Review content:
When I first went to Sugarland for the cake tasting, I was blown away by the taste and made an all too quick decision to put down a deposit. Unfortunately, the taste was the only positive part of the overall experience.
For those Bride's and Groom's that are looking for a wedding cake- let me just give you a few words of warning, hopefully before you put down a deposit. First off, Sugarland originally told us that they could make any cake for their base price, unless it had ""extravagant"" designs or decoration. According to the owner, 99% of their cakes are not charged any additional fees for decoration. 5 days before the wedding, I was informed that any sugar flower I may want to have would be $30 a piece extra, any fondant bow would be $35 a piece. In addition to that, basically any design I wanted would have to be done with a full covering of fondant (which I had said from the beginning I did not want because of the taste/texture) and would be an addition $1 per slice. When I received a final invoice (via email, having already charged my card), I was charged for an additional 16 slices... I needed servings for 120 and was charged for 136 people- supposedly it was the only amount that would make the cake look right.
Beyond the pricing, there are many other cons about sugarland. The reviews about the owner are unfortunately quite true- she is moody and generally lacks people skills. However, I think the reason for most of problems with pricing was due to the fact that she quoted us with certain pricing options, but we were ultimately charged by the catering manager (who is generally sweet, but uninformed), and communication was not high on the list.
Lastly, and this may just be petty, but my mother in law had her feelings somewhat hurt when she returned the cake stand the day after the wedding and the owner could not be bothered to talk to her and see how the event went.
On a positive note, we have been told the cake was quite tasty. My husband and I didn't really get to eat any, except for a bite of icing =(. Too bad.
Pros: Taste
Cons: Service, Not up front about pricing...
