Tune up and learn some 4/20/2011

These folks are very helpful and offer great service. I recently traded up for a fixed gear bike, Although much easier to work on, my bike gets more abuse and these guys have been lifesavers. Thanks a bunch. more

The Right Bike for You, even if you're lost 3/4/2011

Seven years ago I bought a bike for my Wife to ride about twice a year, and they answered my questions and sold me a cheap bike $150 that still rides well. Last year I walked in with a BUNCH of conflicting parameters for what my bike MUST BE. They looked a little confused by my logic, and informed me until what I said made sense. I rode home on a great Kona with a custom basket for about $400. I use this as my daily commuter and bring it in every six months to make it ride like new. I bring misinformation every time and learn something new with each visit that my terribly abused bicycle makes to jerks down on Milwaukie Ave. more

A dissappointing experience. 5/20/2010

Individual seemed put-off by simple inquiry regarding the price of a common bike shop service; would not simply provide the cost of the service. Was argumentative when asked questions regarding their stock of parts... There was a 2:1, staff:customer ratio at the time. Really would not care to go there again as I don't want to interrupt them. Pros: Quality Bikes and Components Cons: Condecending more

I?m crazy about these jerks and my spicy new Kona! 3/12/2010

Whether you know something about bikes, or don?t know jack like myself, this local shop is one to write home about. I was originally impressed with their website and how up-to-date the inventory was for not only new bikes, but used as well. I purchased a 53cm 2009 Kona H0NKY T0NK yesterday afternoon and the site was already updated this morning with the size listed as no longer available. I have Jason to thank for my well equipped new ride (he even through in a bell and a beer while I waited for them to install my fenders ? but no kick stand, as I was quick to learn that kick stands are for sally?s). I interacted with almost every jerk on staff in the process and found them to be more like gems. Thanks again for everything! I?m definitely a repeat customer in the making. more

Good service, good selection. 2/9/2010

Wasn't necessarily planning on buying a bike today when I went in there, but I wanted to feel the shop out to see where I would want to give my business to when the time came to purchase my first bike. After talking to Jeremiah for a while, he helped me feel confident about making a purchase per his advice today. I went into a couple other bike shops before this and I got the best service here by far. No pressure, no ""salesman"" feel, just good advice. I will definitely go back to Sellwood Cycle. Pros: Good service, knowledgeable, friendly Cons: Far from the 'burbs. more

Good local shop 11/14/2009

I went in for a cable and housing. They were willing to help me buying a $3 part just like it was a $300 part or a $3000 bike. What a great local shop. I will go there for all my family's needs for our 11 bikes. Pros: Ready and willing Cons: Small and crowded more

Personal service and amazing competence 8/21/2009

I initially went to them because another shop had overtightened the spokes on one of my wheels, leading to a rim failure, and Sellwood Cycle Repair offers a lifetime guarantee on wheels they build. The two wheels they built for me are the best wheels I have ever owned - rock solid, and go years without needing trueing. The owner, Erik, also was very, very helpful when it came time to replace my crankset - Shimano no longer made the crankset that came on my bicycle originally, and he researched the best choice for a replacement. Of course, it worked beautifully. I've also gone in to ask about a ticking noise in the crank, and one of the employees spends a couple minutes explaining how to adjust the crankset tension for me. More than that, however, I'm just continually blown away by the fact that Erik greets me by name - ""Hi Kurt"" - despite the fact that I rarely need to come into the shop more than once a year. Hundreds of bikes go through that shop every year, and he somehow remembers the odd commuter guy with the old Trek. Amazing. Pros: They build fantastic wheels, and they care about me Cons: Sometimes it's quite busy in the shop more

My kind of jerks and I think yours too 5/3/2008

After trying to get good advice and service in one shop, I realized that I was doing the wrong thing researching bikes - what I needed to do was research bike shops. These guys are the only shop in town that, apart from the"" bunch of jerks"" review here (buy the tee shirt), had nobody moaning about them. Pros: Know their stuff, flexible, cool ""what a bunch of jerks"" tee shirts, polite Cons: Smaller friendly shop means busy on Saturday, not really a con, but go in the week if you can more

