Greedy Crooks! 7/29/2014

Got my dog evaluated today by Dr. Steinberg, the news is bad. Then I see I paid a $66 boarding charge...Really? You would think $130 for a little bit of his time would be enough. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 6/9/2013

Very expensive does not mean the best. They were nice but they took a day to figure out that my vomitting puppy had an obstruction. They first gave her anti-vomitting meds. Then a day and half later she was so full of fluid that she aspirated stomach contents into her lungs during surgery. She died two days later. We were all devestated. more

Aimee Is Happy Again 10/7/2012

VCA Review\r \r I am surprised at the complaints about the cost of the services at VCA. This is a referral hospital, which is like a human going to the Mayo Clinic. The VCA personnel are specialists and like all specialists in modern medicine, they use expensive machines to do their work. If you think a CAT machine is cheap, I suggest you do some online research. You won?t find such equipment at your neighborhood vet office.\r \r Our eleven-year-old Dalmatian, Aimee, had a serious neck problem. That was apparent from the x-rays our regular vet had taken. Dr. Steinberg of VCA looked at the x-rays, did a thorough examination then told me the options. He said surgery was the best choice, he gave me his reasons and he gave me a ballpark figure for the cost. We had been medicating Aimee for two months for her pain and I questioned Dr. Steinberg about continuing with that regimen. He gave me reasons why it would not be a long-term solution. I questioned him about surgery for an eleve more

Best Vet Care in Area 7/12/2012

Although I live closer to an emergency vet service in DC, i have found myelf choosing VCA for all my animals' emergency services and for specialized care.\r I first went to VCA 8 yrs ago when my 14 yr old golden was diagnosed with cancer. The treatment he received was first class and the bed side manner of Dr Conway and her assistant made this terrible time in our lives more tolerable\r Dr Conway has since become the internist managing our other golden's multiple illnesses and has treated he with such excellent vet care that Lexi just turned 18 last month!\r We have used the emergency services for our Chow and for our two cats. Once I drove three hours from the beach to have one of our cats treated at VCA Emergency Care rather than going to a vet hospital one hour away. I truly love my animals and have found the best Vet Hospital in the area\r I refer everyone I know to them more

Greediness instead of caring! 4/10/2012

It was an easy thing.... My German shepherd stole some chocolates. Unfortunately it was not the first time, and I did not have any peroxide, and took her there. $ 1,000 later and after an ultrasound (it was chocolate!) , she threw up but they wanted to keep her overnight just to be sure she was going to be allright, saying that she could have heart issues. The vet tech was quite snotty like if I were an idiot when she was talking to me. Just did not like them. DO NOT SIGN ANY PAPER GIVING THEM THE RIGHT TO DO WHATEVER THEY WANT! They take advantage of the fact that you are in distress to charge you whatever they can think of! I did not listen to them, but took her to the Emergency Clinic in Frederick, where I should have gone anyway, and they checked her out, and her heart rate was normal. more

Unprofessional 2/7/2012

On our first time at VCA, the ER vet didn't really listen to me resulting in tests (over $2K) that were in hindsight unnecessary. Every time I asked questions, she was rolling her eyes at me and sighing. She eventually recommended a procedure that she pawned off on someone in internal medicine (which turned out to be the best thing). He actually listened to me and redid the ultrasound (free of charge). He concluded the procedure she recommended was unnecessary and would actually do more harm than good. Unfortunately, that was his last day working there I think.\r \r My dog did have surgery that night. Her time in the ICU went okay and she got the level and quality or care you'd expect. Eventually she was moved out of ICU and her care got worse. They were pumping a ridiculous amounts of fluid in her. Every visit her bedding and her fur were soaked with urine. The tech would say things like oh she just keeps knocking her bowl over. Tee-hee. I would have to shower and change clothes after more

WAY overpriced!!! Compare $'s/services first! 1/21/2011

Check the cost before you commit!!!! This is not the only emergency vet care in the area. They are taking advantage of clients in a time of urgency by charging enormous prices and performing extra tests that are very likely unnecessary. VCA should be the last place you visit when there are no other options. more

