Great Brunch! Very good poached salmon and potatoes. 5/20/2008

Very good brunch. Fun to take Family or Friends. I love the location. I have not come for dinner yet, I need to try it. Very good service. Pros: Very good food Cons: A little expensive more

Quiet, Romantic, and Delicious food 4/30/2008

My husband and I went to the Slocum House for our anniversary last weekend. There has been a large difference of opinion by past reviewers as to whether the Slocum House is romantic or outdated. To me, this place has a timeless romance to it. If, however, you consider romantic to be chic and modern, you will probably find this place drab and stuffy. It definitely caters to an older crowd- we were easily the youngest people there. Pros: romantic, wonderful food Cons: not the best desserts more

Jekyll & Hyde.... 2/19/2008

I was very apprehensive going here based on all of the reviews; however, my wife and I decided to see for ourselves what it was like. The short and neat version of our dining experience could be summed up like this; very romantic, good service, great atmosphere, food could have been a lot better for the price. It was dark when we arrived but the front of the restaurant was very pretty with lights placed on the railings and around the front entrance. Very inviting. Some reviewers have complained that the inside of the restaurant was like eating at an old ladies house. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The table we were taken to first was in a heavy traffic area. I requested another table with they promptly and graciously took us to. The second table was very romantic and very secluded. Once seated the waiter (Michael) quickly greeted us. He was very friendly and attentive throughout the meal. The wait staff was non-intrusive but watchful. Our drinks never ran dry. We started the meal with an appetizer, Wild Baby Mushrooms with Crispy Polenta. Virtually tasteless. Disappointing start. Next we both ordered the same entree, New Zealand King Salmon, Oregon Bay Shrimp and Pacific Dungeness Crab Roulade. Bland... bland... bland. My wife mentioned that if it just had more sauce it would have been better. I don't think the sauce could have saved it. I really expected MUCH more from the food than this. We skipped dessert. I really don't mind shelling out $90.00 for a nice meal for two but I expect more. We didn't purchase any drinks from the bar so I have no idea what that was like. It was disappointing meal but to be honest, it was still a very romantic place to go for our post-Valentine's Day celebration. We decided that we more than likely won't go back. I wish I could give it a better rating but... 3 1/2 stars is about all I can do. P.S. My wife loved the chickens roosting in the trees just outside the restaurant. Pros: Good service, romantic Cons: Parking, bland food more

Ambiance similar to eating at an old folks home...food and service isn't much better 11/27/2007

I've heard rave reviews about this restaurant and I don't understand why anyone would eat here. My wife and I have eaten here twice (not by choice the second time). We felt that the brunch was better quality than the dinner we ate there, but neither meal was nearly as good as a typical chain restaurant (and I don't like most chain restaurants). Pros: Nice neighborhood, Free Range Roosters in the parking lot Cons: Food, Ambiance, Service more

So many places to eat in town - go somewhere else! Overpriced, Mediocre dining with chickens. Yuck. 8/13/2007

I went to brunch and was thoroughly unimpressed. The service was average, a little juvenile - making jokes about taking tequila shots and drinking champagne. We sat on the patio which was a nice setting expcept for the chickens. Pros: Nice patio in garden setting Cons: Mediocre food, dining with chickens who jump on tables more

This is the most overrated and overpriced place I have dined at in years! 8/7/2007

