The Worst 11/16/2010

I have been living in Dumbo for almost four years, and have been sporadically eating at Superfine for years. Sporadically because while the food is usually good, the service is awful and the food is overpriced. However it's close by and the atmosphere is great. That said I will now never go back. Two weeks ago I reserved a table for 10 for 1:45 Sunday brunch. We had an elderly person and two babies in my party and for some reason they kept us waiting for 45 minutes for a table. The hostess, who is consistently rude every time I've ever eaten there, told me that the party at the table she reserved for me was there for over 2 hours despite the fact that they had a 1.5 hour time limit. So I said, ""Well, if you have a 1.5 hour time limit then why are they still there?"" She shot me a look and said ""Because they got here early."" Huh?? To which she then said ""Anyway, I didn't make the reservation so that's why this is happening."" I said, ""I'm sorry, but how would that have made a difference? She said, ""Because I know who eats here and how long they take."" HUH?? She shot me another awful look and walked away. It wasnt until my father approached the manager that we finally got seated, at a table for SIX! They crammed the seats around and it was only after we ordered 4 bloody mary's that they said they were on the house. Gee, thanks. We all ordered and when our food came it was clear to all of us that they were running out of food. Instead of telling us this they just eliminated ingredients from our order - instead of mozzarella in an omelette (as the special of the day suggested) there was cheddar. And barely any potatoes - seriously, it was like 3 slices of potato per plate. A total mess. My sister ordered the special pancakes which were with apple and currant compote. What she got were plain pancakes. She told the waiter, he took them away and in five minutes came back with the same plate with a three slices of apple on top. I'm sorry but this was the single worst brunch experience I've ever had. With no real apologies from the staff for the wait OR the horrible food. I never complain about a thing but this was beyond. DO NOT GO. more

really? It's my fault I can't get drinks or food? 6/10/2010

Dumbo destination Superfine is a Super-fail all the way around. Here's what happened tonight. After attending the Absolut Brooklyn launch party, we wandered over to Superfine. Jazzed by the buzz, we wandered in. A number of seats were up for grabs, so we grabbed one. Cat, the manager (I'll state that name and title again several times), finally came up and told us that to get drinks we'd have to order at the bar. But here was the cocktail menu. Fair enough, it's ""late."" I sidle up to the bar and order two Movie Stars (ginger vodka, ginger, and ginger ale -- very ginger-y). First drink completely finished. Part way through the second pour, things don't line up. I'm told there isn't enough ginger vodka and they have to ""make"" more. Ooohhkay. But they want to hold on to the first drink. Which is filled with small ice (which will dilute). I grab the finished drink and take it to my cohort. At some point we're hungry and try and order food. We see amazing French Fries. No table service, so I go to the kitchen counter, only to be told it's closed for the night (now approaching 11pm --- oooohhhh so late!). We're told there's a ""bar menu"" and it's at our table. Only it isn't. I return to the table and my drink finally appears. Eventually, after two or three people visit our table, the guy that told me there was a bar menu LITERALLY throws the metal menu on our table. (there's *one* vegetarian option, a multi-veggie panini. Fine. Okay.) We order the Veggie Panini and a Cheese Plate at 10:50pm, and are working our way through our drinks. Someone unceremoniously comes up and tells us our two drinks cost $22. I hand him the money. At 11:30 - nothing. No second drink order, no food. Meanwhile, people who sat down in tables we passed up are being served their food. Cat (the manager) finally comes by to see if we want another drink (my cohort is in the restroom). I say, ""could we have another Movie Star, but split it?"" She says, ""you have to go to the bar for that, and they want to start a tab"" ""Why did you ask us what we want to drink if we have to go to the bar, and why do we have to start a tab, when someone came for the bill before?"" I ask. Cat (THE MANAGER) says, ""well, you could have said I prefer to order the drinks from the table."" (Those are her EXACT words). I say, ""well I did say I would prefer to have French fries, over the food that hasn't come."" She says ""The grill's closed."" At some point (while my cohort's in the bathroom), a guy comes over and tells us that we haven't been forgotton. That the reason our mushroom panini and cheese plate are taking so long is that SOMEONE HAS TO HAND SLICE MUSHROOMS. Cat (THE MANAGER) comes back with the one drink at the same time our veggie panini and cheese plate show up (45 minutes later). Cat (THE MANAGER) tells my cohort (en route from the bathroom) that *we* ordered late, and it didn't take that long. My cohort has text message evidence that the order took 45 minutes. Cat, THE MANAGER, is unapologectic. In Superfine's defense, the veggie panini and cheese plate are very tasty. It could be because we're starving to death. The same can not be said, unfortunately, for the third Movie Star cocktail, over-sweet where the other two were nicely balanced. Superfine is apparently one long Brainfart. And for Cat (THE MANAGER) to blame us for not knowing that we could demand table service and for ""waiting"" to order is inexcusable. While the kitchen did an admirable job on our meager orders, the bar was inconsistent and the table service was inexcusable. Superfine is a Super FAIL. Pros: Decent food Cons: Horrible service, inconsistent drinks more

