Long wait and arrogance 9/17/2009

Dr. Brad Phipps used to be my primary care for 4 years. I went to see him 2~3 times a year. The average waiting time was 1 hour or more. Last time, I waited for 60 minutes and complained with his nurse. I heard he asked his nurse: what is he fussing about? He then came in and finished with me in 5 minutes. I know I had to find another one. more

Evidently not very observant!! 4/27/2009

After 9 months of taking my son to see Dr.Mckeon I took him elsewhere because everytime we left i was irritated and he was screaming! When he saw his new doctor within 5mins he noticed a birth deffect on my son that should have been taken care of at birth! Now he has to go in for surgery at 11months old.I will never recommend Mckeon to ANYONE!! Pros: NONE! more

Staff that really cares 6/17/2008

I have been seen by Dr Joy Murphy for almost 7 years she has delivered my 2 children. the care she has given me and my children has been great. She never rushs us through the appointment. My daughter has liver diease and because of it we have to go to LFPC every monday to check her weight. When we walk in the doors the staff is always friendly. The office is busy but there busy because the doctors in this office are the best. I know that I can go to Dr Murphy with anything that has to with my health. I highly recommend Lawrence Family Practice. Pros: Pharmacy in the office more

7 visits and no help 7/26/2007

I would not recommend this clinic. I went there for a skin condition / allergy and I visited the doctor 7 times because i was so itchy, I couldn't sleep at night and my skin would welt from the scratching...nothing worked. I used to have to lather myself in lotion and anti-itch cream to even be able to sleep a couple hours. Everytime I visited, she dismissed me and told me to change my detergent (i did), my shampoo, lotions, etc...(I DID) and it was still unbarable, the sixth time she hinted at the fact that it all might be in my head. It's not in my head if everytime I scratch, even slightly, my skin welts. I wanted to go to an allergist and she said it wouldn't help, so on the 7th visit. I told her to give me some allergy medicine since I tried benadryl once and it seemed to help... anything becuause I changed my lifestyle and obviously nothing was working. So, she finally after the 7th visit prescribed an allergy medicine and it worked! it helped me tremendously and have been using it for the past year. It's horrible that I had to live with a condition for a year and a half before they could find out what was wrong with me and prescribe me the correct medicine. it also infuriates me that she would even go as far as to say it was all in my head. She also wasn't very attentive. Each time I went in she saw me for 5 minutes and said ""try this"", then left and that was it. Not recommended at all more

AWESOME! AWESOME! 7/9/2007

I am a NEW patient of Dr Vernon's! I was seeing her for my diabetes. The staff was friendly, funny, we made jokes, it was a very relaxing atmosphere. Dr. Vernon was AWESOME! I have never felt such confidence after a first visit EVER! She was more than amazing! She was thorough, she listened to me, and was so positive! This office and this doctor get an A+ from me! And please note, driving to Lawrence from KC will be well worth the gas for me! more

Dr. Vernon saved my life 5/14/2007

My experiences with the staff of Dr. Vernon's office have been a mixed bag. HOWEVER:\r - several years ago, Dr. Vernon noticed I was at risk for diabetes and offered me a test. Turns out I did have Type II diabetes and didn't realize it. She put me on her low carb diet. I lost 40 lbs and control my diabetes without insulin.\r - last year, Dr. Vernon refused to let me have a diabetes check-up unless I had a complete physical first. PITA, right? Well, the physical led her to recommend I see a specialist, and turns out I had endometrial cancer. It was caught early, I was treated, and now I am statistically close to 100% cancer free. I am SO GLAD that Dr. Vernon is my doctor! Pros: incredible doctor, fantastic for diabetes patients Cons: office staff is so-so; a mixed bag more

