Excellent vet for cats 6/11/2012

VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia has cared for our cat for 8 years. They have always been both professional and caring -- just the right mix of facts and compassion. The front desk staff are all cat lovers and are very understanding.\r \r Over the years our cat has had both routine check-ups as well as more serious procedures, including having teeth removed. The doctors and techs at VCA Cat Hospital have always treated our cat well, and he has come through wonderfully.\r \r I recommend VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia unconditionally for any cat owner in the Philadelphia area who is looking for a vet to care for their cat. more

They provide the best care possible for my cat 11/22/2011

My cat Pepper is the world to me, so I want the best care possible for me. And VCA fits the bill. I don't know how expensive they are to the vets, but when they are wonderful as Dr. Simpson is, price doesn't matter that much. Though Pepper will never love the vet, I like them and think they do a great job of examining him and make sure he's getting proper care. To this day, when people see my cat, they comment on how healthy he looks. While some of it is due to the care and love I provide, I credit Dr. Simpson and VCA as well. If you love your cat and that cat is everything to, then go to them. Only negative is parking. You pretty much have to park in one of those expensive lots, but where they are located, it would be hard to have their own parking lot. And again, like price, when a doctor is as good as Dr. Simpson is and the high quality of care is provided for a loved one as Pepper, none of these complaints matter. more

Caring and compassionate 8/23/2011

I was extremely satisfied with the care, compassion & concern I experienced from all the staff. My cat was very sick & my regular vet was not open. I took him to the VCA where he was treated like a long standing patient. Dr Bohn was very responsive to my questions and concerns, answering them on a Sunday- her day off. I ended up having to put him down and couldn't have imagined doing it anywhere else. I will be switching vets & taking my other cat to the VCA from now on. more

VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia is the WORST!! 9/12/2009

I stopped taking my cats to VCA around 2002 after it was taken over by some money-grubbing corporation and the quality of care went way down. Prior to the corporate takeover, I was very happy with VCA. Unfortunately, I made the bad decision to take my very sick cat there recently when I couldn't get an appointment at my regular vet. My cat obviously needed medical attention right away, but I wasn't able to get an appointment at VCA until near closing time. The vet was not able to determine what was wrong with him until she ran tests on him. She was not able to send the blood work to the lab until the following morning and would not have gotten the results until who knows when. It was very clear that my cat was very sick, but instead of doing what is best for my cat and suggesting that I take him to the emergency room right way, she actually let me walk out of there. When I got home, my cat had gotten so bad that I decided to take him to Penn Vet Hospital, where the doctor told me wit more

Expert Cat Care - Great Docs, Techs & Staff 11/20/2008

All three vets (Drs Bohn, Simpson and Kurpel) at VCA are wonderful caring doctors who know and love kittens and cats. The hospital is equipped and staffed to take on serious illnesses/ conditions and to perform surgery. Within a week of adopting my kitten Bella, she developed fading kitten syndrome requiring intensive care (special warm room and bedding), round the clock fluids and small hand feedings every two hours for a week. Bella recovered and is now a strong healthy 2-year old, 10+ pounds fluffy diva. I also now have a second cat, Tesse, and both of my "girls" receive all their care and treatment at VCA. Great vet services are not inexpensive, but neither are the costs associated with running a first class cat hospital in a major city. To their credit, VCA recommends that owners consider purchasing pet insurance. They are very good about signing and providing documentation for claim forms. Also, I have observed VCA providing people the ability to pay in installments. My experienc more

Don't believe what you read... 11/4/2008

After reading some of these reviews I was skeptical about VCA, but I made an appointment on the recommendation of a friend and I'm so glad I did. Everyone at the hospital was really nice and I was able to make an appointment right away for a kitten I found. This is my first cat so I had lots of questions which the doctor answered for me. She gave me a list of things he would need to be healthy. She even gave me her e-mail address so I could contact her with any questions. The only down side was that it was a bit on the expensive side (about $250 for the exam, shots, worming, and testing for worms and leukemia). I'm still glad that I went and I would definitely recommend Dr.Simson. Pros: Got appointment right away, nice hospital staff, office is really cute Cons: Expensive, no on site parking (but you get a discount at the garage next door) more

Expensive and not worth it 9/11/2008

I started going to the VCA cat hospital in January of this year, and since that time I have been there 3 times for the exact same problem. My cat had an infection on his paw around his nail beds. The first time we went, the vet didn't even swab it (to check for bacteria), told me to clean it and sent me on my way. Well, needless to say, the problem got worse (even with daily cleanings), so we went back a 2nd time. This time the paw was swabbed, and the vet said that it was full of bacteria, so she gave me a liquid antibiotic and some medicated wipes. Well, that didn't work either, so again, back we went. This time we got a pill and some different wipes. It's now September, my cat still has an infected paw, and I've spent about $500 on this. I am frustrated beyond words, and all I want is for someone to take this problem seriously and for my cat to get better. I wouldn't mind paying $120-$160 for a visit if they were helping my cat, but unfortunatly, they are not, so we will NOT be back, and I would not reccomend them to any of my friends. Pros: Good hours Cons: Expensive, don't seem to care enough to get to the root of the problem more

