Just so you know, when you purchase a dog at a pet store, you are most likely perpetuating the continuation of puppy mills. Sure, your puppy may be healthy and live a long and hap...

A couple of months ago, I bought a dog from Steve's. I think it is a wonderful idea to let the kids play and handle the animals. How can you truely know if you want a pet unless you hold it in your arms and look into the animal's adorable eyes. And the people are supervised as they handle the animals. My grandchild wanted to hold a dog a few months ago, but the supervisor wouldn't let her play with the dog until her mother came. I think Steve's is a wonderful place to buy a dog. And I love what they have done with the new dog area. \r \r And no. Steve's does not get its dogs from a mill. more

I just bought a puppy from Steve's 2 weeks ago and I could not be more happy! Since I bought him I have been back to Steve's several times and every single employee has been so helpful. As soon as we walk in the store they rush over to visit with my dog and talk about how much they miss him. They all care about me and my dog and listen and help me as I ask tons of questions and in general just want to talk about my dog. When I bought him they gave me tons of info on his BREEDER, as he is NOT from a PUPPY MILL. They were very reasonably priced (I have even purchased several items from them that I found to be cheaper than corporations like PetSmart) and while some may disagree with the idea that dogs are handled by people I think it did wonders for him, as he is open and loving with people and well socialized because of it. In addition I like that I was actually able to make several visits and make sure that he was really the dog I wanted before I purchased him. He already had all his shots and was neutered upon me purchasing him. I am so happy with him and the services Steve's has offered to me and my puppy! more

I think Steve's is a wonderful place. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals. Yes, they do let you handle the animals here which, I think this is very important for a social animal. Whether it be a dog, bird, bunny , or ferret all these animals need interaction to be happy, healthy animals. I think some people who write these reviews are very ignorant in there thinking. If you ask me and you should (having a degree in animal management) Its good for these animals mental and physical well being to be handled. Obviously if you or your child is sick, DONT touch the animals. I think Steve is doing a wonderful think socializing the animals. There are rules as some below me might not realize. In order to play with a puppy you have to sanitize your hands and if the puppy you chose has been out to long they wont take it out for you. These puppies also do not come from a puppy mill. Most of the dogs are registered or are registrable for akc or others. They do not come directly from the breeder either. A company brings them to the store after they have been vet checked and chipped among other things. The puppies are very well taken cared for. They are exercised and given the best food on the market. Most if not all are on natures recipe (which comes from new zeland) and contains no hormones or additives. And for those against impulse buys...have you seen there prices for dogs??? As for the chickens they are rented not sold. After they rent is up they are sent to a egg laying farmer, they ARE NOT sold for meat. As for the dyed ones...big deal?!! that chick has no idea what color it should be or is. And its not hurting it in any way!! The tattoo fish are a bit much i'll admit but it doesnt hurt the fish. PETA just has it panties in bunch as always. (Just to be a informed consumer: PETA has no scientific community and are very anthropomorphic thinkers). All in all I have had very good service from Steve's!! I think other reviews are a little ignorant so before you dismiss Steves as a bad place, go there and ask questions. No staff member will refse to answer your questions! If you feel unsure about the animals well being or the process of the store, ask questions on why they do what they do, talk to Steve himself. Be a informed consumer!!! \r -willing to ask questions to answer yours more

First of all I would just like to say they are not all teenagers that work at Steve's, they're very knowledgeable about the animals they sell. All the animals are healthy and that's their most important concern, selling healthy animals to customers. Unlike other pets stores, the animals are able to be handled to socialize them which is great. Everyone is very friendly and they always offer assistance to meet individual customer needs. It's horrible how ignorant people are, if you have a problem with the store tell them so they can fix it! more

I have been a customer of Steve's for a long long time now, even before they started selling puppies. After reading some of the other reviews I felt the need to speak my mind of the store. Steve's has always been the best pet store around this area. That doesn't mean there aren't other good pet stores around but nobody takes care of their animals like steve's does. The staff that has been employed there over the years I've been a customer has always been extremely knowledgeable and cares deeply for the health and well being of the pets. I would argue to say that anyone that has a negative thing to say about steve's hasn't actually shopped there, at least not for long enough to make an educated statement. Anyone with a problem can ALWAYS find the answer at Steve's. more

I recently purchased my second dog from Steve's. Having heard that Steve's gets there puppies from puppy mills, I did a bit a research to find out the origins of my dogs. I was very disappointed to find that both of my dogs originated from commercial dog breeders (puppy mills). One in Missouri and one in Nebraska. If you have purchased a puppy from Steve's, check your paper work and search the breeder online. \r \r Though the puppies are treated well at Steve's and the staff there is friendly and knowledgeable, it doesn't change the fact that the parents of these dogs are living under terrible conditions. Not to mention that the dogs are outrageously expensive and their health history is not available. When I purchased my first dog, I bought her directly from Steve who assured me that his wife visited each breeder and that they only purchased dogs from reputable breeders. I guess I should have pressed more and had him define ""reputable"". \r \r I also have 3 friends who purchased dogs from Steve's at the same time that I purchased my puppy this past summer. We all purchased puppies within weeks of each other. All of their puppies had kennel cough and needed to be treated with antibiotics. Steve's did honor their word and paid for the medical expenses for these puppies. However, a co-worker of mine who purchased a puppy a couple years back, had more serious health issues. Steve's would not pay the medical bills but Instead told her to return the dog and pick out a new dog. Of course, she was already in love with her puppy and paid the expenses out of her own pocket and swore off Steve's Pets.\r \r I recently visited one of these commercial pet breeders when a friend purchased her puppy. The dogs were dirty and scared and afraid of human contact. I guess I have to admit my own ignorance and stupidity. I will not overpay for a dog from Steve's again. \r more

I've bought 2 dogs from Steve's & had wonderful service both times, even when they were busy & I had to wait a bit. Upon the first purchase, I was a newbie, & the salesperson coached me & gave me info that subsequently saved my puppy's life in an emergency situation. Their business practices were explained to me to calm my fear of puppy mills. The puppies were kept clean & care was taken for their safety while in a meet and greet. There was close supervision without intruding on the customer's ability to interact & there was no pressure to make a decision. They were very professional. I'll be back for my third fur baby. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 10/9/2013

Outstanding service and support. Unfortunately, they did not have a product that we were looking for and referred us to Petsmart where we had one of the worst experiences ever. This solidifies my loyalty as a customer of Steve's Pets. Their staff are empowered to provide great service to the customers, they are knowledgeable about the pets, cages, supplies, food, and just about everything else dealing with pets! A true pleasure to do business with! more

They provide great animal resources and information, even for the animal beginners. I suggest that people looking for a good place to shop for new or old animals, go here. They can answer all your questions about any problems or concerns you may have about your pet. And they will even give you tips on things you can do. more

RIGHT! This place is fantastic for all kinds of pet needs. They actually have animals right in the store. A fabulous place to take the kids to pick out their perfect pet. My daughter loves it here. She was able to pick out her perfect hamster and find all the essentials to make his new move a happy one. 5 stars doesn't cut it...I'll go one better and say 6. more

I've been going to Steve's for 15 years. Bought pets, products. My daughter and I have interacted with the puppies, ferrets, bunnies, birds and enjoyed every last moment. We still do and my daughter is now 22. Don't buy into the negatives that are the New York Citizens against Puppy Mills. Get educated on what a puppy mill is and what these ""witch hunters"" are not doing - going after the USDA - the governing body for Dog breeders. The animals are health and treated well, the staff is friendly and they do let you see more than 1 dog in a visit. Visit Steve's yourself and see. I'll be back there to cheer up a gloomy day. more