Dr. Murphy is a good doctor 3/29/2007

I have been a patient at LFP since 2001. Specifically, I have been seeing Dr. Murphy regularly for the past year and off and on in the years prior to that. She has an excellent bedside manner and is always willing to answer any questions that I have. I have never waited more than 24 hours to see her and the last time I was in, she was more than happy to answer my questions about a problem not related to why I was there. The facility does have an automated telephone answering system that requests you press a number to get to the proper receptionist for the doctor you are calling for. It is by no means confusing. As soon as you do so, you get a real person to schedule your appointment with. I have seen multiple doctors at this facility, including Dr. Carla Phipps and Dr. McKeon and have been nothing but satisfied. I drive 20 miles because they provide a great service. The staff is also great about putting me through to a nurse if I have a question about a recent visit or medication. I have recommended, and continue to recommend, the doctors at this practice. \r Pros: The facility could use a little updating with furniture, paint, etc. Cons: Occassionally, the wait once in the exam room is a little long. But it hasn't been worth finding another doctor in the 6 years I've been a patient. more

Always the BEST 3/27/2007

I have been a patient of Dr. Steven Thomsen since he came to Lawrence fresh out of med school. I have never received anything but optimal treatment at the different LFPC office sites and from the new and/or on-going staff. I have been treated by different physicians when mine wasn't on duty and have always been very pleased.\r \r ROCK ON LFPC................. more

Dr. Mary Vernon 1/18/2007

My daughter-in-law made an appt with Dr Vernon because she is pregnant. It took over a month to get in to see her, then they canceled the appt. at the last min. and rescheduled it a couple of days later. By this time, she was over 3 months pregnant. The nurse took her bloodppressure and told her it was high. When Dr Vernon came in she did a hasty pelvic exam, told her to schedule her own sonogram but wait a couple of weeks because her office was very busy, went out and never came back. She said nothing about her high bloodpressure, gave her no perscriptions for pre-natal vitamins , did not even listen to the babies heart beat. My daughter-in-law had a list of questions to ask her so of course she did not even get a chance to ask them. The receptionist came in and finished up the appt. They were very uncaring and most certainly unprofessional. My daughter-in-law was so upset she went home crying and totally upset. Her friend went to Dr. Vernon a few days later and was treated in the very same manner. They both immediately made appts with Lawrence OGBYN and have been treated with respect and a very caring attidtude and they are quite willing to work with them and answer any questions they have. My daughter-in-law had an appt yesterday with her new Dr and they were going over her chart and the tests they had taken at Dr. Vernons office and it came to the Dr's attention thay my daughter-in-law had a kidney infection and Dr Vernon did not even call her and tell her that she had an infection and needed medication so she has been living with a kidney infection for well over 6 weeks now. My daughter-in-law won't go back there again and I certainly would not either. If this Dr. wants to work with the elderly and their diets I hope she has a better bed side manner with them. I would not recommend her to anyone. Cons: Unprofessional, uncaring, inefficient, incompetent more

Good Grief 1/17/2007

Rude, insensitive, disorganized. If you have a medical concern, go somewhere else. The fact is they are too busy with botox and atkins diet here. Office is dreary and impersonal, nurses are rushed and rude, and the last time, and I do mean it will be the last time, I was there the receptionist finished the visit, great. No thanks! more

Rushed and cursory care, rude staff, impersonal. Feels like a train depot. 1/5/2007

This practice is like a train station - busy and impersonal and the staff is short and preemptively rude. (This always makes me wonder if the staff is treated well.) A phone call leads one through a complex maze of recordings. Dr. Murphy is short and clearly does not want to spend a moment more than she deems absolutely necessary, to give information or answer questions. My impression is that this group is in it to pack in as much money as quickly as possible, and they do not want to spend the time to give thorough and sensitive care. I think they are distracted by their golden goose - their cosmetic laser surgery practice. How could a medical group give adequate attention to a family practice, obstetrics, AND a cosmetic practice?\r \r They cannot wait to get through your appointment and out the door. I went with an obscure condition and the doctor could not remember the name of it, but she didn't take the time to look it up for me. I do my own research, could not find it, and after visiting her I STILL don't know what I have. \r \r I left them for more thoughtful, sensitive care. I would not recommend them or go back. My first critera in finding a new doctor was that it was easy to get a human on the phone. \r \r Rude staff, impersonal care, rushed appointments, and an office where you are made to feel like just a number. Pros: Parking is fine. Cons: Phone call leads to a maze of recordings. Staff is short, rude. Doctor rushes through - gives the briefest of care. more

