Best

I took my fiance to SFO for this vacation, booked a table over the phone.

Worst

FANTASTIC views, cruddy service and mediocre food. AHH, that's magic in the making!

Absolutely Spectacular 9/8/2005

What an absolute treat. Our evening at Sutro's was wonderful. We can certainly see as to what all the hoop-la was all about among locals. We could'nt of asked for a better view along with great food and great service. The Sutro's Roll was incredible and our entree's were cooked to perfection (Would highly suggest the Macadamia Nut Crusted Halibut). For dessert the crepe's were out of this world. It was finally nice to see a service staff who were down to earth ,knowledgeable and not pretentious as we've seen in many restaurant's. Pros: worth every penny, view nothing like it Cons: parking more

Take it from a real ""Foodie"" 7/21/2005

I am in the wine biz and eat out at fine restaurants weekly. I was recently invited to the newly re-modeled Cliff House for Dinner. The place looks stunning, the new wing which houses Sutro's has a spectacular view to the north. The menu reads very cutting edge SF and delivers on every level. Try the Smoked Salmon ""pastrami or the signature sushi roll. For entree the Bacon crusted local salmon or the Kurabuta Pork chop which was out of this world. Don't miss the Custard trio for dessert. I will be back! more

Terrible at this price! 4/14/2005

Every negative review here is true! I kept hoping as I read the negative reviews on this site that it would have gotten better by now. It has not. We waited 45 minutes for a party of four on a Wed. night. We had ordered drinks and two appetizers while we waited, and we were not even comped on anything nor offered an apology for the wait! THEN, we ordered dinner and waited another hour before they brought out the entree. All of this would have been okay had the food been up to par. It wasn't. ,It was all overcooked and not good! The steak was not tender. I can't believe how poor this food was. The service was sub-standard and unprofessional. Everyone had a lackadaisical approach. Again, I cannot believe how high the bill was for such a terrible meal. We will not be going back. Pros: view Cons: food, service, wait more

3 strikes 3/28/2005

Visited Sutro 3 times, in both the main room and the bar. For a SF landmark restaurant they should be serving more exciting food or at least better executed food. 1st visit the food was the most diappointing part, the wine list, and then the casual service. visits to the bar, we were not given proper menus, had to ask many times for them. server stated that she could tell us all the wines available. we ordered a cocktail to start, food, then '96 (or '97) DomP, she spilled the first pour. the most appauling display of service was when we ordered sparking water...she brought the bottle and placed 2 glasses down and walked away, twice! To finish the espresso was as flat as coffee, no crema at all. we spent close to $300. returned the 3rdx for drinks only, still disappointed. Pros: view Cons: service, food more

Nice decor with good food 1/30/2005

Went to Sutro's on a rainy night during the Christmas holidays, so it was not very crowded and I didn't have a reservation. Nice tall glass windows and decor. Food was good. I ordered the New York steak and it wasn't too bad. Not terrific, especially since it's a pretty expensive restaurat. But then, you go there not just for the food. Since it was a rainy night, we couldn't see any view. But I think if you in the summer (SF's summer is in Sept) for dinner, you could check out the nice sunset and enjoy even more. The server was attentive. It's a romantic setting, yet not too fine dining that you have to speak really softly. Pros: Good parking, Romantic, Good view Cons: A little pricey more

Worth the trip 1/19/2005

Attentive and professional service, creative food, nice ambience even if you can't see the ocean in the evening. Ate here soon after it opened and my experience seemed in line with Bauer's first visit rather than his later visits that he reported. Pros: service, food more

Thank you 11/14/2004

this is just amazing. What a beautiful addition to San Francisco. Now I finally can be proud when I show off my town to my out of town visitors. The views are nothing short of spectacular and the food is just yummy. Very seasonal and right up my alley with lots of organic ingredients and top fresh quality. Service was very attentive and made us feel really special. What a huge improvement over the drab old space. Thank you. We'll be back many times more

Good food, long wait... 9/30/2004

Even with reservations, I waited about a half hour to sit down. The service was decent, prices are a bit high. The ambiance is very modern, not very romantic. The one thing that saved my experience was the food. more
