MY PUPPY, BEAR, DIED AFTER BEING TREATED HERE!!!! 11/23/2013

I brought my puppy, Bear, here. Veterinarian Carolyn Remsberg had prescribed and administered, and caused to be administered, 23mg of Cerenia to Bear in one day. He died some 2 hours later. When I called to get her license number, or a way to find her license number, she was "unreachable." I used the information I had about her to find out why searching for "Remsberg" in the State vet database came up with a nursing license that expired in the 90's. Her license number DOES NOT come up under "Remsburg" in the Delaware State veterinarian database. It does come up searching "Gurnee-Remsburg" or "Gurnee." \r \r I also found Pfizer's application for FDA approval of Cerenia: "The Freedom of Information Summary Original New Animal Drug Application NADA 141-263 "Cerenia" (Maropitant Citrate) Injectable Solution," which had some interesting information regarding the administration of Cerenia in dogs. Study #1460N-60-01-585 by Dr. Michael C. Savides concluded that Cerenia in dogs under 16 more

Very Happy Here 8/26/2010

I have a cat that was a stray. He got very sick immediately with pancreatitis, which is fairly deadly to cats. He was deathly ill. Dr. Christa saved his life. She continued to check up on him long after he was healed. The other thing I like about this hospital is that they have state of the art diagnostic equipment.\r I now have a kitten I just adopted. My regular vet thinks he has stomatitis (very bad gingivitis and teeth). I want a second opinion on his condition, and I trust them to make the right decision. I will probably continue to take him there, even though it's a 30 minute drive. more

Truly World Class 8/21/2010

This vet is amazing. We took our 8 month old puppy after she had been throwing up and the doctor was excellent. She was extremely informative, gentle and treated our situation with the urgency we hope every vet would. I recommend this vet to anyone who loves their pet. This is a remarkable place.\r The price of the services may shock you. However, the vet is giving you what the "Best" treatment would be. There are always options that come at lower prices that they are willing to discuss with you, so just ask. For example, our pet needed a bland diet for 10 days. They would have charged us $75 for the diet food, but when we mentioned that the price of the care was out of our budget, they suggested we not buy the diet and make our own chicken and rice at home. So, they are willing to work with you to lower the cost and still provide the best care. more

I like them 7/14/2010

I'm not sure if the people who wrote bad reviews went to the same vet that I did. Newark VCA at 1360 Marrows Rd.\r Newark, DE 19711? They are very nice to me and my cat (18 yrs old).Super nice. The regular visits are 60 bucks and emergencies are 128. Without going into to too much detail about my cat and turning this review into a book I will just say this; they always recommend expensive x-rays for everything, even when I took my cat in for constipation (I knew what caused it so no need for an x-ray). Decide whether an x-ray is too much and decline if you feel it's unnecessary. They charge to sedate your animal to get x-rays. Ask if they can try to get the x-ray( if needed) without sedation. \r \r My cat recently has had trouble with her arm due to arthritis. The estimate was $616 for 2 x-rays and blood work. That was too much. After explaining that too the vet and talking over cheaper options, she recommend I call around to other vets, gave me a copy of her blood work, told me wh more

Excellent care 12/31/2009

I must say that I have been a client with VCA Newark since 1995 or so. We have used them for each of our cats and we have had only one complaint about the service that we received in all of that time. We voiced our complaint at the time and the office manager worked with us to resolve the issue (pricing misunderstanding). We have used them to treat cats with cardiomyopathy (heart enlargement & blood clots), cancer, renal failure, heart murmurs, miscellaneous cuts from fights, food sensitivities, and kidney/bladder stones. Throughout all of the issues that we have brought to them at all times of the day and night, the staff has been caring and up-front. Pricing has been open, honest, and fair and the treatment has been top-notch. On those occasions where the doctors at VCA Newark have been overmatched by what our cats have presented them, they have not been afraid to refer us to other specialty units, such as VSCD or U.Penn. At no point have the staff (any of them) ever treated u more

Greed rules at the VCA 9/24/2008

My pet is still in the hospital there and I am hoping he will be well enough to be released soon. ( I sincerely hope that the vets are competent because we have already spent over $7K and have spent more time discussing estimates than our pet's condition.) The COMPANY is plagued by poor service and an apparently overworked staff. If we were not in an emergency situation I would have walked out the door and sought care elsewhere. At this time, I offer one star and will update my review if warranted at a later date. more

Wonderfully compassionate and responsive 4/11/2008

I am not sure what anyone on here is talking about. After reading these reviews I truly felt compelled to write my own. My dog was a patient of VCA for his long life of fifteen years. When he reached his senior citizen stage of life, they were always supportive and responsive. We were given much support and help in deciding how to handle his arthritis and cushings disease. The vet was fabulous and I believe my dog loved her as much as anyone. He never suffered and the vet always made sure we were aware of his situation (she promised she would tell us if he was suffering so we could make the appropriate decision). One night, his hips finally gave out and he was in tremendous pain. They made an appointment for us the next day. The techs helped us carry him from the car inside. They sat with us while we waited for the vet. When it was time, she allowed me to be in the room and was so compassionate and sympathetic to the situation. They allowed us to stay with him as long as we more

