NEVER AGAIN WILL I STEP FOOT IN THAT PLACED AGAIN!!!! 6/2/2011

I started going to Blu Salon since i moved to the neighborhood (6 months). I have to say that salon is over priced for the type of work that comes out of there. Yesterday, I walked in for some highlights and walked out with a burnt scalp and it looks like the stylist cracked a egg on my head. The job was poorly done. When I went back to talk to the owner she was really rude. I told her all I wanted was to know what they did to my hair and a apology. She refused and called me "SCAM ARTIST"!!!! I've NEVER been treated so badly. I never complained the 1st time, when I went for brazilian wax and I left with my private part severely burned from a brazilian wax. But a burnt scalp is the bottom line. I dont recomend this place at all!!! (I'm making my compute into the city to my original stylist!!!) more

BEST Service BEST Color BEST cut BEST nails....A+++++ 5/31/2011

I went to Blu Salon over the weekend for the very first time. Kathy colored my hair, Nicky cut it and then Rosa gave me a mani/pedi. For starters when I fist walked in I was impressed with the design of the salon and the friendliness of the staff. Kathy was A M A Z I N G!! She had a lot of great advice and did a fantastic job. I have received so many compliments since. Nicky was super sweet and did an excellent job as well (we also share the same bday...go Libras) Rosa was funny and my nails have NEVER looked better. Overall, Blu Salon deserves an A++++ and I will be going back again and again. PS 3 friends of mine came along with no appointment and Jeff at the Front desk (love him) was able to accomodate them all. Oh and 1 last thing, Stephanie who did not do my hair...L O V E!! She is funny, witty and so friendly. :) ~Kathleen more

Stephanie is my fav! 3/10/2011

Stephanie is just the best! Also, they have these great chairs that allow you to get your hair color and your pedicure done at the same time...saves you spending your whole afternoon at the salon. You get 10% off both your hair color and the pedicure to boot! I can't imagine having a bad experience at Blu. more

what a great find 1/15/2011

what a great find! i stumbled upon it and have been looking for a new place to get my haircut so I took a chance and walked right in. I was able to get a haircut and a manicure and pedicure. My hairdresser was so great ,she gave me a whole new look for the new year. I feel like a million bucks!!!!! more

Worst Haircut 12/22/2010

The lady who cut my hair was very INEXPERIENCED and was literally done in 10 minutes. I didn't want to be rude but asked her nicely if that was it and she said yes. I did not ask her to do anything else as I have a feeling that it may just make it worst. My hair looked ok after blow drying (of course) but the following day I washed it and it showed how AWFUL the haircut was. I would never recommend it to anyone. more

The best place in NJ to really pamper yourself 12/4/2010

I couldn't have had a more different experience at Blu than LadyLosFeliz did. Blu is a beacon of style and sophistication West of the Hudson River. I work in the media world in midtown, and have been to or booked appts. for bosses at all of the major 5th Ave salons. Blu stands apart by providing a similar standard of professional pampering, but without the snooty attitude. Everyone from the owner Melina down treats you like a member of their colorful family when you show up. I have spent whole afternoons getting my hair cut and my nails done, and on special occasions I grab a massage with Albert, who will make you feel like melted butter for the rest of the day. You'd have to have some sort of chip on your shoulder to think they treat anyone differently at Blu. All you have to do is glance at their world-class multicultural staff to see how silly that claim is. If it's real style you're after, with a big dose of attitude-free service, there's no need to ever go to Manhattan again. more

A Message from Blu Salon - 12/4/2010

As a professional business, we at Blu Salon never comment on the reviews or opinions expressed by members of the online community whether they be good, bad or indifferent. However, we feel that this recent off-base portrayal of our establishment deserves a response. Since November 2000, Blu Salon has always been proud of celebrating an attitude-free enviornment where people from all walks of life are welcome to escape from their everyday for a moment of bliss, beauty and tranquility. We accept people of all cultures, races, gender and sexual orientations as clients and employees. When our front desk staff performs an initial phone consultation and a potential guest tells us that they have fine, limp hair or damaged over-processed hair or ethnic, wavy hair, it is our responsibility to find the stylist best suited to meet their individual beauty needs. To address the concerns listed in the above review, we are aware of the client who was not satisfied with her initial bridal hair and makeup trial. We invited the future bride to come back and have another hair and makeup appointment on the house to address any concerns she was having about the first trial run. She decided to decline our offer and seek other alternatives for her special day. We wished her the best of luck for her wedding and told her that we were here for her if she changed her mind. Again though, that's not what this is about. This is a response to the claims that Blu Salon fosters a hostile and prejudiced enviornment for its guests. That is simply not true. We service a diverse range of women and men in the community and it is our job to make everyone feel like a VIP from the time that they enter our doors until they leave the salon. We have always believed in an inclusive nature for everyone that has visited Blu and that is why this review has truly surprised us. Blu Salon would request that anyone who has any inkling of doubt about the character of our business to call our management team at 201-941-5400. more

