Watch yourself. 10/8/2007

Ah, yes, the rude, pregnant brunette hostess. I have read that others have felt her icky stare and her overbearing presence also. My date and I had just sat down with a couple nice glasses of wine. My date had her feet tucked under her on one of the couches. Little did she know that the hostess had her in the crosshairs. ""Uh, I'm gonna need you to get your feet off of there,"" she blurted at my date. Okay, maybe feet shouldn't be on couches. But they weren't steel-toed work boots and I'm not sure you should be told to take your sandled-feet down at such a place. The next victim was the bouncer, who was guarding the outside patio for a private party. Now, I didn't hear the whole conversation (it was loud), but I did catch the raised-voice part in which she accused the bouncer of calling the servers liars. ""My servers are not liars,"" she sorta-yelled. Don't know what that was about. As far as I'm concerned, when a hostess at a restaurant is behaving brutish to, and in front of customers, it's time to go. So we did. Beechwood is an otherwise pleasant place with good drinks and good food and a very nice atmosphere. But the hostess may as well be swinging around a riding crop. And, upon asking a server about it, I was told that she is often the subject of customer contempt. Like I said, the drinks are good. But they're not that good. Pros: nice, relaxing atmosphere Cons: bad, tense atmosphere more

Best service in town! If you like to dine out, I suggest this place. 9/12/2007

Ok, first off...to the people who wrote the awful reviews of this place, don't have a sense of a great discreet flavorful eccentric gem of a restaurant if it got lodged in your throat when you were eating it. The food at this place is extremely good. I will start when my party and I walked in. We were greeted by a not-so kind lady who was very pregnant. Her attitude was not that pleasant but I decided to forget about it and just enjoy my meal. We were a bit skeptical of how the rest of the evening would be having just met the first person of the staff. When we walked into the dining room I was shocked. It was packed. There was probably about 20 tables. It was a Friday and it was extremely busy. The dining room which is hidden from the busy bar and lounge area has a Frank Lloyd Wright feel to it. We sit down and are greeted by this young 20-something year old guy named Dan. He was very personable and welcomed us to the restaurant. We had never been here before so he explained to us how the menu's work. You can order bar food inside the main dining room as well. I suggest to try the skirt steak, med rare-med with the unforgettable sweet potato fries-that's what he recommended and my girlfriend took him up on it and could not stop raving out it. He also suggested about trying some of the edamame for the table and the tomatoes and burrata cheese. It has some crispy proscuitto on top which just made it perfect. I usually drink Pinot Noir by the bottle or a light-medium bodied merlot but the server suggested that we try this really nice bottle of Sangiovese from Tuscany. It was fantastic. It paired perfectly with the duck leg confit Dan suggested and the great flat iron steak my friends split. We ended with a nice portion mint-chip ice cream sandwich for dessert. It was a bit noisy but a great experience non-the-less. Dan thanked us for coming and asked us our names, assuming that we would be back, which we will. GREAT FOOD AND GREAT SERVICE. Pros: Great service, inexpensive for most LA hotspots, great drinks, great bottled wine menu Cons: A bit noisy when room is full, you might need to drive around a few times to find the place. more

We only had drinks and dessert, but it was fantastic! 9/9/2007

My friend and I went to Beechwood pretty late on a Friday night. The place was packed, playing great music, and since we just wanted drinks and dessert, we weren't sure where to go. The hostess was really nice and told us to grab a drink and look for an open table since the lounge was pretty much first come first serve. The bartender was fantastic too and got us drinks quickly. We ordered cupcakes, grabbed an open table and they came out right away - delicious chocolate, red velvet and banana treats. All the food we saw coming out looked and smelled fantastic. I have to say the service was the best part of us being there, can't wait to go back and try the food. Pros: service, music, decor Cons: crowded, noisy more

food bad service even worse management abusive stay away 9/8/2007

I went to this restaurant for my birthday dinner with a few friends, the worse night. \r The food was ineatable, The chef had a very heavy hand with the salt.Called when we told the waiter this he had no response, usually if you have a problem with the food at any restaurant, they are only to happy to get you something else or take it off the bill. NOT AT BEACHWOOD.\r My friends paid the bill, left the waiter a 12% tip , if i was the one leaving the tip he would have been given nothing.\r We were otside in the parking lot waiting for our car when our waiter and a big bouncer appeared, he confrounted us and asked why he had only been given the 12% tip he deserved moore and what was our problem,I told him if he worked for me he would have just been fired for chasing down customers asking for moore money .called the next day to complaine, i was called a lier and told never to come bach again. then i asked for the owners name DAVID REESE,and was told it would not do me any good writting to him , he didnt want any contact with customers. What a shame Mr Reese doesnt mind how abusive the staff are to the customers. Cons: valet parking more

