Want Compassionate, Caring Vets? Take your pet to Portage Park Animal Hospital! 8/25/2007

In June our beloved 11 year old lab mix, Reilly was diagnosed with Lymphoma. Dr Cynthia Olson, a vet at PPAH told us he had 2-4 weeks to live. Dr Olson seemed genuinely saddened by the news and would call us every 3-4 days to see how Reilly was feeling and to see if we had any questions. At the end, when we were going on vacation in Michigan w/ Reilly one last time, Dr Olson even offered to drive up and put him to sleep if his health started to deteriorate (it didn't). In the end, Reilly lost his battle w/ cancer (almost 4 weeks from the 1st diagnosis) and Dr. Olson and the staff were very supportive and caring in his final moments. They even sent sympathy cards later on and sent a beautiful paw print ornament for us to remember Reilly by. I would STRONGLY recommend Portage Park Animal Hospital (Dr Olson in particular) to any pet lover! more

Overcharging nightmare! 5/12/2007

This place is a joke. They really give it to you with medications and lab fees. I work in a hospital and they don't even charge as much as this place does. Never go there again. more

If you want your pet to be hurt take it to this animal hospital. 4/22/2007

I brought my 7.5 lb Pomeranian recently for the 3 yearly vaccinations. The vet acted suspiciously, I thought, motioning the assistant to the 3 needles on the table and her saying she might take my dog to another room because she might be hard to handle. A 7.5 lb, hard to handle? Soon I found out why. She jabbed the needles, which looked too big to me, and the dog yelped in pain. She also seemed to have a hard time plunging the syringe because she had to push it with her palm. Same with the 2nd syringe. If I thought that was bad enough I was not prepared for the 3rd one. When she jabbed the needle the dog jumped up yelping in pain and was scrambling to get away. Even after the needle was withdrawn the dog continued to cry, still in pain. I held her but she was still trying to get away. The vet took her from me and had to hold her tightly (the dog was still trying to get away). It took a while for her to calm down. And the vet acted like it was a big joke. July 7, 2006, I was given a bottle of prescription in which the dosage was two times more than what was in the chart. Instead of one half (1/2) tablet the bottle stated one tablet which was clearly an overdose which resulted in puddles all over the kitchen floor and the dog in distress. And their reaction was indifference and coldness. I will never, ever bring my dog to this animal hospital again. more

Portage Park Animal Hospital & Dental Clinic 3/3/2007

We have been extremely happy with Portage Park Animal Hospital. We transferred here from McKillip (another wonderful animal hospital) just over a year ago due to one aging, arthritic dog who had a hard time making it from the parking garage across the street to the vet's office and a new puppy that got so carsick we just couldn't put her in the car for the 30-45 minute drive to and from McKillip! There are several vets at Portage Park (we've seen them all!) and they all are excellent. The entire staff is friendly and caring, their equipment is state of the art, and the premises are very clean. Yes, their prices can be a bit higher than other animal hospitals (I do believe you get what you pay for!) but they do have a great puppy (and kitten) package .... 4 visits total (all shots, deworming, fecal exams, etc.) and a discount on spaying/neutering. A year ago this package was only $59 ... it may be a bit higher now. more

If you Love your Pet, You will take them to Portage Park Animal Hospital! 8/28/2006

I have been going to Portage Park Animal Hospital for over 12 years and I don't think I would ever go anywhere else. My wonderful friend Tyler who passed away a few weeks ago went to Portage Park for 12 years and I feel he was wonderfully taken care of. Are they the least expensive vet in Chicago, no, but as mother always says "many times you get what you pay for" I really feel in this case it is very true and a good value for the great care you recieve. The vets, assistants, and techs you can tell just really love animals and they are organized and professional. I have lived in many areas of the City from Rogers Park to the Gold Coast to Old Edgebrook and It doesn't matter how far I have to travel to take by best friend there. I recently abopted a new friend (Siberian Husky in the picture to left) and I am very confident in the care and looking forward to taking him to Portage Park Animal Hospital. more

Quality Care but Overpriced 12/31/2005

Portage Park Animal Hospital is clean, nicely located and provides quality care. They take injured animals in without appointment, and their staff is courteous and friendly. The only real problem here is the cost; their pricing for a simple neuter surgery is nearly twice that which can be found in other animal hospitals of similar quality, and their emergency care is expensive enough to warrant a trek to an actual animal emergency vet, because the cost is the same and the emergency vet will take the animal in sooner. Good if you're in a bind but shop around for routine check-ups and basic surgeries. more
