Poor Service; Bad Food 3/7/2012

Bakery goods are stale. Quiche is not made fresh daily. Some of the desserts are ordered frozen! My burger was undercooked and very raw in the middle. The owners are very rude to their customers. Service is young and inexperienced. I actually saw a waitress leave her shift and grab a tart from the baked goods shelf when she thought no one was looking. Bathroom was dirty. Avoid at all costs. more

What Service?? 5/11/2010

I very much agree with those who say the service has gone down the tubes since it re-opened. It seems like they are more interested in their bakery area than they are in their restaurant area. When you first go in it seems like you're a bother to them more than anything else. I will not be going back. Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Horrible service, mean staff 11/21/2009

Have been in Galveston since 7 years and am a faculty at UTMB. This is the first time I have felt racism in America and that too at Sunflower bakery. Had been there with a friend of different color and we ate, payed the bill and were just finishing our coffee when another waitress than the one who had served us comes over that you need to leave since we need the table while there were other tables around which were empty. We said that is it because we are done and she was like ""no we just need the table and you need to leave"". We even asked that do you want it for paying customers to that she replied yes. So we asked that we will then order something so bring the menu to which she showed us a face and then still kept on saying we need to leave and how long do we plan to stay here. This I feel was outrageous and this is something which has really disappointed me. If anyone who reads this, especially the community of UTMB, this place needs to be banned from our events and our business. Pros: So so food Cons: Free racism served more

AMAZING! 7/23/2009

This place was amazing! i am still salivating over their dream bar. The bakery was filled with locals old and young. at once you feel like you are surrounded by family. The eighty someting year old ladies sitting next to our table chatting and laughing made me feel at home. I had the spinach salad that tasted amazing, there were fresh bacon bits in it along with smooth fresh mushrooms. My friend had a turkey burger that was delicious as well. The bun on the burger had been baked that morning. After seeing a lady at the next table order a head sized piece of pie, we decided to stop at the bakery part of the resaurant. We narrowed down our selection from 20 different pasteries to 3. We had a delicious scone and a dream bar-which was delicious- and a blondie. Out of the selection the dream bar won favored by far! I suggest this restaurant any time! it is amazing! more

Best Breakfast 4/1/2009

We had breakfast here in the post-Ike setting. Of course, everything is new and sparkling. The quiche was excellent and accompanied by a generous fruit plate. The pancake thrilled the 6 year old. The breakfast bacon and egg on croissant pleased my husband. The service was friendly and, while not prompt, adequate. The place was full by the time we left at about 9 a.m. to walk the Strand and see the recovery efforts, completely happy. more

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE! 8/21/2008

I'm casting aside all of the nightmarish stories I've been privy to from former employees on this one and basing my review off of my own unfortunate encounters with the owners of this mediocre establishment. Pros: tomato basil soup (on days that its not scorched) Cons: OWNERSHIP more

best chicken piccati ever 5/4/2008

I've eaten at this restaurant many times and everything is good. Would it be possible to have the recipe for the chicken piccati? more

What a dump :( Avoid at all costs 4/10/2008

Gosh, can I give them 1/4 of a star? :/ I have been a regular customer up until today, where I have encountered the worst service of my life. I felt like I was being singled out and passed over when I have ordered my food. Gee maybe I can speak to the owner, hmmmm, maybe not, since I won't be ever coming back to this joint, which is, like other reviewers hinted at, too pretentious for its own good, and the food is mediocre at best. And guess what, today, no Italian rolls? Hmmm....it is a bakery, right? Or, wait, a cafe......I get it, that allows them to overcharge prices and underdeliver. Pros: Hmmm...none Cons: Service, prices, island attitude more

