I love to dine out, especially at cute, ethnic restaurants...however, I will ever go back to SDM! The food was ok, nothing to brag about. I have been to Peru and I would not call ...

cosy, reminded me of Austin, Santa Fe, Santa Monica or other places slightly cooler than Atlanta 12/7/2008

I just moved here and have only been to SDM twice, so if my impressions change, I will make note of it. I found the service to be awesome, the sangria to be reasonably yummy given its very reasonable price, and the tapas to be quite affordable and good. Some people complained about the tuna dishes. Y'all, just don't order a tuna dish that costs less than ten dollars, that is a no-brainer. If a normally expensive fish is being sold at a cheap price steer far, far away!!! One time I just sat on the patio and listened to (free, halfway decent) live music and grooved on sangria and chips and salsa, and one time a friend and I shared some tapas and some more yummy sangria inside. Nice decor, excellent lighting. For the price, I have no complaints, and shame on anybody who expects better food, especially sea food, for less than ten dollars a plate. That is all. Thank you. Pros: cheap yummy small plates Cons: not the highest quality fish more

Won't Be Going Back 8/3/2008

It's in a cute spot but that's about it. The service was subpar. The tapas we ordered ( Empaladas, Chicken Mole, Paella, and Mango Guac) were all awful. The mojito wasn't any better. Definitely a miss! more

Wow!!! 7/10/2008

I just moved to midtown early this year and i dont know many people and many good restaurants. I usually read up on them before i visit them mainly because i dont have anyone to recommend any. Well i read up on Sweet Devil Moon and was surprised to find many poor reviews. I decided to visit this restaurant anyway. Wow! I couldnt believe this was the same place. The food was excellent! I love latin food and was glad to see a mix of latin tapas on the menu. I only tried a few but they were all very tasty. The mole was flavorful and so was the chicken and rice. I ordered a mojito because this is a drink that varies from place to place. I must say, it was neither too sweet nor too minty. I was just rite. A definite must if you go. Everyone was very friendly and the service was superb. Unfortunately, i was there on a tuesday so i didnt hear any live music. But im definitely going back. Pros: Food, Price, Service Cons: No draft beer. more

Best mohijtos in town 1/7/2008

I have never eaten here.....so I cant speak to how the food tastes...although it always looks very pretty. I love the atmosphere....it is so dark in there! They have the best mohijtos in town and $10 bottemless sangria...you can't beat that. The service is a bit slow so be warned but they are super friendly! Pros: Great drinks Cons: a bit slow more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD - DO NOT GO THERE! 12/1/2007

Two of my friends and I walked in to dine about an hour before the restaurant closes. There were no workers in the front room so I asked the bartender if there was a hostess. She replied, "Nooo. Do you want a table or something?" in the rudest manner. Our waitress, Monick, was a little better until we tried to order a few more tapas. She said we couldn't order anything else because it was too late. I let her know it would have been nice if she had told us the cutoff time for ordering and that we were all still hungry. On top of this, the food was also subpar to the agreement of my friend who is Peruvian. I reiterated that we were extremely unhappy with the service and to please get our check. She then has the audacity to add gratuity even though we were just a party of 3! My other friend asked if this was customary, and Monick said yes. We waited again for her to return to run our card. Instead of being prompt, she begins to help bust a table with another server. Mind you, our table and the other table were THE ONLY CUSTOMERS THERE from 10-11pm! At this point, I just wanted to leave this horrid place! I yelled, "Excuse me! Can we get this check taken care of?" She grabs the check and mocks me as she heads towards the back room. She returns and says, "So when I run the card, it won't let me add the gratuity so just write the gratuity I added on the tip line." RIGHT. We left NO tip. Of COURSE, we knew she would still run the card including the tip she had given herself. My friend checked her account immediately and there the WRONG charge was. My friend phones the restaurant. Owner Paul Vinces answers and assures us the charge will be corrected. We let him know that we will never ever dine there again and will also advise everybody we know to do the same. Not surprisingly, he has little reaction or resolve to this. I think Paul and all of his disrespectful, ill-mannered employees should rethink whether they should be in the business of HOSPITALITY. Pros: I can't think of any! Cons: HORRIBLE SERVICE EVER - made us feel unwanted during our entire meal. more

great ambiance and great new menu... 11/13/2007

I always enjoy dining at this restaurant! The weekends offer great music and upbeat atmosphere and try Thursday nights if you like a little salsa dancing. I really enjoy the recent menu changes (esp. the lamb!). The Ceviche is always delicious and they make a great mojito. more