The Best Ever 2/23/2008

I have been going to the Cat Hospital of Philadelphia since before it was VCA. They treated problems other vets ignored or mistreated. One vet treated me like I was an "overprotective mom" or a "cat hypochondriac." Not at VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia. The staff listens closely to what I say and make recommendations. The choice of treatment is always up to me. I have never been asked to do unnecessary tests or procedures. The doctors have caught many underlying problems before they became serious. more

Worth every penny 2/12/2008

After reading some of the reviews about unnecessary expensive tests, I was a bit reluctant to try this hospital. However, I found myself in need of a vet one day when I needed a health certificate to fly and my usual vet was out of town (very annoying btw). I called VCA and they gave me an appointment that day. \r \r The front desk staff was very nice and the nurse went over everything with me before the doctor came in. The doctor was very friendly and thorough. She pointed out things that my usual vet hadn't noticed (like really bad dental disease). She recommended blood work and even though my cat seemed healthy, I agreed to it. \r \r Guess what--my apparently healthy cat had kidney disease and high blood pressure. We started medication, changed her food and got her teeth cleaned. So when people complain about the cost (and yes, my visit wasn't cheap) I tell them you get what you pay for. VCA may be more expensive, but only because they offer the best care. I would never go an more

Kindness Counted 12/10/2007

We recently awoke to the sad reality that we had to put one of our cats to sleep. She was old and in failing health, and having never experienced this before, we called several places to determine what to do.\r The folks at the VCA Cat Hospital treated us with kindness and took the time to answer all of our questions so that we could be sure about the decision which we were making. After selecting this vet hospital (over the others which we had initially contacted), we made an appointment, met with a doctor, and ultimately she "walked us through" what needed to be done.\r Sadly, we have lost one of our feline friends, but we were very grateful for the kindness shown to us, as well as to our cat, in her final hours.\r We would highly recommend this Cat Hospital in Philadelphia. more

Amazing experience 11/19/2007

I found a stray, obviously sick cat on the street outside my house, and called every vet in the area to try to get an emergency appointment. The only vet that agreed to take me was VCA. \r They immediately recognized there was a problem and suggested several routes I could take. As she was a stray and I have no money, they agreed to do the bare minimum of testing and xrays...for a minimum price (I have two other cats, so know the basics that vets charge). \r The result was that the poor stray was pregnant and having severe complications - the VCA performed emergency surgery on her THAT day, once again for a great price. I was also given the opportunity to pay in installments. \r Following the surgery, they explained everything to me in very understandable terms, and they followed up with me regularly over the next few weeks.\r I have nothing but good things to say about the VCA. more

Unbelievable 11/15/2007

These people are Terrible with a capital T. I can't believe the way my cat and I were treated. In order to get my cat on the table, the vet tech threw a blanket over her and then picked her up with her forearms to keep the blanket over her head. What? This is a domestic housecat! Then, needless to say, my cat was both startled and scared, so the vet decided the best thing to do was to put a face mask on her! I have had this cat for 10 years and never in all of our visits to the vet, has she ever needed a blanket, let alone a face mask. When I went to help, the vet cautioned me (in a particularly scolding tone) to step away, lest I end up in the hospital. What?? You would have thought that I had brought in a wild boar. Additionally, after that whole ordeal was over and I paid the exorbitant bill, without a please, thank you, or go to hell from the cashier, I received a voicemail message letting me know that the cat is dying and, three days later have still not heard back (after calling and once again speaking with the curt cashier) from a doctor. I can't believe that people who make a living working with animals could treat anyone or anything the way we were. Pros: able to get a same day appointment Cons: terrible treatment, girl at the counter looks likes she is ready to bust her brains out more

As good as it gets! 6/8/2007

If you take your cat to a vet in center city, hello! If you can't afford to pay for your cats medical care but you can afford to live in center city maybe you never should have had a cat.\r \r It angers me a lot when people blame a business for being "corporate". I like that they have rules and protocols to follow.\r \r If I heard a staff member say anything inappropriate about how they THINK it's all about the money, I'd be concerned that there was something very wrong with the staff member. Sounds like they have a bad attitude to me.\r \r I really don't understand! You find out your cat is in good health and all you can do is complain about the price. I've spent thousands on my cats medical care and know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And a lot cheaper too. more

Cold and corporate 5/1/2007

I'm not complaining about the charges, you get what you pay for in terms of medicine, same as in a human hospital. My complaint is that the doctors and tech staff are always different, and that I've actually heard people who work there complain that it's all about the money, and they know the doctors push procedures that aren't needed. If you're treating your staff that badly that they warn clientelle away, you're doing something wrong. \r \r I will be avoiding corporate hospitals in the future. Some of the doctors and staff here are really nice, but ultimately what they do is dictated by quotas and corporate policy. Boo. more
