I moved from Orlando to chicago and I hired American van lines east for my move. The service was excellent from the people at the office to the guys That came to pick up my ite...

Worst

Overestimated the time needed for the move, promised a refund and never provided it. Quality of handling the furniture was just acceptable.

Confusing this company with American Van Lines 8/31/2010

First of all American Van Lines East is not affiliated with the Global American Van Lines even though I thought it was too. I did my research and homework and found out that most of the negative reviews for this company dont even belong to them. I have to say that for the money I got a superb move! and while the price did go up a little from the original estimate, my items where larger than the ""norm"". and I did not mind paying since they got my things to me in Nebraska in a weeks time. Amazing! The guys were very nice and friendly and worked very hard and fast! Nothing was broken and they stayed in contact with me the whole time too! I would def. recomm. them to anyone moving! Do your homework and make sure you are replying to the right place if you have something nasty to say. These ratings stay here forever! Duh, stupid people! more

Do NOT use this Company, BIG BAD HEADACHE..(RIPOFF) 8/12/2010

I only wish there was a 0 star on this thing, or even a minus star...that's what they deserve. They never started moving even one item til at least 33 minutes into the move as I had to fill out ""paperwork"" and they won't lift a thing til all documents are signed. In the mean time I was paying for 3 movers and a truck to stand around and do nothing. Also I filled out an estimate sheet online posting all my items and when they showed up less then half the items were on the document they gave me, to which the moving people hemed and hawed at the entire time. They would not move one glass item, they wanted to charge me 25 dollars to wrap each in bubble wrap. They wanted to charge me 25 dollars to put a piece of plastic over my mattress. I said just throw it in there and they made me call the ""boss"" to get some sort of approval, which they all stopped and sat around while that phone call was being done. I can honestly say these guys were the WORST movers I've ever had. They didn't re-hook up the dryer. The hooked up the washer hot to cold and cold to hot so I had to do it all over again. They put the furiture in the wrong rooms and basically offloaded most of it into my garage instead of putting it where it was supposed to go. They broke my desk while taking it apart, which wasn't caught until I started to try to put it back together. $250 down the drain. They used MY boxes and materials to wrap up my TV without asking me and then charged me $25 dollars for it!!! This company is all bad, trust the reviews here and pick ANYONE else..you will be better off. If you do get stuck with them, tell them you will not initial the start time until they actually start moving items. (That would have saved me from having to complain to the BBB). more

AVOID at aLL COSTS!!!!! 6/22/2010

I contacted American Vanlines East Inc. (MOVERS) to move my furniture from my storage and condo to my new house. I worked with Mike to understand the hourly rate and extra costs. While solidifying the contract rate and services to be performed I provided on the phone to Mike the list of items that would be moved to the final destination.\r Mike sent me an estimate via Email and told me that glass would need to be wrapped and that I could do that myself to save costs. I was told that I could purchase my own bubble wrap and cardboard for my mirrors/tvs/tables; and that is what I did. I was provided an estimate of 5 hours (this, I was told, would be on the highest end of the estimate and it shouldn't take this long. I was also told I was in charge of the move time and I could end it at any time). My estimate was for $79 an hour with an hour of travel time at $79=474. With any extra wrapping--I was EXPECTING a move around $500. I initialed the contract and returned it. I also provided a 79 deposit to secure my moving date. The night before the move I called the company to ask one final time if there were ANY extra costs? I was again, only told about bubble wrap and cardboard. I asked how much it would be if the company had to wrap something for me in the event I ran out of my personally purchased bubble wrap. The person on the phone did not know the ""exact"" cost and told me I would be fine with what I purchased. I asked if there were any extra fees and I was told a flat ""NO.""\r \r Problems began on the morning of the move, 6/15/10 at 8am. Upon arrival, the team of 3 men greeted me at my storage unit, and then began doing a complete estimate. No team members even knew the likenesses of the locations we were going to--asking if they were houses/condos/apartments, etc. The ""foreman"" sat down in my storage unit and provided me with several contracts to sign--as an academic I read everything--and there were things I was not comfortable with signing. Some of the contract language suggested that the move time could be grossly underestimated and that I was responsible for paying for the new move as the online estimate was just that--an estimate. \r \r I then asked the foreman how many hours he thought my move would be--and I was told 7-9. Of course by initialing the online Email with Mike the week prior, I waved my option of an on-site estimate--as classic ""catch-22"" by the company, and an unethical business practice. I was willing to deal with this--until the foreman began estimating my ""PACKING COSTS."" The foreman had a list that I did NOT find online --which included wrapping my mattresses at $25 X4, my couches in plastic (not mentioned in the estimate or phone calls, etc). After adding up this list it was an EXTRA $272. So, now my move was $983. At this point I refused to initial anything (which infuriated the foreman who called the manager), and I cancelled the move BEFORE it started. \r At this point I was put on the phone with the office manager, Gill, who haggled the price down for me--waving the wrapping charges that were supposedly mandatory, bartered with me on time--telling me, ""I could end the move at any time if I felt it was taking too long!"" What right-minded person is going to end a move when half of the things are in the moving truck, a piano is on the front lawn, and the move is incomplete???--of course the customer is ""stuck"" when the move is half-done--and forced to complete the move to get things off the truck by paying for it. I told Gill that we would not do the move and he told me he was going to run my 350 ""move in progress cancellation fee"" so I might as well just use the guys. He also was not going to remove from the bill the hour of time that it took for all the haggling (it was now 9am). The company ran my card for 350, even though the move NEVER STARTED.\r \r The company purposefully underestimated the move to double the price and used classic tricks to continue the move. This is unethical & I want my $350 back.\r Pros: on time to rip you off... Cons: bait and switch, catch-22, unethical, confrontational more