Too expensive and deceptive 7/16/2007

In a recent visit with a very ill, elderly cat, the vet/staff did not fully disclose all the costs involved in keeping the cat overnight. In addition, the vet insisted on doing a second expensive test. The cat had to be euthanized in the end. Much of the expense could have been spared if the vet had been frank about how sick the cat was after the first test. She took advantage of my daughter's caring heart and encouraged her to run up a bill she cannot afford to pay. My daughter had to pay several hundred dollars before leaving the cat and now has an additional bill several times that--and her cat is gone. If not illegal, the way they practice veterinary medicine is unethical. more

An "inside" response to the "insider" 11/21/2006

To the unknown person who is a supposed insider, I take great offense to your remarks about the technical staff at VCA Newark. The nurses and technicians at that hospital are fantastic, not horrible. They work hard and are dedicated to what they do. I worked hard to select good technicians with a lot of experience and a solid knowledge base. It is a privilege to have worked with them. I would trust the care of my personal pets in the hands of any of the nurses there. more

Insider's point of view 11/19/2006

I used to work for VCA Newark Animal Hospital and I ran far away from it about eight months ago. I can attest to the fact that the company cares about the all-mighty dollar. As an employee, the benefits are horrible, the pay is horrible, and most staff they hire are horrible. For the largest veterinary company in the country, they put absolutely nothing into their staff. There is no training. All they care about is hiring the cheapest applicant possible. For a practice that claims itself to be an emergency and a specialty practice, you would think that they would hold their standards higher than others in the caliber of staff they want. Some doctors are OK. Two of the emergency doctors are miserable beings. I have seen them refuse to treat patients just because the owner did not have enough money. I have seen them turn an animal away when it was having seizures just because they didn't want to see it. One of the emergency doctors will outright say that he is going to treat a more

They should be shut down 11/12/2006

I had the misfortune of taking my dog here last night who was put to sleep. While dealing with the seriousness of my dog's illness, I was subjected to the incompetence & rudeness of the women who work here. There was more importance in getting the computer printer to work to process my credit card than the circumstances which brought me here. There was no courtesy or respect for my dog who was suffering and I had to listen to the technician go on and on about how she had worked 2 shifts...like I care about her problems? Anyway, if anyone from the VCA organization ever reads these emails, I pray to God they fire these people before anyone else has to suffer the indignity and disrespect of these people. Heavens only knows how they treat the animals who come there. All this said, I did find the vet who treated my dog to be very kind and supportive. But the women out front should be fired. PROS: The vet was very nice CONS: The staff is horrible more

BEWARE! SCARY! 10/19/2006

It must be because it's owned by a big corporation, but this place is horrible. I mean, the doctors are OK, some are really good. But the "techs" have MUCH to be desired! They must just hire anyone who walks in off the street. I don't think any of them have gone to school and are licensed for what they are doing. Is this legal? I don't want these incompetent people being responsible for MY beloved pet! It's a nice big facility, but who cares, if the people who work there don't know what they're doing? Don't even get me started on the prices- RIDICULOUS! Receptionists are very rude and unhelpful as well. Don't try calling there, because you'll be on hold forever! I will never ever go back, and want to warn everyone:\r DON'T GO HERE! There are many other options for emergency vet care! more

Only in an Emergency!!! 9/14/2006

The Newark VCA is overpriced and understaffed. On my second and last visit the Tech brought my kitten back in after a blood test and he was bleeding profusely. She wouldn't even clean him up until I demanded to see the vet. In addition, the vet promised to call me back with those blood test results the next day. I never heard back and had to badger the receptionist to get a call back. I called around to find another vet in the area taking new patients only to find no one available. My Aunt called her vet and they were kind enough to see us. PROS: Availability CONS: Overpriced and understaffed more

Only good for emergencies if you must! 2/6/2006

I took my dog here when she was running after a toy, hit her head on a rock and started seizing. It was the weekend and my regular vet wasn't open. This place was AWFUL! They did a "check up" while I was there without informing me that it was an extra charge. They told me she had arthritis. The bill ended up being almost $400 and they didn't even do anything for my dog except put her on meds that weren't related or even necessary. I found that out after taking her to my own vet when they opened in the morning. PROS: Good in an absolute emergency, I guess CONS: Where do I start... more

newark vca 11/23/2005

They are a nice hospital but some vets are better than others. They told me my cat had cancer for a year until another vet said he didn't. They also charge a fortune but don't they all!! The place is big and alot of parking. It is often hard to get an appointment right away but they always have an expensive emergency visit available. more
