Stoneground is a respectable restaurant, but too greasy to live up to its reputation. Salt Lake suffers from having no good local pizza establishments, and Stoneground is no excep...

A Favorite 7/3/2011

I LOVE the house salad. Something is in that dressing! Add chicken for $2 and ask for a roll or two, and you will be moaning! The tiramisu is not all it's cracked up to be... IT'S INCREDIBLE. I have literally driven here just to have it. It made there in house, and its really to die for. You have never had anything quite like this place! The quality is superb, the seating is nice, the atmosphere is relaxed.. and even the bathroom is interesting. This is very much a favorite of mine in SLC. more

Reliable and Wonderful 4/3/2011

I have been dining at Stoneground for years. This is my go to place to take out of town guests. My many friends from NYC are pleasantly shocked to be served authentic New York style pizza this far west. The ambience is superb, and its location on the second floor gives it a wonderful speak-easy feel. more

god-awful food 3/12/2011

Stoneground was OK a few years ago, but has really gone downhill. Went there twice recently (had two Living Social coupons to spend) and both times went away vowing to never go again. First time the pasta (seafood diavolo, since removed from the menu...hmmm) was so salty it was inedible, and so oily that I felt ill looking at the pools of grease on the plate; today for lunch the salad I had was obviously prepared last night with limp greens, rotten greens, dessicated shriveled cucumber, and mealy, disgusting tomato. What cook or waitperson would dare serve such a thing? A simple fresh green salad is something a child could make. The chicken parm sandwich was dried out, and had clearly been reheated under a broiler to the point that the edges of the meat were like jerky. I'm very angry to have spent any money at all at this place. Never again, when there are so many great and good and so-so places to eat in SLC. more

Poor Customer Service 1/30/2011

Terrible service. We brought our baby boy and there was such little food that he was getting restless. The manager told us that he was bothering others and we needed to keep him quiet. We were there on a Sunday night where they do the pizza 'buffet' all you can eat. We said that there was a lack of food to keep him occupied since he was hungry but they didn't care. We later asked if anyone had complained and they said no, so it's a non-issue right there. They then were pushy to get us our check, when we had had very little pizza because of how slow they were and how small the pizza slices were. The manager also rolled her eyes several times at us while standing right next to our table, after having just finished addressing us. That is definitely not customer service and the owners need to address it. Poor experience because of lack of customer service and will never return and will turn away all I know. more

Excellent Food, Fun Ambient, and Friendly Service 6/21/2009

We stumbled across this one. This is a small restaurant/lounge upstairs. They serve great food. We've been twice now and haven't disliked anything we've ordered. You will especially like the pizzas. Enjoy this one. Pros: Great thin crust pizza and salads more

One of the Best! 1/1/2009

If you're looking for a hip and quaint little joint with excellent food, this is the place! This was only our first time there, but we left very impressed. The atmosphere was very urban, college town with a hint of rustic mystique. The service was thoughtful, attentive and efficient, but not overbearing. The location is great being right across the street from the Library Trax station. The garlic-cheese bread was a wonderful start to the meal...very flavorful and cooked to perfection. The menu was loaded with traditional and non-traditional dishes, but, being that this was our first time there, we decided to go with the Stoneground Classic pizza. The crust was tender-crispy and the toppings were a great combination. There was a spicy perfection to this pizza that you don't find many places. I don't believe they use a traditional brick oven, but you'd be hardpressed to tell the difference. We will definitely return to see if their other menu items are as wonderful as the ones that we savored on our first trip! But be sure to get there early...the place really fills up in a hurry! Pros: Great ambience and even better food Cons: Fairly limited seating more

This Place Sets the Bar When it Comes to Pizza! 12/15/2008

I LOVE THIS PLACE!! The food is fantastic and there is so much to choose from on the menu. It overlooks library square and has a great mood about it. I love the Caprese and I want everyone to try it. Very professional and put together service. The pizza is delicious and can be as eccentric or as plain as you want they have all the toppings you could ask for. Very quiet and intimate perfect for a date. Pros: food, view, caprese Cons: parking is hard if you get there before 5:30p more

Delicious, Open Late, Fun Place 8/22/2008

I often go to Stoneground just because it's one of the VERY few places in Salt Lake where you can be seated after 9pm at a restaurant (I think seating stops at 11 or so - call and ask). I'm always impressed. My boyfriend loves the beer, I love the pork chops. And back when I was a vegetarian, it was veggie friendly. This place is highly recommended in my book. Pros: Pork chops, service Cons: Many other restaurants will pale in comparison. more

Great New York Style Pizza 7/18/2008

I had the pizza for the first time last night and it was like a fish finding water in the desert. Stoneground is a really classy place to get good pasta, beer and shoot pool, but the remarkable thing about this place for me is something that some might not appreciate; the simple but unsurpassed satisfaction of being served New York style pizza. I moved from New York to SLC six years ago and had their pizza for the first time last night and I tell you, this pizza place serves the thin, slightly crispy crusted pizza, with just right amount of sauce seasoned just the right way, topped with just the right amount of cheese that New Yorkers take for granted and that Salt Lakers might not appreciate, but that someone from New York dearly misses. more

