This place was so awesome. So super yummy! We visited on 08/11/12 and will certainly be back. Quality food as well as service and a nice homey comfortable atmosphere. Chateaubriand was soo good. We asked if they knew of anyone that had farm fresh eggs as we were camping nearby and wanted some for our morning breakfasts. It so happened one of the servers did. She was so nice and gave us her number and we drove back up the following day to buy a couple dozen. We cooked some up to have with our ginormous amount of leftover tenderloin. Wow was it a great breakfast! Thank you Bears' for helping make it such a wonderful weekend for us! Can't wait to come back... more

Fantastic Meal..Great Ambiance. Impeccable Service... Gets better with each visit!!! more

Awesome Food!! Service was impeccable! What a great evening 3/29/2012

Just imagine feeding 6 chefs for dinner and not one single negative comment about the quality of food and the outstanding service we were treated. Mama Bear knew how to train their cubs, with Chef Robert preparing a feast fit for a king and Thomas treated us with royalty and professional service that I have not experienced in years. The food was properly prepared and the flavor for each menu item was distinct. We ate Lamb, Pork Chops, Chateaubriand, Chicken, Shrimp, Pickled Herring, Roasted Peppers, Smoked Salmon and an array of homemade desserts. You haven't been to heaven till you dine at the Bears' Steakhouse heaven. We came, we ate and we conquered. We will be back next time we are in the Albany/Cobleskill area to enjoy another feast prepared by Chef Robert and Mama Bear, Mrs. Payne. more

ORDER THE CHATEAU BRIAND!!! 10/12/2011

I am glad I didn't listen to some of those reviews below, you always have to make your own opinion. I loved everything, from the shrimp cocktail (best horseradish sauce), to the tomato bisque soup (out of this world), to the awesome chateaubriand (meat was like butter) and of course the cheesecake! And the waiter was great, he did point out all the specials and recommended a very good wine. very very pleasant evening. Coming from Vienna (Austria) about 2 years ago to this area, my taste buds are spoiled, very spoiled. This was the best dinner a had since I moved here. I will definitely bring my friends from Austria to the Bears restaurant, just to prove them there is good food in the states you just have to know where. ;) more

It's all about the meat 1/23/2011

People will tell you the The Bears Steakhouse is in the middle of nowhere, or that it's hard to find, but neither is really true. It's on NY Rt. 7, only 1.5 miles south of the intersection of U.S. 20, a very busy intersection running through Duanesburg, NY. You wouldn't expect to find a notable steakhouse out here, but it's not like it's a place all by itself out in the wilderness. In fact, there's an ice cream stand right across the street, a lodge practically next door, and two diners within a couple of miles. The restaurant is in a moderate-sized room (holds maybe 15 tables) of the home of the owners and has a bit of a hodgepodge rustic-industrial-grandma's-house feel. On the Grandma side, there's floral wallpaper all around and a display of mostly cheap modern teddy bears (vintage bears would be a nicer touch). The Rustic comes from some exposed wood here and there, and also from a few hard wood western ""wagon wheel"" chairs that a handful of diners are provided. The out-of-place Industrial look comes from the vinyl covered institutional steel chairs that most of the patrons are provided with. Our waiter was very pleasant and cheerful, though I wish that he - or my wife! - had pointed out that the laminated single-sheet menu listed items on BOTH of its sides, as I entirely missed seeing the list of appetizers and deserts on the reverse, thinking that the later must be on a menu of its own (not that I EVER order desert, I just like to enjoy reading the descriptions!). As for the appetizers, I had half-heard another server shout the list of appetizers (twice) to diners seated at another table, so I assumed our server would eventually be doing the same (I say ""half-heard"", because the restaurant was VERY loud, thus the need for the other server to shout in order to be heard by the people she was serving (the gals at this long table, in fact, were in a particularly loud and frisky mood, sharing sexual innuendo with our server - and he with them - frequently drawing stares from all around the room). Dinner began with a bowl of rolls, most of which where actually stale (at least two of them were hard as stone through-and-through). Then came the mixed mescalin salad, that was fine, but not as tender as I would have expected from a restaurant with the pedigree of this one. No matter.. this place is about meat, and there was no disappointment in the quality or amount of food we were next served. I ordered the Delmonico steak, which was about a foot long, 6"" wide, and 2"" thick! Easily enough meat for 3 meals, and in fact, I barely ate any of it, cutting off a large slab from one end in order to sample a few slices from nearer the center. The meat was a bit on the rare side of the ordered medium-rare, but it was still a marvel. It also came with a baked potato and a large pile of perfectly cooked, glazed baby carrots, every bite of which I devoured. My wife ordered the pork chops, and they arrived about 2.5"" thick, each chop measuring something in the neighborhood of 4"" x 6"". Again, enough meat for several meals. In fact, I ate a healthy portion of one of hers, and she finished that one off, saving the remaining chop for another day. Our server came over to check on us, after the other server had taken away our meat to be wrapped, and - since he asked if everything had been to our liking - I decided I would mention the stale rolls. He was very apologetic, and sent us home with 4 soft, fresh ones, which I thought was a nice touch. There was one final disappointment, however. When my wife and I got home, we discovered that the person who wrapped our meat tossed out the large slab I had separated from rest in order to get at the center. I'm sure there was a lot of fat along the edges, but there was also a heck of a lot of meat still in that slab! more

