Best

I love it here. This is definitely one of my favorite Hollywood spots and I try to frequent the club with friends as much as possible! This is really a great spot...you just need ...

Worst

The view is great. That's what this place definately has going for it. The service is slow and not all that great. Problem is the crowd. There's a ton of tourists and the rest are...

NEED DEEP POCKETS! 1/10/2003

We went to this place last friday. The DJ was spinning some CLASSIC tunes! I never danced sooo much as I did that night. The view is incredible. The crowd was a bit snobby, but screw em. I wasn't there to see them! However, the drinks were a bit pricy, pretty potent, but pricy nonetheless. I wonder if it would be possible to sneak a flask in next time? hmmmmmm I give it 2 thumbs up! Pros: Great View, Great Music, Strong Drinks! Cons: Expensive drinks, not so friendly, Confusing restrooms more

Uber-trendy star hang-out 1/8/2003

I have had great burgers here and mediocre burgers here, the fries are quite good though. The pool is a 'scene'. Great place for star gazing. Last time I was here, I saw a movie star and a rock star dining (at inside coffee shop). The wait staff has an attitude, but go at least once for the ' L.A.' experience and if you like trendy mid-century decor. Pros: Atmosphere, Celebrity viewing, Good fries Cons: Pricey Diner food, Wait staff Attitude, Some dishes are poor more

Went Monday night, feels like a penthouse party. Great atmosphere. Photo shoot was done here and is in this months GQ magazine. Can't wait to go again. more

Didn't like this bar 12/15/2002

I think this bar is over-rated. The concept was cool, being up on the roof was excellent but the crowd stunk and it wasn't a very classy place - sort of dumpy. Didn't like how much of a hassle it was to get around the wristband, get upstairs, etc. Didn't like sharing the bathroom with boys. Pros: cool view Cons: trashy, expensive, complex more

the good and bad of it all 12/13/2002

The Standard in downtown LA is a great place to go have a few drinks and relax with friends. The atmosphere upstairs is unbelievable. You have to go there. Unfortunantly, the service at the door is terrible, rude, and unprofessional. Improvement is definetely needed if they expect to keep Standard as popular as it is at the moment. Pros: great on the roof Cons: expensive for a bar, awful door hosts, rude line service more

Not for the weekends! 12/1/2002

This place is great for drinks during the week. The crowd on the weekends suck in LA and specially the Standard in Downtown! Pros: Great View, Good Atmosphere Cons: Far Away more

INSPIRATIONAL/FUN 12/1/2002

Nice sky view and inspirational. The price fits the place, sometimes $20, or $10 depending of the day. They have mostly a very good service. Nice setting/decoration and distribution of tables, warmers, couches to relax and chat, fire place, nice small bar, water beds and the swimming pool. The dance floor shouldn't have carpet. The restrooms shouldn't be general. Saturdays the music is mixed and the real dancing begins at 11pm. Sundays it is mostly trance and house beats usually with a younger crowd. Yes, a few times people have got naked inside of the pool but with the sense of having a healthy fun. The crowd is mixed. Good Dj's and the prices of drinks are just like any other average bars I have visited. If you are a free spirit type of person this is a nice and trendy place to visit. Pros: Setting/decoration, Dj's, service Cons: Dance floor/carpet, restrooms, elevators more

Don't Bother 12/1/2002

You would think that this place would be a cooler place to go and hangout at. However, the days of cool are over for this "once" downtown hotspot. Here are the good and the bad things about the bar. The Good: -I like the rooftop idea and being downtown gives it a cool almost NYC feel. The Bad -They have some of the worst Djs in the city. Playing everything from crap to crap. -The drive sucks and if the night there sucks you are stuck -Drinks are cheap -The people are becoming pretty bridge and tunnel more

Shady Crowd 11/30/2002

If you're looking for a classy, hip place to go, this is NOT the scene. The bar is filled with L.A. downtown-ites (for lack of a better term). The people all seem to go there to relive their highschool raver parties. The only thing missing is a keg. The drinks are WAY over priced (13$ martinis) and it takes an hour to get one. It does have a nice view though. Pros: View, Hotel, Pool Cons: Prices, People, Service more