I read the posted reviews and was looking forward to having an excellent dining experience in a romantic atmosphere with the lady I planned on asking to marry me that night. I made reservations weeks in advance so could get the window table in a small roomby the fountain. I was told that we would have that table reserved and they said that they would let us have the entire room to ourselves if possible. This was more than I had even dreamed of requesting. I called again two days in advance and reconfirmed that we our reservation! Last night when we arrived we were told that they had no record of a reservation in my name but would try to find space for us. An hour latter we were seated in the main dinning room by a surly hostess. About twenty minutes later our ?server? came and took drink orders and then disappeared for a half hour. I truthfully have to say that our dinning experience only went downhill from here. The food orders were incorrect when we received them, I ordered the lobster and filet (medium) and my lady asked for prime rib as rare as possible. My filet was still bleeding and a good vet could have made it stand up and walk! The lobster was rubber in disguise? Linda?s Prime rib was closer to shoe lather than rare, totally uneatable. When we said that the orders were incorrect and were told ?I?m terribly sorry let me get those fixed for you? and took our plates and disappeared again. Linda and I looked at each other and knew we had had enough of this place and after a brief and quiet discussion got up and left! In the car as we were heading downtown to Old Sacramento Linda moved my jacket that I had removed and the ring box fell into her lap. She looked at it and jokingly asked me ?is this what I hope it is? holding up the box. I simply replied ?yes?. This was not how I hoped to have this occur but I am now an engaged man! more

BEST ANYWHERE 6/8/2007

My family has lived in Fair Oaks since 1925 and were aquainted with the original Slocum Family. We were pleased to see their home turned into such a fine dining establishment. Over the years we have all had many enjoyable meals there. Pros: AMBIENCE, SERVICE, PRESENTATION more

Good Friends - Nice Weather for Outdoor Dining - Upscale Restaurant - High Expectations - BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! 3/25/2007

People in our group of about 20 were hungry after attending a two-hour dance instruction workshop on March 24, 2007. We were all looking forward to dinner at the nearby Slocum House, which had a reputation for being a classy restaurant with ambience. Pros: Ambience OK Cons: Very Slow and Poor Service more

A complete disappointment 3/24/2007

The soup was served cold, the server was surly, waited an hour and a half for our entree, the food served was not as described on the menu. Pretentious, overpriced, and a complete disappointment. Pros: Soup was tasty, but cold Cons: Server was rude and very slow more

Great food--not as romantic as claimed 12/9/2006

My husband and I went to the Slocum House last night for my birthday. I was expecting the restaurant to be very romantic based on the other reviews. I think the Slocum House needs a bit of an update as the interior is a bit dated. I found The Firehouse to be much more romantic. But the food was excellent....I had a lamb shank and my husband and a filet and both were excellent. The service was good but I would expect good service with the prices they charge. I would go back...for the food....not for the ambiance. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Needs a bit of an update more

Most romantic restaurant with fantastic food around! 12/1/2006

Last Friday night my friends took me out to dinner for my birthday. Much to my surprise we went to the Slocum House. I had heard soooo much about it. And I must admit it was one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. First we sat outside on a wonderful evening, warm but not to hot. They had a great band playing and it was a perfect backround for dinner. They had a cool drink list that included an espresso martini that I really liked. My friends had a bottle of rose` that was light, dry and refreshing with a taste of strawberrys. Our sever was smart and helpful and not all stuffy. One thing that we all noticed was how clean the place was. Even the bathrooms were spotless. They have these pretty chickens that stroll aruond the gardens. One was even walking with her baby chicks ( 6 of them)! We split an order of crab cakes and ahi cones. We all agreed that the crab cakes were without aquestion the finest we ever had. All jumbo lump crab fresh and clean tasting needing only a little squeeze of lemon. Perfecty cooked in butter(i think). And the ahi cones reminded me of Hawaii. I could have been happy with just those! We all shared entrees of wild salmon, filet mingnon, lamb and huge prawns. All the entrees come with soup or salad, vegys and killer mashed potatoes. We had an absolute blast. For dessert we all had creme brulee. Really good too. We stayed until way after the band left. Just sat and chatted on that wonderful courtyard with little twinkle lights that are so romantic. I wish every time I went out for dinner it would be like that. I really can't wait to go back. As we left I asked about the entertainment and found out that every weekend including Sunday they have light jazz on the courtyard through October. If you are thinking about going we sat on table 92. Very private with great views for watching the band. Pros: Food, Service And Very Romantic Setting Cons: The Restaurant Sits On A Hill So If You Don't Want To Walk Up The Steps Park In Back more

