Toasted Coconut cupcakes may be worth the carppy service! 8/13/2010

I first went with 3 other women--we all LOVED everything. For those of you wondering, we had a keylime tart, creme brulee, some kind of insanely rich chocolate cake and 2 varieties of cupcake: the aforementioned heavenly toasted coconut and the Wimbeldon. We left very happy.\r I went back with my husband who tried a different variety of cupcake and deemed it ""pretty good""...they did not have the toasted coconut that day :(\r Since then we have special ordered the toasted coconut cupcakes a few more times to share with friends and they always drawn raves. Do I sound obsessed?? I really don't even like coconut that much...they are just that good!! \r It is very pricey and the customer service is not great--but we are from NYC so we've learned to sometimes live with bad service for the things we really love. :)\r I always run into the same two young counter girls and they seem kind of clueless and bored with the customers. I have not yet met the dreaded Katrina...lol. more

That Is So Not Spice Cake 4/26/2010

Trying to find a spice cake here in the south is almost impossible. No people, it's not the same as carrot cake. So when my birthday rolled around, I gave my husband the almost impossible task of finding my favorite cake - yep, spice.\r \r He finally got a yes they do make it at Sugarland, which was recommended by someone he knew. He ordered the cake, and I must say, it looked fab.\r \r Then I cut into it. First thing wrong was that it had lemon filling! Really? That is so wrong on so many counts in the world of Spice Cakes.\r \r Scraping the lemon out of my piece, I tried the cake. The frosting was absolutely delicious. The cake - moist, but so bland it could have been pulped cardboard for all I knew. Spice cake is distinctively spicy - never bland. I was so disappointed that I didn't want to try that bakery again. It was expensive and they do not know how to make spice cake.\r \r Motto: Don't say you can do it if you can't. Pros: great frosting, large cake Cons: LEMON FILLING, bland cake, expensive more

Great Wedding Cake 1/28/2010

My son and his new wife ordered their wedding cake from Sugarland. Everybody says it was the best cake they ever had. The grooms cake was the carrot cake, which is every bit as good as they advertise. I can absolutely believe it won the state fair 4 times. They executed the designs beautifully and the whole process was as easy as pie. It was my favorite part of the wedding planning! Pros: Delicious Cake Cons: There are none here in Chicago more

Have a look at the pretty window displays and then move on 1/26/2010

Overrated is the word that comes to mind. Oh, and rude. The staff is super rude, almost as if they believe they're doing you a favor by letting you pay too much for mediocre treats. It's overpriced, by about twice as much as it should be. The cupcakes taste like $2 cupcakes not $4 and the gelato is nothing to write home about. Oh, and the coffee was also bad. All in all they have nice window displays and cute coffee cups. Pros: Nice decor Cons: SERVICE! Oh, and the food. more

Best Desserts I have ever Had 10/27/2009

I have always been a dessert hound, and I finally found a place that is as good as my Mom in turning out desserts to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings ( even she said so after I brought the parental units there). My favorite is the chocolate Mousse Cake, but I haven't had a bad dessert there yet. The cheese cake is super, eclairs are delicious, their cannoli are the best I've ever had ( they are filled with a chocolate riggotta with Amerana cherrie pieces & tiny chocolate chips - amazing taste. ) They have a huge case of hand crafted gelato made there at the store. Don't miss the Donatella, a mix of chocolate and hazelnut paste ! I like bringing dates there, because we can get sweets and alcohol at the same time. They make killer frozen cocktails with the gelato, so you can have a drink where it is quiet and classy, and they have a wide variety of the fruit beers that most girls like. Pros: Great Desserts, Nice Place To Bring a Date Cons: Haven't Found Any Yet more

Wonderful Discovery in Chapel Hill 10/23/2009

My friend who is a UNC graduate just introduced me to this place when I visited her this week. Sugarland is a unique dessert cafe, that features a full bakery, a gelatoria, in a meticulously restored 100 year old building. We shared several of the desserts, including a slice of a sinfully rich, but not overly sweet toffee mousse cake, covered with salty macadamia nuts and English toffee pieces with the name of Lumpy Bumpy Cake. My friend had the key lime tart, which also was to die for. We brought bake an assortment of cupcakes for the guys who had stayed at home watching football while we wandered Franklin St, and they wolfed them down, with special raves for the pumpkin chocolate chip ones, a moist pumpkin laced spice cake, filled with tiny, tiny chocolate chips, and covered with the best cream cheese icing I have ever had. It was so good that we went back the next day, and Donnie and I had the Gelato, and it was as good as anything I had had in my two trips to Italy when I was in school. The blood orange gelato is amazing, so complex and intense a taste in a creamy orange gelato. We are just over in Raleigh, and I can tell you that we will be back again the next time we are in the neigborhood. Pros: Outstanding Bakery & Gelatoria Cons: None more