PREJUDICED & WORST EVER 12/1/2010

This place is AWEFUL – DO NOT GO TO BLU SALON! Stylists are inexperienced, the prices are outrageous for the quality of your experience, and they are totally prejudiced against anyone who is not rich and white. I know someone who canceled her entire bridal partys' appointments only 2wks before her wedding b/c her hair was horrible and make-up looked like a sad, beat-up drag queen. When I called they said they only had 1 stylist who knew how to do "ethnic" hair as they called it, Never knew I had ethnic hair, i thought i had manageable wavy hair and they kept telling me to prof. straighten my hair ($400). I could hear them whispering about my friends’ hair being ethnic and how she "needs to get the keratin (straightening) treatment"…I couldn’t believe it! Thats why you NEVER see minorities in this place... Apparently, they just don’t know or want to do "ethnic" hair... UNBELIEVABLE!!! We both walked out pissed off after overpaying and our hair looked fried and frazzled (btw… it takes me 15 mins normally to blow dry my hair and it always looks great). Also, when you get to the check-out be ready to get bullied into buying their overpriced, bull***t products – they say that you can’t find their products anywhere because they are exclusive, but I saw them at Harmon’s. They looove to quote you a price for something and then charge you more than what we were originally told.. If you want a great place to get your hair done at a reasonable price, you would be better off going to a local dooby-shop and pay $25 for a deep-condition, set & blow dry and you are guaranteed to walk out with your hair looking gorgeous, shiny and healthy. Blu Salon tries to perpetuate this upscale, exclusive swanky salon/spa, but IN DUE TIME PEOPLE WILL COME TO SEE THE HYPOCRISY and RIP-OFF THAT THIS PREJUDICED BLU SALON IS IN FACT!!! Best Ever, and No Attitude! 9/26/2010

I have been following Melina around for 15 years and was so happy for her when she opened her own salon more than 10 years ago. Like the top NYC salons, it has style and professionalism that is super contemporary while honoring the classic styles when appropriate for her clients. She started out rather small and then grew and grew, while adding both space and services. The nail salon has expanded and services such as massage therapies and spray tanning are offered and are well done. I have used all the services and continue to use them when I can. The basic cutting and color are exceptionally well done. Unlike the NYC salons, there is NO ATTITUDE. I can't tell you how often I have spent oodles of $ in places in both NY and NJ that made me feel like the salon is doing me a favor to accept me as a client. NOT at Blu. Finally, hats off to Melina, Jeff, Leesha, Eve, Sonia, Albert...and the countless others there who make each visit a relaxing and rewarding experience. Oh yeah: and let's not foget Melina's committment to developing her young assistants so they have a chance to thrive and grow into fully capable operators. I have this happen in a dozen young people there. more

Stll deciding 7/17/2010

Hair washing lacking quality service from assistants. No robe was offered initially, blouse was sopping wet when one assistant washed my hair. Hair shampooing was inadequate, was not a thorough job. Have to direct assistant how to wash a second time and in places she missed. after being there few times still same quality of hair washing service from all assistants. Assistant also left me under the dryer overtime - I was about to faint from a heat stroke. Although Jeff the manager was very accomodating everytime I felt a lack of anything. What rocks is stylist, Dariann! She is a true pro, from coloring to cutting hair, it comes so naturally to her. She's quick, efficient, no b.s. She has a keen sense of reading what the client wants, and, recommendations. She also has a special talent that no other has when styling hair. She's the only reason I went back! Makes all the wrongs worthwhile. Go to Dariann!!!!! Pros: Dariann Cons: Hair Assistants more

