Editorial review from Citysearch 9/5/2012

I was introduced to Pride N Joy the beginning of this year. Conveniently located on Ventura blvd. & Woodman. Love the staff, the suppiles they offer and the quality they offer for dogs and cats. I have a regular groomer that I have used for years, but one of my dogs needed grooming and I couldn't wait for an appointment so I took her to Pride N Joy. She's a bit skittish so I was a little concerned, but after she was groomed, she was so happy, looked great and they did exactly what I wanted. She's pretty furry, so I wanted a nice trim to relieve her from the heat but enough to protect her for the cold months ahead...(?) If it get's cold.... more

Loyal Pride n' Joy customer 2/21/2012

I've been taking my dogs here since I got them and they have always been treated like family and they do an amazing job on both. I have on terrier mix who needs more of a hair cut and he always comes out looking so cute and my other, a lab mix also looks so beautiful. They really love the dogs they groom and it shows in every way. You may be able to find some place that charges a little less but it's not worth it, you get what you pay for and it's worth every penny to know my dogs are being treated and cared for as if I were doing it myself. more

Loyal Pride 'n Joy Customer - 2 Paws Up! 1/24/2011

First of all, I have to address all of the negative comments below. I have NO IDEA what grooming shop these people have gone to, but it can't possibly be the Pride 'n' Joy that I've been taking ALL of my dogs to for the past 14 years. We started taking our dogs to Pride 'n' Joy when it was located next to Barone's, in the strip next to Taco Bell (which has since been bulldozed). They moved up the street a few years ago and we've supported them since. Sure, other fancier places have moved into the neighborhood, but I'm a loyalist. They have always done well by me and I will reward EXEMPLARY service with my loyalty. There is a low turnover on groomers at the Sherman Oaks shop, which says to me that they're doing something right. We've had a house full of dogs over the past decade and a half and all of them have been to Pride 'n' Joy at one point or another. From our Great Dane to our Shepard / Chow to our terriers, they've always come out looking great and feeling clean and happy. Even our ""difficult"" chihuahua / doxie mix gets his nails cut there without a fuss. Jose is gentle with him, and he leaves without even noticing that he just had a pedicure. Not only are their grooming services TOP RATE, but the people are also full of heart. When I recently adopted a new dog from the Lancaster shelter, Jose, the manager, not only refused to groom her (because she was too thin), but he gave us some free puppy food because the poor thing was starving. Since he couldn't bathe her, he wiped her down gently with some hand wipes and clipped her nails, GRATIS. Once she is at her optimal weight, we're bringing her in for her first official groom. The shop in Sherman Oaks also sells top-quality dog foods, and is knowledgeable about the foods that they sell. Another plus in my book. And also another reason why I'd buy my dog food here and not at a store like Petco. I also don't know what the ""they don't have any windows"" comment is about. There is a window DIRECTLY BEHIND THE CASH REGISTER looking straight into the grooming room. Plus, you can bring your dogs straight into the back door, right into the thick of the holding area. You can watch your dogs while they're being groomed - and they'd even welcome you to sit with them if they were having problems, or were scared. I really feel a need to defend these negative comments (in fact, its making my blood boil a bit), because this is a place full of love and EXPERIENCED groomers. I'm just perplexed by the negative reviews. Makes me wonder if they're planted by a disgruntled ex-employee or something. Seriously, it's the only way I can imagine someone saying something negative about this place. So if you live in the Sherman Oaks area, I urge you to SHOP LOCAL, and support your local area businesses. Pride 'n' Joy gets two-paws up from this household! I wouldn't go anywhere else. And if you want to talk to me personally, I urge you to private mail me. more

About Tony 8/1/2010

Over the years I've taken 4 dogs to Pride N Joy. The 1st dog had clipping anxiety and Tony was the only person in the Valley who could successfully clip her nails. (I'd tried a lot of places.) The 3 dogs I have now are all rescues and were abused in their previous homes; I have driven up to 40 minutes to get them to Tony for nail clipping. In fact the latest dog had been heavily abused and is horrifically neurotic; Tony and I sat on the floor of Pride N Joy for about 20 minutes while Tony calmly introduced the dog to a mild brushing. Very impressive. Anyway, I just found out that Tony has transferred to Top Dog Grooming in Northridge, so I'll be switching to there instead. I'm giving P-N-J a neutral rating since Tony is no longer there. Pros: Tony was there Cons: Tony's not there any more more