Customer Service Nightmare 4/9/2008

Today's visit was the absolute worst experience I've had in a year at Sunflower. I was in a party of 9....large group, I know. The restaurant was busy, but not really any busier than normal. Since I go to lunch with business associates, its always a better option to split checks and we take advantage of it whenever possible. The menu does state that they do not separate checks, but 9.7 times out of 10, the waitress asks if we want separate checks. Today was no exception. However, the waitress came back 15 minutes after offering to split the check, only to tell us she didn't have time to split the check. So, we all took out our credit cards and wrote our individual totals on the back of the receipt. When she realized what we were doing, she pitched a fit! Told us that there was no way she could run separate cards. Since this is a pretty standard practice at most restaurants, we were floored and told her we had a problem. She pulled her manager over, who fussed at us for our ridiculous suggestion of running all 9 cards. She started by explaining that the menus state that they cannot split checks. We responded by saying that we were offered that option, and while we understood that they couldn't give us separate checks, we didn't understand why they couldn't split the 1 check onto different charge cards. The manager told us that if we wanted to do that, we'd have to stand in line at the register. We explained that the waitress had told us she didn't have TIME to run all of our cards separately!!! The Manager should be ashamed for not asking what the issue was and getting the facts prior to fussing at us! Pros: none, as far as I'm concerned. The mediocre food doesn't make up for the service. Cons: SERVICE is Horrible!!! more

Lovely patio dining. 11/2/2006

This is a lovely cafe/bakery. Just had a great lunch--good food and good service! Tomato-basil soup is best I have ever had. Desert, chocolate pecan pie, was just like home made only better! I will be back soon. Pros: good food from a non-chain cafe Cons: noisy inside more

Good food, newbie service 9/12/2006

Pleasant and bright atmosphere, good sandwiches (their croissants = win) and soup, and great desserts (key lime tarts, cheesecakes sqaures, and lemon squares are my favorites). The strawberry lemonade is a good drink choice (note: it's on the sweet side). But on the negative side, the service is a bit lacking! This place went from counter service to waited tables... Not sure if it's the management's lack of experience, but it's frustrating to see your waiter standing around while you're waiting to order. Other thoughts: I read a bunch of reviews of this place online and they all seem to say ""mediocre this or mediocre that"". Not sure where these folks are from, but I've eaten way worse food in Houston in far less pleasant restaurants :) First-class gourmet, it isn't. But for the price, it's inifintely better than eating at Chili's... Pros: sandwiches, atmosphere, desserts Cons: where's my waiter? more

Sunflower Bakery for the Birds! 7/18/2006

Trying hard, but not up to snuff. Entering through the small boutique which boasts of overpriced, mediocre arts & craft items, you will find yourself in an overpriced and mediocre bakery. The breads and deserts look expoentially better than they taste. The quality and flavor of the baked goods are on par (and in some cases less than) what you might find in an higher end grocery store bakery. I didn't eat in the restaurant, but my expectations were low looking at what other patrons were eating....looked great on the plate, but that was as far as it went. A true example of form over function....everything looks right, but nothing rises to the occassion. Too bad, because it is clear the management has the right idea, but they seemed to have forgotten the most important element....the food is what matters most! Pros: Nice idea, good ambience Cons: Priced too high for quality of product more

just awful 4/29/2006

In Galveston, mediocre is viewed as excellent. I think we are all eager to find something unique. This place is a one of a kind and in Galveston (with no competition) it ranks high among the natives. I was in their new location and two people identified as the owners were the rudest people I have ever encoutered. I got in line (there were 8 people working and two people ahead of me) they ordered pastries and I waited for five minutes while people counted change, etc. I asked if someone could help me. The owner came out , said, ""I don't like your attitude, I don't care if you eat here or not, etc. All this because he was in charge of an incompetent operation. Mediocre desserts and a horrible attitude. One staff member whispered: ""I try not to ever talk to them."" Pros: different Cons: rude owners, mediocre food, pompous more

The best desserts and sandwiches! 3/19/2004

Wonderful sandwiches and fresh desserts. My personal favorites are the chocolate cake, huge cinnamon rolls, and scones. Pros: Great food more