Unique, quite tasty food but poor customer service 11/11/2007

The yuca rellena, peruvian saltado, and cameron al ajo were delicious and the mojitos were well-made. However, the service was exceedingly slow even though the restaurant was pretty much empty. Furthermore, our waiter made a mistake in overcharging our credit cards even though we had given a generous cash tip. Instead of apologizing and offering to rectify the situation, he first blamed us and then claimed nothing could be done. I was shocked by this response, since such mistakes happen at other businesses and it seemed pretty simple to cancel transactions and resubmit the proper amounts. No matter how tasty and unique the food might be, carelessness and dismissive attitudes toward monetary transactions are just not acceptable to me. Therefore, I will not return to this restaurant. Pros: Tasty, unique food; energetic location Cons: Poor customer service; inaccurate billing/credit card charging; limited parking more

Looks great, tastes BAD 11/9/2007

My boyfriend and I visited Sweet Devil Moon upon the recommendation of my roommate, who has lived in Atlanta forever. We stopped in on a Friday evening, a bit earlier than the usual dinner crowd. My roommate has good taste, so I anticipated an excellent meal. However, I was sorely disappointed. First of all, the service was 'chill.' A little too 'chill.' In fact, it was downright cold! Oh, our server was nice enough, but we waited FOREVER for her to bring us our second round of drinks. The place was empty, so I don't know why this was the case. We ordered 4 different small plates, all of them sounding delicious. However, the only thing I found remotely good was the black bean hummus. And, it's pretty hard to mush up black beans with lime, garlic and oil and have it turn out badly. The seafood paella was salty yellow rice with frozen chewy, rubbery calamari. I've been to Spain. This isn't even CLOSE to paella. The third plate was some kind of beef kabob, good flavor, but very tough meat. Our last plate didn't come until we had finished all of these and our drinks, and was supposed to be a smoked salmon and shrimp taco. The smoked salmon was fine, nothing extraordinary, but it was supposed to be wrapped in prociutto. The 'prociutto' was very tough, chewy thick ham. This isn't prociutto, not even close. Although, the presentation of this last plate, and all the plates actually was impressive. That's why this one took so long; it was an intricate piling of the tacos with shrimp shooting out in several directions. Pretty, disappointing. My mojito looked great with fresh mint throughout, but was heavy on the lime (gave me a stomache ache). Great location, great atmosphere, but if you come here, drink something out of a bottle and try some of the dessert instead of the regular food; my roommate says most of the desserts are homemade. Pros: Location, atmosphere Cons: Food and Drinks more

Great place and better service! 9/7/2007

The quality, portion sizes, wide variety of dishes -- AND EXCELLENT SERVICE -- make this restaurant a must. The service is especially amaizing when Maria, one of the cute waitresses, sings her Latino songs for all the customers! Free entertainment and great... Their "piscos" are among the finest spirits in. the world. Pros: The quality of their people... Cons: A very small part of the roof needs to be repaired. more

i wouldnt say horrible. though somewhere in between horrible and mediocre. 8/29/2007

