night and it was the worst evening we have ever spent. Clarke's lost our business forever. Pros: there are zero Cons: food, loud environment, service and wine list more

Always a great meal 8/10/2006

Clarke's is now one of our favorite places. The new remodel is very nice but it's the food that brings us back over and over. The salmon dishes they serve are out of this world! Plus the presentation is always first-rate. Never had a meal there I didn't like. And if you have wine questions, Andrew is the waiter for you - always recommends us wonderful wines. Pros: food, atmosphere, wine more

Absolutely consistent top quality 8/7/2006

Most restaurants have their ups and downs. We have never had other than a great meal at this restaurant. Jonathan and Laurie clearly strive for (and almost always reach) perfection. From the relaxing but sophisticated atmosphere to the superb food to the top notch wine list to the sumptuous deserts to the professional but friendly service, this place never disappoints. The braised meat dishes aren't found like this anywhere. The lobster and shrimp risotto always inspires. Lake Oswego now has other nice restaurants, but none of these match Clarke's for consistently exquisite cuisine. more

WOW!!! 6/9/2006

This is the fourth time I've eaten at Clarke's. Each time has been fabulous. The razor clams and the lobster/shrimp risotto are unbelievable. more

Simply the best 4/18/2006

We have been eating at Clarkes since it was first opened. What draws us back time and again is the consistently great food, the friendly service and the fact that this is a chef who truly cares about producing great food. There have been many other restaurants opened in the neighbourhood but if you want truly great food eat at Clarkes Pros: Great Food, Great service more
