I have heard that Steve gets his dogs from puppy mills. I don't know the validity of this claim -he has personally told me ""we get them from the best possible sources we can, and do a lot of research to make sure we don't use puppy mills"". I believe him, but I will say that with all of the neglected, abused and abandoned dogs in the world, I do not agree with buying a dog from ANY pet store. That said, the dog we adopted from a rescue shelter out West is the love of our life, and we understand -through a lot of reading and talking with vets and those educated on dogs- the best thing you can do for your beloved family member is give them high quality food. No table scraps, plenty of exercise, lots of love, and high quality food. \r
Steve's is the ONLY place in WNY that offers an extensive variety of high quality foods and treats. The staff -and we have probably talked to every one of them at one time or another- is very knowledgable on the foods -Protein %, fat content, what foods are good for what dogs, activity levels, life-stages, etc. Dog food is a science, and if you want the answers to getting your pet the food they deserve and need, go to Steve's. Healthy food also means a LOT less in medical bills, and a calmer, happier, more well-adjusted pet: all that for about 8 bucks per month more than the foods on sale at Walmart, which give dogs diarrhea...yeah, to us it's a no brainer. I agree that the prices can be a bit high when it comes to leashes, collars, stuff like that, but Steve's carries all high quality stuff. I could care less about our dog's leash, so long as it works -but for high quality bedding, crates, etc etc, once again nothing in WNY compares to Steve's. \r
We are a middle class family, who value our pets' quality of life. We don't overspend on them, but we do take their health, well-being and comfort seriously -otherwise, why even bother owning a pet? \r
I recommend this store highly. I'm confident any educated consumer/pet owner would agree. And if you ever have a question no one else can answer, you can talk to Steve, in the flesh. Try doing that at Petsmart.