HORRIBLE - AVOID 6/3/2010

If I could give them zero stars, I would. Pretty much same as below - absolute rip off, bait-and-switch sales, delays, not letting me make changes then charging me for them. The sales person (Ed) blew smoke up our rears about the pricing then wouldn't return phone calls or emails (multiple) so I could make changes and comply with the contract, and on and on. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. Absolute rip-off, DO NOT recommend. Pros: The actual movers themselves - we had Roc and Stephen. Cons: Lie, cheat, and steal, much? more

American van lines east 5/14/2010

I recently moved with American Van Lines East from FL to IL.\r It was the best move i ever had,and believe me i'm used to moving many times due to my job.\r The sales person in the office gave me an accurate estimate and explained me all about the process of moving with American Van Lines East.\r The movers on pick up and delivery were professional and handeled my items with care.\r I know i will be moving soon again ,for sure i know who i'll be using again!\r Thank you American Van Lines East for the service and stress free move!\r Pros: best mover more

Ripped me off 5/12/2010

I agree with all the other one star ratings, but I say negative 10 is still too high. Wow, I see that others have had the same horrifying experiences, but I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse! I was low-balled, my furniture was worthless afterward, and items have disappeared. Not only were the customer service agents rude to me, they threatened to call the cops on ME! The one getting robbed! \r \r They verbally sell you one thing, then make you sign a contract that means otherwise. The contract itself is written in a such as way that if you just skim through it, it sounds similar to what you heard on the phone, so you just go with it. Dishonest people like this count on no one having the time to read every single word of fine print so that they can rip you off legally. That doesn't make it ethical, though! \r \r I wish I had read more of these kinds of pages beforehand, and I will from now on. It's the only chance we have of making America's businesses honest again! \r \r \r Pros: Movers were polite about ripping me off Cons: Shady business practices more