RUDE, RUDE, RUDE 12/5/2009

I am a local DUMBO resident and have been going to superfine for over 3 years on a regular basis. Today I called to make a reservation for brunch and enquired about high chairs - after being told one was ""sort of broken"" but ""your the parent you can take the risk, not my probklem' i asked in what way was it broken as we used it a week ago - I was told to hurry up and make a reservation as she was really busy! I hung up furious and will vote with my feet - never to return again. A real shame that a local business fails on every front to value its local customers. I will be making sure all my neighbours most of whom have young babies and children know about this incident too. Pros: Good food and setting Cons: Horrendously rude staff - won't EVER go again more

Won't be going back 11/25/2009

I thought this restaurant needed an updated review so I can break the bad news -- the service still stinks. Waited an hour after being seated for the food to arrive. I don't think it's a fluke. I have better things to do with my time. No thanks. Pros: Reasonable prices; space for large groups Cons: Bad service more

Terrible Service - Beware of Rude Bartenders 5/5/2009

I usually go to Superfine about once a month. While the food is okay, the service is hideous. On two occasions at the bar, my husband and I were completely ignored by all three bartenders. It wasn't even too busy but they just could care less and not be bothered. They're all a bunch of rude posers. One of them was even hitting on girls while we waited for ten minutes and finally left. I will not be back to Superfine. I hope DUMBO gets a few more bars with bartenders that are cool and want to serve their customers! Pros: Brunch Cons: Service more

love them! 12/21/2008

I have no idea where all of these bad reviews are coming from!!\r I have been to the restaurant more times then I can even count (different days, different hours) - it is basically my default place to eat while I am in DUMBO. The service has always been really great - everyone is super friendly and the food is delicious. I love their changing menu and strongly recommend the place. Pros: changing menu more

Great Food BUT Don't You Only Have a Few Minutes to Eat It 9/29/2008

We live in Brooklyn Heights and try to be big supporters of our neighborhood businesses. We were thrilled to stumble upon Superfine and excited to bring my in-laws to the restaurant for Sunday brunch. Equally exciting is the fact that they take brunch reservations so we were fans even before the first bite.\r \r We got to the restaurant about 15 minutes early and were greeted by a very nice hostess wearing a very hot cashmere hat. She sat us almost immediately and things were off to a great start. Our server was a nice hipster with an infectious smile and enough enthusiasm to make him charming but not so much that we felt like we were in a theme park restaurant. We ordered, our food came, we ate and it was delicious. We ordered desert, the bill came and then the wheels came off the car!\r \r As soon as we signed the credit card receipt (I was still drinking my coffee and we still had a bottle of water on the table) the manager (a tall thin guy with curly-ish hair) came over and told us that the next reservation was there and that we needed to get up. Can you believe that someone would be so tacky as to actually come over while we were still sitting and to say something like that. We hadn't even been there for an hour and were told to literally get up!\r \r We communicated our frustration to the hostess and she offered some type of lame excuse about the art fair and their being busy and overbooked, blah blah blah. She also offered to buy us a round of drinks as a peace offering. NO THANKS! \r \r I think this restaurant has a lot going for it and am glad it's around but I think the management should re-think their customer service strategy and/or get a freakin' clue. It's not rocket science, it's common sense! You don't do that. . .EVER!\r \r Not sure we'll go back but try it. The food is good. The atmosphere is cool. The manager IS A JACK.....! Pros: Food Cons: Management more

food tastes great....whack ambiance...bartender and hostess, not nice. 6/15/2008

description said live jazz...there was a loud, live, okay, country band....I preferred the recorded music\r Father's Day brunch fish tacos and french toast delicious, but not enough food on the plate for the tacos...more like a snack for a grown man\r I waited at the entrance for almost 10 minutes and finally approached a bartender about my reservation and she snapped that I should go up the ramp to the hostess as if I had been there before\r The hostess took several minutes to find my name and then told me it would be a while...someone made a mistake and did not hold our reservation and make room for us even though we made reservations the day before\r She was borderline nasty and retorted that it wasn't her fault and told me I'd have to wait and that I should be positive\r The waitress was nice, but the two nasty employees left a bad taste in my mouth\r DON'T BOTHER! Pros: taste of food Cons: nasty employees, loud and amateur band more

