great service, nice setting, bad portion size 10/26/2008

went here with my fiancee for a romantic night. got the window seat we requested. hostess and server were both very nice. location is beautiful and very classy. the food was a bit disappointing. very beautifully prepared and everything was cooked to perfection. ordered the crab cake appetizer... didnt realize $19 only bought ONE crabcake. my fiancee ordered the scallops for her main course. very disappointed. it was incredibly salty. 4 scallops topped with shredded pork (10 times more salty than bacon). so salty that it was almost inedible. but the upside was the scallops were cooked perfectly. but for $36 4 scallops didnt quite fill a normal sized stomach. i had the steak and it was awesome. mushrooms were a nice touch... asparagus cooked to perfection. but what really stood out was the potatoes au gratin. they were the best potatoes ive ever had! the steak had good flavor, no need for A1 or any other condiments. very impressed with the steak. but i had to split my meal with my fiancee because the scallops just didnt quite cut it. overall i would come back, but only 3 stars this time because we didnt leave the restaurant with our stomachs full.... which is really the main reason why we go eat. more

Such a great evening 1/23/2007

What a FABULOUS dinner my friend and I had at Sutro's last night. Better yet, the Dine About Town promotion feels like a real deal there considering their average entree price is close to $28. I had the organic broccoli soup which was 20% cream, a juicy grilled swordfish that was prepared with some really tasty interesting root-like vegetables, and a fancy dessert sampler. My friend had the soup also, and a pillow steak that was amazing as well. (Kobe beef). She had the creme brule for dessert and she I and both agreed that it was the best creme brule we'd ever had in our lives. Service and ambiance were great. Also, you can't beat watching the waves crash onto the rocks and shore below from a view table in an architecturally-savvy restaurant. Pros: Food, ambiance, service, unique dining experience Cons: parking might be tough at times more

GREAT SF EXPERIENCE... 1/2/2007

I returned to San Francisco this holiday season for the first time in a couple years and a visit to the new Cliff House was on the list...WOW... WHAT A FACELIFT! I actually returned for a second time! Our first visit my host had made reservations in SUTROS', so we were promptly whisked away to our table for a sumptuous meal accompanied by an impressive, mostly Californian wine list. All at the table were pleased with our fare. Beautiful views all around... My second visit, a friend and I dropped by Sutros' again in hopes to get in but alas, were booked for the evening. Luckily, we were directed to the bar and lounge where the views are just as good and full menu is offered WITH NO WAIT... We were very impressed by the knowlewdge and proffesionalism of the two bartenders working, non-pretentious and a pleasure to chat with. Looking forward to my next visit when I return to town. Pros: great food, great views, friendly/non-pretentious service Cons: the wait without a reservation, avoid by dining at the bar... more

Delicious food!! From the appetizers to dessert! It's not a cheap restaurant but you can have a decent lunch for 100 bucks :) Need to call for reservations if you want a seat right next to the windows that view the sea. However, you can always sit by the bar tables, they are as nice and you can still have a great view. Service is excellent as well! I loved it. more

UNGRACIOUS SERVICE 4/29/2006

Definitely not recommended for corporate entertainment if requiring smooth and refined service. Even the Maitre d'Hotel does not know how to speak to a customer. Impeccable staff not to be found. Pros: view, food adequate, beach Cons: ungracious service, guests not guests, a big cafeteria more

Great Experience 2/27/2006

I took an out of town guest here for dinner and it could not have been better. Everythng was perfect. My friend had the fish special and thought it was the best she has ever had. Presentation is beautifull, while the portion size is still very good. The staff also very friendly. Great place for a special dinner! Pros: VIEW, FOOD, VIEW more

Delightful evening! 2/1/2006

Having only been to the Cliffhouse a couple of times (a few years ago) before this time, the transformation we witnessed was astounding. Gone are the times when a decent order of fish and chips was as far as your expectation dared to wander... the new menu is worthy of every accolade heaped on it! The food was truly delicious, and the service very attentive. The wine list is certainly worthy of mention as well: it is entirely possible to have a great wine here without putting down a month's rent for it. Pros: Food, Wine list, Service more

Excellent Food, Incredible View 1/31/2006

I've been to Sutro's a few times and each time it gets better. The food is amazing and with each bite, I savor each flavor. THe combinations are unusual and keep me wanting more and more. Sutro's is one of my favorite restaurants to recommend to locals and out-of-towners.! Keep up the good work Patrick Clark! Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Did I mention - Food Cons: Parking more

Global fusion gourmet 1/30/2006

Wow, what to rave about first, the food or the view? Both are unparalleled! I love the global influence in the ingredients and dishes! How often do you see a Thai Curry dish (very tasty), Apple wood smoked bacon crusted salmon (delicious!), Falafel, and Sesame seared Ahi, all on the same menu? The desserts are all savory and their fresh ingredients add depth to traditional dishes. Who knew sake soaked blueberries are a perfect pair for ginger cake? The organic offerings and willingness to accommodate food allergies were both appreciated. The food and ambiance are a luxurious escape! I came back within a week of my first visit and plan to make this a regular retreat for my husband and I, as well as some girl's nights, too! The service was the perfect balance between attentiveness and time to savor! A must for locals and visitors, alike! Pros: Food Quality, View, Food Variety Cons: Parking more

Phenominal! 1/29/2006

Beautiful views, delicious food! This was my first time eating at Sutro's since the remodeling / redefinition several years ago. The food was simply fantastic. And the ambiance is just unbeatable! Definitely worth dining at Sutro's! more

Amazing 1/29/2006

Of course everyone will go on and on about the view, and they have every right to do so, the view is unmatched. I will concentrate on the food, which I found to be exceptional. I have visited three times for dinner and twice for lunch, trying a new entree on each visit. The macadamia nut encrusted halibut is still my favorite. However the scallop dish was incredible. My fiance was enchanted by the lamb dish. Fresh and organic ingrediants make a huge difference. I would highly recommend a visit if you have not experienced this gem. more

The Perfect SF Experience 1/29/2006

We ate at Sutro's tonight and it was absolutely fabulous. The food is amazing (the special, a Hawaiian spearfish, was the best fish I have had outside of Hawaii), the view (especially at sunset) is one of the best in the city, and the service is attentive without being grating or overbearing. There is also a terrific wine list with choices for every budget and palate. I am already looking forward to my next visit! Pros: View!, Extensive Wine List more

It's the Cliff House...just better than ever 1/28/2006

I've been to the Cliff House at least 15 times and every time was great. I've only been once since it's become the ""new Cliff House"". This last visit surpassed every other. The food macadamia crusted halibut was uncommonly good. The wine was perfect. The staff and facility were impeccable. Our time there was, in a word, sumptuous. more