A chill version of the Hollywood Scene 7/27/2007

I love this place! You can get dressed up or where jeans! Anything goes. The food is great, they have great yam fries! It has a nice restaurant section that is seperate from the bar area. So you can have a romantic dinner, and then head to the bar after. They have a great martini list, you have to try a few. They also have an outdoor patio area with fire pits. It reminds me of hollywood without all the fake people. Pros: Good prices, great food, amazing atmosphere more

Best Burger in Town 7/8/2007

This place doesn't have great service, nor does it have enough room, but if you're lucky enough to grab a booth and a menu.. order the Burger. It's amazing... and I don't want to rock the boat here, but it may be better than Fathers Office. The only thing that did get under my skin here was the fact that we ordered a specific beer and they ran out, didn't tell us, then served another beer like it.. without asking or letting us know. Clearly, we're not blind and noticed. Argh, frustrating but then you eat that damn burger and all your troubles melt away. more

One of the worst dining experiences of my life... 6/11/2007

I want to preface by saying I am in the business and I know the challenges of running a restaurant.\r Our experience at Beechwood Cafe was unforgivable and I choose not to bother to write to the management because I don't want anything from them. I do however think it should be publicized.\r If you just want to hang out and drink and don't care about food at all or quality or service- the place is probably fun and fine.\r We made a huge mistake in taking our young daughter. We thought we would be ok if we arrived first seating 6pm and would miss the ""hipsters"". we thought it was known for good food as well as atmosphere. We arrived at 5:45pm to a locked door. The rudest hostess in history (pregant brunette- I hope you read this and correct your behavior) stood behind the door and ""mouthed"" 6:00- we open at 6:00.\r She did not even have the courtesty to allow us to come in and sit on the patio and have drinks for the 15 minutes before they were officially opened. I motioned to her that we would like to put our name in for a reservation and she again with great attitude shouted 6:00 through the locked door.\r As I stood there with child in arms, I again motioned I would like to make a reservation. To which she finally cracked the door ever so slightly and said ""what"". I asked her if I could make a res for the 3rd time and she yelled to the other girl behind the desk-can we take a res at 6pm. She said yes.\r We should have left then.\r The end of the story is that my entire family got sick and my darling daughter has been throwing up & had diahrea for 2 days. It was a horrendous experience. We will be contacting the health dept(not to be mean) but to save others from the illness our family had to go through for two days.\r There was one saving grace besides a nice patio and fireplace.\r There was a very kind young man who served us-young actor looking type- sweet faced kid in his 20's. He was kind and patient and attentive - nothing like anyone else that worked there. Pros: one nice server Cons: food, rude staff more

If you don't like this place, you have no taste! 6/4/2007

Anyone who had a negative review about this place is a moron. I was there this past Saturday for my birthday. We had a table for 8 people and everyone of us were very impressed with the whole night. The service was great (Mia was our server), the food was great, and the crowd was great. I don't know how you can't like this place. Our bill came out to $70/per person, which included tip. We were all stuffed and had a good buzz. I will definitely be back soon! Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Great food, trendy atmosphere 5/23/2007

Beechwood is the kind of restaurant that seems too trendy to serve great food; but this is in fact not the case. Despite the orange booths and undulating chandeliers, Beechwood's menu is stocked with great surf n' turf dishes, most notably the roasted chicken. For anyone who wants a good meal served by friendly people in an intriguing atmosphere, Beechwood is for you. more

good food, good crowd 5/14/2007

Went on Saturday around 11pm, so the place was packed but my 3 friends and I were fortunate to snag a table. Service was very nice and fast. Had the lamb meatballs - the definition of delicious! Also had the burger which was ok but nothing special, I probably won't get again. Sweet potato fries were very yummy. It was a fun party atmosphere, and the crowd seemed like all good, fun, normal people. Had a great time & definitely plan to return! Pros: service, location, ambience, lamb meatballs more

Solid place 2/23/2007

My boyfriend and I tried out Beechwood b/c we very curious why this trendly looking place was doing in the middle of now where. We went on a Wednesday night, so it obviously wasn't very crowded. We were given the option to sit at the bar, lounge, or dinning room...all served a full menu. We picked the dinning room. My boyfriend LOVED the decor and LOVED the food. I'd have to agree that the place had a very trendy and cool, but romantic ambiance to it and the food was delicious. Our waiter was friendly and the service was fast. All in all a good experience! more