Lousy Customer Service 2/24/2010

First, Dr. Brower, one of the radiologists, is incredible. I highly recommend him. However, I had an experience that I would not want anyone else to go through with one of the other specialists. I fasted my pet for 13 hours. I was going to be 20 - 30 mins. late for a 1.5 hour appt. due to car trouble They said if I was going to be more than 10 mins. late they would not see me. Having been the director of a specialty clinic in a hospital, I am appalled that given the length of the appointment for an evaluation (no procedure), an accommodation would not have been made. I even checked with veterinarian friends who were all shocked that I was told not to keep my appointment. One shook his head in disbelief, another said it was just awful customer service. Suffice it to say, I rescheduled elsewhere. If I treated any of my human patients the way they treated my pet, I would have been called up in front of the director of my hospital and rightly so. more

Saved my dog, caring staff, excellent fast treatment 11/2/2008

I cannot praise VCA enough for how they have helped my dog.\r \r My golden retriever developed bloat and was dying. I brought her in to VCA at 1am. By 2am she was x-rayed, diagnosed, and in surgery with a specialist. She spent 2 days in the ICU. I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about when she said they were mistreating dogs; perhaps she is just unfamiliar with how dogs respond as they come out of anesthesia after surgery which does sound very pained and awful. I was back in the ICU while my dog was there. They let me sit in her kennel with her for as long as I wanted. They cooked her turkey, offered peanut butter on a stick, and provided all kinds of things to me as I tried to get her eating again. The staff was extremely caring and considerate of me, my dog, and the other owners and dogs there. \r \r The price was expensive, as is to be expected for the kind of treatment she received, and I did not think it was unreasonable. I wouldn't want to go to a discount emergency vet more

VCA saved my dogs life 4/22/2007

I will be forever grateful to VCA for saving Snowflake's life. After initially being diagnosed with Lyme Disease and on antibiotics by her primary vet, my dog developed an extremely high fever several days later. I took her to VCA as an emergency. They admitted her overnight to monitor her. I was a little worried because it would be expensive, but I wanted what was best for her. While she was there, they did an xray of her abdomen because she seemed to be a little bothered when palpated. Nothing I really noticed myself. I thought it was better to be safe than sorry even though it was going to cost more money. It turns out that there was a little something on the xray and after having it read by a radiologist, they suggested that I bring her back in for a repeat xray as well as an ultrasound just to be sure. I thought that the tests would turn out ok because she did not have a fever any more and she was acting like her normal, crazy self. I again thought about the money but knew I would more

Went there once and won't go back 2/19/2007

I don't think they are bad as the previous review stated. I do think that they are more interested in running up your bill than just the welfare of the pet, and that's the sad part!\r \r There are at least 2 other similar clinics around DC and they are by far much better. more

Terrible and SICK institue THEY ABUSE ANIMALS 2/11/2007

After waiting over 30 minutes for the vet to come out, even though I was the ONLY person in the entire place, he finally came stumbling out apparent to be high on drugs. He was completly INCOMPETENT! I went into the back area it was a NIGHTMARE..animals CRYING for help..and I overheard them saying completly SICKENING things about the pets. I asked if i could have my dog back and he just handed him to me. I left and he then called my mother numerous times at 5:30am after he had already talked to me..THEY ARE SICK DISTUGSTING PPL DOING EVIL THINGS!! more

Down-to-earth expert help 7/2/2005

While I wish that circumstances had not required us to get to know the folks at this VCA, I want to spread the word that sick pets will receive the highest level of care here. Our dog had a rare cancer which VCA ultimately determined to be inoperable... but they took EVERY avenue to try to help before arriving at that decision. The ultrasound tech stayed past quitting time AND made do with the cardiac ultrasound machine (her usual machine was broken) so that we wouldn't have to come back another day. The thing that really sold me, though, was the surgeon. I nearly fainted when he GOT DOWN ON THE FLOOR with our dog! That action was simultaneously egoless and selfless. If our dog's condition had been operable, VCA has 24/7 intensive care services -- a higher level of care than even an emergency clinic can provide. (However, PLEASE remember they are NOT equipped to accept emergencies; intake is NOT open around the clock, just intensive care for existing patients! If you have an em more