Bait-and-Switch sales tactics, ruined furniture, overcharged 5/12/2010

I moved from Orlando to Las Vegas.\r One star is the lowest you can rate, or it would be -10.\r \r Good Points:\r The movers in Florida were nice and one even admitted to me that 90% of the people he has moved have the same exact problems I was having with the surprise fees.\r \r Bad Points:\r Lying salesman. \r Lie 1) ""Your price is guaranteed."" I paid $850 more than my estimate, even though I left half of my stuff behind and declined other services.\r Lie 2) ""We insure .60 to the dollar. "" The written contract...the binding one...states that they pay .60 cents to the POUND of a damaged article. If they destroy your dresser (and they did), you'll get about $12 for it. \r Lie 3) ""Your 36 square foot cedar chest won't affect your square footage much."" At 5.67 per sq. ft., that's $204.\r Lie 4) ""This includes all your packing materials and boxes for electronics."" I paid $475 for packing materials. \r \r My salesman was ""Mike."" He sold me (conned me) on a so-called guaranteed price. I told him exactly what I had, and he gave an estimate based on the square footage of my belongings. He told me that I had three days before the move to add or subtract things on my list in order to guarantee my price. I called two weeks later to tell him about an item I had forgotten about, and he replied, ""That's not going to change things much, so I won't even add that in there,"" leading me to believe that my price wouldn't go up. \r \r Moving out day: The foreman informed me that there was a window of error that could be anywhere from 10-100% of what my estimate was!!!! A WINDOW? They don't tell you that until moving day because if you cancel 48 hours or less prior, they charge you fully anyway. Of course, I panicked and started unpacking boxes, but they started moving boxes before I had a chance to get to any more. Longer story short, I left behind half of my belongings and STILL had to pay $850 extra over my estimate. (My first estimate included packing my entire kitchen for me, but I ended up doing that myself.)Talking to management was to no avail, they apparently hire people who's job it is to harrass dissatisfied customers.\r \r Moving In Day:\r They showed up on the 11th day, at night. It had been raining, and my friend started laying cardboard on the floor so they wouldn't track in dirt. They wouldn't wait for her to finish, just walked right by her!! My carpets are ruined! I had asked about some missing parts to my furniture, and he said, ""If I find it, I'll mail it to you."" Yeah right. AFter they left, I started to notice knicks on my belongings, and then when I got my broken floor lamp rigged to stand up, I saw the extent of the damage. Everything they moved was marred, scratched, dented, or detached. Entire boxes are missing! To this day, I am still searching for items that never made it. The movers that you see are careful in front of your face, but when they transfer things to an 18-wheeler, forget it. No one there to see them ruin your stuff! (And yes, I tipped each mover and remained polite to them.)\r \r Lesson: If moving cross-country, paying American Van Lines East is like buying everything in your house all over again, only you are paying for damaged goods.\r Poor, poor, poor. \r \r Pros: The movers were nice Cons: shady salesman, rude management, damaged belongings more

best movers in the state!!!!! 2/24/2010

I used american van lines east for my move to brandon from tampa. The level of customer service and quality of work was amazing! They packed all my boxes and fradgile items that said i was going to do ""oops"" but i got to busy. i have moved with other movers in the past and feared that they were going to use this against me but rather than gouge me they did it for me. The workers were strong and as fast as you can be without being careless and the fact that the hourly rates include ALL labor that is associated with a move was very refreshing. They are without a doubt the best movers on the east coast and the next time i move i will most definately use them again. Pros: did not charge me to pack my fradigile items or boxes Cons: n/a more

Exellent service great price I highly recomend 2/24/2010

I just used american van lines east and was as satisfied as anyone could be. I have moved MANY times in the past and never been so pleased with the service i have received! First they went over my items list with me BEFORE they started loading and gave me an exact price. Most of the movers I have dealt with will only let you know about any price adjustment after they take your stuff. The workers were very professional and skilled we had a few odd items including a chandolier and glass display case that arrived without any damage at all! Im glad I that i chose this company and will recomend them to anyone who likes up front pricing and top knotch service!!! Pros: Up front pricing Wonderful service Cons: I dont move every day more

great service 2/17/2010

i moved last week from tampa to nashville.I move a lot because of my job and by far this was the best experience that i had.\r From my sales person Mike to the team with carlos as the head foreman and his helpers .I would like to appreciate the courtesy, the energy and the professionalism of the crew that was in charge of my move.\r Great job American van lines east thank you very much for making this my best move.\r Sara Pros: Profassionl all the way more

DO NOT.... DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY 2/13/2010

I WOULD NOT RATE THIS COMPANY WITH A STAR but I had to or else it would not let me publish this .. I give them A NEGATIVE 10!!\r We hired this company to move our belongings from Chiefland Florida to Clearwater Florida aprox 120 miles\r We were given a written estimate for the move which we accepted, on the day of the move the truck came which was not large enough to move our house. The movers themselves were very nice and professional but then it all went down hill from there. The foreman walked through the house adding fees for bubble wrap and tape ($4.50 a roll) and additional charges for wrapping our furniture... Isn't that why you hire a professional moving company to do your move?\r When all those fees were all said and done the moving cost had gone up $700.00 so I called and spoke to our salesman ""Gil"" and raised cane he said he would drop the fees by 30%. Well the movers loaded up the truck and we left Chiefland at 5:45pm the moving truck was ahead of us. The three cars that were also packed because they did not send a large enough truck arrived at the house in Clearwater around 8pm ish the truck did not arrive until after 9pm (added fees for longer travel time) Into the move the foreman came up to me and gave me the FINAL bill which now had gone up 50% and I hit the roof. He had called his supervisor ""Goldie"" and I asked to speak to her because it is now 11pm and I had no way to go and get a cashiers check or access to my bank (trying to come up with another way to pay them) she WOULD NOT speak to me and told the\r foreman if we did not pay the difference to close the truck up with the rest of our belongings and leave. And to top it off we did not get ALL of our stuff... we have to HIRE ANOTHER moving company to get the rest!!!! Nice way to do business. I have a disabled husband so we really needed our beds. I have made since made three attempts to have Gil respond to e mails about a few items that are missing and I can't even get him to reply.\r I WILL/WOULD NEVER recommend this company for anything not even to move next door.Their practices are unethical and they should be ashamed of themselves for taking advantage of people .. a move across town or across the country is very stressful and they SO ADD to the stress!!\r PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!!!!! Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING more

