Berkeley Motor Works excels in auto-repair market 4/19/2011

Mike Scwharzbart's shop advised on my original BMW acquisition at Weatherford, handling follow up inspection and subsequent required maintenance. This shop has superb customer service, extremely knowledgeable mechanics and the work performed is always top tier coupled with timely and direct communication/ recommendations thru the diagnosis process. As auto makers design vehicles with increasing sophisticated technology, Mike is constantly on the go researching latest repair data for his customers. I would not consider taking my car anywhere else. more

I've known Mike at Berkeley Motor Works for many years. When they are dealing with BMW's, they are concise about what needs to be done. They have excellent machinists who are extremely knowledgeable and don't waste your time beating around the bush or keeping you in the dark. They work hard at building up a repoire with their customers. I know that I can get on the horn to Mike and he'll be responsive to my needs and calls. Quality service with a personalized touch. 2/4/2011

I started using Berkeley Motor Works many years ago because they specialize in BMWs and they are substantially less expensive than the dealership. Not only do they provide quality service, but they always explain what the problem is and what my options are, for example, what has to be fixed immediately and what can wait. Their level of communication in explaining what the issues are is what I appreciate the most. The are very accommodating and always have that personalized touch, from explaining things over the phone to picking you up and dropping you off. Only fixes what needs to be fixed. If you have an emergency, they'll fix that too. The place to go. 2/3/2011

I'm very faithful to Berkeley Motor Works. I would never take my BMW anywhere else. Berkeley Motor Works really goes out of their way to accommodate my schedule. I recently stopped in on my way to work when a low oil light came on. They checked it out and refilled my oil, free of charge. All they wanted was to get me back on my feet. Whenever I go in, they always have a conversation about what is coming up next, and what options I have for future maintenance. They don't dictate what I should do next. They give me guidance so that I can make the best decision. I'm the type of person who would rather get everything done in one visit. Berkeley Motor Works takes care of what matters at the moment so I don't have to come in often. When I do need work done, I always go to this family owned business because they really care. I won't go to a dealership, and would never pay a penny to anybody else. more

This is an all around excellent place to have your car fixed 1/20/2010

The owner (Mike) is obviously a seasoned pro who understands his customers' needs. His mechanics correctly diagnosed a nagging problem with my car that no one else had been able to fix and now my car runs perfectly! The proposed repairs were explained to me in a way that I could understand (I'm not mechanical) and the cost turned out to be much less than I had expected based on my other experiences. The car was ready when promised and I drove off very happy and satisfied with the service I received. Pros: caring and thorough mechanics. Good value for honest service more

Best place I've ever had a car serviced! 12/8/2008

I've had my BMW serviced all over the bay area, because I've lived in San Francisco, the South Bay and the East Bay. This is the best shop I've ever used - and now I won't go anywhere else. In my experience the place that is closest to Berkeley Motor Works in quality is Concord BMW - but at twice the price. Plus this is a small shop so you get wonderfully personalized service - they work within your schedule, drop you off and pick you up at home, work quickly, and never do unnecessary work. \r \r There are currently two negative reviews on this site which make very strong statements - and that REALLY surprises me. I've been going here for over three years now and I've never had any experience like the ones they describe - not even the hint of one. They are always friendly and prompt, and the work they do is first rate. Give them a chance, it is well worth it! more

Best Ever! 10/30/2008

I met Mike in 1991 or 1992 when I was referred to him about a '74 2002 I got stuck with. When the car finally looked like a lost cause, Mike helped me get a '79 528i for a good price, and then kept it on the road like a new car for 12 years! I'm the farthest thing from an automotive expert, and I learned to depend on Mike and his crew for straight advice, honest work, and always the best price-to-reward ratio. I learned a ton of stuff from Mike about how it all works (old dog, new tricks), and I even looked forward to visiting the shop for oil changes, service etc.\r \r GREAT service, helpful people, good value. What's not to like? more

Best BMW Service 10/30/2008

Berkeley Motor Works - just the best car experience I've ever had (I'm 63). I bought a not-very-good 2002 in the early 90's, and was referred to Mike Scharzbart for help. He was honest enough to tell me I shouldn't put any more money in the car, and then not only helped me sell it but helped me get into a '79 528i that I drove for 12 or 13 years.\r \r Mike and his staff turned every wrench during that time except for one oil change when I was on the road - and Mike found me the mechanic in Austin TX that did that for me! The car was trouble-free and fun to drive all the way through (I finally sold it at 306,000 miles), and Mike, Jane, Ilya, Carol and everybody else at the shop were friendly, helpful and straight up about everything. I even learned a lot about cars from Mike (and I'm hopeless about mechanical stuff).\r \r I can't recommend these folks enough - I still drove down for service after I moved to Santa Rosa. Berkeley Motor Works in Albany is the best place for you to bring your BMW, MINI, Mercedes, and AUDI. They are so professional and friendly... \r My mom brought her car there (by the way she doesn't speak good English), she was having all kinds of problems with her car... They didn't take advantage of her and only FIXED what was needed on her car... There were some recommendations for the near future but the most important is that they didn't go replacing stuff that wasn't needed.... They could have easily take advantage of her being that she doesn't speak or can understand English very well but they didn't, instead they took my mom under their wings and fixed her car! This is WHY I would recommend these professionals to all my family and friends, Oh and YOU.... \r \r 5 Stars and MORE!!!!\r \r Thanks you guys! more

I LOVE YOU GUYS AND THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY CAR!!! If you own a BMW I would strongly recommend you bring it to Berkeley Motor Works on San Pablo Ave in Albany. They are the BEST! Regardless what reviews you read or what you hear about the place, you need to try them before you make any decisions... The price are reasonable, the work is professional, and the service is outstanding... They have the best employees ever... The service adviser at the front desk is so nice and polite...Literally she is the sweetest thing ever!!! She listens to everything you say and makes sure that your car is fixed correctly at a reasonable price... Every time I bring my car in, they are always so happy with a smile and ready to fix my car... They drop me off at work and even comes to pick me up when my car is finish. \r When I brought my car in recently, it was beat down and running like a broken scooter... It was idling like crazy... Honest! 8/9/2005

These people are honest! That was the most important factor in choosing a mechnic. They are responbile, timely, and fairly priced. The service is impeccible. I've never felt that I was being taken advantage of. If my budget is limited, they are responsive in assisting me in choosing the most important things to fix. These people are great! more