Hisya 11/29/2002

I like the bar very much.I can make a new friend at the bar.I can dance very well and sing softly. Pros: Good parking, Inexpensive, Suitable Cons: Inexpensive, Good parking, Crowded more

Not so cool anymore... 11/13/2002

Just like any trendy place, the glam quickly fades away... The Standard bar lost it's beautiful crowd when the summer ended. It will always be a cool place to hang out due to it's location and beauty, hopefully the good house sessions will linger on for a while... Pros: great location Cons: expensive drinks more

very cool rooftop space 11/8/2002

The idea of a roofbar in Los Angeles is a great one - the view is incredible and the waterbed pods were my favorite. I have to say that the crowd, though, was disappointing and the place in general, is overrated. Pros: rooftop view, poolside pods, delicious menu Cons: pushy crowd, overcrowded elevator, not the best clientel more

Nice retro space, uneven bartending. 11/7/2002

The space is hip and retro-cool. The skyline of downtown around you looks more like a movie set than real life. The furniture is funky and the waterbeds are always taken. Had no trouble getting in the week I was in town, but I was there on a Monday, Tuesday and then Wednesday (really, there's nothing else downtown). The drinks are rather pricey and depending on which bartender makes it, can be sublime to sucky. They didn't even tell me that no Kurant was behind the bar when I ordered my Metropolitan, and I got some sort of murky, but yummy, Cosmo as my drink. The one night we had food, service was spotty (waitress disappearing for 15 minutes at a time on an uncrowded and small rooftop). The (very small) guacamole dip stood out as a must-order-again. Yeah, I'd come back until something else cool opens downtown... Pros: nowhere else to go Cons: uneven bartending, uneven service more

This place is awesome! 11/5/2002

Go for a burger by the pool. It's a great place to eat before catching a movie at the Sunset 5!!! Pros: Great Food, Great Service, Cool Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

Smooth and Sophisticated 11/2/2002

This place was suprisingly off the hook. We didn't have a problem getting in and the drinks were awesome...expensive, but awesome. The pool, fireplaces, and waterbed tents make for a great night of foreplay if you come with someone you dig and want to impress. Before you go, be sure to call in case a private party is going on...this happens quite often and could put a wrench in your plans. Pros: view, atmoshere, energy Cons: expensive drinks, parking more

attractive people and decor, bad service 11/2/2002

The decor is amazing and the music is very good. The bouncers are too self-absorbed, and the drinks are weak. I saw legitimately hot girls getting turned down for VIP, so I thought VIP must be REALLY something ... so I tipped the bouncer and got into the VIP area. Save your cash for the overpriced drinks and just chill downstairs, the girls in the lobby area were waaay hotter than the ones in VIP. The lobby is a good place to just chill out ... worth at least one visit. Pros: lobby, attractive people Cons: weak drinks, expensive drinks, rude service more

Wow! 11/1/2002

I'd heard for almost a year how fantastic the setting was at the Roof Bar, but being a total skeptic I was prepared to be underwhelmed. So I had to eat my words the other night when I walked out onto the roof and the view nearly took my breath away. It made me remember why despite everything, I love Los Angeles. The crowd, well, it didnt make me remember that; but the fabulous cosmos and the gorgeous L.A. skyline all around were enough to make it a beautiful night. Bring out-of-towners here, theyll be impressed. more

Worth the View 10/31/2002

Downtown people finally have a great after work bar! Finally a place that makes you feel like you live in a big city. The view is spectacular. And did I mention the waterbeds? I would even travel downtown on (gasp!) a weekend to hang out here. more

  • The all-American diner gets an L.A. makeover at this hotel haunt where beaded curtains replace blinds and hard liquor spikes milk and coffee. Not unlike many a hungover guest, this 24-hour trendoid mecca is ghostly during daylight. But things heat up at night when runway-model waitresses serve hungry clubgoers international comfort food like Croque Monsieur, a French-style grilled cheese with ham and Gruyere on rustic bread. Burgers come with skin-on shoestring fries while ahi tuna tartare and butternut squash soup are other belly fillers for after-hours food fiends looking to sober up.