Dinner with my Mother 11/3/2006

I had a wonderful experience on Friday at the Slocum House. Pros: Great service, excellent food, and beautiful facilities. Cons: I had to pay. more

Not worth the horrible experience 8/12/2006

We were given a gift card by a client of ours to the Slocum House. We had been there before and found the food was not worth the price but decided to try Sunday Brunch. We had made reservations to sit outside and we were seated at the ONLY table with no umbrella. We asked to be moved only to be told it was the only seat available. Our waiter was simply awful, the worst I have ever had but the food was very good, surprisingly good. The bad service overshadowed the food. We waited for over 35 minutes to order (anything) and then had to wait another 25 mintues for the check! We gave Kent the gift card when he finally gave us the bill. He came trotting back (the fastest he had moved in 2 hours)...yes we were there for over 2 hours! He said Wow! you have a lot of money left on this card, how about I add my tip to it. My husband said, no we would pay cash for the tip. He was gone another 10 minutes and finally came back to bring us the card but nothing else. Pros: nice setting Cons: They hire thiefs more

Chicken house! 6/9/2006

Food was fantastic as was the service, beautiful house and patio/garden, lovely music, good wine (had the Slocum house Cab-Sav), and chickens everywhere!! Apparently, the chickens are protected by the City of Fair Oaks, belong to no one, and roam free on the streets! The good news is that they are clean and non-invasive, except for the Roosters' occasional cok-a-doodle-doos. There were about 10 baby chicks running around too that were absolutely adorable. Having chickens, roosters, and baby chicks running around our feet at dinner was definitely a fun new experience for us! Pros: food and service Cons: chickiens more

Not French food 4/30/2006

I wouldn't say this restaurant is French food at all, I agree with the last review that it was more of an Asian Fusion. You walk up to a very nice Historic home the service is great, I was surprised it would of been nice to see some nicer tables & chairs in this restaurant. I want to go back in the summer time to enjoy the outside seating. Blue Nose Sea Bass and Black Tiger Prawns very good, Fire Grilled Australian Lamb Noisettes good & the Wood Grilled Hanger Steak was also very good. I really enjoyed myself here. Pros: Food, Ambeince Cons: Hard to find more

Should be Better 8/4/2005

I came here for a special romantic dinner after hearing all the wonderful things people say about it. I was underwhelmed to say the least. The surroundings were lovely and they certainly tried hard to give us a fine dining experience. However, the food was only average in my opinion. I had just come off a Celebrity Cruise that boasts top-quality french fare and they had Slocum House beat by miles! Perhaps if I hadn't just come off that cruise I would have been more inclined to enjoy the meal, but I doubt it. I just expected so much more. Pros: Ambiance and Gardens, Location, Service Cons: Food, Price for Quality more

Totally Disappointed! 10/3/2004

After years of hearing about this restaurant, I finally had the opportunity to try it and what a disappointment it was. Although the food and the ambience are great, the poor service outshadowed all of that. The bus person did his best, however, the server continued to make excuses the entire evening for the slow service. We were asked if we were doing ok after dinner was served, nor were we asked to see a dessert menu. Drinks were practically non-existent. I will not go back even though the food was decent. Pros: good food, nice ambience more

Slocum House Has Incredible Ambiance 2/13/2004

The ambiance in this restaurant is amazing. It is romantic, quiet, and secluded. You can be sitting only a table away from another couple, but feel you are in your own world entirely. My fiance made reservations when we went; we arrived a half hour early and were seated promptly and treated as royalty. The waitstaff was fast and efficient, but did not linger or rush us, and gave us plenty of privacy while still maintaining our table (keeping glasses full, keeping bread basket full, switching courses, etc.) I would definately reccoment this restaurant for Valentine's day, or any other special occasion. Pros: Romantic Ambiance, Prompt Staff, Courteous Staff more
