Best

Nice cozy place. I go there almost everyday for drinking purposes.

Worst

Our first visit was with another local Heights couple on a beautiful Friday evening. Onion Creek was obviously a popular spot. The parking lot was full as were most of the tables....

Quaint Nice Atmospher 5/9/2012

Breakfast was delish! Atmosphere very nice, wish I lived closer this would be a regular breakfast spot for me. more

Best patio in town. Great craft beer 5/4/2012

Best patio in town. Great craft beer selection and frozen mimosas to boot. Food is hit or miss, but decent. Go for the atmosphere. more

my favorite patio 3/11/2012

The OC has a great, shaded patio. It's the perfect place to get together with a big group on a Sunday afternoon (especially during crawfish season). Inside it's cozy, and I often meet my lady friends here to catch up during the week. Coffee is great! more

Onion Creek Coffee House 1/16/2012

This is one of my favorite places to eat in the Heights... and even more so lately, with it not being 1000 degrees outside so you can sit on the patio. My favorite things to get are the turkey and chicken salad sandwiches and the side salad with creamy cilantro dressing. My friend and I went for lunch the other day and he ordered the Mediterranean appetizer with artichoke hummus, which was amazing. One thing I don't like, though, is the potato salad. Wayyy too much mayo and way too little potato. There is a good selection of beers on tap and good drink specials as well... and the bartenders are friendly and helpful. Parking can be tough at times, but worst case you park down the street and enjoy a stroll along White Oak.\r \r more

Great Coffee 11/22/2011

I like the ambiance and the affordable prices. What I like the most about Onion Creek Coffee is its amazing drinks. Great place to unwind. more

great location but bad service 7/18/2011

It's a good place to hang out with friends but the service there is just blah. Walking up to the bar was just as fast to get our drinks.b more

Great place to hang!!!! 8/16/2010

Love their sandwiches and coffee. Fun wine list too. more

Refuge for Area Austinites and Eclectic Houstonians alike 3/31/2010

Onion Creek lives up to its reputation for being a slice of Austin in the heart of Houston from the racks of expensive bicycles piled out back to the small Saturday morning farmer’s market that takes over the parking lot. One of the few places you will find people actually walking to from their homes in Houston, this is a true neighborhood gem. Folks tend to gather in groups and mingle on into the night so finding a table later in the evening can be a challenge, particularly when the weather is nice and the patio is booming. Waiting 45 minutes for your burger is commonplace but everyone is having such a great time that no one minds. Orders are placed up at the bar but servers bring food to your table based on the number placard system that has become the pub-grub staple. Even in the most immense of hungry crowds, staff remains friendly and tries to be as attentive as possible. It is truly admirable. On various visits to Onion Creek that usually involve ordering a properly made black and tan, I have fallen back on the OC Burger. Layered with chipotle mayo and avocado, it is sure to bring joy to any mouth and has not failed me yet. I’ve also tasted friends’ bacon and bleu burger, a few nibbles of pizza and even sampled the ever-popular Sunday steak night without hint of disappointment. Even if you have never been to Austin and haven’t ridden a bicycle in decades, do not fret. Onion Creek is friendly in every facet of its experience. more

crap service 1/28/2010

Food order was an hour late, to which the counter guy replied: 'sorry, here's your money"" Pros: atmosphere Cons: indifferent staff more

Cafe with an Austin feel 12/27/2009

Low-key Sunday afternoon. The service was very good, food served promptly. There is nothing imaginative or exciting on the menu, just burgers and smallish salads. It's just a place to hang out, have a bit to eat, pretend you're in a beautiful city where people really love to dine outdoors, instead of in a former gas station at a corner intersection. Pros: Low key, good service Cons: Parking, no plants/greenery more

Local and Good!! 2/23/2009

Lots of beer, wine and good folks.\r Food is excellent, FOR BAR FOOD.\r Don't expect too much or you might be disappointed!!!\r Coffee is OK..........I'm not a fan of Katz's Coffee(espresso)........\r Ambiance is definitely cozy but usually a little crowded in the evenings.\r Try Cedar Creek and Dry Creek, if you want good food.\r OC is better for the light drinking evening crowd.........and a good lunch.\r Theres better coffee just around the corner @ Antidote.\r \r The staff is great.........ALL OF YOU ROCK!!!!\r \r Pros: Just about everything!!!!!! Cons: Noone notices the BIG parking lot on the OTHER SIDE of the liquor store!! more

Hamburgers Their Way 1/13/2009

My boyfriend ordered a burger and requested it be cooked medium, you know, with a little pink inside for color and juicy-ness. Our order taker stated that all burgers are cooked well done. Period. End of story. So my boyfriend ordered it their way and just as I had anticipated, the burger wasn't all that satisfying. He left much of it on his plate. I ordered the mixed green salad with goat cheese and strawberry viniagrette, which was just fine but I wouldn't come here again JUST for salad. Unless you like your hamburgers well done, this isn't the place to order one. I doubt we'll come back to this spot for lunch but maybe we'll give breakfast a try. Pros: open patio, Internet service, casual atmosphere Cons: average food, no real parking lot more