Would not recommend 2/15/2007

I brought my girl there for the Valentine's day dinner thingy, I thought well, since they have a fix price menu the food should be okay. NO ... it's not okay. I had a duck confeit and turn out it's green bean, potato, and 2 tiny pieces of duck .. it tasted worse than can food. Then I had a ""don't-know-what-it-is"" thing, and I still don't know what it is, it tasted okay, but I still saw a lot of eaters just return it to the waiter without touching it. Then I had a Porterhouse ... I would rather go get some BBQ pork from a chinese restaurant ... The dessert was chocolate dipped strawberry, some icecream, and some sweet biscuits .. looks like a kid's meal and it doesn't taste that good anyway ... Wine was okay, I had a glass of Syrah from France\r \r The atmosphere and the decoration looks okay ... but the food .... (-. -lll) \r I don't think I would go there again ... more

in response to a liar 2/14/2007

I was at Beechwood on the night that user ""mrichland"" was here. Let me tell you that this person is a liar! I was on the patio with a couple of friends and this idiot and his pals were completely intoxicated, obnoxious, loud and aggressive. at one point my girlfriend and I almost approached the manager ourselves to complain about them. I felt like I was at a frat party not enjoying a nice night at one of my favorite spots! I also witnessed the guy who claims he was ""attacked"" (PLEASE!!!!) antagonize the bouncer who was completely calm until the guy grabbed the bouncer and ripped his shirt! There was NO violence on the part of the bouncers! This guy is a complete j*rk who not only ruined my night but I'm sure the staff at Beechwood's night as well. And by the way your girlfriend was SO wasted she could barely stand up! If she bumped into me one more time I was going to knock her out! And furthermore ""left alone on the streets of Venice, CA""?!!! Give me a break! Go back to Bel Air, Beverly Hills or better yet your dorm room at UCLA and don't cause trouble for an establishment that I hold dear to my heart! Please disregard this amateur's review! It's completely false. Just another idiot looking for compensation! Pros: ambience, amazing bar menu and cool local joint Cons: don't come here on a weekend night! all idiots that aren't locals causing trouble! more

Looking to be attacked by a bouncer? Go here. 2/12/2007

I recently visited this establishment on a weekend night. It was in fact my bday celebration. After having a good time and consuming some beverages our friend's girl friend was kicked out and left alone on the streets of Venice, CA to fend for herself. We questioned the bouncer about this and requested that she be let back in such that she wasn't by herself drunk - afterall, isn't the bar responsible if they drive home drunk and cause vehicular homocide?\r \r In any case, while discussing this matter with the bouncer we were approached by the manager who in a very rude and unforgiving tone told us she wasn't coming back in. As we continued to discuss this, and she was walking away, she accused us of calling her a *itch and told us to leave. We quickly followed in a conversation with the bouncer saying that this wasn't the case. Before we could finish discussing this matter the bouncer grabbed me by the neck and begain pushing me. I immediately defended myself and was tackled by the other bouncer who then chocked me while I lie restrained and injured on the ground. \r \r If you'd like to be accosted and treated like dirt then go to Beechwood. The staff are rude, the manager needs anger management classes and I am pretty sure their bouncer(s) were/are drinking on the job. You've been warned, but I highly recommended steering clear of Beechwood. I came home that night with an injured back, bruised and cut knee, and messed up jaw. Pros: No pros, this place is terrible Cons: If you'd like to be attacked by a bouncer this is the place to go. Mgmnt is terrible and rude more

Very cool after-work bar! 11/24/2006

Order your drinks and head out back for their firepit. It's a great place to meet up with coworkers and toss back a few, along with some really good food. more

great patio, awesome food 11/6/2006

Skip the dungeon-like dining room and sit outside by the firepit. You can order the full restauarant menu or the bar menu (mmmmm do I love their pulled pork sandwich and their skinny fries with aioli....) more

Loud and a Long Wait 10/10/2006

I took my in-laws from out of town to Beechwood for a nice, LA dinner. First, we waited, and waited and waited...sat outside, drinking wine, too much wine...and then FINALLY after an hour wait, we were seated. Our server was nice and friendly, but it was hard to get a word in edge wise with all the noise in the room. Our meals were OK and simple. We had a bigger reservation the following night, so I guess ""simple"" was a good thing. I don't think I will go back for dinner, but maybe if I want to sit outside again and drink too much wine! (oh and it gets kind of annoying on Friday nights when the bouncer has to clear out all the chairs from one side of the patio due to fire hazards...not very well thought out in the end) Pros: Outside, Price Cons: Loud, Long Wait, Crowded more

Great Spot 8/16/2006

I live a short walk from Beechwood and make regular visits. I've only eaten in the dining room once, where the food was good, but the room was loud. The real place to be is the bar/patio. It's classy but low-key, with a great menu - love the pulled pork. I've never had trouble with service, although it doesn't qualify as anything better than average. Wine and drinks are reasonable. All in all, its a great place to bring people and hang-out, away from the more touristy area near the beach. Pros: Food, ambiance Cons: so-so service more

I was not impressed 8/15/2006

I was not impressed with Beechwood. It was so dark on the patio I could barely see my friends. Furthermore, a cocktail waitress actually elbowed me out of her way! The bartender wasn't much nicer. more

Restaurant overcharged our party by two plates. 8/8/2006

Restaurant overcharged our party by two plates. Granted it was a large party. One of the plates on the receipt, no one ordered. The other was a duplicate. Pros: N/A Cons: Restaurant overcharged our party by two plates. more