Don't use American Van Lines East!!! 2/12/2010

Reps are nice when trying to gain your business, however, when they do, it's downhill from there. Initial furniture pick up was great, but then they don't drive out of state. They drive to the border of your state then transfer your belongings onto an 18-wheeler. That's when the trouble starts. They are nice people, however, not professional movers. Go elsewhere. Don't use American Van Lines. They don't tell you about all the extra cost of wrapping your furniture. Cost us an additional $600 Pros: Good furniture wrapping Cons: fraudulent quotes, sloppy delivery, breakage, messy, more

Exellent service 2/4/2010

I used American Van Lines East for a move from Tampa to Clearwater on 2/3/10 and i was very pleased with the service. They didnt charge me to help pack my boxes and there were plenty it took us the better part of an hour. I also had antiqe lamps in the attic that are very fradigile and needed special packing which was also free of charge. It seems that you dont know how much have untill you move it. Despite the fact that i was not as prepared as i hoped to be on move day Joe simply took over where i left off and just said ""its what i do im here to healp"". I would definately recomend them after the service i recieved. Pros: Exellent service Cons: n/a more

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY 1/27/2010

If there was a no star I would have ranked this company with a no star rating. This company could be called a bait and switch company. I contracted them to move my daughter back to SC from Tampa. I contacted the company in August for a December move. I wanted to be sure to have enough time to talk to them and make sure that they would do the job and do it right. They sell you a bill of goods over the phone and then send you a contract. My biggest mistake was not getting everything in writing and instead believing the person I was in contact with over the phone. \r \r On the day of the move they show up and the foreman begins by telling me that he estimates that they are going to need more room in the truck then was allowed in the estimate. I then have to sign this paper authorizing them to charge me more if they go over the original estimate before they will load the truck. I call the company and talk to the owners wife who gets upset that I AM upset and hangs up on me then refuses to talk to me at all. I was in communication with her up until the Friday before our Monday move giving her the EXACT items that were to be moved but stupid me didnt know that they consider a queen bed ONLY the mattress and box springs and headboad and footboard are not included. Well I finally am able to talk to another rep there and he calms me down (I mean another $900 is alot for adding 2 headboard and footboards). I finally sign the papework after 2 hours of going back and forth and threatening to cancel the move and being told I would have to pay for it anyway for canceling on the day of the move. Things end up going well and we end up not moving a sofa and loveseat. \r \r Now the delivery of the items. What a nightmare. This company hires another 'budget mover' to deliver the items. They show up and start to unload everything into my driveway. One man on the truck the other in the driveway. Items are 'handed' and I use that term loosely from the man on the truck to the other guy. Imagine an washer being handed down to one person and they are not using a dolly. Then they begin to bring stuff into the house. One remains outside unwrapping the items by himself and the other brings stuff in. They did not know how to assemble the beds. I was starting to examine things due to the way they handled them and saw that the washer and dryer had been totally banged up and the knob was broken off the washer completely. I then witness the one guy drop a shelf unit on the ground and the corner gets smashed. I come inside and call and talk to Matt who is a rep for American Van Lines East. While on the phone with him one of the guys drops a table leg onto my hardwood floor damaging it. I tell Matt and he tells me to immediately take pics of all the damage that has been done to everything including the floor and email them to him. I do this only to receive an email back telling me I have to basically jump through hoops to submit a claim. I do all they ask and submit my claim. They deny all damages except the washer and dryer and will only pay a small amount. They deny the floor claim saying they spoke to the people who delivered and they denied doing the damage. I have now been sent a letter basically stating sign now or you wont get any money at all. \r \r DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY. I plan to report them to several agencies for their deceptive practices. If I was allowed more characters to write more I could go into a lot more detail.\r Cons: everything...from beginning to end more

Best service 11/12/2009

I would like to say that i moved many times in the past, usually moving myself. This time i decided on hiring a moving company.\r I moved from FL to GA.\r American Van Lines East contacted me as well as many other companies and i decided to hire American Van Lines East.\r I would like to say that i have never had a more courteous crew to move everything. My move from start to finish was done with speed +manners.\r All i can say that this was the best decision i have made!\r Thank you very much for a great experience.I would highly recommend American Van Lines East for any one that is in a need for amover. Pros: best moving company in town more