Probably the best coffeehouse and pub combo in Houston, the burger has avocado, and their rich and creamy potato salad is like no other! 6/10/2008

I know the Houston Press gave them best coffee shop in Houston in a previous year, and there's a reason for that. Not only do they take their drinks seriously, but when the daylight in streaming in through the big windows, you feel like you've found a happy place! Their iced toddy brew is on the level of the iced coffee at Taft St, and that's saying a lot. I don't think you've ever had potato salad like theirs before--the potatoes are sliced super thin and it may just be too rich and creamy for you, but that's why I like it! Avocado on the burger: check. And inside or out, it's a great place to have a Guinness or Winter Stout or Shiner with friends. Pros: superb coffee, loads of beer options, unique potato salad Cons: sometimes slow when it gets packed more

Great Atmosphere Terrible Service 4/8/2008

Our first visit was with another local Heights couple on a beautiful Friday evening. Onion Creek was obviously a popular spot. The parking lot was full as were most of the tables.. The bar area inside had three lines of ten or so people each waiting to place orders. The atmosphere was chaotic but with a certain casual ambiance that was appealing. The couch are inside was deserted in favor of the much more popular outdoor deck.\r After placing our orders for sandwiches and burgers we sat outside at one of the few free tables left. We waited. After half an hour the other couple's sandwiches arrived. We waited some more. Eventually we checked with the bartenders who also take the food orders inside (there is no waitstaff). We were reassured our burgers would be out in about ten more minutes (We could hear screaming in the kitchen where a fight had broken out between two employees and the manager had to leave to break it up). After another twnety minutes I appraoched the bartenders again with my receipt in hand. I was told they had no record of ever having placed the order. The other couple with us who suggested the establishment were very embarressed in spite of the situation not being their fault. The bartender became rude and began pointing to the front of a menu on which was written a disclaimer regarding service/orders. After an hour's wait and no acceptance or responsibility for the lost order or offer of an apology from the manager (returned from breaking up the kitchen fight) we (thanks to the receipt!) got our money back in cash (minus the 20% tip I had paid by credit card when initially paying). I didn't care at that point. We were just happy to leave and get dinner somewhere else. I wouild recommend this place as a terrific venue for drinks and casual evenings outside on the deck when the weather's good. The food our friends received looked good as were the drinks but the service appears very poor at the present time. I hope that the service improves. Pros: Outdoor Deck, Beer Selection, Casusl Ambiance. Cons: No Service, Terrible Attitude of Staff, Lost Food Order. more

Nice place for a drink, the staff are okay 11/16/2007

Its a good place to sit and have a drink with a friend. They have an outside patio where you can enjoy the weather. The staff there are not so nice but they do their jobs. I didnt go looking for someone to make me feel good so it didnt matter. The music was kind of loud inside but it was alright for me. Pros: Great outdoor deck during good weather Cons: Parking and Staff more

Arguably the worst staff of all time... 11/3/2007

I totally agree that this probably was, at one time, a great little place. Great atmosphere, great beer selection. The staff is absolutely aweful. The short short blonde with the pony tail is the worst. She seems to hate people in general. The guys seemed to be the best, but certainly not overly friendly or fast for that matter. I believe every one and every thing deserves a chance--this places loses. I saw previous posts about the rude staff and that the food was pretty good. I totally disagree. Working in the business, I still gave them 25% tip but it was the one time it truly pained me. They even told me that they cook the burgers down the street somewhere (well done no less) and were brought over in batches (so much for fresh ehh?) Go to tailgate if you want a great burger. Actually go anywhere, don't reward these people or that behavior. Hopefully management will recognize (and care) and try to remedy the situation. It really really does have a great atmosphere--again I just hate to reward these people (or their management) for allowing that mess. FYI-Bartending is a SERVICE BUSINESS! Pros: Atmosphere; location Cons: the staff; the people who work there; the management; the staff; the staff and the staff more

One Word - Yum! 8/28/2007

The tuna salad is a must try! I crave this place! It has a nice patio and is great to sit out on a beautiful day and have a great lunch or early dinner! Pros: Good food, fun waiters Cons: Small location, get there early or don't go at rush hour. more

I would have given more stars if their staff was nicer 7/10/2007

Again, it's always the staff. Fun place. But I think the disinterest trickles down from the top. There is no waitstaff, just bartenders. They have no table service, so how much incentive is there to make the clients happy? If they just paid for a few friendly people (where did April go? She was a wonderful steak girl!) to service the tables instead of standing behind the bar, while you wait/stand/jockey for position with others 5 bodies deep to get a drink, they'd sell a heck of a lot more beer. Waiting for the food is a female dog and yes, they don't always get the order right. The bartenders (the ones that have been there the longest) are the rudest. I don't think I've ever seen them smile. They act like they hate working there. I think they shouldn't. Pros: easy place to find friends. Cons: staff doesn't smile, parking stinks and it takes a long time to get self served. more