Pizza good service and management horrible. 5/22/2008

Our party of 11 had made a prior reservation. The restaurant was fairly busy with about 60-70 people. As n oted on the table tent there would be approximately 10 minutes between servings when busy. Nevertheless, after an h our and a half our group had only been served 3 pieces of pizza ($12.99 +$2.90 tip included). When we requested more pizza and noted our concern to the manager he came to the table and didn't believe us because his server had made 10 passes and initialed each pass. Well he might have made 10 passes but with each pizza only serving 10-12 slices and about 70 people seated in the restaurant...you can do the math. No apologies, no understanding or compassion. I have been in the business for over 35 years and I was appalled. Their bio states that the owner moved from New York to Salt Lake City, well he should go back to New York if that is his idea of customer service. We do not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning. I teach Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts and have yet another example of poor Hospitality. Pros: Interesting pizza combinations Cons: The poorest sesrvice I have experienced in twenty years more

hard to believe 2/24/2008

Visiting Salt Lake City and my wife wanted a good pizza to enjoy in our hotel room instead of getting out in the bad weather. Found Stoneground on the internet. Called them and learned they do not deliver...no problem. Drove there on a Sunday night to get a pizza to go...they would not sell me one. Said Sunday night was only for dine in....WHAT!! They actually declined to sell me a pizza! I am 53 and travel quite a bit on business and pleasure...have never heard of such nonsense.. more

Great Pizza 11/12/2007

They have the best hot chix pizza - try it and you'll crave it like I do! Pretty good service - kinda what you would expect, they get very busy and since it's kinda small you want to get there early. Good place to hang out and have a drink with your friends - maybe play some pool too! Cons: Parking, Parking, Parking!!! more

Best East Coast (or Irish) Family Pub in Utah 6/30/2007

As a Utah transplant from the Northeast, our family (which does not drink or smoke) was accustomed to the relaxed atmosphere, unique cuisine and personal service of ""family pubs"" in New Jersey and New York. The Stoneground is like coming home. more

my favorite restaurant in downtown Salt Lake City 1/30/2007

Come for the free pool (2-5pm), stay for the pizza and pasta. more

Best Italian dining in Utah 1/2/2007

The person that owns this place is a genius. The service was out of this world. The pizza was perfect along with the selection of topping. Toppings ranged from meat, vegetable, and herbs. The pizza had great consistency and just plain looked good. The crab cakes and chicken wings were also made to perfection. The wine that was recommended to go with my entree was ""right on"". The candle lit tables and smooth jazz music just made my dining experience out of this world. Pros: great service, great food more

Don't confuse the waiters.... 11/14/2006

So - yeah - four professional women walk in and we each have our own special orders. Nothing too outrageous - salad dressing on the side, a roll with lunch, extra slice of cheese pizza. We immediately noticed our waiter wasn't writing it down - so we asked if he could. When he got back - wrote everything down. 45 MINUTES LATER our incorrect orders showed up - well - partially. The remainder showed up 10 MINUTES LATER THAN THAT! Our waiter - not very nice - pounding things on our table like it was OUR fault the kitchen was slow & he had messed up our order. When I kindly told him he needs to be nicer to his patrons and all he had to do was apologize - he gruffed and walked off. NOT going to be one of our regular spots. more

Slipping a bit, Yet still amazing 8/3/2006

I agree that Stonegrounds isn't the same as it used to be, it was my favorite pizza (The greek god was amazing!) but over the past few months the meatballs are a shadow of what they used to be. And I have been hearing similar feelings all around. Pros: Still has that undiscovered feel and inclusive ambience Cons: On the pricey side, but you'll be too full to care more

Pork tenderloin is splendid, superb, wonderful, outstanding, etc. 6/20/2006

A friend and coworker recommended I try the pork tenderloin at Stoneground and not only was I not disappointed, I have a new favorite meal of all time. The pork tenderloin is served with a cranberry mushroom sauce over polenta. Don't like polenta? Try it anyway. I am not a fan of polenta, but Stoneground's is incredible. It is crispy on the outside and almost like a corn custard on the inside. The cranberry and mushroom sauce went perfectly with the tender pork and polenta. My dinner companion had spaghetti and meatballs and enjoyed her meal too. For dessert we had the tiramisu and I'm sure we would have liked it a whole lot more if we had not been miserably full. Pros: Pork tenderloin was the best I'd ever had, wasn't terribly crowded Cons: Parking can be tricky, not enough desserts on the menu. more

AWESOME!! This Place Rocks! 5/8/2006

Always Great! Anytime that I go into Stoneground I have a WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE! I have been dining at Stoneground probably twice a week for the past 3 years. It is the first place I take a friend or relative when we go out. The food, wine and ambiance is AWESOME, and the service is consistent. I love the fact that they use fresh ingredients in all their dishes and that they don't even own a microwave! I suggest the Steve's Special and leave room for their Tiramisu.....They are both to die for!! Its been nice to watch this place grow and become the great local's spot that it is. Keep up the good work! STONEGROUND ROCKS!!!! Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly, Nice Atmosphere more

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible!!! 4/21/2006

The most horrible dining experience I have had to date. After being served microwaved, cardboard pizza, four, YES FOUR people in our large group dining were forgotten and never served their meals. After waiting an hour and a half, we finally asked about the meals, because others in our group were served, and were rudely told that it was a mistake and that we should be more patient, as if waiting almost two hours isn't patient enough. Not to mention that the waitress kept arguing with us saying that we hadn't ordered the meals. After the whole ordeal, I talked to the manager, and the rude waitress was standing behind the counter, interrupting our conversation saying ""they didn't order that."" Very, very unprofessional!! Hire some new help and work on your food, because that place is sinking FAST!!! We will never return. Cons: bad food, bad service, expensive more