The servers really hold a grudge! 12/19/2007

A female friend and I went in early Friday night in mid November, and after being cat-called and hollered at for a full minute by drunk guys at the front of the bar, hurried to the back to the seating area for the restaurant. We were ignored by the waitresses while we waited to be sat. There were eight empty tables, so we took one. I found a waitress, explained the situation and asked if that was ok? Answer: No, it's really not. So I apologized, we got up, waited again, and she told us it would be around an hour since there were no tables for just two, but there was room at the bar. We apologized again for being rude, and went to the bar. This same waitress then sat a table of two right next to us! Then she gave our order from the kitchen away twice, so we didn't eat for 70 minutes. All because we tried to get away from the drunk guys shouting at us in the front, which it turns out the bartender (the one who found out about our orders) had told the guys that shouting at us girls was ok as long as we didn't turn around and walk out! The treatment was insulting. I know waiting tables can be hard, but we just made a mistake; we didn't get surly or fussy. We won't be going back. Ever. Pros: Nice space Cons: Service more

Great Wait Staff! What's with the kitchen?? 8/23/2007

First off I should say that I love the people who work here. The service can be slow (though this usually implies the kitchen - the staff try their best apparently to carry their weight), the atmosphere is fun, 'hip' and layed back - usually with good music. So unless your date's a total boor, don't let this stop you.\r \r My problem is with the food. Without the food, this place is just a big pool hall with one table. Here it goes:\r \r I have no problem with limited nightly menus (the menu is always on a chalk board) so long as the limited options you have taste good. \r \r The steaks are reliable (really good actually) and the fries are great IMHO. But if you're not into beef or pork chops, you're left to pasta and seafood. I'm not a big pasta fan when eating out, so I'm down to the seafood options.\r \r These are bland and ill-formed. My last seafood entree seemed ""assembled"", not cooked. The broth was barely seasoned. And the only accompaniment I can remember were some cherry tomatoes rolling around.\r \r Appetizers... My house salad was the least inspired salad I've ever had. I think it was basically all romaine with nothing else - not even dressing. This is a RESTAURANT. Come on! My girlfriend's calamari was unusual to say the least.\r \r It's possible the kitchen was just having a bad night. Happens. I've had great meals here in the past and I think the chef is the same. To be honest, had the salad not been so lame, I probably wouldn't have taken the time to write this. But it's such a basic thing. Hopefully someone will read this and make a few improvements because otherwise this place is really excellent!!!!!!! Pros: Atmospere, Service Cons: Kitchen is unpredictable. more

Yo, brooklyn in da house 7/31/2007

If you want to meet people who share a GENUINE interest in community, art, food, music and culture - come here and hol-lah, 'what, what.'\r \r Hands down, Superfine is my favorite place in Brooklyn. IT ROCKS for the locals and people representing other boroughs. Don't listen to the fools who say anything but the truth. Come see for your self and hang with some real New York lov-ahs. What.\r \r Peace. Pros: Fantastic space for dining, dancing (on some nights) and free pool table without hustlers Cons: Growing neighborhood with deep pockets pushing out the locals more

HUGE space! 6/25/2007

I went here the other night after a day at the office with some co-workers and had such a great time. The bar had lots of beer to choose from and the bartender was really cute :) My girlfriends and I were able to play pool all night without being bothered by any ""dudes."" It's such a great big space (which is so hard to come by here in NYC) and I really loved the vibe. Great staff, great drinks and the food looked really good(I didn't have anything that night, but my friend did and said it was delicious, will def go back and try it). I hear they have live music on Brunch, so will have to come by and check that out for sure. Pros: Great Space, Friendly Staff Cons: Hard to get too for some people more

Avoid this place. Terrible Customer Service 6/19/2007

here's a great anecdote about superfine:\r \r I got a burger for take-out, found a maggot squirming around, asked for either a refund or another burger.\r \r I got yelled at by the head chef for being wasteful. how about im just someone who is turned off by seeing something moving on my plate? how about i just paid 10 bucks for your burger? are you kidding me? the chef then proceeds to lecture me about how there are insects bigger than that crawling in the food i eat all the time. fair enough, i can get that education from my friends at the co-op. put more moving stuff on your dishes, see how customers react. i was dumb enough to be cordial.\r I left with my money, as well as a crazy chef screaming on me. feel bad because a friend works here, but seriously, folks at this spot need to get off their high horse. another high witty line from chef: 'youre probably someone who leaves the lights on when you leave the house.' it was a pretty productive dialogue.\r \r probably the first and only time i'll ever post on citysearch, but sometimes people can give you such inspiration. Cons: terrible customer service. worst ive ever had. more

