Best 9/2/2011

I am writing to let you know how GREAT Portage Park is. Pam, who has been there for over 20+ years is great and knows everyone. In fact everyone there is wonderful. My owners have brought me here since I was a kitten. They are always kind and gentle. A few weeks ago, they discovered I had cancer and my chances were very slim that I would survive surgery. I was 14 years old (and 90+ in human years). They did some tests and a few procedures that I did not care for, but they were to help diagnosis me. They found out that I had cancer and that my chances were slim that I would survive surgery. They left it up to my owners to make the decision. So, even though I was in pain, I waited until I knew my parents were ready. It didn't take they too long to know that I wasn't getting any better and that it was time. Today, they took such good care of them, helping them through the process of letting me go. They held me for as long as they wanted to, and they talked to me while I drifted off to sleep. I could see them from Heaven that they were really sad that I was not there anymore, but also they were glad that I was no longer in pain. Portage Park physicians, Dr. Olson, was mine, and her caring and thoughtful staff, made the process from earth to Heaven peaceful. So since this is my first day in Heaven, I need to explore, My owners parents were they to greet me and to show me around, and my owner's first cat, muffin, was also there. Portage Park is the cat's meow. more

Loves our Gaby 11/1/2010

My Basset Hound Gaby has been going to Portage Park Animal Hospital and seeing Dr. Olsen since she was a puppy. She has received all of her shots there, been spade with Dr. Olsen, and been treated for multiple ear infections due to her breed as well. We have been treated, and more importantly Gaby has been treated, with nothing but kindness and the utmost care, love, and respect. When Gaby needed a referral to a specialist for surgery we were referred out to a surgeon that could perform the procedure that produced the best results. Our dog is one of our children and when multiple appointments has been needed, Dr. Olsen has made sure not to charge us for the return appointment, as it was a "check up." She, and the practice in general, is not concerned with making money but the health of our pet. We will never go to another vet they are the best. They have proven time and again they love our dog as much as we do. more

the counter staff is good, but the vet staff leaves alot to be desired 1/29/2009

My cat needed to have his teeth cleaned, they offered to allow me to drop off my cat on a Thurs. night to have the teeth checked an cleaned the following day (Fri) Imagine my surprise when I returned to pickup my cat on Fri. at 5:00pm and was told they had a very busy day and had not yet even looked at my cat. They asked me to come back at 7:00pm, which I did, they then told me Dr. Pablo Garcia pulled 5 teeth - I was horried to find this out...why was I not called to ask if it is ok to pull 5 teeth and maybe tell me what kind of costs were involved. I will never return to Portage Park...Dr. Pablo Garcia had no right to make a decision to pull 5 teeth without calling me first, I have been going to Portage Park Animal Hospital for the past 12 years, I have never really been happy with them for now certainly will never go back more

Terrible experience. 5/5/2008

In December 2007, we took our cat to see Dr. Bornstein at Portage Park Animal Hospital. She had stopped eating, was dehydrated, and had lost a significant amount of weight. After a thorough examination including blood-work, he suggested that she had a liver-related illness. He couldn't accurately diagnose it without ultrasound and biopsy (for which he referred us to a different practice), at a cost of approximately $3000. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to spend that much money on our pet. Dr. Bornstein indicated that she would likely die, but offered no further guidance. We resolved to try to make our kitty as comfortable as she could be during her decline. She had stopped eating, so we syringe-fed her every few hours. She was dehydrated, so we asked to be shown how to give her fluids, and hydrated her regularly. After several weeks, she had perked up, gained some weight and seemed to be improving overall. \r \r By this time, we had become skeptical of the quality of c more

Clean and easy to get an appointment 4/16/2008

However I can't shake the feeling that their pricing has gone way up to pay for their new fancy facility. Some of the vets seem to like to suggest medication way too quickly and order tests to rule out things that are longshots in the first place. I will probably keep taking my dog here because they are so close and convenient for me but you have to advocate for what you feel is right for your pet. more

received a dead kitten back 1/15/2007

If you love your pet DO NOT TAKE your pet here. Healthy kitten taken here for shoots and to be spaded... a couple hours later received a call that she is dead. Yes dead, NO compassion at all. Wanted an explanation and finally was told.. oh weak heart, like it was nothing. This kitten lived in our house and played outside all day. The most active, hyper kitten we have ever seen. I was handed her in a box with the women saying"here's your kitty" We are taking her to have a necropsy (autopsy for cats) and the receptionist was crying with me and apologizing... no sympathy from the place that ended her life. Pros: good at putting healthy animals to rest Cons: everything from customer service, compassion, sympathy more

MONEY MONEY MONEY 1/13/2007

I have been bringing my pets to this vet my entire life. Through out the years I have gradually started to look for another vet. Walking into this place is worse then walking into a car dealership. I feel like all they want is your money. And they'll will do anything and be so shallow to tell you anything to get it. I am always pressured to do something more or buy something more every single time I walk through the door, even if there is nothing wrong with my animals. They don't care here. more

If you Love your Pet, You will take it to Potage Park Animal Hospital 8/27/2006

I have been going to Portage Park Animal Hospital for over 12 years and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else. My wonderful friend Tyler who passed away a few weeks ago went to Portage Park for 12 years and I feel he was wonderfully taken care of. Are they the least expensive vet in Chicago, no, but as mother always says "many times you get what you pay for" I really feel in this case it is very true and a good value for the great care you recieve. The vets, assistants, and techs you can tell just really love animals and they are organized and professional. I have lived in many areas of the City from Rogers Park to the Gold Coast to Old Edgebrook and It doesn't matter how far I have to travel to take by best friend there. I recently abopted a new friend (Siberian Husky in the picture to left) and I am very confident in the care and looking forward to taking him to Portage Park Animal Hospital. Pros: Take care of all pet needs, Great Staff, Very Organized Cons: Little pricey but still a great value! more

Quality Care But Overpriced 11/29/2005

Portage Park Animal Hospital is clean, nicely located and provides quality care. They take injured animals in without appointment, and their staff is courteous and friendly. The only real problem here is the cost; their pricing for a simple neuter surgery is nearly twice that which can be found in other animal hospitals of similar quality, and their emergency care is expensive enough to warrant a trek to an actual animal emergency vet, because the cost is the same and the emergency vet will take the animal in sooner. Good if you're in a bind but shop around for routine check-ups and basic surgeries. PROS: Good location, quality care CONS: Overpriced more

Great for your pets 9/2/2005

Someone told me about this caring vet years ago. They do so much for those beloved pets in your family. High quality, after hours emergency service, they take credit cards and are in a convenient location. They do surgery, vaccines, cleaning, x-rays and even counseling. They have been around for more than 25 years. Highly recommended by a lot of loyal customers and their furry friends. more