I recently dined at sweet devil moon. DO NOT DO IT. it doesn't matter how much you crave a sangria for three dollars, just walking in isn't good for your health. the outside patio had furniture that looked like it had never been cleaned. the roof was dripping on us when we walked in. so we chose to dine indoors. The interior reeked of a dead animal, more than likely one in the rodent family. it was really hot inside, and what did they have to remedy that? a fan much like the ones you can buy at target. then we sit and are greeted by our waitress. she seems nice enough, but as we later found, smoking and sitting at the bar were more suited to her tastes. (later she actually decided to sing with the band instead of getting my date his well needed/deserved third beer.) I saw other employees running frantically to keep their guests happy---i guess we did not luck out this time. We ordered our food. fish tacos, which were ok, covered with a spicy chipotle sauce with a mild pico. palta rellena, avacado with chicken salad-when it arrived, it seemed as though some strange rice noodle alien had consumed it. there was more of the rice noodles (I suppose a garnish, because it wasn't listed on the menu.) than there anything else. the scallops we had were prepared properly and offered not only spice but sweetness. these were the highlights. the yuca frita, the mussels, the crab cakes, and the paella were all unsatisfying. the paella was bland, and it shouldn't even warrent the name paella. the yuca frita was boring, with sauces that didn't inspire. the crab cakes were mushy, lacking crab as well as flavor. and the mussels. oh, the mussles. they were a disgusting blend of too much tequila and what seemed like frozen shellfish. Our dinner was finally finished, and with only 2 dessert options, we didn't feel the need to even go there. avoid this place if you are looking for a worthwhile dining experience. and if you just want to drink sangria, there is better to be had. Pros: all boring and mundane. no pros. no kids allowed. Cons: service:lacking. food:bad. bathrooms:disgusting. for parents: no kids allowed. more

Avoid if you want tasty and fresh food 7/19/2007

I have never been so dissatisfied with a restaurant that I felt the need to warn others not to be fooled by the high CitySearch star rating and eat there. I had wanted to try this restaurant for months and was appalled by the taste and quality of the food and the lack of cleanliness. The tapas at Sweet Devil Moon were unappetizing: the greens were shriveled, the shrimp had a suspect smell, and the cheese sauce was congealed. On a positive note, the fried plantains were very good and my friend raved about the salmon bruscetta. The service was friendly, but unpredictable; our server was more interested in flirting and dancing with a co-worker than bringing our tapas and drinks. I am not exaggerating when I say that there were rodent excrement and a fruit fly infestation in the bathroom, which I wish I had seen before we ate. I should have known better when there was only one couple there at 7:30 on a Thursday night. Think again and go elsewhere. Cons: cleanliness, food quality, attentiveness of staff more

What Happened!? 6/25/2007

Years ago, when this restaurant was located in Oakhurst, it was one of the better tapas places that I had ever been to. After visiting their Midtown relocation, however, I was extremely disappointed. While the service was fairly attentive, the food was mediocre, at best. I would have been embarrased to serve the puny, stringy mussels that they served us (unfortunate since the broth was quite good), and the proscuitto bruschetta looked and tasted more like corned beef on toast. Most of the other dishes we had were decent, the steak and chicken brochettes, mango guacamole, and black bean hummus. The wine list offered some variety, but avoid the crianza (it was either corked, or an exceptionally bad wine), and the dessert was not too terrible. I am left to wonder if this location isn't truly cursed, with previous restaurants (Fishmonger, Big Red Tomato) rarely lasting a couple of seasons. If Sweet Devil Moon doesn't turn things around, it might be next... Pros: Attentive service, creative dishes Cons: poor execution of dishes, food was sub-par for the price more

Good service, Terrible food 1/28/2007

I'm surprised by all the high reviews of this restaurant. This was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in recent years and is by far the worst tapas place I've ever been to. Frankly with such poor quality food I'm surprised this place is still in business. Besides the lack of taste, my friend and I both got ill from the food (probably the very suspect beef chimicurri dish). I've never written a review on CitySearch before but this was such a bad experience that I felt obligated to save others from this experience. I do have to say the restaurant staff was very friendly and attentive. But unfortunately that can't completely make up for terrible food. . Pros: Friendly attentive wait staff Cons: Terrible food, bartender smoking in restaurant more