DONT GET THE CHATEAUBRIAND !!!!!!!! 9/19/2009

sittings are 5:30 and 8:30 Pros: big portions, great steaks and more, read on Cons: chateaubriand is the only con, and i mean ""CON"" more

You better be hungry!! 10/31/2008

This is a nice little restaurant. Service was a little slow, but we were very well treated. Went with a party of six. 5 of us had pre-ordered the Prime Rib. What we got was 10 healthy slices of prime rib on a platter, along with plenty of baked potatos and baby carrots. Enough left over for each of us to take a slice apiece home. The meat was good, but not quite as good as some of the other reviews would suggest. The person who didn't get the rib got scallops. There were a ton of them, and they received a very good review. Desserts were (to me) the best part of our meal. We had several different ones, and the waiter even threw in a complimentary piece of cheesecake, just for us to try. They were all excellent. Definitely worth saving some room for!! Bill for 6 of us was right around $300, including tip, with no alcohol. Good place to go. Make sure you make reservations. I will definitely go back. Pros: Good, plentiful food. Super desserts Cons: Out in the middle of nowhere. No childrens menu more

Worth the drive 4/12/2008

My first time eating at The Bears, and not the last! My wife and I were with 2 other couples who went with the Papa Bear specials and came away with full stomachs and food for the next day. Pros: cooked exactly to your order more

chateau briand the best ever 2/4/2008

We went there for a special occasion and had the best chateau briand in the world - highly recommend you have this. Everything is made from scratch - from the bread in the bread basket to the crust on all the home made pies. Price.......very pleasant!!. $135.00 for 2 including 3 beers and 2 sodas, appetizer, soup, salad, main course and dessert/coffee. Pros: food is amazing Cons: need to make reservation several weeks in advance more

Amazing!! 10/2/2007

Being from NYC we are spoiled with amazing restaurants, so naturally, the hype we heard about the Bears was taken with a grain of salt. Were we in for a surprise. Our experience from start to finish was quite possibly the best dining experience I've ever had. Everyone was friendly, attentive and the food was absolutely out of this world. Each course is meticulously prepared - this family really cares about what they do and it is readily apparent. We can't wait to go back again and again. Don't miss this true gem! Pros: Incredible food and service! more

The Bears Steak House 9/29/2007

My wife and I had dinner at The Bears Steak House with another couple who had dinned there previously and we thought it was amazing. The service was GREAT, the food was excellent from the appitizers, the soup, the entree right down to the dessert. The staff was fantastic and very friendly, they treated each customer (from what we noticed) as though they were VIP'S. We dine out quite often and had mentioned to the couple we were with on a previous dinner outing with that we can never find a great steak no matter we go, that is when they suggested The Bears Steak House. I have never written a reveiw but after our fantastic experience we thought we should. I HIGHLY recommend and I'm sure you will enjoy the experience as much as we did. Pros: Service, food etc....... more

Very disappointing... 7/17/2007

Friendly waitstaff.....the meal was totally overrated. Our ""Chateau"" was previously ordered as Med. Rare and was brought to the table as seriously well done. The food was a huge disappointment as was the bill at a very hefty $375 (with tip) for four people. Pros: nice shrimp cocktail, friendly waitstaff Cons: poor quality, overcooked, and pricey more

