In December 2007, we took our cat to see Dr. Bornstein at Portage Park Animal Hospital. She had stopped eating, was dehydrated, and had lost a significant amount of weight. After a thorough examination including blood-work, he suggested that she had a liver-related illness. He couldn't accurately diagnose it without ultrasound and biopsy (for which he referred us to a different practice), at a cost of approximately $3000. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to spend that much money on our pet. Dr. Bornstein indicated that she would likely die, but offered no further guidance. We resolved to try to make our kitty as comfortable as she could be during her decline. She had stopped eating, so we syringe-fed her every few hours. She was dehydrated, so we asked to be shown how to give her fluids, and hydrated her regularly. After several weeks, she had perked up, gained some weight and seemed to be improving overall. \r