Best doctor I have had! 9/16/2006

I started seeing Carla about 9 years ago. She has delivered both of my children and I cannot imagine going to another doctor. She always takes time with me and my kids and my kids are VERY comfortable with her. She always has time to chit chat with me about anything when I come in. I have seen Carla out running errands and she takes the time to stop and talk to me and my kids. She knows us by name and so does her great staff. Bottom line... EVERYONE has their own opinions about EVERYTHING. What is good for one person may not be good for another. Pros: Great doctors, great nurses and great staff Cons: Ususally running behind more

Lost bedside manner LONG ago! 8/10/2006

I had Carla as my doc for my first and second child. This was back in 1991! Somewhere about this time she got so busy she apparently forgot how to give good care. When I had a procedure after an abnormal pap smear, she had her hand on the door before I even sat up! This is entirely true: I had to tell her to wait a minute, I had questions. I never went back and I tell any pregnant woman NOT to see her. She is way too busy with facial lasering now, anyway. I heard she got a 1 million dollar signing bonus when Columbia came to town and the original practice split. She is not worth a penny of that amount! Pros: Her husband is a great doctor Cons: She takes no time and is insensetive. more

very poor service 7/20/2006

Go here only if you enjoy being treated like a heard of cattle. The quality of service is unbeleivably substandard by any comparison. The employees are rude, and totally uncaring in regards to customer service. This is not a business I would recommend. more

User review by haleybug 4/30/2006

I've been with Carla since High School. My first meeting with her she told me that I was fat and that I need to exercise. Okay, I played sports and I was 135 pounds. I wasn't overweight at all. So I went to Susan Siesmen instead of Carla. She was the best. When I found out that I was pregrent, Susan was there for me. I was 21, but I wasn't ready for a baby yet. So I had to go to Carla for my appointments to see if my baby was fine. She would ride for not gaining any weight, even though I was eating all the time and if I gain weight she would tell I was gaining to much. When I was in labor that was the first time she was nice to me. Then last year she fired Susan for no reason. Pros: nice staff, good parking Cons: expensive, double bills , never get an appt. more

I go in to see her once a month 4/14/2006

I go in to see her once a month for an exam but she never has any time for me, she is always rushed and distracted, I am currently looking for a new doctor who will treat me as a person and not just a dollar sign. Cons: insensitive, iresponsible more

no sensitivity 2/6/2006

Dr. phipps was called in when I was ready to push and looked at the nurses and said ""she's still got a long ways to go"" acted put off that she was called in. Not what you want to hear after being in labor 19 hours.son born an hour later. Son was sick with temp of 104 called dr phipps she said ""a childs brain wont fry until around 107"" not kidding. shes also always double booked. very rushed. Expecting number 2... have new doctor! more

Long time patient 12/7/2005

The PA's are the BEST - Heather rocks! Some of the nurses are short and rude with patients (probably very busy). We always receive fast communications (especially children's issues) sometimes I feel like we were being compared to all patients seen and not treated as individuals. I don't think this is uncommom here. Years ago, my son died of SIDS, I called (EMT's were present) Mary was put RIGHT on the phone, met me at the ER immediately and spent alot of time trying lots of options, and later myself counseling, etc. She has always handled me with compassion in complex situations. A long standing relationship with anyone is complicated, physicians not withstanding. Sometimes I feel like I am ""bothering"" the staff, but probably my own personal issue. Overall, I would not change DRs, my kids are very comfortable, as teenagers they are handled with respect, privacy and dignity. Pros: Great PA's, Good response to emer, Waiting room time ok Cons: exam room wait long, some nurses rude, Weird Office Setup more

I used to use them as my Primary Dr. 11/7/2005

I loved the staff and they availablity to get in pretty much whenever. However I didn't agree with the way the doctor was treating my stepfather. He would give him one perscription and then when my steofather would go back in he would give him a new med. that didn't mix well with the first med. He didn't take the time to look at his chart and see this..until it was too late and the mix up had made my stepfather even sicker. more