Bear Assets 5/24/2007

A quaint establishment that is slightly off the beaten path, well worth taking the road less traveled. The first impression as we entered was John, a multi-faceted gentleman that was our Maitre de, our waiter, and most importantly he was our host. Right away John let us know that we were to be treated as family, not as guests. We had a fairly large group (11) so when the reservation was made it was requested that we pre order to allow for the meals to be prepared in a timely manner and all of us be served at the same time. Once John confirmed who was to recieve which meal, the appetizer''s ensued with a flurry of flavor that the palatte cannot prepare for. Just as we thought we could not possibly taste something more delicous, John brought us our soup; creamy tomato with basil - sounds like a run of the mill soup HA !! simply incredible, it slowly caresses the palette, it seemed as though my taste buds were springing awake after a long slumber. At this point you start to wonder if there is ANY chance you can fit more food into your belly, then...the main course arrives. Being a person that is the quintessential ""Meat and potatoes"" guy, and having traveled around this country eating some of the very best steaks to be offered, all I can say is that these ain't your Mama's steak and potatoes. The Prime rib is served in a portion large enough to choke a whale and is so tender that you really don't need a knife. The baby carrots cooked in butter, brandy and brown sugar are dessert like. Next comes the ACTUAL dessert, can you say PIE ? Banana, Chocoloate, Rasberry ala mode, and OMG the carrot cake. Sorry Mom, John's mom has you beat. Altogether the food was spectacular, but what really makes a meal is the ambiance. John IS the ambiance. He is funny, personable, and was the reason we will all remember our first experience at the Bear's Steak house. P.S. Hey John...how did things work out with Bob and his umbrella ? Pros: Waiter, flavor, portions Cons: 1500 miles from home - gas is expensive more

Great Waitstaff - not so great food ! 2/22/2007

It was a special occasion for our group of 14 and the restaurant was touted as being top notch ! What a disappointment it was - - the appetizers of shrimp cocktails were great, but the cocktail sauce was hot enough to burn your mouth (a great comparison would be Chinese ""hot"" mustard). Next came the soup course - - we opted for squash soup which, while very creamy, tasted more like a dessert - - way too much butter and brown sugar . . . where was the squash? The Chateaubriand would melt in your mouth but only after cutting off the outer edges because the spicy, overly-peppered coating was enough to burn your tongue. It was a pricey evening and most of group felt that we should have saved the time, money, gas and our stomachs by chosing among the many better restaurants closer to home. Pros: Service exceptional - great waitstaff Cons: Food well below expectations more

#1 Steakhouse Anywhere! 2/10/2006

Excellent everything! Food is great...waitors are prompt and friendly! Definetly a great place to go! Pros: Friendly Waitors, Great Food, Huge Portions Cons: Nothing, Nothing, Nothing more

Where Beef is King! 7/23/2005

This is a great spot for the carnivores in the Capital Region. The menu is limited, but they do things very well. Steaks, chops, chateaubriand and prime ribs (the last two for four and by reservation only), are large, well prepared and sure to please. Appetizers are good but the salads are uninspired (like many steakhouses). My only ""beef"" is the lack of menu items for folks who aren't in the mood for a massive hunk of meat. Scallops and salmon are the only seafood options and there is a daily chicken special. A shrimp or lobster entree would be nice. Since I'm always on the lookout for a tasty piece of beef, I love it! I just wish they were open more than four days a week (Wed - Sat)... Pros: The Beef, Gargantuan Portions Cons: Only Open 4 Days/Week, Limited Non-Meat Entr more

What A Meal!!!!!!!!!!!! 6/27/2005

If you enjoy an outstanding meal then you need to eat here. This is not some plain wrapper chain place or one of those here to today and gone tomorrow city restaurants, it's an outstanding small but big on deliverance and taste restaurant. Pros: Outstanding, One of a Kind, Worth the wait Cons: None, None, None more

BEST meal I've ever had!!! 6/6/2005

Hands down, this is the best meal I've ever had!!!! Sorry Grandma. :( Served family-style with our group of four, the Chateaubriand was absolutely incredible. Literally mealting in your mouth! And, given the small size of the place, the service was attentive and beyond comparison. We can't wait to return! more

Good food! 1/14/2005

Ok their phone skills could use some work , but other then that they have no need for improvement. The personal attention that you get is unsurpassed by any body else in the capital region. Their steak melts in your mouth and the fresh horseraddish cocktail sauce will bring tears to your eyes. Small charming dining room, if your looking for good steak house look no further! Pros: Steak more

The Bears...should be the 'over-Bearing' 11/16/2004

I went to the Bears on recommendation from several people. It was true, the steak was the most delicious steak I ever tasted. Unfortunately, thats where my delight ends. The boiled potatoes and carrots, the overpriced menu and an owner who walked around in shorts and undershirt trying to schmooze all the ladies was enough to keep me away. We spent almost five hundred dollars for six people to have dinner. When I called to make reservations, they acted like they were doing me a favor by letting me in. They've been told once too many times that it was wonderful there...and have forgotten the customer service part. Pros: Steak Cons: , Attitude more