Great Vibe, Great Food, Friendly Atmosphere 5/31/2007

I love Superfine! I don't even live in Brooklyn, but go there regularly, ever since attending their amazing Halloween party last year. It seems like my friends and I always end up there. It's funky and bohemian, but the food is top-notch. It's really fresh - local farmers provide mostly organic produce - though they still have decadent stuff like home-made bourbon ice cream and great burgers. i also love the scallops and turbot salad. It's one of the few places left in DUMBO where you won't get attitude, and I love that they have live music at Sunday brunch. They have a great bar scene and a pool table with lots of lounge seating around it, though neither are too close to the dining area. All around, my favorite place unless I need to go super-fancy. They also have lots of performance events and cool theme parties. Pros: awesome food, friendly atmoshere, nice and mellow bar scene, live music Cons: it's in brooklyn, though it's close to the F and A/C more

Contaminated food! 4/6/2007

I live in the neighborhood and know the restaurant scene well. I got so sick last Thursday immediately after eating a simple steak at the bar at Superfine and the female asian bartender told me to get the F OUT! as if I was drunk! Can you believe the bad service?? I am a young professional and was with my financee who had to take me to the hospital afterwards and watch me be sick for almost two days. I will never go back again. I can't believe this place doesn't clean up the food and get rid of the trashy bartender for her rude behaviour! Never again! Pros: Alternative Ambiance Cons: Contaminated Food and Horrendous Service from female Asian bartender more

Poor service, bad food, topped off with a long wait 11/28/2006

AVOID superfine for dining. Went for the Bluegrass Brunch, left respecting the fact that it really is all about location - there just are not many alternatives in DUMBO so terrible service still gets repeat customers. We had a reservation (4 people shouldn't be a problem, right?), waited 35 minutes to have our table cleared of people who were just chatting and zoning out, then waited another 40 minutes for our food. My fish tacos were bland, my friend's huevo rancheros were soggy, runny and GROSS - I'm referring to the beans and tortillas, don't get me started on the eggs. A friend's oatmeal arrived 10 minutes after our food. The french toast seemed to go over okay. Insincere apologies mean NOTHING - and comping us $2.50 banana bread was an insult. The music was good and I'd enjoyed myself here for drinks many times - this was unacceptable & I won't be going back. Pros: incompetent staff, TERRIBLE food - these are the PROS!!! Cons: the wait, insincere apologies more

Stupid lazy stupid Bartender, great waitstaff and delicious food 9/23/2006

I have been waiting a while for an opportunity to dine at Superfine. We got there, but had to wait since they weren't seating for dinner yet. The hostess said we can get a drink at the bar. Since I was with my parents, we only wanted some soda and my boyfriend wanted an iced tea. \r \r There are two bartenders bopping to the music and not paying attention to us. One bartender seems to be buddies with a couple down the bar and is getting them drinks, then paying attention to pieces of paper on the bar, then strolling up and down, basically IGNORING US for five minutes. Finally, she comes over (mind you there's almost nobody at this bar), and mumbles something. I ask if she has iced tea, and she goes on and on about ""I don't know, it's the end of the summer, how much you want to bet there's no iced tea, etc etc etc"" Then stares at me with her stupid cowboy hat and that ugly mole on the tip of her nose and WALKS AWAY. HELLO I STILL WANTED SODA. AND WAS THAT A YES OR A NO TO THE ICED TEA??\r \r We walk away really mad, and soon after are seated. We asked the lovely waitress if there was any iced tea, and she said Sure! WTF! I do have to say all the food at Superfine was delicious, and the waitstaff all very friendly and prompt. We had octopus to start and it was tender and tasty. I had pork chops which was also very good. The only food pitfall was the plum tart for dessert. Instead of a flaky pastry crust, it tasted like pizza dough. \r \r All in all, I would reccommend Superfine, but be wary of LAZY NASTY BARTENDER - UGH left such a nasty impression on my mind I don't think I would personally go there again. Pros: Delicious food, friendly waitstaff Cons: Rude bartenders more

scene is cool...food's okay... 8/10/2006

The fun part of Superfine on the crowded night we visited was that it seemed like we were surrounded by people having alot of fun. Definitely a great bar scene, interesting art on the walls. The space is really cool. \r However, we ate dinner and the food ranged from crazy to pretty good. The house salad was just bizarre- 8 pieces of lettuce with some vinaigrette, no other veggies at all. Weird and expensive. The salmon was very good, but the sides were off- too dry potatoes, too spicy rattatouie. People are right about sloooow service but the waitress was very nice... \r Don't think I'd go back to eat again, but definitely to meet friends for a drink. Pros: Great space, art, bar and fun crowd Cons: slow service and in-consistant food more