Wedding Cake not worth the trouble 8/16/2009

When I first went to Sugarland for the cake tasting, I was blown away by the taste and made an all too quick decision to put down a deposit. Unfortunately, the taste was the only positive part of the overall experience. For those Bride's and Groom's that are looking for a wedding cake- let me just give you a few words of warning, hopefully before you put down a deposit. First off, Sugarland originally told us that they could make any cake for their base price, unless it had ""extravagant"" designs or decoration. According to the owner, 99% of their cakes are not charged any additional fees for decoration. 5 days before the wedding, I was informed that any sugar flower I may want to have would be $30 a piece extra, any fondant bow would be $35 a piece. In addition to that, basically any design I wanted would have to be done with a full covering of fondant (which I had said from the beginning I did not want because of the taste/texture) and would be an addition $1 per slice. When I received a final invoice (via email, having already charged my card), I was charged for an additional 16 slices... I needed servings for 120 and was charged for 136 people- supposedly it was the only amount that would make the cake look right. Beyond the pricing, there are many other cons about sugarland. The reviews about the owner are unfortunately quite true- she is moody and generally lacks people skills. However, I think the reason for most of problems with pricing was due to the fact that she quoted us with certain pricing options, but we were ultimately charged by the catering manager (who is generally sweet, but uninformed), and communication was not high on the list. Lastly, and this may just be petty, but my mother in law had her feelings somewhat hurt when she returned the cake stand the day after the wedding and the owner could not be bothered to talk to her and see how the event went. On a positive note, we have been told the cake was quite tasty. My husband and I didn't really get to eat any, except for a bite of icing =(. Too bad. Pros: Taste Cons: Service, Not up front about pricing... more

Best Desserts in the Triangle 8/16/2009

What a great place, everything is delicious, beautifully prepared, and the service was superb. Be sure to try the gelato, it was the best i have had since I was in Italy more

Decent cupcakes, bad service, overpriced 8/10/2009

I visited Sugarland on half-price cupcake day to purchase 10 cupcakes for a coworkers birthday. At the register, I was told that only the first four would be half off. Their sign does not indicate a limit, and I was pretty much stuck buying them or leaving empty handed. Each time I've visited Sugarland, I've felt slightly ripped off, but this one takes the cake. Never again. Pros: location Cons: price, service more

The service even more terrible than the goods! 4/25/2009

The baked goods certainly live up to the name...(overly) sugary without much substance. The gelato is OK, nothing to write home about. But the service! Oh, the service! The service is AWFUL!! Never going here again. Pros: gelato Cons: Low quality, high price, terrible service more

Blech...cupcakes HORRIBLE 3/26/2009

I took my kids here because I was so excited to find a bakery in Chapel Hill. My twins and I got the vanilla cupcakes and my son got an eclair. We all took one bite and threw the rest away. The frosting was granular and the cake was dry like carboard. You know it's bad when kids won't eat dessert!!! I was really disappointed especially considering how much everything cost. :( Pros: Um... Cons: Inedible bakery items more

Just average and that's it. 3/1/2009

Let me start by saying that I really want to love this place. It's obvious that the owners have put a lot of work into the look and feel of the place and it is a gorgeous place. That being said I always walk away from this place feeling a little ripped off. \r \r Their gelati are pretty good and they nail the fruit flavors perfectly. Their coffee is wonderful, but that is because it is Counter Culture and they make a wonderful product. Their espresso machine is top of the line and there is one girl working there who can pull an espresso better than some people at Driade's down the road. I actually had the second best cappuccino I've ever had here (the best being in Rome). Also, the baked goods (the ones behind the counter on the raised ledge, not in the case) are usually pretty fantastic. They make wonderful scones and an incredible chocolate doughnut. \r \r Now the bad. First, I don't know where they get off saying they have the best cupcakes in NC. Whoever gave them this accolade needs their head checked. Their cupcakes are awful, terrible, go in the garbage bad. First off, the cupcakes are often coated with fondant and topped with a sickly sweet, overly stiff buttercream frosting. I was shocked the first time I bit into one as the frosting under the fondant had granulated sugar (yes, really bakers, it was granulated) in it instead of powdered, it was like eating sand). Secondly, most of these cupcakes seem to remain in the case for days at a time making them stale and the frosting overly hard. I suggest avoiding most desserts in the case (except the lumpy bumpy cake and the cheesecake) as they are pretty terrible. My final gripe is their idea of iced coffee. Iced coffee is not made by pouring hot coffee over ice!!!!!! You cold brew iced coffee and any place that seems to pride itself on coffee should know this. Invest in a coffee toddy for the establishment! \r \r Sugarland can go one of two ways in the future. Improve their baked goods or sink into mediocrity. Pros: Excellent Coffees and wonderful breakfast pastries. Cons: Awful cupcakes. more

Expected Fantastic Treats for the Price... 2/26/2009

I went in to Sugarland to get a cupcake and something to take home to my husband. The cheesecake was almost 6 dollars a slice, and is a tiny little sliver. The vanilla cupcake was HORRIBLE, it looked like it had been refrigerated way too long, and the icing was really off. I took two bites and had to throw it away. I thought it would be sweet, but it had a bitter taste to it. I tried a peanut butter bar as well, and it was not good. Really disappointing, especially considering the price I paid. I'd rather have a cupcake from the grocery store than from Sugarland. Pros: Attractive store Cons: Not worth the price, doesn't taste very good at all more

OMG, Apple Cider donuts, so delicious.. 1/16/2009

I guess Sugarland has been around for a year or so and my best friend has us meet there for coffee about every two weeks. I usually have a coffee, which is good, but I am really not so much for sweets. We went in last week and they were sampling old fashioned apple cider donuts, which I haven't had since I left Michigan. They were so good, really apple-y and still warm from the oven. \r \r The store is pretty and it's very Chapel Hill, but those donuts are **MAGIC** Pros: Nice surroundings- DONUTS!! Cons: no parking more
