A-1 American Services

We had our hot water heater give out one weekend, which was evident by the pool of water surrounding it in our garage. No one else was available on short notice, so our home owners insurance authorized us to go elsewhere. After seeing the positive reviews we went with A-1 American, and I am glad we did. Bryan came out to service us, and I was extremely impressed how much pride he took in his work. He educated me on what he was doing as he went along, and worked with us through the insurance claim process to ensure everything was taken care of. Our new hot water heater looks great, and has been doing its job now for the past few month since its installation. more

Larry and John responded to my house to fix my garbage disposal. They were quick, friendly and professional. I would highly recommend this company. more

Bryan replaced our toilet last week and did an awesome job. He was very professional, explained everything to me as to why a new toilet would resolve our issue, and left the bathroom in perfect condition. I will call A-1 and ask for Bryan for any future plumbing needs. more

We had two slow bathroom sink drains and a broken toilet. I called early in the morning and Wyatt from A-1 was on the job by 2:00 that afternoon. After assessing the problem, gave me a detailed estimate and also offered a no-cost option to try to fix the toilet problem, which we tried. He was able to clear the drains. The next morning, we discovered that the toilet fix we had tried did not work, so I called again and they responded quickly to come out and fix the problem. As I write this, Wyatt is on his way. Very happy with the quick response and professional way I am being treated. This is the second time we have used A-1 (they installed a new water heater after hours 2 winters ago) and continue to be impressed. I'm not sure that they are the least expensive company, but I have complete confidence in their work and would definitely recommend them. more

I recommend A-1 America for plumbing services. They have excellent customer support and made it out to my home on the same day I called. While another company I called couldn't make it until 5 days later. Their plumber did an excellent job. more

When I think of professional service, a few companies come to mind. My water heater needed to be replaced, (a long time ago) and I found the paper advertisement that was folded in my work bag for some time. I called A-1 American, and was greeted with a kind and helpful person, who scheduled me for an immediate fix. The same day, I had the chance to talk with Tim, who came out, checked out my problem,explained exactly what needed to be done, secured the correct equipment, and went above and beyond normal courteous, knowledgeable and kind service. He checked to make sure everything was in place, built up the foundation, and checked a leaking washing machine hose; which needed to be clamped (so this would aid in keeping the floor dry,and to enhance my water heater enjoyment) installed a beautiful new water heater and instructed me on the maintenance, and to top it all off, cleaned up, and asked if I ever needed anything concerning the hook-up or other plumbing, heating or air concerns, he would be more than happy to assist. This is by far the worst company I have had to deal with for many reasons. We asked them to come out to assess the damage on our air conditioning unit. We had specifically told the worker that our dogs had chewed through a fuse and that was most likely the problem needing to be fixed. Instead he spent three hours looking for other problems, telling us that there was something else wrong with it. He brought out a second employee to help him look for a problem and finally told us that our inducer circuit board was broken and it would need to be fixed for $507.37. We did not have enough money at the time and needed to save up and told him we would call when we were ready to have it replaced. We went for THREE weeks in the hottest time of August with no air conditioning and it was painfully hot. We called someone out from a different company to have the air conditioning unit cleaned and were telling him why we had no air conditiong. He took five minutes to look and told us it was a broken fuse. He replaced it for free and within minutes we had air conditioning! He then told us that we don't even have an inducer circuit board like the previous A-1 American employee had stated and it is in fact a furnace drill board. This employee from a separate company told us that we were not the first customers he met that had received terrible service from A-1 American. I was upset that we paid $78 for an incorrect service charge and went three weeks of suffering without air conditioning because of misinformation from a professional. I am not sure if he had the intention to make an incorrect diagnosis that would charge us $507.37 for his own personal benefits or if A-1 American does not hire professionals that are capable of doing their job correctly.\r \r I wanted to speak with the manager of A-1 American about the poor service we had received from his company, and continued to call for 2 weeks without a response. I could only reach the front desk who continued to tell me day after day that he was not available and ""should get around to returning my call soon"". I was respectful to the front desk attendent everyday, and one day grew impatient with the lack of customer service and asked if I needed to show up personally and wait for the manager to get the chance to speak with him. She began to back talk to me in an extremely improfessional manner and eventually hung up on me. I was appalled and still have not received and phone call and do not think that I ever will until I take the matter into my own hands and do something about their lack of service.\r \r Terrible, terrible company. Terrible services all around. I would never recommend using this company. more

Larry and John where very professional they got the main drain clear but now my bath tub won't drain.they said it had to be replaced and would cost 826.00 they had already charged me 535.00 for 15mins work I think larry and john are very nice but the company charges are way to high.find out what the real cost is before you have them do anything a 78.00 service chage turned out to be 535.00 more

Do Not Use This Company for any HVAC services!! I moved back to Va Beach and our air conditioning stopped working the 1st week we were here. My husband was out of town, so I saw A-1 on ""Pros to Go"" and thought I ""must"" be able to trust this company since they were recommended and has won awards!! I also had a ""$250 off"" coupon. But NO!. After 3 days of trying to schedule an appointment (and several disconnects/hang ups) I got them scheduled to come out and look at our ac. The guy was over an hour and half late and spent less than 10 minutes (more like 4 or 5 minutes) to look at our ac. He told me that it would cost us $680.00 (and that was after the $250 coupon). My husband came down and read the ""appraisal"" and was furious! He went to Ferguson and bought a $11 compressor and put it in in 10 minutes! I even worked with an A-1 employee who said he made just under $300,000 last year because he said ""with what we are allowed to charge, we make a great profit""! I'll bet - in my case, even if they charged us $250/hour labor, he would have profited over $500!! \r This company is unethical, unprofessional, rude and almost criminal! If you read reviews on the internet (which I should have done first) you will see that everyone has the same complaints: 1. hugely over priced; 2. horrible customer service; 3. lie about that needs to be fixed; and 4. will charge you extra to fix THIER mistakes!!\r I seriously warn anyone who thinks about hiring this company...DON'T!!! more