Great service - highly recommended 11/2/2009

I had to move for Tampa FL to Orlando, and I chose American Van Lines East.\r The service that they gave me to begin with through the phone to the end of my move was outstanding.\r They always answered all of my questions, they were polite and knowledgeable. \r The guys that came to move my items were professional and my furniture got to the destination safe.\r Thank you so much for a job well done, I will defiantly use your service in the future.\r more

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY - THEY ARE SCAMMERS/RIPOFF ARTISTS 9/18/2009

they charged double the quote and then held my belongings hostage until I paid the driver $450 extra, in cash. Started throwing everything out on the street until I gave him the cash. Cons: they charged double what they quoted, and charged more more

Stressful experience 5/13/2009

I would like to begin saying that I am extremely disappointed with the overall service received. I hired them to load a container that paid for to be shipped overseas with my household goods. The practice the company has is very unprofessional, and has demonstrated this to me in several ways. \r \r I requested movers to be at 8 am on my door and arrived at 9:12 am, claiming problems with the truck. Even though repeated times I indicated that the truck with the container that they had to load would only be free for 2hrs and that they would charge additional for every half hour. The truck was on time. \r \r They arrived with no packing materials contrary to how salesperson “Doug” said they would arrive, in the middle of the moving I had to run twice for additional supplies. I left all my important items for them to wrap since they were ""professionals"". I had to constantly ask the movers to wrap some of my furniture because they were not doing it, this meaning that they did not care at all for my belongings, so much for the professionals I was supposed to receive. \r \r They break my glass shelf and they still have the guts to respond with a letter that they don't feel responsible but that they were going to reimburse me anyway. An also insinuating that I broke it per what they had ask the foreman. \r \r Do you think that if I broke the glass myself I would go through the hassle of putting a claim. The form they have for claims as well as the information that is requested is designed to tire people and not have them claim a thing at all. Asking for information that is hard to estimate or find. Having it notarized ($10 charge in most places)? Oh, please! \r \r They wanted to settle the claim for $5.32, after all that they did and I had to send them another notarized form. What are they thinking! And I still had to pay for three hours of their time even though they did it for less because obviously the truck had to leave quickly, and I didn't want to pay extra for the truck. \r \r Dissapointed_consumer \r Tampa, Florida\r Cons: irresponsible on the field and office. more

American Van Lines East - Ripoff Artists! 3/16/2009

First, they claimed that our house is 1200 square feet, which it was not. Upon review of the measurements, our house was actually 925 square feet. We were charged $500 extra for supplies and they didn't even pack everything! We had to make 4 additional trips to the house with two cars in order to gather everything they did not take. I understand that they can not haul anything liquid but the amount of items that were left is completely ridiculous. Second, they were supposed to take a thirty minute lunch. They left our house at 2:37 p.m. and did not arrive at the new house until 3:17 p.m. - please note, the distance between the two locations is less than fifteen minutes drive time in a single direction. The lack of respect to time was also evident in constant texting on his phone by Paulie which my husband and I witnessed several times. They also had my husband sign the paper for a total of 9 hours for the job, but we did not receive 9 hours of work. We also repeatedly asked Joe not to smoke while in the truck with my families possessions, as my daughter and I have severe asthma. He continued to do so, regardless of our requests and finally just sat on the edge of the truck and called a five minute break. Upon unloading the truck, my husband and I assisted so that we could get back on our time schedule. Paulie shattered the entry way light fixture with a bookcase. When we inquired as to what we are supposed to do about it, Joe said to contact the website and file a claim. I called to lodge these complaints the next day once our phone service was connected and was told it has to all be in writing, which I did. Several items of significant value were damaged due to poor packing procedures (not wrapping items and placing heavy items on top of delicate/fragile items). Two of the items broken are irreplaceable due to age and being limited edition Disney Cast Member only items. The total for these damages is close to $1000. Our move was originally quoted at $1138 and it ended at $1709. I understand that there things that are unexpected but I can not fathom how it can be misquoted by $600. The customer service was nonexistent, efficiency was unheard of - We were overcharged, under delivered and incurred damages that their company is responsible for compensating. The response I received says they will compensate $6.60 based on their insurance coverage - this is robbery!! Pros: There are no pros to speak of Cons: Overcharged, Under-Delviered, Broken Valuables... more