Great Tapas for a Great Price! 12/24/2006

My girlfriend and I had an excellent time! The waiter, Noah, was very nice. The restaurant is small, most of it is on the patio. We left just as the music started so we were a bit upset. I think for the price the tapas were great. The beer was cold, the food was pleasant, what else can you say. Now even though there are other tapas places that can be considered better, for the price this place is great! No complaints, so please go ahead and give it a try. I am also beginning to pick up a funny vibe about this website, every posting that had a party of 5 or more people seems to be a problem. If every waiter had a table with 5 or more people, at 5 tables per waiter, that is one person attempting to please 25 people. It is not easy I am sure. Again just dine and have a good time. Pros: Price, food, service Cons: There aren't any! more

Great Tapas 11/12/2006

Nice patio, great food, friendly staff...it is one of the best tapas restaurants I have been to in a while. Lots of seafood dishes prepared with a Peruvian influence. The Ceviche and Steak Brochettes were excellent! Pros: Patio, Food, Atmosphere Cons: Parking more

NO SERVICE!!! 10/1/2006

Cool atmosphere, but bad (or should I say) no service. Good place to have a drink or two, but not if you want to eat anything. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Service more

A taste of Peru! 9/6/2006

First off, try the ceviche... the best I've had in Atlanta. I've had almost the whole menu & so far everything is great. The prices are only $6 & $7 for all tapas. And for a tapa the portions aren't too shabby. Their special pisco sours are a taste of Peru, but if you want wine- try the sangria! I highly recommend you try Sweet Devil Moon... more

Great Tapas In Midtown! 8/3/2006

Being a lover of small plates, my partner and I dropped by the new location of Sweet Devil Moon. This location has to be one of the most diversified intersections(10th & Piedmont), in Midtown. It was very hot outside, but we sat on the nice little patio anyway. The constant flow of people in the area walking by, just adds to the charm. And what a great assortment of Tapas. Many I have never heard of before. The owner is from Peru, and some of the items were family recipes. Outstanding was Jalea(fried calamari, shrimp with jalapeno salsa). The stuffed gape leaves were delicious. Be sure and ask for extra grilled Cuban bread for dunking in the different sauces. The fresh home-made Sangria was perfect for a hot summer night. All items were six and seven dollars. We can't wait until our next visit. Pros: Great Tapas Menu, Sangria, and Nice Service! Cons: Parking Can Be Tricky, If Driving! more

I'm peruvian... this is NOT peruvian food! 5/30/2006

This is THE WORSE "peruvian" food I've ever tried... I went with my boyfriend very excited to show him some dishes from my country and it was SOOO disappointing! the pisco sour tasted like apple! there were no key limes neither pisco in there... the ceviche was by far the worse ever... it was dry, hard, tasteless, the fish had a weird taste as if it had been boiled before adding the key lime juice, it was full of black pepper and cut in huge chunks.. baaaaad!!!... the yuca frita was not too bad, but the sauce was far from being the original recipe... I do much better at home!... the papa a la huancaina was hot! that dish MUST be served cold!... the jalea was OK but tiny and wasn't served with the correct sauce... Don't go to this place, there are much better peruvian restaurants in town... Pros: location Cons: bad food, very loud, expensive more

Great Peruvian Place in atlanta 4/22/2006

  • The Scene
With its dripping altar candles, blood-red walls and funky almond-eyed Madonna paintings, this neighborhood tapas bar has the feel of a hip lounge. Inside are two narrow rooms--one stocked with comfy chairs and another featuring a fun corrugated tin bar and a grouping of small tables. Service is low-key and extremely friendly.

    The Food
The short menu features flavorful small plates. If you're here with a few friends, it's easy to cover the entire menu, but be sure not to miss the Jalea (fried squid and fish served with jalapeno and tamarind salsas), mellow, sweet garlic shrimp, and especially some variety of yucca (either fried or tossed cold in a garlicky marinade). Lomo Saltado (fried potatoes tossed with peppers and beef sirloin) and marinated, grilled pork are ideal ballast for a big night out. Need a new cocktail vice? Try the Pisco sour.