We had a plumbing emergency (our water in our shower/bath wouldn't shut off. My husband called A-1 American and got ahold of a technician right away. Within an hour, they showed up at our house ready to diagnose the problem. Both Larry & John were very professional, and explained everything that they were doing through the whole process. Both techs went above and beyond in their customer service, technical abilities, and made both myself and my husband both know that we were in ""good hands"". \r \r I cannot praise these 2 techs enough and would like to praise the company for having these 2 men as they are a huge asset to the company. Whenever I need help again, I definitely will call A-1 American as the company has very much impressed me! I will recommend this company to everyone I know! more

I am very disappointed with our recent service call from A-1 American. Our AC quit working and the guy shows up and says it needs a thorough cleaning and that it's $1100 but he's going to give us a discount down to $800. It was hot so we agreed. All he did was take the cover off, brush off some dust and spray some stuff in there. It took all of 20 minutes. My husband confronted him about the outrageous price and he said he'd recharge it for free even thought he's not supposed to and gave him some story about telling his bosses that it fell over in the truck and leaked out, but then he wrote it on the invoice. We paid him because he was very loud and rude and have been trying to call and talk to someone about the price gouging. We checked around and we shouldn't have been charged more than $440. The guy was only there for maybe an hour. We've been trying to call to get the situation fixed but no one has called us back for the past week. One guy we spoke with said that we were definitely charged too much and that he would have his boss call us. Well, his boss called today and said that we should've been charged $1600! That is unacceptable!!! I have reported A-1 to the Better Business Bureau and I encourage everyone to go elsewhere for repairs. more

I foolishly agreed to let A-1 American install 2 thermostats in my water heater, the price quoted was $486.79. No being a plumber, and needing hot water, I agreed. The plumber left, came back in an hour with the parts, and loosened 8 screws, slid out the old parts, slid in the new parts, put the cover back on and turned the breaker. Total time using a screwdriver, maybe 15 minutes. The company is outrageous in it's pricing and I would not recommend them to anyone. AVOID THIS COMPANY, unless you have lots of money you no longer want. In addition they stated the price of a new water heater would have been $1700.00, which I did research and found to be a total fabrication. more

Saturday morning and we find out we are unable to flush ANY of our toilets (or run water)... Called another service company and were told they ""may get to us"" that day, or, more likely, the following morning... Um, we couldn't flush our toilets!! Anyway, A-1 saved the day, and most likely, my marriage. The technician was unable to come out right away, but kept in constant contact, helping me trouble shoot what the issue may have been. When he did arrive, he was on the problem immediately (bad grease clog in the main drain, running the length of the house), and took care of it quickly and professionally with NO mess! Will absolutely use this company again, if the need arises! Thank you A-1! more

Shawn was quick to answer my before hours emergency call. Even though I was a little frantic when I called, he put me to ease over the phone right away. He called when he was on his way, just as he said he would. Got here in hardly any time at all. He explained what the issue was, how he was going to fix it and what to do if it happens again in the future, and his recommendations if it happens again in the future. He didn't just come in, fix and run or try to charge us for something crazy. Went over all of the options. He was extremely helpful, polite and professional. Even my husband who is very picky had nothing but great things to say! Shawn and A-1 are our ""go-to's"" from this point forward. more

Thumbs down for these people who offer false advertisement about 2hrs service, and they leave an elderly man without heat. more

We called A-1 for our furnace. I do not recommend using this company...EVER. Total rip off. The tech named James was horrible at communicating the problem that was really going on. He way over charged for a job he did in literally 5 minutes using a part that cost $10. He told us he was fixing one thing and turned around and said he was fixing something else. He left the old part just lying on my washing machine when he left and he did not put the sides back on the furnace when he was done. Left it open while it was running and that is a big no! I had to put the sides back on myself. The furnace sounded lousy even after he fixed what said needed to be fixed and only a couple weeks later, our furnace has died again. When called to complain, he informed us that sure he'd come check to see if something wasn't done right but that he'd charge us an estimation fee just to do. I will never use this company again and I do not recommend you use them either. Terrible service...total rip off....terrible company. more

I had A-1 come to my house last night to fix a bathtub. They worked around my hours and did great work fixing the bathtub. My two complaints, after seeing what was wrong and needed to be fixed I was quoted $375 for the repairs. This was far more than it should have been for the little amount of work that it took. Even though I wasn't thrilled about the price, I bit the bullet and decided to have them go ahead and do the work so I knew it would be done correctly. My biggest complaint: I told the plumber that I had a coupon from online that gave me 15% off all plumbing repairs. He looked at me and said, ""See, the thing is I already gave you a huge discount"" as he shrugged his shoulders. First, that is a lie!!!! It took 20-30 minutes and $10 dollars worth of materials to fix my bathtub. (The piece that was messed up was brand new as he pointed out to me when giving me the qoute.) Second, how can you not honor a coupon after a quote is given? If I said I had the coupon prior to receiving my quote, would my cost have been over $400???? Unfortunately for A-1, the fact that my shower is fixed does not out weight the fact their people lacked integrity during my interaction with them last night. I will not ever be doing business with them again. I will stick to small local private owned plumber businesses from now on. more