HORRIBLE! ABUSE ANIMALS: WHY ARE THEY STILL IN BUSINESS?!?!?! 8/18/2008

I've used these people several times before for my dogs; they were highly recommended to me by a celebrity's mother years ago. Also, I never owned dogs before so I'd never been to other groomers. I guess that's why I stayed as long as I did; I kept believing them when they'd tell me that my dogs were problematic and wouldn't hold still. They are so MEAN to the dogs!!! My poor male dog was actually BLEEDING from his genital area the last (and final) time I took him there. I'm a strong person and I literally railed at these people about this and they all converged on me at once telling me that my dog was ""aggressive"" and ""didn't like people"" and that he had ""knots"" in his fur so he was obviously not treated well at home. God, I wanted to flog them! On a prior occassion, when I took my dogs there before this last problem arose; they would CALL ME ON MY CELL PHONE - after I'd dropped the dog(s) off - and say, ""Why won't your dog hold still?"" (Isn't it THEIR job to control pets??? What am I supposed to do about that over the PHONE??) Obviously - in hindsight - it's because they were brutal and mean. My FAVORITE complaint from them was - get this... - that I hadn't (1) brushed my dogs first prior to bringing him in (2) hadn't' BATHED them first - yes, they actually did say that... and (3) they hadn't been in for a while for their grooming so they didn't know why I was even coming back!!! I said to them, ""Gosh, If I have to BATHE and BRUSH my dog before bringing him here than what purpose do you people serve?! What does 'Dog Grooming' actually mean at this place?"" God, I just KNOW that they abuse pets - I've heard loud yelps from the back room whenever I'm over there. PLEASE DON'T TAKE YOUR PETS HERE AGAIN!!!! Buyer Beware.... A much better place is the BIRD HOUSE at 5742 Lankershim in North Hollywood - only about five miles away from Pride & Joy. Pros: The only ""PROS"" are that - fortunately - there are better groomers to chose from Cons: They hate animals; that's the worst part of their business more

grabbed dog by throat! 8/10/2008

This is a tough review to write because I've taken my dog to Pride and Joy three times and have been pretty happy. The last time I went to pick up my dog, I was a small, grey poodle being groomed in the back room. The groomer had the dogs ears pinned back with his hands and was using them to control the dog's head. Obviously, the poodle wasn't too happy and was showing teeth. The groomer then grabbed the poodle by the throat and shook him a bit. He then put the the leash/harness around the dog's neck. I mentioned to the guys at the front desk that the groomer looked pretty aggressive, but they assured me that it was OK. Pros: The guys at the front desk are always friendly and helpful. Cons: Saw a groomer grab a small dog by the throat. more

Horrific !!!! DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE IS WORSE!! 7/8/2008

I wish I would have read the reviews before I went .. they SHAVED ( red irritation and "" racing"" stripes)...Wheaten Terriers... AND DIDN""T EVEN CLEAN OUT THE EARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The customer service from Tony Tsui is even WORSE The groomer was FREDDIE and the front desk guy was Freddie too HORRIBLE I tried to keep business in our cimmunity but why should I care if THEY DONT!!!! Pros: NOTHING Cons: CHARGED FULL PRICE FOR A SHAVE x 2 more

Never again... 9/24/2007

I will not go back again! I've taken my dogs there on 3 different occassions and the same thing always happens. The groomers are extremely lazy because they only do a partial job. I always request a bath and trim. Whenever I pick up my dogs there's always alot of work missing, such as only half of their nails get trimmed, or only 1 of my dogs will get it's ears tipped but the other doesn't...even though I want the ears tipped for both of the dogs. Sometimes one dog will get all of its nails trimmed and the other won't get it's nails trimmed at all. I've asked for specific things to be done such has trimming the hair around the rear end or belly and when I pick them up, the hair has been untouched! I had to take my dogs back last time to get them to finish the work that I paid for and the groomer gave me a very irritated look like I was wasting his time. Well, if he would've done the job right the first time I wouldn't have to go back. I'm wasting my time as well having to haul my dogs back to the groomer to get the job done right. This time around the groomer didn't trim any of their nails and I didn't have time to take my dogs back to get it done so I went ahead and trimmed them myself. I'm basically paying $35 for a halfass job on only one of my dogs while the other doesn't get trimmed at all because apparently the groomer gets too lazy by the time he gets to the other one. I could do a better job for free! I've given them more than enough chances to redeem themselves and I definately won't be taking my dogs back there again. Pros: none that I can think of Cons: where do I begin?! more

My poor dog looks like he got buzz cut from the Marines! 3/30/2007

To be fair, I have taken my dogs to be groomed on three occasions and they all came out looking great. But the last time I took in my Labradoodle, they made a mess of him. The receptionist was quite comprehensive in asking questions about how I wanted the dog groomed. He and I spoke to the groomer. I comb my Labradoodle daily, so there is no need to shave him. I told them to cut 1/3 of his hair off. Instead they left only a bit of hair on, and the cut is highly uneven. He looks as if he had to be shaved because I didn't take care of him, and there was no option but to cut his hair quite close. Pros: They did offer to try to help, but truly nothing would help except hair extensions. (I'm joking of course!) Cons: Terrible hair cut on my dog, didn't follow my highly specific directions more