Amazing NYC-style Salon and Spa 5/16/2010

I've been coming to Blu Salon for years now, and after reading some of the other reviews, I figured I would relay my amazing experiences with this place. I work in Manhattan and live in Jersey and have been to plenty of salons and spas in NYC before finding this little gem on the recommendation of a friend. I've seen quite a few of their stylists and all of them are sweet, friendly but, most importantly, talented! They recently renovated to include a spa and nail department and I have to say they really hit the mark with these services as well! I've been seeing Jill for my facials for about a year now, and my skin has never looked or felt better! And I almost always combine my facials with one of Albert's mind-blowing massages! All in all an amazing place right on the Hudson River. Blu's only drawback is their limited nail department. The front desk team is always great at getting me in last minute for my other services, but for nails, you really have to book far out in advance. The only con of an otherwise fabulous escape from the everyday! Pros: Courteous staff, talented stylists, serene spa Cons: Hard to get nail appointments more

WORST EXPERIENCE IVE EVER HAD AT A SALON!!! 6/11/2009

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! NEVER GO HERE! My friend went to get a cut and color and was given the price, when she went to pay the bill they upped it a considerable amount when telling her before how much it would be. The girl completely fried her hair with color and damaged it beyond repair. Then she proceeded to make a few snips and called that a haircut. My friend called back the next day to try and fix what she did and when she arrived they all stared at her and whispered among themselves as if she did something wrong. The only thing she did wrong was pay for this disaster the girl created on her head. She met that day with the owner of the salon Melina who was the most rude unprofessional human being I have ever met. Instead of apologizing and trying to fix the problem she continued to insult and dismiss my friends concern. My friend nor I have never been treated this way and hope any of you reading this don't make the same mistake by going to this salon!!! Pros: NONE Cons: CHANGED PRICE, RUDE, DON'T KNOW HOW TO CUT OR COLOR HAIR! more

oh no 8/22/2008

we must have had the same hair stylist. i unfortunately said the dreaded words, 'do you guys take walk ins?' and my hair will never be the same. i too was placed with a young girl and sat down to explain how i was 7 months pregnant and how i needed something low maintenance as i would be home and nursing for a while in just a couple of months...and that i wanted to keep it LONG...i clearly made the mistake of mentioning that sometimes i secretly thought about bangs, but then realized it would be too much work so i said forget it...just give me something simple...then i got their amazing aromatherapy scalp massage followed by a really nice shampoo. sat back in her chair and before i knew it, she was cutting HUGE chunks to make layers to give me volume...including a greedy chop off my BANGS! when i said what are you doing, she was like 'trust me' i am doing this new technique called ''swelling'' ' trust me'...at that point..what could i do? at the end, i looked like a cross between pat benetar and toni kataine. my friends all laugh at the result of my hormonal impulsive walk in experience. i tried to get it recut somewhere else but it's just a disaster. i will have to wait a good 2 years to get back the length (now it looks like i have an 80's mullet) and grow out these horrible bangs which circumference my heard. oh yea, and i remember that little dog that was running around the salon. gross. i wish i could find a hair stylist i trust. they all want to go nuts and cut like crazy, this one even had long hair so i thought she'd get it...but no. more

not worth the trip 4/5/2008

I met one of the stylists at Blu salon at a bar when I complimented her beautiful haircut. she told me her name and where she worked and I made an appointment a few weeks later. I trucked all the way from the city to Edgewater b/c I hadn't found a stylist I liked that was less than $250 and this place was very reasonable. it was well worth the bus ride b/c I absolutely LOVED my hair! it lasted 3 months and looked fabulous. when it was finally time for a new cut i was so sad to find out my stylist had left. the front desk girl assured me she would find me another great stylist so i figured id give it a shot. the new girl they placed me w/ was really young and i realized either very inexperienced or not very bright. I told her what I was looking for (i have long but thin hair so I'm not a fan of tons of layers)and she looked at me like i was speaking a foreign language. when i noticed her clueless look i started to repeat myself she rudely blurted out "yeah...yeah... I get it". at this point I started to sweat (I've had enough bad haircuts to get a little paranoid) I told her very firmly I wanted a little trim and that was it. she gave me this fake cold smile and spent about 15 minutes on my hair. Then to make matters worse, before she started to blowdry my hair she walked away and started talking to one of the other girls and kept pointedly looking at me and then they both started laughing. i got the cold shoulder from her during the blowdry and when she was done she didn't perk up until she walked to the front desk with me to pay, then she was all smiles and warm wishes. i probably gave her a better tip than she deserved but I was till so mad the next day i called to complain and was given a "shocked" "this is the first time we've EVER received a complaint! I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your visit but...." basically you can go to (fill in blank). I forgot to mention while I was paying the salon's lap dog threw up a giant hairball as I was walking out. gross. more