Guys That Love Bikes 3/13/2008

Yeah, I've visited this place before, good experience every time. I like the joint as I believe the blokes love bikes in general. You don't have to love me but you do have to love my Huffy texas steer banana seat saddled tasseld gripped steed. If you want to be fancy and buy new clothes for your once a year ride in the shuttle vehicle but you look cool, this is not the place to go as they will sell you a ""What a Bunch of Jerks"" shirt. Sometimes the smell of B.O. eminates from the pores in the walls but this is tolerable. By the way, the old man behind the counter is actually really smart and not a bad guy, be aware of the mold spores on him. Pros: Service, Child Friendly more

NEW BIKERS NEED NOT APPLY 7/28/2007

I WENT THERE TO ASK ABOUT A NEW BIKE I WAS VERY EXCITED I WANTED THE OLD MAN BEHIND THE COUNTER TO ANSWER SOME VERY EASY QUESTIONS! I HAD TO BUY MY BIKE AT RIVER CITY BICYLCLES THEY WERE MUCH NICER AND NOT RUDE TO ME. more

Great shop and mechanics. Useful website with inventory to shop. 4/27/2007

I've been mountain biking for 15 years, so I'm familiar with buying bikes, and getting them serviced. I took my bike into Sellwood Cycles for a tune-up on a recommendation from a cyclocross friend. They quickly helped me with several people already in the store. Checked out my bike and gave me the scoop and a very accurate quote. No surprises. They told me that my bike would be ready Thursday afternoon and I was able to pick it up a day early. Picking up my bike I asked some ignorant questions about cyclocross as I've always rode mountain bikes and they were very helpful and insightful. They did have a limited selection of bikes but this is not your typical bike shop, Sellwood Cycles has a great website updated daily so you can check out their new inventory everyday. Plus they buy nice used bikes, not the neighborhood clunkers. This is the place you'll most likely find that gem deal. Having been in Portland for seven years I have explored nearly every bike shop in the metro area and will be making Sellwood my regular pit stop. Pros: Great mechanics. Friendly, educated staff. Shopable website. Buy and sell used bikes. Cons: limited new brand bikes. more

Thanks Jerks! 4/12/2007

I took my bike in for consignment and ended up buying another one. The staff were excellent in answering my questions and offering honest advice, not trying to oversell or push me into a more expensive bike. These are down to earth, honest jerks. What more could you ask for? I would recommend these guys to anybody. more

What you hope for in a bicycle shop. 8/10/2006

Not Such Jerks After All... 7/31/2006

Despite the ""what a bunch of jerks"" review (and the tee-shirts they sell in its honor) I have to say these guys do a great job. They refused to quote a tune-up price for me over the phone and insisted I bring my bike in so they could see what I actually needed to have done. Now, I probably wouldn't have bothered had I not been unable to get an appointment anywhere else in the next century, but boy am I glad I did. Most places will charge you $40-50 for a tune-up. These guys let me in after they had officially closed for the day. Took one look at my bike, said all it really needed was new brake pads and charged me half what I would have paid at any other store. Thanks guys! Pros: honesty: they won't quote a price unless you bring in your bike Cons: they won't quote a price unless you bring in your bike more

Genuine Gentlemen 8/16/2005

My brother and I crashed on the Springwater Corridor during Bridge Pedal. Not only was my bent wheel replaced with an extra from the shop, but my brother's totaled bike was traded with a functional one so he could finish the ride. In our extended dealings with the shop we encountered nothing but a genuine concern for our well-being. They had no responsibility to supply us with these extras, but also had no reservations in doing so. Sincere guys at a nice local bike shop. They should be commended. more

What a bunch of Jerks 6/4/2002

The staff was completely rude and arrogant. Selection is minimal. Customer service was horrid. This is your bike shop if you want to catch a load of attitude and snickering from the staff. They couldn't bring themselves to listen without cutting me off mid-sentence. Absolutely zero customer connection. more
