Let me start by saying that I really want to love this place. It's obvious that the owners have put a lot of work into the look and feel of the place and it is a gorgeous place. That being said I always walk away from this place feeling a little ripped off. \r \r Their gelati are pretty good and they nail the fruit flavors perfectly. Their coffee is wonderful, but that is because it is Counter Culture and they make a wonderful product. Their espresso machine is top of the line and there is one girl working there who can pull an espresso better than some people at Driade's down the road. I actually had the second best cappuccino I've ever had here (the best being in Rome). Also, the baked goods (the ones behind the counter on the raised ledge, not in the case) are usually pretty fantastic. They make wonderful scones and an incredible chocolate doughnut. \r \r Now the bad. First, I don't know where they get off saying they have the best cupcakes in NC. Whoever gave them this accolade needs their head checked. Their cupcakes are awful, terrible, go in the garbage bad. First off, the cupcakes are often coated with fondant and topped with a sickly sweet, overly stiff buttercream frosting. I was shocked the first time I bit into one as the frosting under the fondant had granulated sugar (yes, really bakers, it was granulated) in it instead of powdered, it was like eating sand). Secondly, most of these cupcakes seem to remain in the case for days at a time making them stale and the frosting overly hard. I suggest avoiding most desserts in the case (except the lumpy bumpy cake and the cheesecake) as they are pretty terrible. My final gripe is their idea of iced coffee. Iced coffee is not made by pouring hot coffee over ice!!!!!! You cold brew iced coffee and any place that seems to pride itself on coffee should know this. Invest in a coffee toddy for the establishment! \r \r Sugarland can go one of two ways in the future. Improve their baked goods or sink into mediocrity. Pros: Excellent Coffees and wonderful breakfast pastries. Cons: Awful cupcakes.
